Reminds me of the time I dragged my hubby to Circ du Soleil many, MANY years ago because a friend had two spare tickets. Told him it was acrobats, because that's what I thought it was. Lights go out, spotlight goes on --- onto a freaky-looking clown. Angry voice beside me: "I was TOLD there would be NO CLOWNS!" Apparently hubby's one of those clown-a-phobics. Still not forgiven .

I know I've told this story before, but here goes anyway:
Picasso was once approached by a friend holding a few of the artist's sketches. The friend asked if Picasso wouldn't mind just putting his name and the date on the back of each before he had them framed for his house. Picasso, of course, was no fool and knew that the "friend" was only going to sell the sketches. So he shook his head "no." "Those are fakes." "No, they're not!" the friend protested. "I saw you draw these with my own eyes!" Picasso shrugged. "I can draw fake Picassos just as well as anybody else." Picasso is one of those artists who is acclaimed by almost everyone (like I care about their opinion) but usually leaves me 'meh'. Some of his more angular abstracts stuff may be interesting to look at but there is a huge "so what" factor. If this is a failing on my part, I can live with that.

Picasso is a great example of "no your 2 year old couldn't do that." He painted Seated Harlequin in 1901. Here are several works he painted prior to that.
http://tinyurl.com/hlugrox The earlier works show MORE technical expertise and are classically representational where Seated Harlequin is obviously not worried about representation. He's enhanced color, reduced depth of field to nothing, and so on. Why? The more interesting the answer, the better the art. Posted by: mx4 at December 21, 2016 09:52 AM (OrlQY) 42

Hi Grammie, I am interested in learning to draw and paint with watercolors as a hobby. Unfortunately, I have no particular talent for it but the learning and practice are fun. (Helps that no one else has to see any of my attempts.) That's why I enjoy CBD's art threads. If I can't do the art, at least I can appreciate what goes into it. My grandmother was a gifted artist, and was fairly successful at selling her works. My mom can draw anything you ask for. Myself, I used to paint, and sold some pieces in New York city, but the arthritis has zapped that all away. I wish I could still paint, now that the kids are long grown and I have a lot of time. But I'm doing good if I can hold a pen long enough to sign a check. It is what it is.

Picasso has some great pieces and I really like this one. His "large fingers" style of paining hands is a little distracting though, and he's fully capable of more delicate work (just look at some of his charcoal drawings or even his earlier painting). I'm no art aficionado (meaning, I don't know shit about it) and I'd love to learn why he chooses to represent hands the way he does.

I believe this is transitional art for Picasso, he is starting to buck the confines of representational figurative art, on his journey to abstract and cubist forms. I've seen early still lifes by Monet, very realistic, but I instantly ID'd as Monet.

I have to say.. I did not like Picasso until I went to Madrid and the Reina Museum.. Picasso did and could paint classically. He was what we would call good. When you can see the progression and see the way he was breaking down the "abstract elements" and trying to make a commentary on the way modern life was changing via war and fascism it begins to make some sense. When I saw a large exposition at the Guggenheim of his work it was arranged some what by date and it became clearer. I respected his work much more after that..

This does raise a question: why was it that turn of the century highbrow types were so incredibly fucking obsessed with Pierrot, Harlequin, etc. etc. classic clown and mime stuff? I mean, it's creeps into everything. Sayers and Wodehouse both have Pierrot shit being a HUGE thing at masquerade parties and the like, as two examples. Also, I was just rereading The King in Yellow and it's positively dripping with clown juices.

