A couple of weeks ago someone (sorry, don't remember who) mentioned the DVD "Tim's Vermeer". I ordered a copy and watched it Friday. It is the story of a Texan, inspired by the book "Vermeer's Camera", tries to recreate the methods that made Vermeer's paintings so different, lifelike, and detailed for the time. Convinced that Vermeer used optical technology of the day, he works out just how it was done. He chose the painting "The Music Lesson" for the test to see if the techniques would let anyone to paint like Vermeer.
Sounds kind of dry, perhaps. Actually, it is a fascinating documentary. Tim learns to grind lenses needed for the devices, create oil paints, use lighting, prepare canvas, and many other matters using only materials and techniques available to Vermeer. They show the people Tim meets with to discuss the effort including, to my surprise, Martin Mull. It's a combination of detective work, innovation, and discovery. In the end, Tim is able, with months of work, to recreate "The Music Lesson" as the finale of several years of effort. (It helps that Tim is a self-made millionaire and inventor.)
The production is top-notch, produced by Penn and Teller. There is also some humor such as when Tim, who plays guitar, picks up the viola da gamba and plays the opening notes of 'Smoke on the Water'. Even though I'm only marginally able to understand the technology involved I found the process to be riveting. And the actual painting process was fascinating and revealing. The attention to detail, more than most viewers even see in the painting, was eye opening.
I really gained a greater appreciation of art and artistic technique. This is a Blu-Ray with DVD version and worth every penny.

I think it would have been better if we had just built more F-22's instead. Much more capable airplane and hasn't really had many issues from what I know. Also I believe the F-22 costs less per plane then the F-35, correct me if I'm wrong.

Someone said yesterday (outside the HQ) that Trump was aiming for 40% support for his policy, counting on the die hard support of his die hard supporters to push him over to wins.
I wasn't 100% sold on the idea, but it seemed somewhat reasonable.
Is the left doing the same thing, though? Are they really just appealing to their hard core base and making no effort to reach out? How the Women's March has been embraced as a full on left wing thing seems to indicate yes, although it started with something of a surface of "all women oppose Trump" message (which is bologna, of course).

Heck, I use the YouVersion App. You can get reading plans on there, and it will send you updates and reminders. You can do a "year plan" where you read a little every day, and if you do the "chronological" plan it tries to make it so that the events are chronological order (not 100% possible, but it reads more like a story than not in that way).

.When Mexico's Military crosses the border that is an Act of War and Trump will not let that go like obama and Bush did.
There was an article in the Sherman TX newspaper the other day about how the wall will destroy the towns of El Paso and Juarez because everyone there freely crosses the border without any issues now. They got a case of the vapors that people will actually have to go through border crossing stations when the wall is built and that will destroy the economy of both towns and Juarez will become more of a hell hole than it already is.

It's never too late to read and study it.
Heck, I use the YouVersion App. You can get reading plans on there, and it will send you updates and reminders. You can do a "year plan" where you read a little every day, and if you do the "chronological" plan it tries to make it so that the events are chronological order (not 100% possible, but it reads more like a story than not in that way).

Anyway, I am trying to organize auditions at the church for a Lenten Drama about Judas and Peter-and was asking is there were any regular meetings there so i could work around them. I thought she said. "We have a plumbers group." I said, "A plumber's group?" What is that-a support group for plumbers or AA for plumbers? She said "No; A plumbers SCHOOL." I'm in the same situation. There have been a lot of good suggestions on the threads lately. They all have their strong points. I'm finding "The New Oxford Annotated Bible" and "Moody Bible Commentary" to be helpful. I expect to pick up others over time. Of course, I can only know more than I do now. I love the F-22 but it does not excel as an attack or strike aircraft. It requires an entire redesign to make it carrier capable, whereas the F-35 is VSTOL, benefiting the Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force when a full service airfield is not available.
They are completely different aircraft with separate missions. Even though you can strap some JDAM's or other ordnance in the F-22, it is not an effective close air support platform, the F-35 is not an air superiority fighter, it is a close air support aircraft that can conduct rudimentary air-to-air combat if required. But they are both necessary to replace the 40 and 50 year old airframes of the AV-8B Harriers, F-15's, F-16's and the F/A-18 Hornets.

I'm not saying it is the best 'every type of aircraft'. It is indisputably the best FIGHTER ever designed.
We still need CAS (A-10's are perfect, don't change them), carrier aircraft, etc, as you say.
Actually, I think the number of airframes operated by the US Military in the 80's was probably about right. F-16 for a fighter, F-15 for a multirole platform, F-14/18 for carriers, and some nasty mothers like the A-10 for CAS/Tactical stuff.
The IDEA of the F-35 doesn't bother me. Its execution has been, less than ideal.

