Why Do Progressive Movies Like "Miss Sloane" Keep Cratering?

First, let's get the factual predicate out of the way: the anti-gun, NRA-Are-Big-Meanies film Miss Sloane is an enormous failure.

[T]wo weeks after its national release, it has made only $3.2 million. During its second weekend, it averaged just $102 per movie theater per day. With a ticket price of $10.30 per adult, that comes to an average of only 9.9 people a day seeing the movie in any given theater. At least people had no problem finding a good seat.

And it wasn't for lack of trying to get people to show up. Out of the 200 highest-grossing movies of 2016, only ten exceeded the $15.9 million television advertising budget of Miss Sloane, and seven of those did so by very small amounts. Miss Sloane spent more than the Star Wars spinoff Rogue One, Star Trek, Pete’s Dragon, Arrival, Doctor Strange, and Hacksaw Ridge. It had twice the advertising budget of such hits as Sully, The Girl on the Train, and The Secret Life of Pets. For every dollar spent on advertising, Miss Sloane brought in just 21 cents in ticket sales.

By this measure, it came in dead last out of the 200 top-grossing movies in 2016. No one else was even close. Coming in second-to-last was Collateral Beauty, which made 53 cents per advertising dollar. The average movie made almost $2 for each dollar spent on advertising.

Let me propose a theory, which I think is original, as to why progressive movies keep bombing.

The key to any exploitation movie the novel depiction some trend or fad. It has to be novel. Surfing movies were gonzo box office in 1967 but not so much now.

These exploitation films -- progsploitation movies -- seek to exploit a faddish interest in progressive political "discourse."

And it's not that there's no audience for this. There is. Even if you say "Progressive movies alienate half the country" -- so what? You don't need but 1% of the country to see your movie and you've got a hit.

Action movies alienate more than half the country-- the half that just doesn't like action movies or violence in films. Yet they frequently make a lot of money.

That's not the problem, I don't think.

It's not that there is no interest in progsploitation.

It's that the market is already saturated with progsploitation material -- on television.

In the 1950s, Hollywood faced an existential threat. And I don't mean from Joe McCarthy or Richard Nixon or even Robert F. Kennedy.

I mean they faced the existential threat of a new entrant into the market, and one with huge advantages over movies -- TV shows were free (or free-ish, once you got past the big initial investment and once you accepted that the "charge" for TV was permitting your mind to be rented for advertising).

And TV was remarkably convenient -- you didn't even have to leave your couch.

Hollywood responded to this threat by offering up technical spectacles that TV just couldn't. They offered color. They offered even Technicolor, whatever that is. They offered widescreen and Cinemascope.

They began focusing on fare that TV wasn't offering -- fewer movies were set in homes and offices, more were set in great open deserts, whether those of the old American west or the Biblical near east.

Knowing they could not compete on any grounds that TV could compete on, Hollywood did its level best to offer stuff TV couldn't.

Compare that to today.

Are movies like Miss Sloane offering the public things they can't see on easy, comfy-couch TV?

Well, Law & Order notoriously offered progsploitation political themes for 14 or 15 years straight. It was never about the murder -- no, it was about the gun manufacturer who made the gun that wound up in the murderer's hands.

Shows like The Good Wife and Madame Secretary and all the rest of the programming-for-progressive-women offer up progressive political themes every single week.

I'm sure Miss Sloane offers up some rapid-fire (and very dubious) #GunFacts as some progsploitation to make its would-be audience moist in the pants.

But golly gee willickers-- John Oliver offers up rapid-fire progsploitation factutainment every Sunday night.

Besides, John Oliver is "real" and offering "#Science," not some cooked-up pretend drama. And anyone who really #LovesScience will prefer, obviously, the English twit's rapid-fire "facts" over some pretend Hollywood drama.

Ah, but Miss Sloane can give the audience profanity and Some Adult Material and Themes that TV can't, right?

Well. Except for every premium cable TV show, which gives you all the f-bombs and robot-rape you could imagine.

