Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get into a tomato fight on a Saturday afternoon. Unless you're hungry.

Chess Pie?

Believe it or not, there is such a thing. I have idea why it's called chess pie, but with 2 cups of sugar combined with a tablespoon of vinegar, that seems pretty odd. The recipe looks kind of like a key lime pie without the key lime:

Ingredients

1/2 cup butter
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 eggs
1 tablespoon cornmeal
1/4 cup evaporated milk
1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
1 (9 inch) unbaked pie shell

Directions

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

In a large bowl, mix the butter, sugar and vanilla together. Mix in the eggs, then [hand] stir in the cornmeal, evaporated milk and vinegar until smooth.

Bake for 10 minutes in the preheated oven, then reduce heat to 300 degrees F for 40 minutes. Let cool.

Cut and top servings with whipped cream or alamode

Endgame of the Week (Endgame 240)

It's White to move. Black is at a material disadvantage. What is his game plan to keep White from winning, and can he succeed?

Zombie Problem

What is the best line of play for White? This is a tough problem for zombie, our resident master. Let's see what he can do with it. I'll post the solution with the others in an hour or two, even though I don't understand it well enough to comment on it.

Solutions Update

Problem 1 - White To Play

20161231 - Problem 1.jpg
1r1r4/3n1qkp/5pp1/1BR5/1P6/6QP/6P1/4R2K w - - 0 1

1.Bxd7!

And now, Black will lose the exchange no matter what:

1...Rxd7
2.Qxb8

It's either that or

1...Qxd7
2.Rc7 Qxc7 (2...Rb7 3.Rxd7+ Rdxd7)
3.Qxc7+

Black is down a rook in either case.

Problem 2 - Black To Play

20161231 - Problem 2.jpg
1k5r/pp3N2/2p5/2b1q3/1r2n1pB/8/PPQ3PP/R4R1K b - - 0 1

A simple, forced win for Black:

1...Qxh2+!
2.Kxh2 Rxh4#

Easy-peasy.

Problem 3 - White To Play

20161231 - Problem 3.jpg
rb3r2/1p2qB1p/p5pk/6Nb/1P3pPQ/P3P3/1B5P/R5K1 w - - 0 1

It suddenly occured to me that there may be more than 5 paths. If you've found more, congratulations. All of the mates start with the same first move:

1.Ne6!

Threatens g5+ and mate next move. Another thread is Qxe7. There are a number of plausible Black responses. The obvious one is

1...Qxh4, but then 2.Bg7#

So that's one path. Black can also try

1...Qxe6, to which White will finish him with 2.g5#

That's two.

If Black moves 1...g5 to prevent White playing g5+, White can instead play either 2.Bg7# or 2.Qxh5#

That's three and four.

Lastly

1...Rxf7

This is the variation chosen by my chess app. If prevents Bg7#, but White has other resources.

2.g5+ Qxg5+
3.Qxg5#

And that's the fifth path.

Problem 4 - White To Play

20161231 - Problem 4.jpg
rn1k1r2/pp2R3/2pP1pqp/6p1/2BQ4/2P1B3/PP4P1/6K1 w - - 0 1

1. Qb6+! axb6

Pretty much forced. Black has no place to run: 1...Kc8 2.Qc7#

2.Bxb6+ Kc8

Again, forced.

3.Rc7+ Kd8
4.Rf7+ Kc8
5.Rxf8+ Qe8

Not 5...Kd7 6.Rd8# But blocking with the queen only delays the inevitable.

6.Rxe8+ Kd7
7.Rd8# 1-0

Endgame of the Week

20161231 - Endgame.jpg
8/2k2K2/4PB2/8/1b6/8/8/8 w - - 0 1

So, the best hope for Black is a draw. If he can somehow snap up that pawn, that's a draw. As a matter of fact, he doesn't even have to win the pawn outright. He can also swap his bishop for the pawn, and that's good enough for a draw.

But, can he do it?

Answer: no, he can't. White is well aware of this strategy, and is able to circumvent it.

1.Be7

White wants to force the black bishop away from the e7 square so he can advance the pawn.
Be1

1...Ba3 (or Bd2 are Bd1 the same)

2.Bd8+!

White has now cleared the way for the pawn to advance. His bishop is expendable.

2...Kxd8
3.e7+ Kd7
4. e8=Q

And the material advantage is enough for White to win.

Zombie Problem

20161231 - zombie problem.jpg
1k6/1p1q4/1Pp5/p1Pp4/P2Pp1p1/2R1PpPp/2K2P1P/8 w - - 0 1

Black has a clear and ostensibly deadly plan: ... Kb8-c8-d8, followed by the lethal maneuver ... Qc8-a8-a6-f1. But White has an incredible way to set up a fortress:

1.Kd2 Kc8
2.Rc1 Kd8
3.Rh1!!

