Wednesday Night ONT - On The Fly Edition
So, normally I set aside time Wednesday afternoon to write the ONT, but today is especially busy. I have no idea how much I'll be able to put together. Will the ONT be short? Long? Messy? I don't know. It all depends on how much I can squeeze in around the edges today. Let's start with beer pinup art:
That's the label from a bottle of Double D double IPA from the Dominion Brewing Company. It's part of an entire line of beers, all branded with pinup artwork. I love looking at all of them, that kind of Americana appeals to me. The beer itself is pretty good, if you like IPAs. As beer goes, it's rocket fuel, 9% ABV. I started drinking it last year with the thought “Hey, I can get a buzz from just a couple of beers, which means I'll drink less!”. This was true. It's also true that I put on about 10 pounds because each bottle packs in about 300 calories, more than twice what you get from a typical American lager and three times what you find in a light beer. Approach with caution.
Road Trip!
Is there anything more quintessentially American than the road trip? I don't think so. From the “mother road” to the popularity of RVs, part of being a free American is the ability to pack up and head out to see the country. New self driving cars may soon spell an end to this cherished tradition. I'm of two minds about self driving cars. As someone who regularly drives across country with my family, I can see the attraction. Have you ever driven across Illinois south of Chicago? Ugh. It's where God put the nothing when he made the world. Being able to sit back and let the car do all of the work during boring cross country drive is quite beguiling. On the other hand, I don't think that concerns about network security are crazy at all. This past year have shown us that hacking is an omnipresent threat to our computerized world. There is no such thing as an unhackable system. Imagine the carnage is someone managed to gain access to the command and control system of an automated highway network and simply ordered all cars to accelerate? The death toll would make 9/11 look like a school picnic.
Republican or Democrat? (Republican) Coke or Pepsi? (Coke) TP roll over or under? (Who cares?) While these are the correct answers to some of the most pressing issues of our times, here on the HQ, the eternal debate rages: Longbow or Crossbow? Well, don't look now, but it looks like crossbows might be making a move:

Like many of you, I have a child who will be college age in a few years. The problem is, where can we send him that he's not going to be indoctrinated with all of the leftist garbage so prevalent these days? Hillsdale? That would be an excellent choice, but are there any others? I don't think I want to send him to my alma mater, a school that recently won a national debate contest with racist blatherings. (I get that this is an accepted form of “debate” these days. That fact underscores my point rather than refuting it) How about sending him to Guatemala? Daniel Hannon writes about a hidden oasis of free market education lurking in Central America. Francisco Marroquin University has a 45 year tradition of educating its students in the principles of Austrian economics. It's a serious concern for parents these days, at least for conservative parents. How can it not be in a world where a Maryland school is employee FIRED for correcting student's spelling. Smh. Dogs

I did, several years ago, but of all the stuff I've written here, I really messed that one up (of all subjects!). I wasn't wrong, but I got greedy and tried to solve the coming social security shortfall at the same time. It got confused.

Since most of us seem to be middle-aged-ish, realize that either the tests are getting easier, or the prep is getting ridiculously good. If you got a decent score back in the 80s or early 90s, you'd probably get a great one today.
Wikipedia lists the percent of perfect (36) ACT scores among all test-takers over the past several years:
1997: 0.0077%
2006: 0.0179%
2014: 0.0762%
So unless you think we suddenly have ten times as many geniuses in less than a generation, then the test is ten times easier to ace.
(We don't have 10x fewer dummies taking the test; twice as many people took it in 2014 as in 1997, and our population certainly isn't 20x bigger.)

I have read samples of the Verbal Analogy problems and they're dumbed down. Also, the Verbal portion started including free response/essay questions that are susceptive to fluffing up.
Anecdotally, I also recall that when I was at Maryland in the early 2000s the average SAT scoress were not much lower than Harvard's were 15 years earlier. Maryland's a very good state school, but it didn't that much better that fast.

Tomorrow is the welcome concert at the Lincoln Memorial. Pre-show at 1, concert at 3, and fireworks at 6.
Friday is the inauguration at noon and parade at 2ish on Pennsylvania Avenue.
We need to get a lot of people come for the inauguration and dwarf the numbers for Saturday's pissy pants parade.

It's a good vacation city for kids. Lots of fun things at the Inner Harbor, boat rides, baseball --- and good art museums that don't overwhelm you.
We used to stay in a specific room at the (now gone) Holiday Inn where we could actually see the O's do batting practice. (That was before the parking area was filled in and other buildings were shoved in there.)

Dominion used to be local. Loved going to their brewpub.
They did good, and Coastal Brewing Company (aka Anheuser Busch) bought them, and now beer called "Dominion" is made in Delaware.
But I do like the artwork. Morning Glory Espresso Stout is tasty and the label lady is bunkworthy.

I've been up in row 58 or so and there are no rails, the steps are steep, and when you're climbing up or down carrying beer and a hot dog, you have to be careful. I think I am getting old and can't drink coffee and tea like I used to. I started drinking barley tea (boricha if you prefer the Korean) with lemon juice and ginger.