It's not that there aren't progressives who don't want progsploitation factutainment -- it's that this market is so damn well served by tv (is there anything else even on TV?) that no one's going to buy a ticket to see the cow when TV will show them all the milk they could ever want to see.

This type of movie is doomed. It can't give you anything you haven't seen already. Law & Order was, it claimed, "ripped from the headlines." Movies like Miss Sloane are ripped from Law & Order, season 8.

I'm sure Hollywood will keep pumping these movies out, though, because progsploitation is only tangentially about appeasing the public's demand for progressive propaganda.

It's much more about appeasing Hollywood's desire to make progsploitation films, whether they make a dime or not.

6 It's really simple, people go to movies to be entertained. They don't pay on average of $10/ticket to be lectured by liberal assholes. Yes Hollywood completed with TV in the 50s by offering widescreen spectacles like Ben Hurr.

19 Also, with the cost of seeing a movie in a theater, you have to really want to see it to spring for the cost. In Michigan, may be higher in places like New York and California, a matinee ticket is about $10, the smallest popcorn pop combo is $7 or $8. That's the child's combo, the others are considerably more. I don't even know what the cost is for evening shows or the adult combos because I never do those, but for an adult couple one movie and refreshments is $40 +.

I love the big theater movie experience, and I appreciate the fact that the higher prices are because the multiplex gives you a lot more choices of movies to see. But even liberals don't want to spend that to be preached at by some chick movie.

65 I agree Ace, that's a great deal of the problem. The other is that these movies are basically preachy, and people just don't care for that. They want a movie to be fun or emotionally compelling, an escape, not a sermon. That's something that "Christian filmmakers" so often fail to understand.

Amazing Grace was profoundly Christian, but not preachy. It made a great series of points about morality and truth, but in the story, instead of lecturing the audience or bashing them over the head.

Leftist films are the equivalent of Kirk Cameron's earnestly Christian films; they aren't terrible but they lecture and preach rather than show and entertain, and people don't care for it.

Oddly enough, the "Left Behind" film wasn't like that, it was more a strange science fiction film involving some quasi-Biblical themes of prophecy.

What is the world box office market for movies like Miss Sloane? I think that's something that is missed in the accounting process

Posted by: Lurker primus at December 30, 2016 01:56 PM (DhPrq)

Actually, the world market for such films is virtually nil. Just think about the difficulties of dubbing/subtitling a dialog-heavy film like a typical legal drama. Now consider the cultural subtexts, which are uniquely American, nowhere else in the world are gun rights being fought over like they are here.

It's just easier and more lucrative to dub or subtitle a Michael Bay-ish splodeyfest into Urdu for the foreign markets. The American films that consistently do well overseas are the splashy trashy films.

77 OK, I went and looked it up. It was considered a box office success in its category: a "documentary".

The film opened in New York City and Los Angeles on May 24, 2006. On Memorial Day weekend, it grossed an average of $91,447 per theater, the highest of any movie that weekend and a record for a documentary, though it was only playing on four screens at the time.

The film has grossed over $24 million in the U.S., making it the tenth-highest-grossing documentary in the U.S. (from 1982 to the present). It grossed nearly $26 million in foreign countries, the highest being France, where it grossed $5 million.

Of course for most films, $24M would not be considered a success, but for the red-headed stepchild category that it is in, it did well.

78 I saw some TV ads. Avoided talking guns. Made it look like a House of Cards / All the President's Men thriller. Nothing worse than being badly misled into seeing a movie. So the few who went were disappointed, and it got negative word of mouth.

Manchester by The Sea ads avoid the big plot surprise.

79 With shows like Law and Order: "leftist theme of the week" out there, why go to a film and pay 25 bucks for a night of lectures you can see for free at home? Film makers are struggling to pull in viewers as is, and charging far too much for their product.

TV has figured out how to work in this market: reality TV is incredibly cheap to produce and often has no stars to pay. Even Mythbusters has turned into a crappy Reality TV competition. Movie makers have to work out a cheaper way to put out movies and stop overpaying stars to work for them.