I've lived in Metro Detroit for most of my life, and worked downtown for six years. I'm one of those people who go through red lights after midnight if I feel threatened.
Here's the thing: Detroit has gone feral. It went feral after the riots in the 60's.
The media loves to talk up the city, but it's all complete and utter propaganda. When people from out of town talk about buying houses for $100, I laugh at them. They're wasting their money. If the house was $1 they're be wasting that dollar.
There are only a few groups that live in the city:
1. black criminals and welfare baby mommas
2. elderly blacks and whites that are too poor to leave
3. whites who MUST live in city because of a job/ DUI
BTW... I was careful when I worked downtown and nothing happened to me. Don't want to work down there ever again.

This is why our founders required Senators to be appointed by the governor of the state they represent. They could be recalled by the legislature. They were beholden to a state's legislature, not working on their next election and catering to big donors.
Then the progressives convinced a large percentage of Americans that Senators being appointed was "undemocratic"(we aren't a democracy, but by then the progressive infiltration of the American mind was well under way). So the 17th amendment was ratified by 36 state legislatures after popular votes in those states, etc.
And now we have the same issue in the senate that we have in the House, only on a more serious and larger scale because only two senators represent entire states. And spend the vast amount of their time catering to donors, and worrying about getting reelected for term after so they can enrich themselves.

I'm reading a biography of James Buchanan and this gets brought up a fair bit.
The politics of Pennsylvania changed rather radically while Buchanan was senator, and he had the choice of following instructions from the suddenly antagonistic state legislature or resigning. He was a spineless man, so he talked big against things he didn't like but voted the way the legislature wanted.

I just found out that a Republican friend of mine who works for the Pistons had to go through mandatory NBA "diversity training."
It was horrific. From what he told me, I probably would have gotten a "migraine" and left due to my "health".
Gist: You're white and had advantages? You should feel bad about yourself. Really, really bad. And you were required to share your feelings about your guilt with the group.
BTW, my friend didn't feel guilty. He's marked for the FEMA camps.
What did they accomplish?
They p*ssed off the white people who were supposed to feel bad about themselves.
Then made the blacks who did not have the same advantages feel bad about themselves, and dislike the white employees who did things like "have their parents help them with their homework as a child."
Basically, this actually made the working environment much worse, and created issues between individuals and departments that were never there before.
But it made the NBA happy.

Mattis is a war-fighter and if the Air Force provides solid justification for additional F-22's, they will get them. Russia and China are the only nations that hold a viable challenge to air superiority and if the current fleet of F-22's cannot do that, I won't be surprised to see the shortfall get addressed.

Not that is matters for McCain as he's not up in 6 years and supposedly his "people" are saying its his last term.
The big problem why McCain can't get knocked off is conservatives simply don't give his primary challengers any money, but McCain walks in with like a $20 million war chest every time.

Agree. It destroyed the design of the American government which was done with historical review and experience. The founders knew the House, with representatives directly elected by the people in small, close districts, often just neighborhoods at the time of farming communities, would be prone to mob rule and pressure over events and would vote emotionally and with thought of being reelected for those who were politically ambitious.
Senators were to be more removed from that pressure by having an entire state to represent, with it's various farms, towns, cities, ports, borders, etc. and were to be deliberative and a "cooling off' place for hysterical legislation passed by the House. They could only be removed or appointed by a state governor, who also represented an entire state.
with Senators being elected, now they only represent whatever district in their state funds their campaigns and brings them lobbying dollars.
Hence why you have situations such as Michigan where we have a Rep. gov. Republican legislature, and two worthless Democrat Senators. A Republican candidate for the Senate cannot get enough funding to actually run a campaign to over come the Democrat machine.

You know what gets politicians re-elected? It isn't their positions. It is constituent service. If you get stuff done for constituents you will get re-elected. That is the big reason why incumbency is so powerful. it isn't just money. It is that you can do stuff for people that a non-incumbent can't. Like getting somebody's mother's Medicare bill straightened out. You do that, they don't care about how you voted on this or that committee vote.
Really.
Graham is from roughly the same area as Strom Thrumond, and he was elected to the seat that Thurmond held. He inherited a lot of Thurmond's staff. And Strom was the longest serving Senator, ever, because he excelled at constituent service.
Graham's staff continues in that tradition. And he will continue to get re-elected until he stops.

I lived in Rome for a little more than a year, and my first exposure to real protests was there.
I didn't use much public transportation because I was poor, so I walked everywhere. When I couldn't get through a Piazza to get to work because hundreds of dumb college students waving Soviet flags were blocking everything due to the idea floating at the time that college students should pay SOMETHING for their education, I lost all sympathy.
If I were a voting Italian, I would have determined to never support them ever.
I think that experience is analogous to low information voters in America who don't really know what's going on, but who DO have the power to vote.

Uber messes that up...taxi operators aren't willing to bribe city government officials for their seals if they don't have to.
Plus there's that whole thing about Uber demonstrating that free markets and competition actually works to bring low prices and stellar service to consumers.

Plus, when lots of people become independent contractors and start cutting a quarterly check to the IRS and state gov't instead of just automatically getting it taken out of your paycheck, you start to get conservative real quick. It's MUCH different psychologically.
I'm not one to usually engage in politics with strangers, but for whatever reason like every driver for uber I've had has been REALLY conservative.
