Ace of Spades Pet Thread

cat.jpg

Welcome to the Ace of Spades Pet Threads. Take a break from college basketball, Christmas shopping and heavy drinking. Let's talk about pets and animals and maybe your little brother who is after all a pet and an animal. Enjoy!

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Yeah Boss, I'm stuck in a traffic jam. No I haven't been drinking. Dogs are the problem.

Gives new meaning to It's gone to the dogs

Even among pets there are some that are Bah-Humbug about Christmas.

Can the pet thread have a feel good story of the day?I sure hope so.

Kids get a chance to practice their reading skills.

Quite the leaf pile you had there.

Meet The PetMorons

sassy.jpg

Our first PetMoron today is Sassy. Here is her story.
"Longtime lurker, Lanrick. Here is a picture of our dog Sassafras, or Sassy. She is a rescue animal, just over a year old, and half pug half lab."

jeb.jpg

You Morons crack us up here at the Pet Thread. Here is Jeb and his Moron telling us all about him. Of course Jeb the pup, is a total sweetheart.
"Longtime lurker, almost never poster. Registered as "rabidsquirrel".

This fuzzy guy is my foster dog Jeb. He's a 10 month old Pit Bull with some hound in him. He enjoys squirrels, pooping, and licking himself. And he's a total sweetheart."

dick cheneys cat.jpg

Dick Cheney's Cat submitted this photo of Zoey. Here is some background info on her. "Zoey is pure bred apple head Siamese. Which means she couldn't be shown in a cat show, they only show the wedgie's.

I named her after her father Zoechen.

Don't you think that cat heaven mainly consists of full bellies, sunbeams and a firebox? "

joe2.jpg

Hey Joe, where you going with that bone in your mouth. (I'ms so sorry couldn't help myself)
A Lurker submitted this about Joe. "This is Joe. He was a feral stray we found 8 years ago. Joe would not let me touch him, although he would come and take food out of my hand. We won Joe over a few days before Christmas and convinced him to come inside the house. I think cold temps had something to do with that. Do not be fooled by the sweet face. This is his 'bitch, get to the kitchen and make me a sammich' look. I am not joking.

(Occasional poster/mostly lurker that would like to stay anonymous). Thank you."

No, thank you for sharing the story.

These are my Pet Thread Compliance Pics

My first kitty is a 14 year old tabby named Penny. Sadly she won't make it to 15 as she's been given a few months at best by the vet after I took her in for seizures and she has been diagnosed with cancer. For now I'm doing what I can to make her comfortable in her last days, she's a sweet kitteh and I'll miss her very much when it's time

My second kitty is a 9 year old Tortoiseshell named April who fortunately is in much better condition and is as playful as she is chubby.

champ.jpg

This photo has been submitted by Martin. His dog's name is Champ. Sounds as if Champ has lived a cruel life.
"This is Champ. He's a Swedish Vallhund we picked up while living in the U.K. He's the friendliest dog in the neighborhood, an outstanding watchdog, and sworn enemy to all squirrels, rabbits, geese, and crows. He's also a very good dog and thus earns many cookies and blueberries throughout the day."

Normally the Pet Thread is politics free and it will remain so. Anybody who has a pet who is patient enough to wear a cap deserves to be in the thread.

max lurker .jpg

Meet Max. A Lurker submitted this photo of the a good looking dog. Heads up pets wearing Lib clothing will not be featured

So that wraps it up for another week. Not sure what we have planned for next week's Pet Thread as it is Christmas Eve Day. We'll think of something. Tips, stories, pet photos, c'mon you know where to send them petmorons at gee mail dot com.

Have a great week everybody!

5 Eldest daughter brought a cat home with her when she moved back in this year. The new cat, Minnie, and our two kitties have finally worked out a living arrangement. Don't know much about Minnie's past, but she doesn't meow. She tries, but nothing comes out. She squeeks, and chatters at birds.

9 Thanks for putting my kittehs up this week, MH!

Penny has been comfortable so far, I give her the pate canned food which is easy for her to eat and she has been eating quite a bit. I haven't had to give her the pain meds as much, look for signs the tumor might be hurting by looking at how she walks.

My fat kitteh April is currently snoring loudly under my bed.

10 Have you ever seen those videos where a cat goes all bug-eyed and darts its head around like it's having a seizure and licks frantically at the air? Turns out little Lydia does that if you scratch her back right where it meets her tail. A little like this, except without the vocalizing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-UiaMiwC7o

I will use this knowledge for good and mild evil.

12 Gosh, kbdabear, I am so sorry about your kitteh Penny. Our 14 y.o. had a seizure a few months ago that turned out to be she no longer had diabetes. It left her completely blind for one day, but now she seems to see pretty well. Both kittehs are hyperthyroid now, and the 14 y.o. is allergic to the meds, so both kittehs are on the food, which they are not fans of.

Will keep Penny (and you) in my prayers. They really are like little fur children, aren't they?

13 "Zoey is pure bred apple head Siamese. Which means she couldn't be shown in a cat show, they only show the wedgie's.

No offense to anyone, but I don't get the attraction to wedge headed siamese or extreme persians. These cats have deliberately been bred to the point where they look distorted and ugly, accompanied by health problems.

16 Love to see the Moron Pets.

Today, I wanted to talk about my Magic Leash.

When our abused Poodly Puppy came to us, he cried all the time. Even while being held. Until I put him on a leash. He stopped crying. Slept next to the bed in a garden trug. Doing much better now.

The Magic Leash also helps our older dogs get motivated to go outdoors, in their own yard, at the proper times. Ahem. And reassures Little Buddy that he is safe from our disciplinarian dog, old Warrior Princess Maggie.