The point: White banishes his rook to the corner to be "stalemated".

3...Qc8
4.Ke1 Qa8
5.Kf1 Qa6+
6.Kg1

An unbelievable position: Black’s queen cannot stay on the a6-f1 diagonal due to stalemate, but there are no other ways to penetrate.

See you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

26 Hah! I have actual chess content for once.

I just watched "Bobby Fischer Against The World" with No. 1 Son this week. Quite a good documentary and all full of nostalgia if, like me, you were around 12 at the time of the Spassky match.

The problem, though, is the need to rely on observers' accounts of how matches went.

I can watch old boxing matches and see exactly how they went. I've seen pretty much all of them. If it's a Tyson fight I've seen it at least twice, if Ali at least five. And I can tell when my opinion of what happened is different from what the announcers think.

I can't tell that about chess matches, even if they showed all the moves (which they don't). "This match was fluid. This match was brutally aggressive. This match was restrained and elegant. This opening gambit was startling".

It's like having music described to you without being able to hear it.

33 Why is the zombie problem difficult?

None of the pawns can move and the rook cannot take any. Both the kings are trapped on their side of the pawns. There is no obvious stalemate.

So black needs to get his king out of the way (to d and then to get his queen to a6 from which there are 3 squares protected by pawns: c4, d3, e2 and the rook can only guard any two of them. So the black queen can penetrate the white position.

Now white must guard the pawns on a4 and f2 or the black queen can take one of them and then force white to exchange the rook for the passed pawn ...

Can't see any further than that.

There is no stalemate if Q-c4 then Qxa4 ... I think.

Also, if the rook is on h1 then the Q can move to c4, d3, e2 with check.

I think the stalemate idea is possibly correct but I can't see a way to force one.

Posted by: Off the reservation at December 31, 2016 06:17 PM (uqnYW)

81 PROBLEM ONE:

1. Bxd7

if 1... Rxd7 then 2. Qxb8 and Black is in a world of hurt.

if 1... Qxd7 then 2. Rc7 pins the Queen. If Black just gives up with 2...Qxc7 then 3. Qxc7+ wins the other rook.

PROBLEM TWO:

1... Rxh4

Threatening 2... Qh2#. White's only solution to that is 2. Nxe5 but then 2... Ng3#.

I'm not good enough to get the rest.

88 The white king has to be at G1 or F1 before the black queen gets to A6. Then any move the black queen makes along that diagonal results in stalemate or a material loss when black loses her queen

Posted by: Jean at December 31, 2016 06:23 PM (2RVmA)

89 Posted by: Jean at December 31, 2016 06:18 PM (2RVmA)

That works if white can get there in 5 moves ... which he can as long as it is his move (OM did not say). It takes black 5 or 6 moves to get to a6 so let's see:

1 K-d2 K-c8
2 R-c1 K-d8
3 R-h1 Q-c8
4 K-e1 Q-a8
5 K-f1 Q-a6+
6 K-g1 Q-a8 to avoid stalemate

Draw by repetition.

So it works.

Zombie Problem

What is the best line of play for White? This is a tough problem for zombie, our resident master. Let's see what he can do with it. I'll post the solution with the others in an hour or two, even though I don't understand it well enough to comment on it.

Holy cow! A problem for me. And I just swung by to look at the headlines.

In this case, the pawns are all locked up so that it seems on the surface that neither side can do anything. Kings can't get through. And neither can the queen or rook.

However, if white does something really really stupid, like tie up his king + R in the most awkward way possible, then maybe black could play eventually Qh4!! saccing itself to force the creation of a passed pawn, which would then queen, but be BEHIND the pawn chain, and thus eat everything up and win.

BUT...white need not allow this. All he has to do is put his rook on the back rank and that Q-sac would never work.

HOWEVER, I just noticed that black DOES have a way to break through, though it takes many moves -- get his out of the way to, like, e7, then play Qc8 - a8 - a6! and suddenly he's emerged into white's position.

So how can that be stopped?

Well, the only possible way, it seems, is to sac the rook on b5, at the premise correct moment, and maybe the K + Ps can create a blockage at the ppint and keep the black Q out.

But it seems pretty unlikely. White's king does not have triangulation space, and black has all the tempo-losers he needs with his own king.