Like money. Hollywood makes one PC bomb after another despite the fact those movies are losers. Remember all those shitty "American troops are evil!" films that came out during the Bush era that cratered, while movies like "The Passion of the Christ" and "Grand Torino" did great? I highly doubt that movie execs made "The Bells of St. Mary's" or "The 10 Commandments" or "The Song of Bernadette" because they were pious themselves. No, they recognized there was a market for such films.

Intelligent non-ideologues would have marveled at the huge success of "The Passion" and sought to emulate it. Hollywood is now ideological and unintelligent.

Same with these idiot business owners who want to "punish" Trump voters. You'd think that a cereal company, ESPN, a spice business or a restaurant owner would realize that offending a huge percentage of potential customers would hurt their bottom line. 84 One of the major reasons so much crap gets made into movies is that the pitch has at most 30 seconds to capture the attention of a studio or a producer. Because most of them are saturated in liberal/progressive worldview, these kinds of movies get green lighted cause the studio 'gets' the premise. But they always die because there isn't an actual story, just a point to be made. Boring for everybody.

86 BTW, speaking of guns, there was a big 2nd Amendment win in Nevada this week.

In November, a background check initiative funded by Bloomberg passed by 1%. It requires all transfers to include background check, even if you are just loaning someone a gun on a hunting trip.

They purposefully stated in the initiative that the background check must be done by the FBI and not Nevada's current system, in order to avoid having the cost to the state taxpayers listed.

The thing is, the FBI said they won't do the background checks, which means that by the text of the initiative, all gun transfers become illegal.

The state's AG (one of the only conservative and competent Republicans in the state) issued a ruling that said the initiative was unenforceable and people didn't have to comply with it...

like a little government compulsion to get more viewers.

The movie's producers gave copies away to schools for free - actively engaged them in incorporating it into lesson plans, etc. That's why you can't assume a slanted documentary or historical fiction movie (like the 4 hr Che movie) has no audience if it's a flop in theaters - as long as it gets into the classroom and/or high rotation on cable/PBS it will have an impact.

Posted by: Lizzy at December 30, 2016 02:11 PM (NOIQH)

89 I haven't seen the film and probably never will, but how much of its failure might be attributable to the outcome of the election making a successful fight against the NRA an all but remote possibility now?

I could see Prog womyn getting psyched to go see a film about evil kid-killing NRA/gun industry lobbyists had Hillary won as a lead-in to events that would end in some victories for them - i.e., replacing Scalia with a prog to overturn Heller, President using the bully pulpit for new Assault Weapons Ban, administrative actions/executive orders, etc.

Even if they're not politically sophisticated they have to know that these are now an impossibility. It would seem to be the sort of thing that would depress them now much more than it might excite them, since the villains in the film are going to have a good run for the next four years.

Maybe the studio hedged that HRC was unbeatable in 2016. Fake news has real victims.

93 Me thinks the only agenda a director (or novelist, or screenwriter) should have is telling a great story well. Pure political agendas don't work.
IMHO this applies to Christian movies as well. As a Christian I might thoroughly enjoy a movie that reflects my faith--doesn't mean it's a good movie that would appeal to a larger audience. And isn't that the issue with prog movies? They're essentially theology.

Tolkien's books and the novels of C.S. Lewis deal with theological themes but they're great books that can be read on other levels.

My thoughts at least.

Record execs in the 60s were notorious for not knowing what the hell was going on in music or liking what they were producing, but smart enough to work with it and make money anyway. Jimi Hendrix? The headache I get. But, it sells!

These days nobody seems to comprehend this idea. You don't have to like it, but if you are smart you'll take advantage of it. Remember a few years back when Hollywood decided they'd start up these "faith-based studios" and make more of those kind of movies? I'm not sure a single one was made. There's a painful need for people in charge of these industries who get the business rather than the secular religion they all follow.