29 Had a first for Conor today. I put on his leash and we headed out through the garage as usual. Normally, he expects to take a sniff walk around the property to make sure the perimeter is secure and evaluate squirrel status. Today though, he just stopped right at the car door where knows he has a seat ready for traveling. So we packed up and drove to Manassas Battlefield Park and had a nice walk in an area he had never been before. It was brisk enough he didn't walk me into the ground as usual and appreciated getting back in the car but we had a lovely afternoon.

He is now a soundly sleeping dog curled up in a bed that fits just right.

33 My mini dachshund, Lucky, recently gave me a scare. I let him out of his crate and he scampered to the front door like he always does and I let him out. He normally barks when he's ready to come in, but he didn't this time. I opened the door and he was just standing there. Rather than bounding through the front door, he had trouble getting over the threshold. Seems to be getting better, but he's been moving slow.

40 Was sitting at the kitchen table after Jules put something in the oven last night. I smelled burnt plastic so opened up the oven door.

There was a spatula at the bottom of the oven w/ a melted handle stinking up the place. I called her and neither one of us had any idea how the spatula got there.

Well after she thought a bit she figured it out. In this weather I crack open the oven door when it is done to let the heat out into the room. One of the dang dogs had knocked the spatula into the oven and we hadn't noticed.

At least it's not as expensive as the time Bailey ate dozens of Christmas cookies while cooling. The joys of big dogs.

41 Pet thread! Pet thread! Yay!

I didn't read last week's thread until days later. Glad to be here while it's "live."

I mentioned several weeks back that our good ol' doggeh Gimli had bleeding from the anus. He was acting, not like he was in pain, but kind-of miserable and slow.

Vet was talking about colonoscopy, chemo, and "making him comfortable" - we weren't going to go the $$$ route for the old guy, though.

Vet suggested dietary changes to make passing poop easier - cut out the dry food, add pumpkin (!?!) to his food. We did that, plus adding coconut oil and diatomacious earth (good for parasites, I think Milady said), and Milady even gave him some homeopathic remedy. (Laugh if you like, we've had some apparent successes with homeopathics for pets.)

On top of the troubles at the back end, he also broke his left ear, ended up all floppy, giving him an all-the-time half-sad look. Vet said they could sort-of fix that.

I told Gimli, if he'd quit bleeding, we'd get the surgery to repair his ear.

Well, it's been a couple of weeks now since we've seen any blood. Wasn't really cancer? Was, but is in remission? Something worse has been internalized and he's about to keel over any day?

I don't know, but he's become much perkier, running, jumping into the car, doing his happy dance at meal time again. We're cautiously hopeful.

Now I may have to actually splurge on the ear repair surgery. Cosmetic, but I'd do it happily if he's well.

PS The cats found out about the pumpkin-coconut oil addition to the dog's food and a couple of them have been demanding their own, too. Weird.

47 We lost ours last year, at age 14-1/2, a female Belgian sheepdog, small for her breed, about 20 inches at the withers, weighed between 37 and 40 pounds her whole life. Full size is 24 to 27 inches and 55 to 65 pounds.

There are four variants of the Belgian shepherd, the Malinois the best known because drugs and military. The Groenendahl is what we had, all black, long hair, big neck ruff. Imagine a show-quality coyote, 100 percent black, and that was our girl.

She lived almost her whole life in a small town in far upstate NY, in the mountains, in a leash-free environment, the adjacent wild forest her own turf.

Never barked, we could take her anywhere, she loved being with us, and us with her. She is terribly missed.

We picked her from a litter of 10, she the smallest, the breeder had already picked theirs, a male, who won best of breed at Westminster at age 2. Ours had the royal look and the showgirl prancing walk, but because she was a runt, was un-showable.

Our daughter had a Belgian, too, but theirs was a barker.

We've both, daughter and family and us, a line on a pair of females from a litter out east of Sacramento, a two day drive. The route is up across Wyoming and then Utah, with an overnight out in some high desert town with nothing but a cheap motel and a casino. Not fun, but if you want a pup and a specific breed, you gotta do it.

We thought maybe we wanted a Corgi, and there are litters available within fifteen minutes of our driveway, but we went and looked, and came away still wanting another Belgian.

50 I like Jeb, it looks like he's in a bar.
One of our friends dogs, he was a truck dog, would jump out of the truck at the bank, or post office. His owner couldn't find him and would leave saying he knows the way to the ranch.
The dog was smarter than that, he would walk to the local bar and lay down in front of the door. He knew his owner would show up eventually or a friend would drive the dog home.
That dog lived to be about 15. Heinz 57 type of dog.

I get close enough to side of the truck to look in the bed and this cat rears up mouth wide open and all claws extended. I did happen to notice the two kittens she had with her as I was running backwards.

77 BTW, when daughter was moving, she gave us a bag with a few cat toys - including little mice, one with a ribbon "tail" tied on.

Our two guy cats have gone nuts for them. Of course, if one is playing, the other wants that mouse, and they have a stand-off. I get the feeling we could have a dozen of 'em and they'd still fight over one.

Mrs H. Had a naming convention that cats usually got names determined by their characteristics like Smokey Cat, Honky Cat, Camouflage Cat (aka Camo Cat), Scooter Cat, etc.

Dogs, however, usually got people names, thus Sofie Dog, Toby Dog, Tucker, and Conor! The Vizsla was an exception (Prinz), but it fit him perfectly.

My cats wouldn't sit still for that.

But Reggie, if I pet him on the lower back area, turns his head towards me, opens his mouth really wide, and goes, "Rrraaaaaaahhhhhhhh." It's like a squawk. It's not loud, and he doesn't seem like he's in discomfort. It's sort of the sound I would imagine a pterodactyl making. My other cat never does that.
