Sunday Overnight Open Thread (12/4/16)

sunday night ont above fold.jpg

Cheer up, it's The ONT. And besides, tomorrow never comes.

But in case you don't believe the ONT. Take heart. You can stay positive.

The power of positivity.

Quotes of The Day

"Until religious leaders stand up and take responsibility for the actions of those who do things in the name of their religion, we will see no resolution." — The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

"Fidel Castro did a very important thing: he made Cuba what it is. He turned a small island state which no one spoke about, into an important factor of world politics. He made Cuba the state whose opinion cannot be ignored by world powers today," Professor Lazar Kheifets of St. Petersburg State University, Russia,

"If we make ourselves worthy of America's ideals, if we do not forget that our nation was founded on the premise that all men are creatures of God's making, the world will come to know that it is free men who carry forward the true promise of human progress and dignity." --Dwight D. Eisenhower

Stabbing a bunch of people for not believing the same things that you do is the very definition of hatred and intolerance, yet you self-absorbed little shits dare project the guilt for this heinous act upon the rest of us? No. Here's the deal. The disgusting piece of trash who attempted this slaughter was here in this country as a guest, funded by taxpayers like me who've been in the workforce for 20+ years. We literally rescued him and his family, and this is how he repaid us--by whining about oppression and microaggressions as he plotted a murderous act of terrorism against innocent people. **Warden Open Blogger Ace of Spades

Meet Ulay. Artist and Art Thief.

A highly suspicious van pulled up opposite the New National Gallery in Berlin and was left running. Out of it walked a tall, slender man in a graphite-colored raincoat and on into the museum. After leaving his jacket at the coat check, he walked down to the basement with a pair of wire-cutter pliers in his pocket. He passed through a climate-control glass barrier until he stood before three small Romantic German paintings by Carl Spitzweg, including one that was an icon to all mid-20th-century Germans—The Poor Poet. But there was a guard, too close for comfort, and the slender man had to get rid of him. On the wall opposite The Poor Poet was a painting of chess players, so he turned to stand before it, and he started laughing, loudly, almost maniacally. The guard approached him, looked at the painting and asked, “What’s so funny?” Heart thundering, the slender man spun and dashed to The Poor Poet, clipped the wire on which it hung with his pliers, ripped it off the wall, and ran. He passed through the climate barrier as the alarm blared. He flew up the stairs, through the foyer, wove around the crowd of people clogging the entrance as they waited to get in, crashed through the emergency exit, the painting under his arm, and sprinted to the car. Adrenaline pumping, the guards close behind, he slipped on the snow outside, as a guard screamed, “Now we get him!” But he was up on his feet and kept running to the very ugly, highly suspicious van. He had locked all the doors but propped the lock to the driver’s door open with chewing gum. Now he pulled it open, jumped inside, slammed the door and locked it behind him, as the guards tore at the handle. A guard was holding the handle of the door as he lurched the van forward.

One of the best cartoon's evah, The Far Side. 11 twisted facts about The Far Side. Take insects for example.

6. FANS OF THE STRIP HAVE NAMED THREE DIFFERENT INSECTS AFTER GARY LARSON.

In 1989, entomologist Dale Clayton discovered a brand new species of biting louse that exclusively targets owls. When the time came to name it, his first choice was Strigiphilus garylarsoni. Clayton wrote the cartoonist to ask for his blessing. This proposed insect name, he explained, was the scientist’s way of recognizing the “enormous contribution that my colleagues and I feel you have made to biology through your cartoons.” Larson happily gave Clayton the green light. “I considered this an extreme honor,” the "Far Side" creator said in retrospect. “Besides, I knew that nobody was going to write and ask to name a new species of swan after me.”

Indeed, scientific nomenclature has yet to give us a “Larson’s swan.” However, in addition to Strigiphilus garylarsoni, there’s now a beetle called Garylarsonus and a butterfly known as Serratoterga larsoni.

Do you have travel plans for the upcoming Holidays? If so you, you may want to think about what you might pack. 11 of the strangest things airport security has found in luggage.

