Boy Bitten by a Lizard
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio

There are two versions of this painting; one in the Fondazione Roberto Longhi in Florence, and the one above in the National Gallery in London.

They are almost identical, but I vastly prefer the National Gallery version; it seems painted by a more skilled hand, and the light is much, much better.

Although I would take either one as a gift if any of you are so inclined, and are also skilled in the practical art of art theft.

Was it important that it was a lizard that bit him? Is there an allegory here? It looks like something that's important as a stepping stone to the next thing, rather than important in itself.

In short is this some allegory, or did someone come to Michelangelo and say, "you know my son had the funniest thing happen today, and I want you to paint it so when his betrothed comes over to meet him before the wedding we can trot it out and embarrass him deeply. . ."

According to Leonard J. Slatkes, the painting's symbolism likely derives from the Apollo Sauroktonos theme in which a poisonous salamander triumphs over the god, while the arrangement of various fruits suggests The Four Temperaments, with the salamander being the symbol of fire in Caravaggio's time. The salamander also had phallic connotations, and the painting might have been inspired by a Martial epigram: "Ad te reptani, puer insidiose, lacertae Parce: cupit digitis illa perire tuis. (Spare this lizard crawling towards you, treacherous boy/It wants to die between your fingers)"

95 Interesting and unexpected painting by Caravaggio. For all the technical talent it shows, this one has the feel of a practice piece, both for the artist and model. (I'll forego the inevitable remarks about the sissy boy pose.) The huge difference in lighting the two versions also makes me think of an etude.

I'm not sure about the fruit in the painting but I have a vague memory that salamanders had magical or prophetic associations.

Time for some research.