Seems like every decade for the past 80 years or so, some genius has a bee in his bonnet to build a flying car. Prototypes get built. Rarely, one or two get sold. And then the hype wears off. Because the design compromises inherent in the concept mean that a flying car (or roadable airplane) is neither a very good car, nor a very good airplane, and usually costs more than a good airplane and two cars, which fact tends to negate and special utility the combo unit might have.
And that's completely ignoring the huge regulatory burden on anything that flies.

Actually it was the Greeks that invented it, it was invented at Rhodes and was called the Polybolos - the "many shooter". Supposedly by one Dyonisius of Alexandria.
It used a rotating drum like a rolling pin with a slot on it to feed arrows from the hopper above into the channel below where it would be shot out by the bow-string that was pulled back by the chain-drive operated by a capstan of sorts. Well, the automatic crossbow in the video seems to be an automatic weapon. Now I understand that Gatling guns are not considered machine guns because they are hand-cranked. If you motorized a Gatling gun, would it become a machine gun?
Of course, firearms are a special case of projectile weapons in that the ammunition provides the energy for the reloading operation, at least in those guns that take advantage of that fact.

Long distance riding is taxing (hence the "Iron Butt" rally), but bugs are not a part of that. Modern windshields and helmets pretty much take that out of the equation. Cold, rain, wind, other drivers, hinky traction, these are the hardships.
And yes, Boston drivers are probably the worst, but there is a certain rhythm that makes it all work.

I only heard a few brief clips from that Frontline atrocity today on the radio.
It is the idiot marinade, the comprehensive distortion, the false framework, in which so many people (and almost all of "mainstream" "elite" cohorts) exist, and which they inflict on the society, that leaves me still guardedly pessimistic we'll ever see anything more than some speed bumps on our long glide to the bottom. That program is a perfect example.

Clownifornia drivers are pretty uniformly clueless, not to mention the Illegal Alien Drunk Driving Demolition Derby thing. But I'm not crazy about the West Texas thing of parking yourself in someone else's blind spot even though there's no other cars within 5 miles.
Last trip thru WTX this summer, had some wench floor it in her Saturn from about 3 miles back on I10 SE of El Paso (I was tooling along on cruise control at 90mph). She hauled ass to close with me, and then parked her shitcar right in my blind spot for 20 miles. When I slowed down to 70.....she kept pace in the blind spot. Sped back up to 90.....you guessed it. Finally had to punch it over 110 and dust her ass.
Not the first or the last time that's happened.

I have never seen the cutting off\ backing up on off ramps here, have seen it numerous times on and near the beltway. Everytime I was there, I would have at least one of those "Holy Shit!" moments when you get the adrenaline shakes from just seeing a near miss huge accident.

If you use the old main roads, and take bypasses except for towns you mean to explore, you don't lose that much time. You see a lot more of the bars, motels, family businesses, old churches, too. Plus, historical markers.
Years ago, I found an old desert racer who was also a lens-grinder, and he made me up a set of prescription RAF-style (Climax!) goggles. That changed motorcycling for me.
If you can get down in Illinois as far as Bloomington or Decatur, it's not so oppressive. South of that, you're in the South. Coal mines, rolling hills, Spoon River country.

Isn't that illegal in Texas? My friend's brother is in the marines and he was out in California. We took a vacation to Vegas and he drove there. My friend and him drove his car back from there to Ohio. They got pulled over late at night on the interstate in Texas because they were in the left lane on the empty road. Only supposed to be used for passing.

Have one close to me in Long Beach. It joins PCH with Lakewood Boulevard.
Been on it recently; the city of LB has done a lot to try and make the thing foolproof, including blocked-off turn lanes and an "outer circle" that lets you avoid the whole thing.

The thing with unrestricted Autobahns is to keep your eyes a quarter-mile ahead of you. There's no time for texting, no time for changing your nav route. You've got to have your eyes out of the cockpit 90% of the time.
Because you're zipping down the left lane at 250kph (hey, M5 Euro Delivery's a blast) and somewhere up there what seems like a long way up a truck (limited to 90kph) pulls out to pass some Escort diesel towing a travel trailer, and you might THINK it's a long way up but you're gonna put a lot of heat into your brakes getting slowed down. Then he moves back over and you're WOT back to 250kph...until you have to do it again.

That one died with only 47k miles on the clock, and I'd bought it only the year before, with 30,348 miles on it.
I buy used cars, trucks and boats, but preferably, new motorcycles.
And in that I'm leveraging myself out of roofing sales, I've got to be productive elsewhere for an income.
There are a couple of options open to me, both worth serious consideration. And in the meanwhile, I'm doing some part time, just to pay the bills.
I won't be able to truly enjoy Moronity, until a certain inheritance develops, and I'm in no hurry for any relatives to die. So, that'll happen when it happens. Not before.
Meanwhile, I buy my cigars by the box, and not the gross.