I got hooked on Stargate SGC-1 and have the entire thing on DVD. I've binge watched it at least three, maybe four times. The first time through was to watch the show. The second time it was a study; how to tell a story, make a movie, TV series, and I listened to all the commentary tracks. By then I had the formula, and studied the actors, and the directing.

By the middle of the last binge, the liberal talking points stuck out like a sore thumb. It got tiresome.

That's my point, liberal political ideology is pervasive; it's everywhere, in everything. Snide little off hand comments, liberal character stereotypes for both the good and the bad guys. There is never a conservative point of view that isn't a negative stereotype. Avatar being a good example.

Major Winchester was still a conservative caricature, but he was a character who was not unsympathetic, could hold his own, and could give back just as good as he got.

If there's a boycott, it's about conservatives tuning out of popular culture in general where only the largest elements get through. Combine that with balkanization of the culture at large due to, at first, cable followed by the internet, and it becomes very easy to be entertained with new things while ignoring larger trends.

besides, Hollyweird makes crap, and the people in the industry tend to be lieberal assholes, so why should i give them my money?

209 It used to be that Big Tentpole Movies might get up to 40% foreign revenue, with the rest domestic. That's flipped, as the big money is making a high budget flick with lots of explosions and little dialogue that can sell tickets in China.

Which is why the Oscar contenders keep getting smaller and smaller.

212 That's clever, but I think there's another dimension to it as well. Think of an advertisement as a production of something. Obviously, that production costs money and does nothing by itself. It's not like a product that can immediately be sold for profit. But the expectation is that it will pay for itself later on, through convincing people to behave in ways that eventually generate profit. I think the function of movies like this is not necessarily to be profitable in and of themselves, but to convince people to behave in ways that are in line with what the financer wants. And that goes for a lot of media. Salon has been "in business" for many years, but has operated at a loss fpr most of them. I thought Newsweek is dead, yet here is this fellow Eichenwald. *Someone* evidently thinks it's worthwhile keeping these zombies shambling along.

220 It's much more about appeasing Hollywood's desire to make progsploitation films, whether they make a dime or not.

Also laundering the profits from the action movies. The most creative people in Hollywood are the accountants.

To go along with the movies must offer something novel thingy, here's my take on the rise of movie theaters with reclining seats and seat side food service and the whole bistro movie theater experience.

Televisions are now so high quality, and so cheap, that you can get the same spectacle in your own home, on your couch, without all the people texting and talking and with your own food and own bathroom and hit pause when you want that going to the movies has to turn back into An Experience to get people out of the house.

Let's look at the economics of it. Taking myself to the movies at a regular showing, not a matinee, will be around $11-12 a ticket, maybe a bit more. Popcorn and a drink will run me $8. That's more or less the cost of two and a half months of Netflix streaming. That's a fifth of my Prime annual subscription.

Do I want to do that or do I want to say screw it, what's On Demand or Netflix or Prime or Hulu. My own place and my own food and drinks and nobody around me and if I want to text during the movie, who cares? To say nothing of torrenting which is wrong and bad and badwrong.

So how to get people to go to the movies again? Either do what the tiny local place by me does and have a no frills no stadium seats basic movie theater that shows first run movies for $4.25 but there are no advance or online sales and you better get there an hour early if you want to see the new Pixar or go high end and turn it into a big night out.

I've always preferred the idea of fluctuating ticket prices.

The highest prices will be for big blockbusters in their first weekend. The lowest prices will be for the smaller films in their last weekend in the theater.

Assuming I didn't have a 2 year old to take care of all the time, I'd probably go to the movies more if I could see a movie that's been out for a month for $3-4. When I lived near a second run theater showing movies 3-4 months after they'd been released for about a dollar, I went all the time. Quite literally all the freaking time.

