Good Songs Gone Bad.....

Courtesy of commenter Bluebell, below the fold is a profoundly odd but vastly amusing take on the Mondegreen. Instead of a mishearing of the lyrics, this lunatic ran the lyrics through Google Translate SDL Translate*, into various languages, then back into English.

And Open Thread...of course.

*Correction and "Neener neener" courtesy of Anon Y. Mous, who was, coincidentally, just banned.

[Just kidding. Thanks]

12 Sunday Morning Shows seemed to be of one voice over Russian Hacking.

Little discussion that Wikileaks wasn't the October surprise that Assange promised. Revelations that the DNC cheated Bernie. Revelations that Podesta and others saw the Foundation to be problematical. So, confirmations of what was already in the public domain.

Meanwhile someone leaked a private conversation that led to Pussygate. The NYT published illegally obtained Trump tax returns. And Miss Venezuelan hospitality. These stories had been co-ordinated in development for months. And probably led the Clintonistas into the false belief that they'd surely sink Trump in the lead up to the election.

Donna Brazile of all people was on one show. Recall that Wikileaks showed that she gave debate questions to the Clintons in violation of the sacred trust of journalists.

37 So from stuff I've seen over the weekend, apparently Disney brought someone in to 'fix' (rewrites and reshoots aplenty) Rogue One after the first trailer met with mixed results, which is why the final product doesn't much look like that first trailer, and frankly not much like the writers made it sound.

And I wonder how long it will take the SJW crowd to figure out they've been had.

I mean, I don't want to get too spoiler-y since it's good enough folks with any interest ought to see it unspoiled, but there's quite a bit of stuff in it that would have them screaming in any other context.

After looking at the Clinton Archipelago map, I went to my county website to look at the election results. My county as a whole went for Clinton, but my township went for Trump.

I dug down deeper and looked at the results by district. My township has 17 districts, 12 of which went for Trump and 5 for Clinton. (My own district went for Trump.) Some of the results were very close and some were lopsided one way or the other.

Now I'm really curious. I want to see a map of the 17 districts in my township. But I can't find it online. The county and township websites explain how to find out what district I'm in and the location of my polling place, but I already know that. I'd really like to see a map to learn more about my neighbors.

56 I think Team Orange is right in their apparent belief that they will have to GO AROUND the MSM to communicate with the public.

Playing the media game the way it's always been played is DOOM for Trump-- they'll define him in a heartbeat, as the third coming of Hitler (W being the second).

I marvel at all the lib journos who are now writing "What Trump must do now to (fill in the blank)" columns.

These people want Trump to go die in a fire, & the sum of all my fears is that Trump will try to "earn their respect" by being respectably conventional.

So far, not much sign he's "growing in office," happily-- although a few cautionary noises on global warming.

Based on confirmable information? Yes.

There's one GOP elector making an ass of himself about principles, and two Dem electors out of WA that said before the election they couldn't support her. The Harvard professor that was trying to talk up faithless electors maintained a caveat that the nameless people he represented were only jumping ship if there were enough to change the outcome and he admitted yesterday there won't be enough.

So that's likely three total faithless electors, and more fleeing Hillary. And the whole thing was little more than wishcasting by people who think the electoral process should be thrown out because it didn't give them the result they wanted.

98 Here's what to expect when going to a music show nowadays.

Went to the Ogden Theater in Denver last night to see a show. The Uber driver was blabbing about having gone there five or six days previous to see some hip-hop act, and the "artist" ruined the whole thing by beginning with a 25 minute monologue all about racial bullshit and social justice, and how we're all fucked now with a President that's NotOurPresident.

So we get into the show, the shitty opening act ends, and the main attraction comes on, introduced by the fucking governor (Hickenlooper, D-of-course-cause-this-is-Colorado), and through the haze of dope, we learn from this act, that we are all well and truly fucked because He'sNotOurPresident.

There is a long extended shaggy-dog story about how an American Sax player lost his way and his music, and after a time of playing worse and worse dives because he couldn't remember the bridges out of any song, wound up in England, in London, in a cheap upper story hotel room.
He looked out the window on a rainy day that was just breaking into clear sky and the last showers of rain and the sun was striking a glorious rainbow.

He pulled out his sax and began to play that wonderful song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"
"Somewhere over the rainbow,
Way up high.
There's a land that I've heard of,
Once in a lullaby.Somewhere over the rainbow,
Skies are blue.
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true."
And then he choked on the bridge, and in despair, he unhooked his sax sling tossed the instrument out the window and jumped after it.

And as he was dying on the pavement he heard the ambulance siren in the distance "do - be - do - be -do -be- do - be!"

Good movie and a prequel of sorts that works well.

No SJW-baloney floating throughout.