Best Steakhouse in Lake Charles, LA at one time was called Harlequin Steakhouse.
There used to be a national chain called York Steak House. Nothing fancy - actually a cafeteria-style restaurant. But they mixed their steak burgers with some flavoring that I've never tasted anywhere else and still, 30-odd years later, still has me salivating at the memory of it. Must have been Soylent Green. As far as I'm concerned, the worst suburb of Milwaukee has to be Shorewood. Not because it's ugly - on the contrary, it's pretty and full of wealthy and upper middle class people, but because it is as smugly liberal as Madison. I remember when Justice Renquist was still alive and was invited to give the commencement address at his alma mater, Shorewood HS - and then the parents, teachers and students had the school disinvite him because he was conservative. Yeah, he's the only Supreme Court Justice Shorewood has ever produced, and it's most illustrious native son, but god forbid the snowflakes honor a conservative and hear opinions they might disagree with. I get my hair cut at a salon there and I heard one of the patrons said she threw up when they called the election for Trump. And she's "so ashamed" that she lives in a red state now. Great NRO piece on Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and their "more illegal than a bar exam hypothetical" hiring procedure ...
White men over 40 received the opposite treatment. One attorney's resume was so spectacular that interviewers struggled to come up with plausible excuses to reject him. Finally, someone blurted out, "For the love of God, don't hire him!" Cordray, who always spoke last, had no choice. I like him, but then I've seen his art in person, which helps any artist be more impressive. He managed to reinvent himself many times; I like his early stuff like his blue period, and the cubism. I saw an exhibit of later sculptures from when he was old and I was struck by how whimsical and creative they were, the way they played with positive/negative space. He manages to stay a genius of composition, form and shape till the end, which not all artists can muster. He was an absolute bastard though, really terrible. Not a nice person. His granddaughter Marina wrote a really eye opening book about him, a really fascinating read. His daughter Paloma designs jewelry for Tiffanys, really beautiful stuff. It boiled down to agreeing that Hillary won Cali big, and Trump won his base states equally big which essentially brought the two to a tie in the popular vote and in the EC. In Cohn's view, the story of the election wasn't California or Trump's nine smaller base states. Trump then won squeekers in nearly every single tossup state, yielding him the EC win and the Presidency, while Hillz went on to wrack up useless vote margins in Democrat base states. Trump won where it counted and Hillary lost every tossup except New Hampshire. She should have spent a little campaign time in Michigan. Posted by: MTF at December 21, 2016 11:21 AM (X4ZNp) 411

I looked it up. The book my Marina is titled "Picasso: My Grandfather." Not a very exciting title but the revelations inside were pretty explosive. A sample from a NYT Review:
Yet until the recent publication of Marina Picasso's ''Picasso: My Grandfather'' (Riverhead), none of his descendants had ever turned against his memory. All have in one way or another benefited from carrying his name and inheriting his works. All seemed resigned to living under the shadow of a man who, in death as in life, remained the all-powerful Picasso. Now in a sense his only granddaughter has broken free. ''His brilliant oeuvre demanded human sacrifices,'' she writes. ''He drove everyone who got near him to despair and engulfed them. No one in my family ever managed to escape from the stranglehold of this genius. He needed blood to sign each of his paintings: my father's blood, my brother's, my mother's, my grandmother's and mine. He needed the blood of those who loved him -- people who thought they loved a human being, whereas they really loved Picasso.'' More so.... on a ship its important to know instantly who does what job...
So identifying them in your mind by JOB, not just rank... becomes critical in an emergency situation... Like... we're up at the bottom of the mast as a Radar Antenna is about to shear its bolts and fall to the deck... You need to be listening to the BM1 and the ET1... not the Chief who is a Radio operator... Because their authority stems from their expertise in their jobs, which then trumps Rank.... That does not surprise me at all. Marina also wrote this about Picasso and his relationship with women: ''He submitted them to his animal sexuality, tamed them, bewitched them, ingested them and crushed them onto his canvas,'' she writes. ''After he had spent many nights extracting their essence, once they were bled dry, he would dispose of them.'' Today, Ms. Picasso said, she recognizes that genius always extracts a high price from those around it. ''Either people are strong enough to walk away, or they crystallize around the genius and suffer one or two generations of destruction,'' she said. ''It's what happened to us. When I was a child I could not see that. Today, in the same situation, if I were strong enough, I would run away." Posted by: LizLem at December 21, 2016 11:48 AM (hvf9s) 510