Le sigh...I miss those days.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison at December 30, 2016 02:42 PM (YSdvs)

231 [T]wo weeks after its national release, it has made only $3.2 million. During its second weekend, it averaged just $102 per movie theater per day. With a ticket price of $10.30 per adult, that comes to an average of only 9.9 people a day seeing the movie in any given theater. At least people had no problem finding a good seat.

This brings up one of my pet peeves.

I don't care about box office receipts. I care about actual the number of tickets sold. I want to know how many warm bodies Hollywood succeeds in bringing in to the theater to watch the movies it produces.

To me, that is an important statistic, but in order to find out what is, you have to make some estimations of average ticket price and then do the calculation. That's BS. But I suspect this is a number Hollywood doesn't want to talk about.

Losing money is not how you launder money. The mob still wants to run the pizza parlor front at a profit.

I also cringe when someone says "they're doing it for the write-off.' Losing money is still losing money, even if you get a deduction for part of it.

Back in the 1970s, Dino De Laurentis got his movies financed by enabling his backers to get around monetary exchange controls, but that's a different thing.

Hollywood will back a vanity project to get a star to do another project, but never by planning to take a bath like Miss Sloane. Truth is that they don't really know what will work and what won't work even though they pretend that they do.

Yeah, the little theater by me that shows first run movies for $4.25 a show does TONS of business because you can actually afford to go. I should note that it's a huge scandal in town how much they've raised ticket prices since it used to be $2.

What you trade off is the quality of the experience. The prices went up because they went full digital but it's not THX and it's not IMAX and it's mid size screens and it's old fashioned wooden seats and kids running around.

There's nothing wrong with that but it's not the same as seen Rogue One on a yuuuuuuge screen with an assigned seat that reclines.

267 There are a lot of anti-gun heroes in media.
Superman, for one.

Some Batmans, but not the latest Batman -- he picked up an automatic and went to town on a bad guy in Batman vs Superman.

Doctor Who, except for the 3rd doctor.

MacGyver.

Captain America.

268 255 I do, but only because it plays into a different pet peeve of mine.

People always say this movie cost $65 mm to produce and promote and it grossed $100 mm.

Don't theaters get half of the gross? That would make this move a loser. I may not understand what I'm talking about, but this bothers me.
Posted by: Bandersnatch, gentleman cad at December 30, 2016 02:50 PM (mgbwf)

====================

Generally the math is this:

Budget x 2 (for marketing, which generally matches a film's budget) divided by .6 (for the theater's take).

For, for example:

Ghostbusters (2016) cost about $170 million to make. Assume that the marketing push was that size takes us to $340 million total. Divide that by .6 and we get $566 million dollars, which is the movie's real break even point.

Paul Feig, the director, verified in an interview before the film's release that it would need to make about $500 million to break even.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema moved into Omaha about a year ago, and it is incredible. The Sunday matinee price is about the same as all the other theaters in Omaha, but Alamo has a yu-u-u-ge! reproduction of the original Death Star in their lobby that lights up and makes the appropriate noises when you sit in the Emperor's Throne and push the button. Instead of a concession stand, attendants take your order at your seat. They serve real popcorn with real melted butter, and drink and popcorn refills are free. Just write your order on a card and prop it up. And, again, it's no more expensive than any where else. The best thing, though, is Alamo is death and taxes on cell phones and talking, and won't let late arrivals enter the theater. Once the lights go down, you seldom hear anything except the movie itself.

You want your "points" above the line (before expense deductions) not "below." Any good agent with an A list star client gets this (because the agent gets 10%, and so really cares).

If you're below, then they slap on all the studio overhead -- which includes expenses on losing pictures.

Art Buchwald won a plagiarism lawsuit over Coming to America. When it came time for damages the studio claimed that the highest grossing film in the year of its release lost money. The court smacked the studio down.

That and a severe audit are definitely called for; these guys are basically stealing from the government and their own workers.