Yep, not a full human skull – just pieces of one! A flight leaving Fort Lauderdale was delayed when the flier’s luggage went through security and it was determined that the pots they were traveling with contained pieces of a human skull.

Warm feet, hotter bed? Here honey, a new bulk pack of socks for you. Because I care.

Not only do socks in bed help your sleep, they could also help your sex life.
A University of Groningen study found that, when provided with socks to wear, brain scans showed 80 per cent of couples were able to reach orgasm, compared to just 50% who could climax without socks.

Tonight's Musical Interlude

Texas loves their football. The University of Texas has spent a shit ton nearly 54 million over the past 3 years on coaches.

Speaking of college football. The conference champions have been crowned. The National Playoffs have been set. Bowl season is right around the corner. The complete NCAA 2016-2017 bowl lineup.

An early Christmas present for the Horde.

Christmas presents? It look likes Anthony Wiener needs some cash. Kleenex and lotion are a nice touch as well.

Hillary Clinton will never be president and and a fashion party is canceled as well. Oh the horror that Donald J. Trump was elected POTUS.

global-warming-sun-bathing.jpg

An open letter to President Elect Trump regarding climate change.

Dear President Elect Trump,

First off let me say congratulations on you outstanding victory. I supported and voted for you and am privileged to be a part of this historic moment. The stock market is up, Carrier and Ford are keeping their plants here, peace is breaking out across the globe and you're not even sworn in yet. I think ISIS will be a thing of the past now that you're in office as well. But I fear you biggest challenge still lies ahead of you and that is the threat of "Global Warming".

Like you I am a global warming skeptic and am so glad to finally have someone as President who thinks the way I do but globally the people have been brainwashed into thinking that Global Warming is the biggest threat to humanity there has ever been. People need something to fear and if you remove all other fears Global Warming will rear its ugly head and be the biggest threat once again. I already see it happening, not in real life of course, I'm talking about in the Mainstream Media, they are really ramping up the Global Warming Propaganda big time............

47 Scott Adams tells a great anecdote about his early cartooning career, in his omnibus three-volume Dilbert anthology. He got a call from United Media saying they wanted to pick up his comic. Adams, having never heard of them, and suspicious, asked whether they had any other major comic strips.

Long pause.

"We handle Peanuts. And Garfield."

At that point, he realized that he had blown any negotiating position he might possibly have taken.

I've been in PCS limbo for a while. I'm waiting for the bureaucracy that issues the badges you wear on your shirt to issue me a badge for my shirt, so I can go to my new fancy job. For about a month. Which is right about on par. Last time it was six weeks. Another time it was six weeks.

When you're a low-ranking type, that means raking leaves, mowing lawns, and handing out towels at the gym. You know, the types of jobs that are worth roughly $15/hour.

At my rank, they just tell us to call in every other day or so. Which is kind of awesome.

But they found a temp slot for me. Which is not awesome. I start tomorrow working some dumb job on base that they normally staff with folks waiting a few weeks to get their badge. It might suck.

Just go through life doing things YOU like to do, and you will meet someone with the same interests. There are just as many lonely women, or more, than lonely men out there, but they are going to shy away from some creepy depressed dude because of normal self preservation.

When you're pressing too hard in anything, you're going to choke, so just chill out.

Nope. We're firmly in the age of the Maximally Hostile Interpretation, where What If becomes Fact.

I'm already exhausted by it.

Part of the problem is that WikiLeaks played an actually important role in this election (which is not the problem), and *that* led to the introduction (or reintroduction) of a lot of people to the thinking of conspiracy enthusiasts who also follow WikiLeaks.

This transfer is unlikely to end quickly just because accusations remain unproven. After all, a good conspiracy leaves no proof, only suggestions and hints.

I actually saw it in the theater, way back when. It was odd. Arnie owned those types of roles in the 80's and early 90's. For him to then lampoon them was more than a bit anti-intuitive. They did not do a good enough job of selling in the movie what they were in fact doing. So what happened felt like a disjointed mess.

141 Scott Adams wrote a blog piece about "Pizzagate" a few days ago. I first saw something about it here, looked at it a but, and decided it was likely nonsense. It reminded me of the day-care child molesting satanic cult hysteria of the '80s, where a lot of innocent people were destroyed.