So if we visualize many moves int he future some kind of position with the black Q on c8, and white goes 1. Rb5 Pxb5 2. Pxb5 Qa8 3. Ka4! -- but it doesn't work! Becuase blakc then makes a random king move, and white's king must retreat, after which black plays a4 and busts through.

So my cursory analysis is: white loses! Ugh!

But I do not have time to look deeper than that!

106 Endgame.

There seems to be a win for white by playing B-e7 so black must not take the bishop and must try to keep forcing white to block his own pawn.

But the zombie problem did me in.

114 I figurted it out!

takes six move for the black Q to get to a6. So.....

1. Kd2!! Kc8
2. Rc1! Kd8
3. Rh1!! Qc8
4. Ke1! Qa8
5. Kf1!! Qa6+
6. Kg1!!!!!

And the only way for black to NOT stalemate white is to retreat to a8 -- and then white draws by shuffling king from f1 and g1.

The only only conceivable move is then 6. ... Qb5?? and then white does have a legal move - -to take the queen
7. PxQ a4
8. Kf1 a3
9. Ke1 a2
10. Kd2!!! and wins!!!!

So it is a draw, since black wouldn't do that!

Read Diana's biography. If even half of it is true, the family she married into is really dysfunctional. Scary dysfunctional.

She also had her own emotional problems that were made worse by the situation; those were never addressed. So I certainly can't call her a slut, and from a genetic standpoint, if Charles is not the father, Harry might be better off.

The attacker shot a police officer and a civilian as he entered the club in the Ortakoy district of Istanbul before opening fire inside the building, Sahin said, in what he described as a terrorist attack.

There are many men in London, you know, who, some from shyness, some from misanthropy, have no wish for the company of their fellows. Yet they are not averse to comfortable chairs and the latest periodicals. It is for the convenience of these that the Diogenes Club was started, and it now contains the most unsociable and unclubbable men in town. No member is permitted to take the least notice of any other one. Save in the Stranger's Room, no talking is, under any circumstances, allowed, and three offences, if brought to the notice of the committee, render the talker liable to expulsion. My brother was one of the founders, and I have myself found it a very soothing atmosphere.

seventies. On second thought, don't assure them."

That's a dicey question in that part of the world. I was once in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

It has to be called that, because the Greeks think that if it's just Macedonia then their northern province of Macedonia will think it gets to be a country.

While I was there I was reliably informed by natives that (i) Phillip of Macedon and his son Alexander the Great were Yugoslav Macedonians, (2) that Phillip and Alexander were Greek Macedonians, (c) that Macedonian is a dialect of Bulgarian and that Macedonia is rightfully a Bulgarian province and that Phillip and Alexander were Bulgarians.

My husband and I were moderate eaters and didn't drink. The bill for the four of us came to almost $700. When the waitress asked how we wanted to handle the check, the other husband said "we'll just split it."

As in "interesting times". We'll be lucky if Obozo and Captain Ketchup don't have us in a two-front war with Russia and China before Jan. 20.

478 This is the reason Ohio state lost to michigan state last year. Letting Barret do everything and refusing to give it to their running back that can actually take it up the middle.

479 467 2016 sucked. So did 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012,
2011, and 2010. 1979-1991 also sucked. Come to think of it, so did 1992-1998, 2000-2002, 2004, and 2006-2009.
Posted by: Insomniac at December 31, 2016 09:27 PM (0mRoj)

Nah, 1992, 1999, and 2000 didn't suck.

480 I am only marginally interested in chess, so I don't engage to much with the weekly chess thread, but for some reason I was thinking of the chess-themed Columbo episode "The Most Dangerous Match" (Season 2, Episode 7, 1973).

From the imdb description:

"Emmett Clayton has a nightmare before an important chess match: he and his opponent are chess pieces on a giant, fog-covered chess board. Clearly he's worried about his match with Tomlin Dudek, a kindly old fat Russian. Later, the two meet, not coincidentally, in a French restaurant, where they begin using the salt and pepper shakers and other objects on the table as chess pieces. The game continues in Clayton's apartment - secretly, because both Dudek's doctor and his coach would throw fits if they knew the diabetic Russian was out late, eating rich foods with his opponent. Clayton loses the impromptu game and has a nervous fit, from which Dudek tries to calm him down. The next day, Clayton decides he must murder Dudek before the match. He concocts a scheme that makes it look as if Dudek had met with an untimely accident in the hotel's trash compactor, but our rumpled and seemingly disorganized Lt. Columbo is on the case."

Clayton, the American murderer, is portrayed as brilliant, but mentally imbalanced, as something of a Bobby Fischer-type. The Russian he kills is a fat, jolly type.

Anyway, it's on Netflix along with the rest of the series
