Last week I cleared out the browser tabs, tonight it's the pictures folder. Everytime I see something that might work for an ONT, on Twitter, Imgur, Tumblr or wherever, I save it to a folder. Well, that folder's full, so tonight I'm going to empty it. How does that strike everyone? Troll Level: Master Tonight's ONT brought to you by The Master Race: The Yahoo Group needs more salt. College Demands Respect for Communism
A purportedly "Christian" college, Samford University, has refused to recognize a chapter of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF). Why? Because YAF's founding document, the Sharon Statement, denounces communism. Obviously, on the modern college campus, this is #ThoughtCrime of the highest order. Hey everybody.
This was posted today by my FB friend, Dave Dix. Told him I'm sharing it here. --- Dave Dix 3 hrs #UnpopularOpinions 1. Lunch should be eaten just after 11am 2. Shoes should have pockets 3. Portland is the capital of Oregon 4. Most non-fiction books should be articles, and most non-fiction articles should be tweets. 5. In general, smoke-filled rooms, backroom deals, and party machines produce better practical results than direct democracy 6. Anchovies and olives are wonderful to eat 7. Siracha is a terrible "hot" sauce. 8. Lincoln was one of our worst presidents 9. Huey Lewis and the News is radically underrated. Imma let you finish, but 'I Want a New Drug' has one of the best guitar solos of all time. Of all time! (The 4:46 version of the song, not the radio 3:32 version) 10. The Scottish Enlightenment is more important than the French Enlightenment 11. Wal-Mart deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for doing more than anyone else to eliminate poverty 12. The South isn't nearly as racist or backward as most people think, and places like New York and California are way more so than anybody cares to admit. 13. Self-styled progressives usually hold regressive positions. 14. People skills are underrated 15. Not only is the Electoral College a good thing, but senators should still be chosen by the state legislature, and the voting age should be 21 16. SRV played Hendrix better than Hendrix. 17. Led Zeppelin was the best rock band ever 18. Teaching suffers more from too much compassion than too little; and students, if pressed, will admit that's true 19. MOOCs or their replacement will threaten at least one major established college or university over the next twenty years. 20. Most education and credentialing operates as a form of virtue signaling. --- I added my Unpopular Opinion: women should start wearing hosiery again!! Waiting a week for your new 6T drive to back up all your stuff. Well, most of it. You know what's not great? Doing the Greater Good, and donating your 6T drive so that a business can recover from a CryptoLocker virus. You know what's kind of great? Probably true. Stevie Ray recorded the definitive versions of several Hendrix songs. Hendrix was the better songwriter though. I was blessed enough to see Stevie Ray a number of times in college before he hit it big. Stupid me never bothered to try and talk with him. Friends who knew him or met him describe him as a little bit shy and very polite -- it was always "yes, ma'am" and "yes, sir" with him. If I had time to do the math, I would figure out how many of the states the FAB won could have been flipped to trump by subtracting from her margin of victory in CA, NY, and MA. I'm willing to bet she could have won those three states alone and still eked out a popular vote win. In other words could trump have added enough votes +1 in all of the sates the FAB won save those three and still lost the popular vote? Powerful illustration of why we need the EC.

rickl, I've been using self-checkout too. BUT...
California gubmint strikes again!! You can't get free plastic bags at the market anymore, you *have* to buy thicker ones, or paper bags. And the supermarkets don't trust the customers to add on the cost I guess, so right now if you go up to a self-checkout lane in California? NO BAGS available there, you have to have either brought your own or go without. I *do* like that most stores have a big ol' sign right there, explaining why the bags have disappeared. VERY annoying. Going to have to get used to bringing in a bag or two at the market, I guess. Posted by: qdpsteve at December 21, 2016 11:15 PM (u8kLQ) 195

I think the SJW wet dream is a society where people have no concept of gender. You wear whatever clothes you want to wear, have sex with whoever you want, however you want and sometimes, for reasons unexplainable, when certain people have sex, one of them has a baby. Weird.

What if they went full retard -- they're kind of already there with all these Hillary excuses-- but what if they started identifying themselves as the party of the freaks and mentally disabled? A million dollars in $100 bills makes a nice little pile. It would fit in a suitcase. $100M fills a standard pallet, It would come up about chest high. Google varies visualizations. One billion is thus 10 pallets.
One trillion dollars is thus 10 thousand pallets. Here, you compare that to a football field, and a 747 and all that. Fun fact: If you laid out the national debt in $1 bills, end to end, you would reach Uranus. And deeper, now, since that was back when the total debt first exceeded GDP at $15T or so. I think the SJW wet dream is a society where people have no concept of gender. You wear whatever clothes you want to wear, have sex with whoever you want, however you want and sometimes, for reasons unexplainable, when certain people have sex, one of them has a baby. That's the way things used to work. Then someone went and screwed things up by inventing civilization. Posted by: Anachronda at December 22, 2016 12:06 AM (Oi5b2) 321