And that's what Scott Adams noticed to, and I looked into the allegations more out of curiosity, and it is very similar to those. Adams mentions the McMartin preschool case. There are very similar things here. Underground secret rooms and tunnels and all that shit.

The thing Pizzagate doesn't have is any actual alleged victims. The McMartin case did, and those "victims" were all children who had the idea they were abused planted in their heads by investigators and psychologists who were damn sure they had been abused and wouldn't take no for an answer. So the children said what they all wanted to hear.

He tells her "Do you want to be a loon? Just stop it..." "But during my childhood...." "We don't go there. Just stop it...."

Imagine someone showing up in a shrink's office today and saying, "I think I'm a woman trapped in a man's body..." "JUST STOP IT!" "I've been crying every day since Hillary lost..." "JUST STOP IT!" "I saw Trump's name written in chalk on the sidewalk and I was microaggressed so much I had to eat 10 doughnuts..."
"JUST STOP IT!"

246 Great Farts in History

According to the Greek historian Herodotus, a fart set off a chain of events that led to a revolt against King Apries of Egypt. The repercussions were even worse in first-century Jerusalem: The historian Josephus tells us that an irreverent Roman soldier lowered his pants, bent over, and "spoke such words as you might expect upon such a posture." The incident took place shortly before the Passover and caused a riot that led to the deaths of 10,000 people.

256 I did go through the 12 or so pages of "evidence" for PizzaGate that was posted on Reddit before the management there decided to stick their fat grubbies in.

It was one of the most over-wrought things I've ever read. Symmetrical logos are somehow proof of crime, jokes about disobedient children equal bondage, badly-drawn pictures of elves are Satanic, an admittedly creepy fake witch doing campfire tales is also proof of.... something, other than bad taste.

And *of course* they talk about food, they're foodies, they have huge food parties.

I don't know that this is "covering up" some other crime, but if it was, it would probably be illegal donations, electoral fraud, etc.

I lot of people see something suspicious, the problem is that they end up six leagues down the road of the narrative before they try to get their ducks in a row.

Hell, there *could* be "something" there, and I wish someone would find it if there was, instead of stacking suppositions on other suppositions.

Yeah there's a lot of bizarre stuff that's trotted out as evidence, then there's some stuff that makes you go "what the??" and then there is stuff that is pretty obviously code for something, but nobody knows what.

The trick is to look at it and decide there's more going on than meets the eye, not to invent stuff you think it might be. The pedo stuff seems plausible based on some of the imagery, but there's no real evidence.

278 >> As the allegations became more and more outrageous, very
>> few of the people involved in the prosecution backed down.

There were quite of few of these cases. I remember reading some WSJ articles about one in Wennatchee, WA, which was absolutely horrible.

The trouble with these things is people's rational mind, the ability to think critically shuts down with highly emotional cases (as well as deeply held beliefs). These things can just snowball into a full blown moral panic type of thing.

Witch hunts, the real hunts back in the day, were an example. As we've gotten more sophisticated, we look back on such things as embarrassing primitive behavior. But we still do it. Our witches just become more sophisticated.

Posted by: Votermom at December 04, 2016 11:03 PM (Om16U)

Or rather we impress patterns on random data looking for patterns- even if they are not there.

So, lets look at this from another side:

Is Podesta dirty? Yes.

Does Podesta give you the very creepy vibe? Yes.

Does Podesta speak in code in the emails in question? Yes.

Does Podesta have reason to speak about things in code? Yes.

Is Podesta possibly involved (as one of the Clinton operatives) in things where they might be doing possibly illegal things, which would require them to speak in code? Not forgetting Hillary's extraordinary paranoia- which no doubt infects her entire organization. Yes.

Taking Occam's to this idea, it is most likely what these people are looking at is garden variety political corruption of an organization we know to be dirty as sin.

The guy does not have to be a pedophile to be dirty, and there are things which are more likely that we are already pretty damn sure are true.

That's my take. Not saying the other is impossible, just that the simpler explanation is more likely and grounded.