Seriously its not that hard to make movies cheaper. Most great films made were done on a shoestring budget because Studios would not give them what they wanted. 324 I have multiple theories about this, and each may be correct in different situations and in different degrees:

(1) The Hollywood Left honestly and sincerely believes their values reflect those of the majority of Americans. They really and truly believe, deep in what passes for their hearts, that most Americans loathe the military and the conscienceless baby-killers who make up their ranks; that most Americans feel the need for gun control, weapons bans, and other prohibitions, and that is is only the tiny minority embodied by the diabolical NRA and their fanatics that oppose it; that most Americans are perfectly comfortable with homosexual marriage and gender fluidity; that most Americans see the need for an overarching government to protect us from bad choices and to provide a living, medical care, and creature comforts for the unfortunate among us, which is to say, all minorities, all who are anything other that the standard ruling class, and everyone who is oppressed, triggered, or microaggressed by the institutional unfairness that is America. In short, the Hollywood Left has its head up its ass.

(2) Perversely, the Hollywood Left also believes that the average American doesn't understand that it wants this, and needs them to articulate it in ways Joe Sixpack cannot, through the pervasive media and entertainment industry, to help them understand that they want these things, and get everyone working together to accomplish these goals. In short, the Hollywood Left is a bunch of community organizers on a national scale.

(3) In a great replaying of The Producers, Hollywood may have found a way to make money by losing money. Performance guarantees, other people's money, tax breaks (especially in California), and creative bookkeeping on a scale that would make a televangelist blush work to ensure that George Clooney gets paid, even if MegaPictures Studios and HugeCo Underwriting lose their shirts.

(4) Hollywood A-listers know they don't deserve what they have and their guilt drives them to Do Something in return. To Give Back To The Community. So their efforts championing the cause du jour makes them feel better. How much of Other People's Money they piss away in the process of Making A Statement doesn't matter.

Or, I could be completely wrong.

331 Theaters make their money selling popcorn, not tickets.

Basically, but the longer a movie is in the theaters, the more money the theater owners get. Its a sliding deal; the first week they make basically nothing then each week after they get a larger cut. Studios prefer in and out fast movies with a huge opening weekend because they make the most money on them. Films that stay in the theaters for weeks are cutting into potential profits from new screens showing their latest one week wonder.

Same. I think part of it is psychological - I've come out to the theater, so I'm going to watch the movie, not do 100 other things on my phone. People talk about being able to pause at home as a plus, but to me it can be a minus - I'll get distracted and end up pausing and switching to something else, or playing a video game, or, most dastardly of all, posting on the HQ. Since I'm at the theater, the movie is going to play all the way through, whether I'm there or not, so I pay attention.

Truth.
For a while as a teen/youth, I would go see my favorite movies multiple times. I saw "Aladdin" twice, but it really kicked into high gear when I went to see "Speed" four times. God I love that movie. <3 My parents just dropped me off at the theater then picked me up afterward.
I stopped the multiple-viewings thing after "Return of the King," which I saw three or four times. Two Towers I saw two or three times. Fellowship, though, still holds the record at six times.

Plus, stopping the movie kills the flow of the film.

Being in the middle of a chase that's getting your blood pumping and then suddenly pausing it because your wife/daughter/father/whoever needs to go pee and doesn't want to miss anything really kills what the director and editor have been building.

For those who don't believe us, go watch that chase at the end of the Bourne Supremacy, pause it after two minutes, and then come back and see if you feel the same after the pause as before.

385 Here's my theory, Ace, about flop commie flicks:

Hollywood has been taken over by leftists. Period. If they had their druthers, EVERY movie would be socialist tripe.

But the problem is, they know that such movies are generally unpopular, and don't make a profit.

Even so, the goal is to make as many of these movies as possible. That is the ultimate end-point purpose - -to pump out propaganda.

But since the propaganda itself isn't financially self-supporting, thy movie to make these "films" has to come from SOMEWHERE.

But where?

Well, gee, we already have this whole studio setup to make a product -- movies. So let's do this:

Let's make good, entertaining (but not propagandistic) old-timey blockbusters, profit $400 million or so form each one, and then take that money and squander it making 20 commie flops.