Good acting though the robot steals the show. I would've liked to see more of the no-feet guy. He seemed like an interesting character.

Occasionally, its video game origins seep through.

A bit slow in parts. Like a lot of Hollywood movies, it could stand to lose about 15 minutes.

Still, a good SW movie, I would place it after 4 and 5.

Either between 5-6 or just after 6.

Not sure about that.

I liked the Darth Vader is a complete badass moment near the end.

Check it out.

Should have used lawyers. You don't get attached to them, and there's some things you just can't get a chimp to do.

And on a completely different note, Palpatine, I spotted an old piece of photo gear at a junque shop near here. I think it might be a copying stand, or some sort of enlarger component. There is a lens, maybe 20 mm diameter, no sign of a shutter or diaphragm, mounted on a bellows, with the gears to rack it to and fro, all mounted on a machined green board. Back of bellows is open, and might be 4" by 5". Dude wants $40 for it.

I could go back and get further information, or even take a picture, if such a thing intrigues you.

174 167 159. Launching dogs was dropped, in part, because of the success of making the cosmonaut dogs celebrities. Russians like dogs, and it was awful to know that each of the hero-dogs was being sent to certain death. My theory, anyway. But, on the other hand, guess the reds couldn't get enough chimps.
Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at December 18, 2016 01:55 PM (ucuR0)

The Russians used dogs, and the Americans used monkeys and chimpanzees. Both countries used animals on various suborbital and orbital test flights before humans flew in space.

Both countries had successes and failures, and some of the animals were lost. But Laika was the only one that was deliberately sent on a one-way suicide mission, as far as I know. It was done for propaganda purposes, and at the time there was no way to recover a satellite.

179 Funny thing, the u.s. never released any proof that it was the Norks.

===

Hackers run their traffic through multiple proxies and compromised end point. They can't prove that it was the Norks without an examination of the point of origin server.

Imagine investigating and proving a burglary, where nothing was taken based on a single incident and a few minutes of grainy , dark video footage.

The DNC and RNC hackers were most likely over 5,000 miles away and hopped through 100 different anonymous proxy servers before breeching their systems. And they likely sent a spearphishing email first that downloaded malware into the system that sent intelligence and system information to the hackers in command, while they leisurely escalated their privileges and moved laterally through the system.

If that's what happened, then they should just say that. But they won't.

Because the whole "Russian Hacking" lie is a blunt instrument that was intended to be used to beat Americans into accepting the belief that the Dems crushing rejection by America was actually "Alien Enemies!" and not their own complete and abject failure.

-Jin's one moment of combat awesomeness only happens because the people she's fighting have no reason at all to expect her to attack them and occurs only to set up a male character to do something more awesome (this occurs very early in the film)

Jin isn't Buffy the Sith Slayer. Her casting makes sense in the same way female protagonists in horror movies do. She's fairly weak and small and The Monster outclasses her in every sense.

Though in this case she's accompanied by a sizeable bunch of men most of whom outshine her. And while the actors are multi-ethnic, it's not a huge deal. Black gun dude is Forrest Whitaker character's implied son (and the FW character was black in The Clone Wars). Asian martial arts dude, was you know, a martial arts dude. The other two were Portuguese and some flavor of hispanic, I'd guess Spaniard, but they seem pretty white to me.

I mean, maybe the casting people were making some commentary, but it doesn't come across as such in the movie.

Not sure if electors can flip the election, but I do think there's a widely-held belief that 37 faithless electors can prevent the election results from being certified thus preventing Donald Trump from being sworn in without an act of Congress settling the matter of certification.

239 You know what would really make our year?

If suddenly Trump received MORE electoral votes than his original 306.

Gad DAM would that make me laugh my ASS off.

On a sad note, it's is becoming alarmingly apparent that the left is now in full blown rage mode and will stop at nothing to get their way.

Suddenly the EC is some kind of "broken" system because anything the left doesn't like is Hitler. They claim the EC was designed to stop people like Trump all the while supporting an all but convicted criminal with bodies floating all around her. The EC would have been completely in their right to prevent a known DANGER to our nation (explicitly defined by the height of the flames in the middle east, and the said dead people that are numerous in her criminal orbit).

These people are dangerously unhinged. Look at the death threats Trump and his family have received. Look at the death threats the Electors themselves have received. They very people that claim Trump will bring racial unrest are the ones dragging whitey out of his car, beating the shit out of him, and stealing the poor bastards car.