I buy used cars, trucks and boats, but preferably, new motorcycles.
And in that I'm leveraging myself out of roofing sales, I've got to be productive elsewhere for an income.
There are a couple of options open to me, both worth serious consideration. And in the meanwhile, I'm doing some part time, just to pay the bills.
I won't be able to truly enjoy Moronity, until a certain inheritance develops, and I'm in no hurry for any relatives to die. So, that'll happen when it happens. Not before.
Meanwhile, I buy my cigars by the box, and not the gross.

15 years ago, or so, my son-in-law worked for United airlines.. he gave us buddy passes to use on our trip to Colorado.. beeeyootiful on the way out there... on the way home, storms all over the country made stand-by flight impossible.. we were stuck in Denver airport for 8 hours when it became apparent we were not getting out anytime soon.
My wife was suffering from inner ear disorder then, which only exacerbated the whole thing.. she was miserable and just wanted to get home.
We rented a one-way from Denver to Chicago and I drove the whole way overnight.. luckily, the only car they had was a Volvo which hugged the road through pouring rains.. I was doing 90 mph on I-80 and no cops in sight.. made it back in 18 hours.. I never want to repeat that road trip again!

Small, private Christian colleges. Many still require weekly chapel attendance. Now they have all the problems large public and private institutions possess due to human nature, the fall etc., but on a much smaller scale and level of seriousness in general. You'll find many have a great mix of faculty from all Christian faith traditions with the vast majority quite conservative.

First cross country trip I drove was from NJ to San Diego. On the other side of Ft Worth the low plains start and it shocked me how open the land and skies were. Then when I got to the Permian Basin it was like driving across the ocean.

No luck, but I found a solution. I nuked it. Saved some major components, but nuked all but two of the obsolete computers I have because those two work. I was hoping to build a working Linux/XP machine to give to a friend who is a non-user of computers, but it's easier to find something newer that works.
Pretty sure the MB was bad, because it wouldn't boot from a known-good hard drive.
I'm making a dump run tomorrow. If I see a likely-looking tower case in the "electronics pile" I will snag it. Start afresh.

Anyway, the widow did not pay attention to the direction of the wind, she took the urn, threw it in to the wind, and ended up covered in ashes.
It was awkward.

I saw that in a movie. I forget which one.
Initially I planned to scatter his ashes at the place where we used to go camping. I'd thought I would do it the summer after he died. But his eldest daughter just wasn't ready to deal with that. I hugged her and told her that there was no rush at all, and it could wait as long as she needed.
I like having him near me. It would have destroyed me to bury him. I'm glad we discussed this in our various conversations over the years. You just never know.

Even if the Earth is warming, I wouldn't trust them to tell me, because of all of the "credible climate scientists" that have manufactured data to support their political agenda. Trusting a proven liar is never wise.
My personal opinion is that there is probably some warming going on, but it's 100% due to natural cycles. Expecting carbon dioxide released by industry to wreck the climate is like pissing in the ocean and expecting your contribution to turn it yellow. It's a gross miscalculation of scale. We're a gnat fart in an atomic blast, when you compare what nature does to itself.
Even if we released 100% of the carbon dioxide stored in fossil fuels, it would not make the Earth uninhabitable. Why? Logic, my friends. It's all in the name. Fossil fuels. Everything that comes out of them was once in the atmosphere and biosphere during previous life-friendly eras. We're not creating anything new that wasn't here previously, only re-releasing what was already here at some point.

They don't want you to think about the solutions. Like carbon credits. Let's take money from carbon-producers (which eliminates zero carbon), and give it to non-carbon-producers. Quality of life of ncp's goes up. ncp's become carbon producers, because happy economies make carbon. Total carbon increases.
Now, if any of the stuff in the first paragraph mattered, how did we get to the second paragraph as a solution? You're not supposed to ask that! Argue about whether it'll be +0.4C or +0.6C in a hunnerd years!

The local rag newspaper put the weather report right next to it's re-reporting from the AP about how horrible global warming is and how we are all responsible for it. Damn, just made me want to go out and warm up the car for about an hour. Just doing my best to bring it on, baby.
No sense of irony on their part, at all.
I have about 2 feet of global warming piled up in the front yard to go with this fine, sunbathing type weather.

The Chinook has set in good here. Temps in the 40's Fahrenheit. Snow has melted like crazy, and i have ponds in the yard. Large patches of yard are quite free of snow, although piles and drifts remain, particularly in sheltered places.

A Guy (Crew Chief) at MCAS Futema did the same thing with C-117 (Super DC-3). Flew from Okinawa to Mainland Japan and back.
He got busted down to PVT/E-1 and lost a bunch of pay, but served out his enlistment. He told the story in a group legal briefing at MCAS Yuma in 79. The Major giving the briefing was laughing his ass off. It was rather funny. Evidently, it didn't hurt him too bad. He made it back to L/Cpl. No idea what discharge he got.

add milk and half and half, and heat til hot
add rest of butter and let it melt
drop in oysters and reduce heat til they curl