Well that is what separates it from those moral panic witch hunts mentioned upthread. We have a pattern of weird behavior from some notably skeevy public figures, but no victims. In the above-mentioned moral panics, we had fabricated memories from spurious "victims" accusing veritable nobodies with no history of skeeviness. It's a complete inversion.

350 I saw a great Newhart Show clip the other day and one that could never be made today. A woman comes to see Newhart and starts telling him about all her neurotic fears, which range from being buried alive in a box to driving. He shouts at her "JUST STOP IT!" She says, "My mom..." He tells her "Do you want to be a loon? Just stop it..." "But during my childhood...." "We don't go there. Just stop it...."

Imagine someone showing up in a shrink's office today and saying, "I think I'm a woman trapped in a man's body..." "JUST STOP IT!" "I've been crying every day since Hillary lost..." "JUST STOP IT!" "I saw Trump's name written in chalk on the sidewalk and I was microaggressed so much I had to eat 10 doughnuts..."
"JUST STOP IT!"

Posted by: Votermom at December 04, 2016 11:08 PM (Om16U)

Yeah. That's one thing I tried pointing out to a woman I once knew who was sure (due to "recovered memories") that her parents had been part of a cult that had raped her and thousands of others, and killed infants and did all sorts of satanic shit. She was sure that thousands were involved and they had raped and killed zillions of kids.

Well, where were the bodies? Where were the victims? It's very difficult for even one person to just vanish without anybody noticing or finding bodies and she wanted me to think that had happened to hundreds.

Of course, her reply was that that the cops and law enforcement were part of the cult and were covering it up.

The problem with any conspiracy theory is that lack of evidence proves nothing to anybody who believes in the conspiracy - it just means the conspiracy is so huge that thousands and thousands of people are involved in covering it up.

The lack of evidence doesn't disprove a conspiracy either, sadly. The entire point of a conspiracy is that its being covered up or hidden, so not having hard evidence is part of the entire charm of the thing.

397 Aetius451AD,

I agree. We know that Brazile helped The Beast to cheat at the debate by slipping her questions ahead of time. We know that a media type prepared for his interview with Trump by asking Podesta what questions to ask.
Of course they're up to something corrupt. Without evidence, there's no telling what it is.

420 There's a lot of strange stuff going on with Podesta and his friends.

There are also a lot of really disturbing images on the jimmy comet instragram. Some are here:

https://sli.mg/a/gaffhM

Does this prove anyone is a pedophile? Of course not.

But some of these images are strange, and the comments are odd.

Plus...$21864.25 sent to Comet Ping Pong from American Bridge PAC, which is a Soros organization. Why?

Then there's the Spirit Cooking. Why hasn't the media asked about this? Why is the media not at all interested in any of this?

The fact that the media appears to be covering things up, and it all just seems to strange to normal people makes it easy to jump from "these are a bunch of creeps" to "these are a bunch of pedophiles who are possibly child killingsatainists."

There is certainly something weird about the Podesta brothers and that Spirit Cooking woman. At the very least, they're into the occult, which is a very dangerous thing. They may be actual Satanists or into some other brand of demon worship. They're also into some creepy art.

Some of the emails are strange but they could be completely innocent or inside jokes or references. When my brother and I get together, our humor gets bizarre and filled with references to our childhood experiences that only we know.

I tend to be skeptical of claims that there is some sort of universal language for pedophiles and that some pizza joint is the hub of pedophilia in DC. It's not impossible, but so far I'm not convinced.

Perfectly fine for it's intended uses, which is lakes (not the Great Lakes though), inland waterways and bays such as San Diego Bay, Galveston Bay, Chesapeake Bay.

I'd not take it offshore though, even a few miles out of Tampa Bay or such... there's just not enough margin of "blue water" capability built into the system to handle a sudden bad turn of wind or sea.

Another good candidate with similar limitations are the variants of the Hunter 25, as well as the Catalina 25. Pop-top, swing keel daysailers, with overnight capabilities. Port-a-potti heads, coleman-type stoves and icebox based food storage. (the MacGregor is a water-ballast system. Good for righting moment, lousy for no keel to keep from being set to windward on a broad reach though.)

