SF supports immigrants -- just not into our neighborhoods By Vincent WooWorking theory: All people are actually nationalists. It's just that New Yorkers, DCers, and SFans have decided their "nation" is their own provincial dirty city.
San Francisco is one of the most progressive cities in the nation, especially when it comes to national immigration. We believe so much in the natural right of people to join us here in America that we fought to keep our status as sanctuary city even in the face of being federally defunded for it. We pride ourselves on our rejection of plans to tighten immigration controls and deport undocumented immigrants. Yet take that same conversation to the local level and all bets are off. City meetings have become heated, divisive and prone to rhetoric where we openly discuss exactly which kinds of people we want to keep out of our city. This is an ethically incoherent position. If we in San Francisco so strongly believe that national immigration is a human right, then it seems strange to block migration into our own neighborhoods. Consider the San Francisco Board of Supervisors' decision to challenge the environmental review of a proposed housing project at 1515 Van Ness Ave. Despite the project's plan to rent 25 percent of its units at a below-market rate, many members of the neighborhood preservation group, Calle 24, expressed anger that the project might bring tech workers into the Latino Cultural District. Or that members of the Forest Hill homeowners association opposed a project that would build affordable housing for seniors and the formerly homeless on a site now occupied by a church. One of the grievances aired was that it might bring mentally unstable or drug-addicted people into the neighborhood. Both of these groups are reacting to the threat of change. In both cases, residents took it as a given that they were within their rights to control who lived in their neighborhoods. Conservatives see national immigration as a privilege to carefully dole out. Liberals see immigration as a human right that needs to be protected. San Francisco progressives view living in certain neighborhoods as a privilege to be earned, and see nothing wrong with preventing certain groups of people from moving in, a traditionally conservative view.

Add in that people want to keep the "character" of their neighborhood, by which they mean they don't want anyone tearing down a row of Victorian homes and putting up a 20+ story apartment building and NIMBY on steroids.

Tech workers making 300,000 to 600,000 a year can put a lot of pressure on a neighborhood where the median income is say $60,000.

I'm a land use attorney. You would not believe some of the wealthy property owners who vote for all the "right" candidates and issues, and then think that that's going to cut them a break when the Board of Stupidvisers votes to tighten rent control or make property ownership more onerous. Nope.
I could go on with stories. It's hilarious, and sad. It's balanced by the generally great weather (our lows in winter are generally in the mid-40's and summers have highs in the 60's - 70's), the weed, especially the edibles, are primo, the cultural and recreational opportunities are outstanding, etc. It's the politics that suck.

Feel the same way about NYC. There's something not-right about paying ridiculous rents and putting up with all the noise and crowding; but bragging that the ability to get falafel at 3 in the morning somehow makes up for it.

This reminds me of that business that went down in, I want to say it was Marin County, when George Lucas wanted to expand some part of Lucasfilms onto land he already owned. I've been looking at some of the #nevertrump twitter feeds. I'd say Gary Rosen of WSJ is typical. He retweets (endorses) articles from Vox, is against stereotypes (like Muslims are terrorists), is pro immigration, and is anti-Russia and anti-hacking. I don't really know how all these things go together, but if you're pro-immigration, pro-Muslim immigration, against hateful (true) stereotypes, demonize Russia, and are buy into the fake news/Russia hacking stories, then I don't really know in what sense you're fighting against the dominant, Vox News forces that are constantly the pushing the mainstream to the left. The vast Atlantic to Vox circle jerk also encompasses WSJ, Weekly Standard, NRO, etc. They all read the same stuff and think the same thoughts. The presence of this, shall we say, "element" so horrified the liberal all-inclusive (almost all white) gentry of BH that they pressured the police to severely restrict access to the basketball courts and harass the ghetto kids from going there.
I would say that the severe hypocrisy of those who want to install a party into power that, literally, is for using government coercion to forcibly "integrate" neighborhoods, while forcibly preventing integration in their own, surprises me, but, well, it doesn't.