Now, I ask you folks as an extremely concerned individual after having witnessed the complete lunacy of Bush Derangement Syndrome(TM), and then at least 8 solid years of complete and total racial propaganda from the emboldened media, whats to stop these crazies from actually killing people? The news media need to have a new qualifier for in order to remain an outlet. If ordinary citizens can't shout fire in a crowded theater without legal ramifications, why should these lying sack of SHIT be allowed to do the same on a national level or worse? Journalism should be the five W's: Who, What, Where, When, and Why. One doesn't need a fucking journalism class to follow those simple requirements. No more burying stories or lying by omission (their favorite). People's lives have been TAKEN because of the lies spread by our media and they need to be held LEGALLY accountable.

That doesn't contradict what I wrote, so I'm not sure why you're so impressed with yourself.

My point was the movie doesn't get that message across. So it doesn't matter what the casting people wanted to say. Further, the point I made way upthread is that Disney brought in some guy to fix the film with rewrites and reshoots after reaction to the first trailer. To the extent that half the stuff in the first trailer aren't in the movie.

Which is to say the casting people *and* the writers got overruled by someone who didn't think Disney's 4 billion dollar investment ought to be squandered on their petty agendas.

Trade Minister Tagomi seems able to pierce the veil and travel to our timeline, and in one amusing sequence he visits his alterna-home in California and opens the pantry to see weird and unfamiliar foods like peanut butter, canned soup, and ...Twinkies? He tackles the Twinkie with chopsticks with mixed results.

In one very effective scene he heads to a bookstore and espies banned literature like Lolita. He reads one of our histories of WWII, realizing to his horror that not only did the Allies win but it was Hiroshima and Nagasaki that got nuked, not Washington D.C.

Well, Hillary was implicitly threatening war with Russia by proposing to enforce a "no fly" zone in Syria, where Russian planes are operating in support of Assad. And, as far as they are concerned, she's a loose cannon.

Trump is more predictable. He'd prefer to make a deal than go to war. And he has less reason to want to meddle in areas that Russia regards as her sphere of influence.

I don't think the Russians did actively meddle in the election. And any information they might have released is information that should be public anyway, by law.

Hillary is first completely untrustworthy. they can't take her word on anything, leading to instability
second, she's a warmonger and had already fucked the middle east beyond recognition.
she was the candidate for a new world war. look at the disposition of troops by the Russians on the eve of the election. they were set to move, immediately, and to discourage response by our NATO partners. they had a small carrier group just past the straits of Gibraltar, masses of troops at Ukraine. others within their ambit were similarly in a ready state. events, i believe, would have been swift and pre emptive in nature.

Also his supporters love him and the left's efforts will just turn off average regular people. The only people that will be excited by their disgusting attacks and tactics are their unhinged looney base.

Also, it really should be like this where we have men and women that have been successful in the private sector who don't need govt jobs who are accepting them out of true service to help their country. Not lifetime losers like Graham and Jeb who can only live off the govt and do nothing else. 318 >> "why on earth would Putin/Russia aid Trump?"

My thing on this comes from one straightforward fact:

Putin's ability to project power (that is, short of chucking a nuke) depends primarily on the impact of energy prices on his economy, and secondarily on his ability to control the energy supply to his adversaries. He needs money, and he wants control. This is why Russian firms have been buying up Western European energy infrastructure, why they hire German politicians, etc.

So, given two candidates with historical Russian business ties, one whom he clearly dislikes personally, and one whom he's probably more personally comfortable with:

Do you prop up the one who you might be personally comfortable with, but whose policies are going to damage your economy and limit your ability to exert influence, or do you prop up the one who you personally dislike but whose enviroloony policies will boost your economy and whose seemingly random, ignorant, and cluelessly interventionist foreign policy initiatives at State left the world open for you to take?

The Russian thing strikes me as an absurd flavor of misdirection.

Fucking over the Iranians? They are in bed with the Iranians? And until recently it was the US and the West that held sway with most of the Arab world until Fredo unilaterally abdicated that position from Egypt to Saudi Arabia. Not to mention Russia has it's own Islam problem on it's southern border.

But now, suddenly it matters to Barky McBarkface?

If the Russians hacked us during the election period it means that there patterns were continuing as usual. It also means that their insistence that Hillary and 85 % of the administration officials did "nothing wrong" by having "personal unsecured servers" containing government sensitive and classified material is bullshit.

It also means that since Obama has claimed that "his goal was to insure that the election was untainted" by cyber attacks?

Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy states that in any bureaucratic organization there will be two kinds of people:

First, there will be those who are devoted to the goals of the organization. Examples are dedicated classroom teachers in an educational bureaucracy, many of the engineers and launch technicians and scientists at NASA, even some agricultural scientists and advisors in the former Soviet Union collective farming administration.

Secondly, there will be those dedicated to the organization itself. Examples are many of the administrators in the education system, many professors of education, many teachers union officials, much of the NASA headquarters staff, etc.

The Iron Law states that in every case the second group will gain and keep control of the organization. It will write the rules, and control promotions within the organization.