I'd also look at which offers the easiest system for setting or breaking down the mast and rigging.

Three hours wrasslin' with all that in the boat ramp parking lot, after a long day on the water, would suck.

Most all of those are set up for outboard motors. Make sure you get a new-ish, modern four-stroke motor on yours.

Fair winds n' following seas, mate!

Well, I do gotta say. I had more than a few of those lovely ladies write phone numbers down on to pieces of paper and then hold them up and press 'em to the inside of the glass, where I could see the number through the reflective mirroring.

But damn, I couldn't see what kind o' species of female that was behind that number on the glass! Duh, mirrored!

That said, tinted windows weren't a problem. *grin*

646 Howdy roonz and roonettez! Today I met up with an old friend that I had lost track of and had a great visit. He has MS and is in a pretty bad way, the last time I saw him was right about the time my Laura was diagnosed and dealing with that I lost track of him. When Laura died I decided that I probably could find out what had happened to him, but didn't know if I really wanted to. I couldn't stand to lose both of them in such a short time. I'm happy to say he's still alive and as ornery as ever.

It's been a good day.

You described what I'd like to do almost to a tee, except you said don't do it. As I live less than 20 mi from Lake Michigan I was planning some near shore boating, and by that, I mean within sight of land. There's plenty of good sized inland lakes in Wi, Mi, and Mn to explore also.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. There was no disdain for the motor-sailor that I've gotten from more traditional sailors.

652 One Eyed Jack,

Those boats would be good "within sight of land" on the Lakes, just be damn sure of your weather forecasts!

Countless lake regattas on same or lesser boats proves the point.

Conversely, countless losses of sailors getting out there and over their heads abound, as well.

Those boats are perfect for sniffing out the selcluded cove, dropping anchor and enjoying a good lunch. Overnight there, or sail on home after.

But please do always allow yourself a margin of safety, and a plan for when (not if) things turn to shit.

And then you should enjoy many years of fine sailing.

No diss to the motorsailing, either. Hell, set it up right, and the boat on the trailer serves as a fair camper in it's own right.

That's a great way to hopscotch from lake to lake, be it the 10,000 lakes or wherever.

Enjoy!

654 Be careful with Propecia. Messing with hormones is a serious thing. Push down on that pooched up place in the carpet, and it comes up somewhere else, as it goes.

The dirty bird with male pattern hair loss is not testosterone per se, but one of it's metabolites, DHT. DHT is funny stuff. The hair on your head doesn't need it to grow, and in fact, in kills it, but the hair elsewhere on your body, that's what makes it grow. Secondary sex hair is DHT triggered.

And even then it gets even more complex. DHT can be produced locally, and they think that's what happens with male pattern baldness. It's DHT produced right in the hair follicles themselves by metabolizing testosterone that does it, not systemic DHT. They still don't have it completely figured out.

But guess what, estrogen is another metabolite of testosterone. When you take something that blocks the enzyme that makes DHT, it can shunt off the testosterone to estrogen production.

In fact, there was a lawsuit. Some "guy" sued the Propecia makes claiming it turned him into a woman. He got a sex change and said it was Propecia that first turned him into a tranny. That suit didn't go anywhere, and it was ridiculous, but it can increase the estrogen, and that's something you do not want.

All this varies from individual to individual. Some can be sensitive and others not.

That makes sense. Finasteride specificially blocks DHT. That is why it is effective.

Separately, it is bizarre how testosterone works. you would expect that a chemical would either kill hair follicles, or promote their growth.

But testosterone kills them on the scalp and grows them on the face. As OMC would say, "How Bizarre".

I didn't know much about the dude don't watch his tv shows and whatnot - I had read Ace's criticisms and his inane tweets but I was totally unprepared for the incredible level of BS that was coming out of his mouth on the Adam Carolla podcast.

Early on Adam was asking some basic questions and such and Neil decided to go off on some 4-level hierarchy of "galactic civilizations" that transcended time and space somehow. We were of course the lowest level because we are stuck on this rock (stupid humans - you need more SCIENCE! magic), not that there has ever been any sort of scientific proof of anything like a universal civilization, which would be obvious if it was capable of existing.