Reason, based on how easily Replicants kill humans, the fact that Deckard survived Zhora's & Leon's very physical attacks meant that he had something going for him... I felt that if he was, it cheapened the whole thing. Rachel's picture of her mother & Leon's photo's vs. the photos on Decked piano. Today? You know the script for BR 2049 has been written by people trying to "approximate Dick's voice." Of my favorite stories about Prince Archie Bunker Philip was when he met Cate Blanchett in 2008 at some shindig thing where celebrities meet the royals. He asked her how to hook up his DVD player.
Back in the old days, actors and performers were considered very low class by the nobility. You may remember from Downton Abbey where some considered it scandalous for Lord Grantham to allow some famous singer to stay upstairs. She should have been put down in with the servants. Well, Prince Philip is from that era, really. He thought Cate would know how to hook up a DVD player because she's was from the "film industry". I mean, that's what they do, isn't it, he thought. And one time, when he and the Queen were in Australia, they met with some Aboriginal leaders. He asked one if they still "chucked spears at one another?" Posted by: Infidel -------------- Yes, backhoe. He always referred to his much-missed wife as "Miss Emily". I think he lived at Sea Island, GA. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at December 22, 2016 01:01 AM (ZO497) 387
One thing I've read about Phillip K. Dick, is that he personally had serious issues with both schizophrenia and paranoia.
He was thankfully just functional enough to keep himself out of state mental hospitals, but I've heard that if you met him in person, you could tell he was a bit "touched in the head." And he was smart and talented enough to use his issues (which he was aware of, and I believe sought treatment for) to fuel ideas his writing. otho, we will see.
My hunch is that if Blade Runner 2049 turns out to be unworthy, it'll pretty much be the end of critics taking Ridley Scott seriously as a director or producer anymore. Sounds unthinkable, but then again look how much George Lucas' stock has gone down since he went crazy and insisted (still insists) it's his right to keep revising the original Star Wars films forever. Posted by: qdpsteve at December 22, 2016 12:46 AM Yeah, a comparison to Lucas is not unjustified. Ridley Scott needs a massive kick in the bum to that might get him to pull his finger out and make something truly great again. TBH, I'd feel a hell of a lot more confident about the BR sequel if it was given to Fincher. That dude has been kicking Scott's ass for decades. Posted by: otho at December 22, 2016 01:01 AM (lmIoG) 389
otho, oh yeah. Fincher would be great.
The studio probably should have insisted Scott give it to him, but I'd bet Scott wants to be seen as the "author" of this new sequel and didn't want to hire a name director that could eclipse his own name/fame. Posted by: qdpsteve at December 22, 2016 01:03 AM (u8kLQ) 390
/Rant On
Ever since I had to give up caffeine, I drink decaf coffee very infrequently, but don't mind as much decaf tea. There is one particular brand and one particular flavor of yogurt I buy for daily consumption, Dannon Coffee Yogurt. Of all the coffee/cappuccino yogurt brands I've tried, Dannon Coffee is the best. A container is my daily cup of coffee. So I was out shopping and saw the store had them as the coffee yogurt seems to have a shorter shelf life. Not wanting to hunt later as the coffee yogurt can be elusive to hunt, I picked up 8 containers. I noticed new packaging. I also noticed the weight: 5.3 oz. That's just over 10% down from the current 6 oz. Prior to that, the 8 oz. waxed carton was reduced 25%. So a 36% reduction in container size in just over a decade or so. Talk about hidden inflation! A 5.3 oz. container of yogurt? What's next? Dannon Coffee Yogurt Mini-Bites? Bastards. "So from the Dannon Family to yours, Happy Fucking New Year, Suckers!" /{Mumble Mumble} Posted by: RickZ at December 22, 2016 01:04 AM (dQLTf) 391
28 years ago today, as in December 21st, 270 innocent people perished when Pan Am 103 blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland. 11 of them were on the ground. The perp was a Libyan agent who stayed in a Scottish prison until they released him on "compassionate" grounds due to terminal illness. Funny, since none of his victims got compassion.

SMFH, that's a pretty amazing wipe-out video, but some of the older ones from Waimea Bay were "worse" - I mean, even larger waves - if I recall correctly.
There's a big wave competition (maybe the world championship?) held in Todos Santos, near Ensenada in Baja. And just west of San Clemente Island (oh, to get at the abalone surely infesting that place, which is a closed guvamint reservation) there is the Cortes Bank, which breaks occasionally - and only yuuuugely. A little surf film called "Step Into Liquid" from 2004, I think, ends with the then-top surfers rushing out to surf Cortes Bank. Waves are measured from the back side, not the face, so sometimes it will seem the numbers are low-balled, when the surf is just 2-5 feet (the faces look much higher). And when you're in the water, even a 3-4 foot wave looks impressive from just in front of it. Posted by: rhomboid at December 22, 2016 01:17 AM (QDnY+) 403

