Posted by: Kindltot at January 03, 2017 09:51 AM (9MInk) According to wiki: According to Leonard J. Slatkes, the painting's symbolism likely derives from the Apollo Sauroktonos theme in which a poisonous salamander triumphs over the god, while the arrangement of various fruits suggests The Four Temperaments, with the salamander being the symbol of fire in Caravaggio's time. The salamander also had phallic connotations, and the painting might have been inspired by a Martial epigram: "Ad te reptani, puer insidiose, lacertae Parce: cupit digitis illa perire tuis. (Spare this lizard crawling towards you, treacherous boy/It wants to die between your fingers)" Posted by: josephistan at January 03, 2017 09:59 AM (7HtZB) 82

Interesting and unexpected painting by Caravaggio. For all the technical talent it shows, this one has the feel of a practice piece, both for the artist and model. (I'll forego the inevitable remarks about the sissy boy pose.) The huge difference in lighting the two versions also makes me think of an etude.
I'm not sure about the fruit in the painting but I have a vague memory that salamanders had magical or prophetic associations. Time for some research. Posted by: JTB at January 03, 2017 10:02 AM (V+03K) 96

Say what you will about the boy with the flower in his hair.
He probably walked the streets of his Italian town with a dagger concealed on his person, and a sword hanging in view. And knew how to use both. The peasant class had no weapons, as they could not afford them, nor could afford the training. But the upper class walked armed. It is Caravaggio's first obviously classical work. The boy is a muscular ephebe, lolling on a lectus, an ancient couch, and dressed not in the flimsy shirt of a contemporary musician but in heavier stuff, reminiscent of the carved drapery in ancient Roman sculpture. His hair, surely a wig, is crowned with a wreath of black and white grapes and their leaves, and he offers the viewer a glass kylix of red wine, the cup of pleasure. The objects on the table are palpable under natural light which, however, casts no shadow on the background. The illusion is as seductive as the boy himself. He offers not only wine but himself as well: his right hand toys with his sash, which barely holds his drapery together. The image is a kind of imposture: the pose and costume, the affected coiffure, plucked eyebrows, pudgy hand, and plump hairless body are betrayed by the disturbingly muscular arm and the sullen provocative expression Posted by: RWC - Team BOHICA at January 03, 2017 10:27 AM (2x9LM) 191

I read an article on Right Wing News earlier today about Christians being the world's most persecuted group.
Is there at least a slight possibility the new president will mention that reality, at least in passing? I don't recall the outgoing president, who has at some point professed to be a Christian, ever expressing concern for Christian communities being attacked many places in the world. That would of course involved the role of his Muslims in the persecution. It seems odd that Obama would not be concerned about the suffering of his spiritual brothers and sisters. I have spent the better part of the past two weeks over there and she's right. In June, he asked me for help with the riding mower and while I am fairly good at repairs, he is an engineer. I didn't want to believe in my Father's descent into whatever is happening, but it is Reality. Please pray for him and my Mother. This is confusing to me, as I see him in a lucid state, mostly. Whatever is happening to him is a gradual reduction in cognitive function. I'm going to be okay because of my Faith. I'll be the rock because I've learned Love and Passing from Jesus, our Lord. Caravaggio was a well known pedophile. He was literally the Michael Jackson of the Renaissance. They even did a story about it in a major magazine about how he has modern day child molestor fans. This is like showing Michael Jackson with Webster on his lap, if you're not creeped out by this there's something wrong with you.