The leftists in change don't LIKE these profitable blockbusters. They hate them. But they are necessary to generate the funds to make the unwatchable propaganda reels.

So the blockbusters we see every year are like the studio's "day job" to fund their "true passion."

Of course, they have to pretend to be proud of the blockbusters to promote them -- they can't admit "We're only releasing Superman XII to earn enough money the produce 'America: Land of White Demons.' " But that's what's really happening.

406 "Basically, but the longer a movie is in the theaters, the more money the theater owners get."

Week by week, the theaters get a bigger cut of a shrinking pie -- because few movies have legs past the first couple of weeks.

If the theater didn't get a bigger percentage, they'd drop the movie for another.

Theaters wants asses in seats to sell popcorn to.

The hubby and I cannot watch a movie at home w/o riffing like Crow and Servo every five minutes. It's to the point that we apologize to each other before we even hit play because we KNOW we aren't going to be able to actually watch and enjoy the movie on its own merits.

That's actually one of the reasons we both can't wait to see "John Wick 2." We watched the first one on a whim, fully expecting to do our usual commentary, but ended up sucked into it so much that we actually shut up and WATCHED it.

414 The reason these films flop is because they preach to us lowly unwashed masses.

The problem is the news shows, television shows, politicians, teachers, professors, actors, activists and advertisements already preach down to us 24 hours a day.

452 Well, there might be a bit more to it. The people who would pay for progsploitation are unemployed or underemployed. They can't afford it. The older ones, hippies, yippies, or such, don't believe their own drivel, and certainly aren't going to pay to see their own bullshit. They aren't in it to win, they are in it for all of us to fail. Lucifer doesn't buy sin, he only sells is. Those types are like that.

As for making a dime? They just use what they make on their hits to cover for these. H-wood is a full on propaganda org at this point. They really aren't in it for the money. They have to make some pseudo reasonable hits, at least, in their minds, until our or some other government takes over. I think they think China is their sugar mamma, but I... think they have another thing coming. China, their loverly communist/socialist/fascism... or whatever it is going by today, is downright bottom line all the way. No "soul"... or really soullessness to them. They want cold hard, you can keep the bullshit. You would think they would understand the governments they support, but... no. Which is why they often get lined up and shot along with everyone they hate and wanted shot.

The show must go on!

Posted by: Dr Alice at December 30, 2016 07:36 PM (LaT54)

460 Technicolor is a Hollywood film process to get color images on the screen. We take color for granted. In the early part of the 20th Century, it was very difficult.

The Technicolor process involved shooting the movie with a camera that had three strips of 35mm black and white film running through the camera at the same time. The image coming through the lens entered a prism block and was separated into three identical images. Each image passed through either a red, blue or green filter before exposing the BW film.

The three strips of BW thus recorded the Red, Green and Blue records of the image. These three strips were then printed onto a release print much like a paper color print is made via offset printing using CYMK inks.

Technicolor was a big deal. Very complex but produced beautiful projected color.

This also is why leftist talk radio has failed: there are so many outlets for leftist propaganda, leftist radio talk jocks offer nothing that already can't be found on TV, movies, newspapers, magazines, concerts, lecture halls, etc.

463 It's not that there aren't progressives who don't want progsploitation factutainment -- it's that this market is so damn well served by tv (is there anything else even on TV?) that no one's going to buy a ticket to see the cow when TV will show them all the milk they could ever want to see.

I had to stay in hotels for a week or so over Christmas. Haven't watched broadcast television since the last time I was in a hotel... maybe three years ago. Family stuff was over, there wasn't anything to do before bed time, so I flipped around the dial (kids, that's a round thing we used to... never mind. Look it up)

Not a single channel was broadcasting a scripted (or "reality") show aimed at me, Generic Conservative Man. It was all fare you'd expect a middle aged, white, mildly-progressive woman to watch with a glass of sweet white wine. They're so focused on that demographic (which must be, what, 20% of the country?) nothing else matters.