I went to a high school orchestra recital once. The music teacher got up on stage (looking like a dirty hippy), and talked about what a great high school it was. Football, academics, whatnot. After each announcement ("we are number one in track and field this year!") everyone cheered. She finished with "and we are officially one of the most diverse schools in the country!" My first thought was "wow, that must be tough. Lots of kids with lots of different backgrounds and languages". I thought she meant it as, look at what we have achieved despite this difficulty. Then I noticed about half the audience was cheering, wildly, enthusiastically. They took what she said as another achievement in and of itself. Diversity itself was the goal. Just like a winning football team, a good orchestra, or solid academics, good diversity was important.
The other half of the audience, including many of the obviously minority parents, looked around baffled. What are they cheering for? The line about diversity? Wha...?
This was the first time I realized "these people are insane and may well kill us all."

San Francisco progressives view living in certain neighborhoods as a privilege to be earned, and see nothing wrong with preventing certain groups of people from moving in, a traditionally conservative view.
Well ... half the reason for wanting to make money is to be able to move into a good neighborhood. When idiots then want to force bad elements into your good neighborhood - that you earned and paid lots of money to get into - that's a big problem.
BTW, the most restrictive housing on Earth is to be found in New York City co-ops. They are the last places in the US that have retained the natural right to decide who can or cannot live in their little "village". In fact, they go well beyond the natural right of property owners to decide who they want to sell their property too (in the "legal fiction" because co-ops are not "property") and it is the co-op board that gets to decide on every possible transfer. New York City co-ops can deny sales to anyone they choose, for any reason.
You won't find places much further left than many of the exclusive New York co-ops and you won't find any place more restricted. Personally, I support their right to manage their properties as they see fit (and those who do buy in do so knowing that they will have to have the board okay any later transfer of the property).

The last time I visited SF, there was a town home facing the Palace of Fine Arts (across the park pond) for sale. If I had had had had the money to buy it and pay taxes on it for 20-30 years, I would be living in it today.

San Francisco was grubby and in places dangerous from the '70s into the later '80s, at which point it started to clean up and the more violent elements began to decamp from the city.
Yeah, ten years is a good threshold for the downhill trend, once a lot of the dot-com money had vaporized and the last vestiges of sane government had been purged.
You are still less likely to be robbed than you were 25 years ago, but the odds of a car break-in or having to walk through human excrement from passed-out druggies spiked substantially with the state's cram-down of criminals to county jails in response to the Federal court-ordered reduction in the prison population, and then Prop 47 a few years ago, and it's gonna get worse after the next one passed this time.

San Francisco was grubby and in places dangerous from the '70s into the later '80s, at which point it started to clean up and the more violent elements began to decamp from the city.
Yeah, ten years is a good threshold for the downhill trend, once a lot of the dot-com money had vaporized and the last vestiges of sane government had been purged.
You are still less likely to be robbed than you were 25 years ago, but the odds of a car break-in or having to walk through human excrement from passed-out druggies spiked substantially with the state's cram-down of criminals to county jails in response to the Federal court-ordered reduction in the prison population, and then Prop 47 a few years ago, and it's gonna get worse after the next one passed this time.

It has faded to a mere shadow of its former self, and the city itself has become Chinatown. You don't have to trek to Pender and Main to dine at a classy Chinese joint; you can go to 49th and Arbutus, and avoid all the downtown traffic.
Certainly not an issue of racism, though. Most of the newcomers are admirable people, but there are so many wealthy newcomers, with so much money, that native-born Vancouverites (including those of Chinese ethnicity) are being priced out of their homes.

While Chrissy Field beach is a great place to turn the dogs loose (more dogs than people under 18 in SF, by the way), I liked having the open airfield for public festivals, as opposed to a tidal lagoon, although they did also make lawn space.

In his "History of the American People" Paul Johnson wrote that San Fran was already well established as a "Sin City" by the late 19th century, with lots of brothels (some of which, even then, catered to homosexuals).
San Fran and New Orleans were always places where behavior that would get you into trouble in Iowa or South Carolina would be, if not encouraged, ignored.