Posted by: Adriane the Grockery Store Inflation Monitoring Critic ... at December 22, 2016 01:06 AM (AoK0a) The funny thing is when they keep trying to push inflation -- over and over and over and over -- until they've got overwhelming piles of stuff in the back room.....and then they mark it down to an un-inflated price and it sells out. They've been trying to push $6.50 a 12 pack of cans of Coke lately -- but they sit on the shelves, so they go with "buy two get one free" and it sells, then they try to get back to $6.50 and nobody bites. They do $6.50 BOGO and it's popular, then they go to $6.50 and nobody bites. They've got so many stacked up, they just went to "Four for $11" and I bought 12 12-packs -- lots of luck having me buy one at $6.50 any time soon. And it's like that for everything. My "strike price" for shredded cheese is $2.50 -- I see 'em on the pegs at $3.99 and I'm thinking, "who are they trying to fool?" They keep trying to cram top sirloin up to $8.99/lb -- what are they smoking? They want me to believe that $18.99 for a 12-pack of regular non-megabrewer beer is normal.....errr..... We seem to have significant ability to overproduce, while pricing is all about betting on busted flushes. Admittedly, someone seems to be paying full price for this stuff -- but who? Unless I'm misremembering, that mess ended up involving really shocking and despicable pay-to-play elements from the UK to Qaddhafi (oil biz). Hope I'm imagining that dark aspect. Regardless, the whole idea of "compassionate" releases of vile murderers from prison is idiotic. cthulhu, what you're describing with your soda example is more an issue of marketing/pricing. They haven't shrunk the 12 oz. cans . . . yet (like they did a while ago with broth cans from 16 oz. to 14.5 oz.).
But what I'm seeing all over the place is the hidden inflation, where a product decreases in size with the price (temporarily) remaining the same. It is literally everywhere in the grocery store. Couple reduced size with eventual price increases and you have a stark hidden inflationary hit. That's why my lying eyes are why I don't believe the inflation numbers nor the eggspurts. The last 8 years the inflation numbers, like every other number put out by the finally out-going Administration, are based firmly and diligently in FantasyLand. If there was any time to bomb Libya it was to bomb the Tripoli airport when Al Megrahi landed - which should have happened - but, of course, Barky was in on letting the scumbag loose - which was yet one more impeachable offense that Barky was allowed to just skate free on. They never said that Barky was involved, of course, but you can bet your bottom dollar that the Brits and the Scots wouldn't let the guy they jailed for Pan Am 103 go without asking Washington about it. AFP = adobe flash player, I believe.
Posted by: Chi at December 22, 2016 03:56 AM (UWLAq) Makes sense. That was my second guess. I friggin hate adobe. One of the worst companies on Earth - which is pretty impressive these days. I hate flash files and I despise pdfs. I think more people have problems with flashes than anything else ... and the stupid adobe player was such a rich target for hacking, too. If I could I would make the world's largest virtual bonfire of flash files and pdfs ... and throw in everyone who helped establish those standards. AFP is Adobe Flash Player.
Everything was fine until that update. Gifs played fine, youtubes would show up, no problems. I uninstalled it. Thinking its just time to format the hard drive and start over. Posted by: Tim in Illinois at December 22, 2016 04:15 AM (d76uN) 464

Good morning.
Well, when the temps go from "Brass Monkey Warning" to more normal temps, the house actually feels warm. So now I can complain about the 1 to 3 inches of snow for tomorrow. I get together with a couple of old work buddies for an annual Christmas party. Alcohol is involved. With snow coming, not so much. I'm hoping the weather gurus are wrong one more time. Tim, for the first seven years I was online I did not run an anti-virus program. My solution to a virus was "Format C".

Aha! You're vertical. Very good.
The only drawback to formatting was that I had to save everything to disk first. Still, it was the one sure way to get rid of the nasties. Posted by: creeper, lost in the Witopia web at December 22, 2016 05:57 AM (voYu7) 477

I used to reformat my hard drive and reload about every two or three years. It helped to sped things up and cleanup old rot. But it usaully took me days to get everything working right again, and months to find other wrinkles that needed fixing.
I haven't done it now in a long time because Microsnot no longer supports XP and I am leery of scratch reload. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at December 22, 2016 06:25 AM (mpXpK) 484

Vic as far as I know, you can still get all the service packs and updates for XP. Just not any support for them. You have to rely on third party people if you want/need help. Posted by: Tim in Illinois at December 22, 2016 06:30 AM (d76uN) 486
So I get in the car this morning turn on the radio, scan and stop on some Christmas music. Within three second I say to myself "This is NPR. Ack!" And I was right. What do they do to their broadcasts to give them that NPR sound, no matter if it is Christmas music, an interview or even clips of a riot? I swear even moment of silence between segments have that quality to them.
Have they figured out how to broadcast smugness? Posted by: Ripley at December 22, 2016 06:30 AM (1BQGO) 487

In the accident assessment buisness the following hold true:
RISK = PROBABILITY X CONSEQUENCES So the probability of a complete scratch reload failing is in some manner may be low but the consequences are high. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at December 22, 2016 06:36 AM (mpXpK) 491

Did anyone see the video of the older woman in JC Penney going off on two other latino women (?) in line? Guess they are going to ban her from the mall and Penney's is trying to find the two women to refund them or something for the verbal attack on them....this woman is getting publicly stoned on FB etc...and of course, as comments on this online show, this is due to Trump getting elected and people are "now" embolden" to act out in this type of racist behaviour...