I'm not sure that's always true, although it's true of some geniuses. Did Bach wreck the lives of those around him? Or Rembrandt and Rubens? I suppose I'm going to get willowed.
I love White Christmas. But if it were made today? First of all, there would be no Haynes sisters. It would be a brother and sister. Why, you ask? Because the real reason Phil Davis partners with Bob Wallace is because he is in love with him. So, of course, at the end of the movie, while Bob gets Judy, Phil gets the hunky, fabulous Haynes brother. General Waverly? Well, he'll be a psyche-scarred veteran of the Gulf. And he didn't retire - no, he was kicked out of the army, either because he refused to cover up for his troops raping poor Iraqi women or he refused to go along with Chimpy BusHitler's lies about WMD in Iraq. His housekeeper? No longer the feisty, white Mary Wickes - no, no, she's a big, brassy, ghetto-speaking momma there to bring old racist white people to their senses with her salt-of-the-earth wisdom. And the general's granddaughter? A snotty, wise-beyond-her-years SJW who hates Christmas because of its white privilege and who, while she may be reconciled with the holiday by the end of the movie, will be shown to be the only person with any sense among the whole group. There is a story of a Canadian man and his American wife who are being held by some Taliban gang that specializes in capturing hostages. They were..get this...hiking in Afghanistan in 2012 when they were captured. She was seven months pregnant at the time. She now has another child and calls the two her "surviving" children. She says she has been "defiled" in front of both of them. Hubby is sitting there holding kids next to her in the latest video from their captures. Why Does Tunisia Produce So Many Terrorists? The experts have long since determined that Tunisia is a disproportionate source of recruits for radical Islamist causes. Despite the country's relatively small population of 11 million, Tunisians are conspicuously over-represented among the fighters of the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. According to recent estimates, 7,000 Tunisians have joined the cause - more than any other country, including much larger ones such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt. http://tinyurl.com/jaqqpp4 Posted by: RWC-Team BOHICA at December 21, 2016 12:13 PM (2x9LM) 612

Why I say it was a smart move is that she was going to lose those states no matter how much time and money she spent there.
Given the option of losing the EC and the popular vote compared to losing the EC but winning the popular vote. The latter is probably preferable - even though the result is the exact same. Posted by: SH at December 21, 2016 11:41 AM (gmeXX) It would have been a smart move if she had won. As it was, she thought she was winning and didn't need to go to those places to campaign. She was using flawed information gathering techniques, staff who wouldn't contradict her because of the hurt she would bring on them, and probably planted disinformation - possibly her own campaign's disinformation. Trump also managed to wind beyond the margin of fraud. She was a terrible candidate, didn't know what she was doing, and wouldn't listen to experts who tried to tell her she was wrong. No amount of CYA is going to change that, and as they say in the recovery field, the only thing you can do about the past is learn from it or lie about it: if you are too busy trying to find someone to fix the blame about it you ain't learning, are you? John Wick has the making of a cult classic.
I always liked the fact that the stakes, a dog and a car, were lower than even one life. But the reason was clear anyway. Posted by: BourbonChicken at December 21, 2016 12:31 PM (VdICR) Posted by: Moron Pundit at December 21, 2016 12:32 PM (xeeHA) 671

444 Speaking of anime, Outlaw Star is an underrated classic.
Posted by: Independent George at December 21, 2016 11:29 AM (BDZWU) Yes. It had a fan-service episode that made sense plot-wise, the "harem" girls had no sexual interest in the protagonist (and pretty much vice versa), and the prison escape episode was pure sci-fi. I always wanted a sequel. Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Last Exile (the original) are other favorites of mine. I liked one called Broken Blade but it seemed as if it were cancelled mid-production and rushed to an ending. Cult classic movies? Breakfast Club (because teenagers still watch it!) Big Trouble in Little China (which others have mentioned) I think John Wick might be headed there. Posted by: NaughtyPine at December 21, 2016 12:43 PM (UwMHj) 673
