Not even city, their tiny little neighborhood. San Francisco is ground zero for the raging hypocrisy on this due to the geography of the area limiting expansion. Add in that people want to keep the "character" of their neighborhood, by which they mean they don't want anyone tearing down a row of Victorian homes and putting up a 20+ story apartment building and NIMBY on steroids. *passes popcorn around* Raaaacists. I agree with the premise but I'm confused by this article.
"The project might bring tech workers into the Latino Cultural District." Is "tech workers" some kind of code for "illegal immigrants" ? And I'm pretty sure a neighborhood called the "Latino Cultural District" in a place like San Francisco is going to already have plenty of illegals. "One of the grievances aired was that it might bring mentally unstable or drug-addicted people into the neighborhood." Again, what does this have to do with illegals, specifically? If only. It's a heady mix all year long but during the rainy season there is time to time relief. From the last rain in April/May to the 1st rain in Oct/Nov there is no relief. The Aztecs in Zod's region know that Zod shops for limes at the Bestway because they're much cheaper than the Safeway limes (and they're juicier; doubleplusgood gin and tonics). The Aztecs resent this because they know my custom indicates to the Bestway owner that his limes are likely underpriced if the blancos are coming to his store to buy them.
Zod resents the Aztecs for walking, zombie-like, across four lanes of busy Frogger-like traffic (with kids) rather than crossing at the light. Karma is, I think, balanced. Posted by: General Zod at December 16, 2016 12:20 PM (Bdeb0) 124

San Francisco progressives view living in certain neighborhoods as a
privilege to be earned, and see nothing wrong with preventing certain groups of people from moving in, a traditionally conservative view. I've been looking at some of the #nevertrump twitter feeds. I'd say Gary Rosen of WSJ is typical. He retweets (endorses) articles from Vox, is against stereotypes (like Muslims are terrorists), is pro immigration, and is anti-Russia and anti-hacking. I don't really know how all these things go together, but if you're pro-immigration, pro-Muslim immigration, against hateful (true) stereotypes, demonize Russia, and are buy into the fake news/Russia hacking stories, then I don't really know in what sense you're fighting against the dominant, Vox News forces that are constantly the pushing the mainstream to the left. The vast Atlantic to Vox circle jerk also encompasses WSJ, Weekly Standard, NRO, etc. They all read the same stuff and think the same thoughts. No wonder #NeverTrumpers are constantly retweeting leftist memes like fake news and Russian hacking.

Heh - same thing happened in Brooklyn Heights (BH). The most ultra rich and ultra liberal neighborhood in Brooklyn ( for a place with almost no parking there sure are a lot a Priuses on the street there - or as I like to call them: "Piouses").
Anyway - they pushed heavily to build a park a long the waterfront facing Manhattan, where there used to be abandoned warehouses - complete with playing fields and basketball courts - well - with the new basketball courts came a whole lot of folks with, shall we say, a darker skin shade than those living in BH, who were playing to the wee hours. The presence of this, shall we say, "element" so horrified the liberal all-inclusive (almost all white) gentry of BH that they pressured the police to severely restrict access to the basketball courts and harass the ghetto kids from going there. I would say that the severe hypocrisy of those who want to install a party into power that, literally, is for using government coercion to forcibly "integrate" neighborhoods, while forcibly preventing integration in their own, surprises me, but, well, it doesn't. 702 688 Art is not a 'need'... Its a Luxury. So the question becomes should the Government use the power of Taxation... ie the THREAT of putting me in Jail, to take my money for someone's Luxury... a Luxury I will never enjoy... Posted by: Don Q. at December 16, 2016 11:56 AM (qf6WZ) Art can be a personal luxury, a private indulgence, sure, but public art is intended as a means of civic expression by which people are inspired and united by a common national identity and shared ideals. Two different things. ____________________________________________ OK throwing a flag on this one. The government buying art to decorate a public space or building is A-OK and should be done sparingly and with guidelines that ensure the tastefulness of the art that is being installed. The government "funding the arts" i.e. providing block grants to artists, television stations, theatre/ movie production companies etc. is always completely wrong in every way shape and form. Period. The government should never interfere with the arts and vice versa; which is what always happens when money gets involved. The government then puts itself in charge of deciding what "art" is worthy of being funded and which is not - which is wrong on so many levels. Any artist ( and I am one in my spare time - performing arts, musician, acting, musical theatre) should abhor such a thing. Further, the Federal government taking money away from say, Utah, to fund performance art in New York City strikes me as the ultimate in wrong. Trump should end this ridiculousness immediately and defund the CPB and all "arts grants." When the left howls simply say: when I have finished ensuring that the VA is overhauled, staffed and properly working to give care to our wounded vets I may think about giving money to "artists" and rich television production companies (but don't hold your breath) - until then GFY." Look, let's be honest here. Rich liberals prefer to behave like the "soldiers" who have stolen valor. They wish to have medals on their chests, without actually having to face combat. pretending to care about the poor is how they steal that valor. Dumping illegals in your neighborhood makes them look good at zero personal cost. The moment any sacrifice must be carried by them personally, they become weak and cowardly.
I've often volunteered for charities, and I use dot be surprised at how few liberals ever show up vs. how many conservatives and religious types. They are all hat and no cattle. Posted by: Bane at December 16, 2016 12:33 PM (UgF8H) 191

I went to a high school orchestra recital once. The music teacher got up on stage (looking like a dirty hippy), and talked about what a great high school it was. Football, academics, whatnot. After each announcement ("we are number one in track and field this year!") everyone cheered. She finished with "and we are officially one of the most diverse schools in the country!" My first thought was "wow, that must be tough. Lots of kids with lots of different backgrounds and languages". I thought she meant it as, look at what we have achieved despite this difficulty. Then I noticed about half the audience was cheering, wildly, enthusiastically. They took what she said as another achievement in and of itself. Diversity itself was the goal. Just like a winning football team, a good orchestra, or solid academics, good diversity was important.
The other half of the audience, including many of the obviously minority parents, looked around baffled. What are they cheering for? The line about diversity? Wha...? I recall reading of a Byzantine emperor, pressed by the turkish armies, who planned to sell his crown and scepter for war funds. He had a riot on his hands when the rumor spread.

