Josh Earnest: Why Didn't We Punish China for the Millions of Sensitive Personal Disclosures Stolen in the OPM Hack? Because F*** You, That's Why

Here's the real reason:

It's because the OPM hack chiefly affected military personnel, who are not People Who Count.

But Russia -- or whoever -- screwed with People Who Count when they hacked the DNC and Jon Podesta.

"What we've seen is that these are two cyber incidents that are malicious in nature but materially different," Earnest said, defending the administration's decision to issue sanctions in response to the Russian hack but not the Chinese hack.

The OPM hack was one of the largest data breaches in the history of the United States. More than 20 million people were affected, with the Chinese gaining possession of names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, places of residence, and sensitive information from background investigations.

"I'm just saying that it's different than seeking to interfere in the conduct of a U.S. national election," Earnest said.

"It's different because I said so" is pretty much the most contemptuous answer you can offer. You might as well just take your dick all the way out and say, "Because some people just matter more in this world."

30 The OPM incident - and Vic is correct, it was not an outside hack, but an "inside job" - was probably the most serious intelligence/counter-intelligence disaster in modern US history.

Impossible to say from this vantage point, of course (and also hard to estimate from inside, where the damage of intel penetrations etc. is mostly informed guesswork). But extremely grievous, to be sure. Why? It gives foreign powers an unheard-of windfall of personal info with which to do their recruitment/vulnerability targeting.

This is, among all the others, one of the most astonishing gigantic stories/scandals/disasters that has passed almost without notice or brouhaha in the last 8 years.

A hilariously stupid self-inflicted phishing penetration of a private US entity (the DNC)? About which very few voters heard very much, cuz material divulged was negative for the media party? Not worth 2 days of stories. Much less "sanctions" (however meaningless) against a major world power.

"If there is anyone to blame, it is the perpetrators," OPM Director
Katherine Archuleta told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee Tuesday
when asked if anyone at her agency is responsible for the problem.

"This is due to decades of lack of investments in the systems that I
inherited when I came in," said Archuleta, who joined that agency in
2013.

55 Agreed, Lizzy.

That's why I find myself pausing and puzzling over the exact right sort of superlative to use when describing the endless cascade of idiocy from the cretins in the Beltway.

But the OPM thing - a penetration due to unbelievable laxity and stupidity, not a "hack" per se - might just be the most consequential. I doubt the counter-intel guys even have a framework to use in evaluating it - there's never been a remotely comparable disaster in modern times (that I'm aware of).

Things like Aldrich Ames, the Walker family ring - those are obviously disastrous, but in a conventional sort of way. You have some parameters to assess the damage. In this case, the damage is sort of theoretically limitless, on the counter-intel side.

Given that it takes media outrage to produce a scandal, he's right.

GW Bush, whatever else one might think of his politics, was about as squeaky clean as a politico can be. So the MSM just made up scandals out of nothing.

Obama, OTOH, has his minions commit actual crimes --- major crimes --- but there's no scandal. The media sweeps it away and, if anyone tries to deal with it, the media attacks them as "being political."

Not me. That was my biggest problem with the series. I never found myself caring at all about the mechanicals. Nor the humans, for that matter.

Much like voting, sensitive personnel and intel info is perfectly adequately handled with paper and ink.

Posted by: rhomboid at January 03, 2017 06:50 PM (QDnY+)

You are correct: the SF-86s are now digital and we are fvked.

The reaction of the Obama administration to this unmitigated disaster of a data breach? Zip.Zero.Zilch.Nada. The nicest thing I can say about those a$$holes is that they are feckless.

Heads need to roll and I hope the Trumpenfuhrer is ready to do so.

200 I've been saying this for weeks; I and a lot of other feds got all our info ripped by the Chinese and I got a free credit watch for 12 months. That's it. The Russians maybe hurt Fat Cersei Lannister and Obama is a tough guy suddenly.

Fuck off.

201 Chinese spy, it's not only what he took out but what he put in. A bit of the old in and out. Maybe they retrieved Obama's birth, SSN, and passport records.

204 Netflix question - I added a true crime series "Real Detective" to my list yesterday. Today, it's not there. I can see it when I do a search for it, but the only option I have is to remove it from my list. It's not an expired show, since I found it by browsing through the new releases. Anything like this happen to anyone before?

I gotta question your credibility in that claim.

In fact, I'm just going to come right out and call you a liar.

Posted by: ghbucky at January 03, 2017 07:32 PM (D2q91)

210 Ain't it psychopaths who supposedly can say utterly false and easily debunked lies and completely believe theirselves. I.e., feel no shame.

Cause that's a liberal. Truly kool-aid drinkers of the highest order.

211 I wonder if Josh's interview included questions like, 'can you lie with a straight face?'

'Is there anything you just refuse to say?'

Posted by: AlaBAMA at January 03, 2017 07:39 PM (pUDQf)

212 For the progressive left the only "real" war is the one fought with their domestic political rivals. Party uber alles. The Chinese OPM hack would have been thought a serious problem if it interfered with their hold on power, but it didn't, so far.

The "Russian hack" is just an excuse for losing power. A scapegoat. Whether the Russians had anything to do with the disclosure of the DNC and/or Podesta emails? Who knows, there are powerful intelligence agencies that have "skin in this game" now. Any truth will be swarmed around with lies.

Truth, once these people are involved, is a bare quark, never seen without its screen of virtual gluons, virtual quark pairs, and others more exotic. Pull hard on Truth and you'll only get another truth/quark surrounded by new virtual lies/particles.

How Microsoft Is Trying to Calm Fears About Spy 'Back Doors' in Its Code

Posted by: Mortimer, Finish Her! at January 03, 2017 09:45 PM (zu88C)

214 The
effort to build trust follows heightened suspicions in the region after
former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden leaked
documents in 2013 that showed the agency was capturing massive amounts of data from emails handled by major U.S. technology companies, including Microsoft.

Posted by: Mortimer, Finish Her! at January 03, 2017 09:47 PM (zu88C)

215 The Chinese Hack endangers our National Security, opening up individuals to blackmail and identifying others who should not be identified.

In other words, Obama loves it. Retaliate? For what? Helping Obama in his treasonous project? I'm surprised he didn't give them a medal.

What's rich is hearing the Left call Trump a "Putin pawn". Obama was Putin's blow-up doll--and they didn't object once. Fix your make-up, man; you're an embarrassment.

Posted by: The Gipper Lives at January 03, 2017 09:53 PM (Ndje9)

216 "60 I'm a vet who may have been affected...."

For every vet who had a security clearance (and I can't imagine there are many who don't), there's no "may" about it. If you're a vet, you have been affected.

And it isn't just the vets. If you have a parent, sibling or child who has or had a security clearance, then you're affected too.

"...These people need to burn in hell."

Goes without saying. Their neglect made millions of those in service to the country vulnerable to whatever the Chinese might come up with. The press and the D's (BIRM) just breezed right past this scandal, but this was a huge loss.

Somewhat OT, but the other one that still chaps my ass is that Obama lost an entire Marine squadron of Harriers to the Taliban, and because nobody talks about it, it is as if it never happened.

217 #209: I got a letter from the government telling me my personal info was part of that so-called "hack". They offered to pay for identity protection for me for... a while.

IIRC, it was more than a year, and it was some other company besides Life Lock. But Albie's version isn't too far from what was in that letter.

He might just be exaggerating a bit; I don't think he's being dishonest.