I was struck with the thought that this isn't science - this is science fiction (and bad pulp at that) and this dude is an idiot. Gave him a chance, turned it off after about three minutes. If this is what that yahoo is teaching in his planetarium they ain't getting their money's worth - and dude might want to consider more astrophysics and less gamer lore in his so-called SCIENCE!

681 What he was talking about there is the Kardashev Scale, which is hypothetical notion of ranking a civilization based on the energy and power leves available to it.

Type I = planetary energy. One can use the energy of a planet.
Type II = stellar power. Civ. can use the power output of a star.
Type III = galactic power. One can use the power output of a whole galaxy.

This is all just hypothetical musings. At Type III, one is just about a god, because one can manipulate spacetime at a whim if you can use and manipulate energy at that level. The Federation of Star Trek would be a Type II.

They should make the judge do the recount all by himself.

722 Trump needs to get on the ball in Nevada, New Hampshire, Minnesota, anywhere it was close.

He needs to start smacking back.

724 This is why the judiciary is important. I hope that the new administration rams constitutional judges down their throats.

725 It is just one more example of why we need an Art V convention to get control of runaway judges.

It doesn't matter anymore. She is rapidly loosing WI and has already lost PA. Her nefarious plot is out the window now and all she can do is collect campaign money for next time or to illegally spend on personal buisness.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at December 05, 2016 05:52 AM (mpXpK)

731 Vic. Not saying your wrong about that but I am not counting any chickens until the eggs hatch.

The egg cracks on Dec 13 and breaks all the way open at noon Eastern Time, Jan 20, 2017.

She was supposed to have a court case in PA today. It was cancelled yesterday because she failed to deliver the money to PA officials.

My guess she has already lined up a friendly "justice" to appeal to.

Maybe it's time for me to take a break from all this crap.

She is running out of time to go to court unless she can find another corrupt Obama judge who will give a sight unseen ruling.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at December 05, 2016 06:01 AM (mpXpK)

736 But on the other hand the Democrats have found another turd to call for a recount in FL. Scankles lost FL by over 100K votes. Obviously they have no possibility of overturning that so the strategy has to be to offset one of the States they are losing here with Jillie Billie. And the FL court is still controlled by Democrats.

738 I will recommend to one of my Federal Senators that they need to hold Impeachment trials on Judges that absolutely do not get the Constitution. THey should have a trial a month, until the rot is removed.

That Judge in MI would be a good start.

IIANM the last federal judge that was impeached was Alcee Hastings. He was caught red-handed in a bribery scandal. You can probably count the number of judges who have been removed from office via impeachment on one hand.

741 Yes, Vic.

The term of art in Washington is "Swim in your own lane."

We need Judges to not be legislators or an action arm of the Left. The checks and balances in the Constitution are there to be used when needed, and the need is present today.

Which is why we need an Art V convention. The Republicans are sure as hell not going to do it. We need to get the judiciary OUT of Washington. make them accountable, and easier to remove from the bench.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at December 05, 2016 06:19 AM (mpXpK)

743 742 Vic, the Senate could do all that starting in the next term. We need to encourage our current crop of GOPe losers to actually be the Congress the Founders imagined, and was for most of US history.

Posted by: NaCly Dog at December 05, 2016 06:21 AM (u82oZ)

744 OK, Dem idiots.

Worst case scenario is that none of these recounts are done by 12/13.

The Republican House decides the president.

Boo Fing hoo.

This clown in MI cites Bush versus Gore, but I guess he's too stupid to read the decision, which completely evicserates his argument.

The MI elections had says it's impossible at this point to count all the votes by 12/13. He said it was a reach even starting last Friday.

The reason for the two day delay specifically and unequivocally written into the MI statute was to allow for appeals. If that jackass of a judge had read the relevant MI precedent, he would have understood that.

The MI legislature certainly did not contemplate a fourth place unaggrieved candidate contesting an election over unsubstantiated rumors when it developed its Election Code.

The kicker to the ruling--and the part that will infuriate both the Federal and State appellate courts? The part where he says: the count will continue until he says it won't.

Nice try, ass.