Lord Sir X: "It's like my theory that they all support affirmative action, right up to the point where they sacrafice something for it. Then it's different."
Topical, hilarious, head-shaking example. Leland Yee, CA state rep from SF (with a substantially ethnic Chinese base and district), a vile automaton (i.e. typical Democratic CA politician) who rubberstamped every stupid, destructive, racist, idiotic, unconstitutional thing he and his group of ignorant low-IQ scum could dream up, magically found religion on yet another attempt to weasel in affirmative action to CA university admissions. Gee, anyone wonder why? Oh - an issue that directly negatively affected many of his constituents (parents to typically high-achieving youngsters) came on the screen. These people, who are fine with every other stupid, destructive, racist, idiotic, unconstitutional thing the Dems can dream up - were OUTRAGED that their little snowflakes might be edged out for admission by Juan or DeMarcus. Oh - and Yee now sits in a federal pen (well, I think he got hard prison time, anyway) for pleading guilty to wild, serious felonies including - not making this up - international illegal arms trafficking. Oh - and lastly, Yee of course was among the "leaders" of CA's idiotic Dems in harassing firearms owners and infringing their constitutional rights, for no arguable public purpose. San Francisco progressives view living in certain neighborhoods as a privilege to be earned, and see nothing wrong with preventing certain groups of people from moving in, a traditionally conservative view.
Well ... half the reason for wanting to make money is to be able to move into a good neighborhood. When idiots then want to force bad elements into your good neighborhood - that you earned and paid lots of money to get into - that's a big problem. BTW, the most restrictive housing on Earth is to be found in New York City co-ops. They are the last places in the US that have retained the natural right to decide who can or cannot live in their little "village". In fact, they go well beyond the natural right of property owners to decide who they want to sell their property too (in the "legal fiction" because co-ops are not "property") and it is the co-op board that gets to decide on every possible transfer. New York City co-ops can deny sales to anyone they choose, for any reason. You won't find places much further left than many of the exclusive New York co-ops and you won't find any place more restricted. Personally, I support their right to manage their properties as they see fit (and those who do buy in do so knowing that they will have to have the board okay any later transfer of the property). For them, there is no consequence to illegal immigration--they're not taking their jobs, not living in their neighborhoods, not going to their schools, none of that. None of the Mexican Snow on the streets they drive down. So, when they see the rest of the nation opposed to illegal immigration, they see it through their lens. And the only reason--if there are no consequences to you personally--to oppose it then is: Racism. Posted by: Hugh Jorgen at December 16, 2016 12:56 PM (R5EqA) This is what happened to California as a whole in the 1990s. Irony of Cold War victory. It wasn't that the Left moved in, but rather that the Right moved out. Another irony of San Francisco: During WW2, then Korea, then Vietnam, dishonorably discharged gays were shipped back to Fort Mason or Hunter's Point, or flown back to SFO and dropped off. >> Well ... half the reason for wanting to make money
>> is to be able to move into a good neighborhood. There's two parts to this. One is that much of the parts of San Francisco occupied by the Google Hordes (Western Addition, Duboce, parts of the Mission, etc.) was once blue-collar middle-class housing, then through the '60s and '70s turned into gang-infested shitholes, and over the past decade has been gentrified back to white-collar middle-class housing. The blacks were priced out a decade ago (a bit of irony in that it took a black mayor's development plans to chase all the blacks out of SF) and Section 8ed off to the East Bay, the Hispanics are feeling the pinch now, and they don't like it. The other part of course is Section 8 and federal AFFH and the state's attempts to densify and urbanize the suburbs. We'll see if this continues with Trump in office. Posted by: rhomboid at December 16, 2016 12:46 PM (QDnY+) Indeed. Of course, we used the term "Hongcouver". Vancouver used to have a vibrant and exciting Chinatown, with many great restaurants, and fantastic neon signs. It has faded to a mere shadow of its former self, and the city itself has become Chinatown. You don't have to trek to Pender and Main to dine at a classy Chinese joint; you can go to 49th and Arbutus, and avoid all the downtown traffic. Certainly not an issue of racism, though. Most of the newcomers are admirable people, but there are so many wealthy newcomers, with so much money, that native-born Vancouverites (including those of Chinese ethnicity) are being priced out of their homes. Better to stay sane, and keep words functional, distinguishing between nationalism and localism. In the early 19th C - and before - few would have made this mistake. The French Revolutionaries were certainly nationalists, which is one reason the Vendee and Toulon rebelled. (I'll grant you have some good company here; Chesterton slipped on this several times, and one of Orwell's worst essays makes just this mistake; he'd have better reread his own on politics and the English language.) It gets even better: ask someone in Marin County why BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) was never built into Marin County. Any guesses why? It's to keep the poor unwashed masses out of their idyllic liberal enclaves of Mill Valley, San Rafael, Sausalito, etc.
And you can be sure there ain't no resettlement of Syrian refugees in Marin and I would be shocked to hear that SF has taken more than a few. Posted by: Edmund C. at December 17, 2016 07:52 AM (PUP8K) Processing 0.04, elapsed 0.067 seconds. |
