College campuses are really where learning serious subjects is supposed to take place. Colleges are really not supposed to be some Borscht Belt speakers circuit.
When I went to college I can't remember more than a couple of speakers on campus ... and they spoke about actual subjects, not just social crap. I'm sure the social crap people were there - we certainly had tons of joke departments that had no business at a university - but I doubt any of them got more than a handful of spectators.

I'm going to strongly recommend my daughter take her time and decide what she wants to do before going to any kind of school. She can actually, gasp, WORK for a few years until she's sure.
Nothing prepared me for a focused, valuable education like not having one in the work force for several years. Then school was like buying a hammer. Just a tool I needed to get a job done.

Oh, it's already a big thing. As a GC, I actually started asking to see copies of licenses and insurance because so many people lied to me.
I think most people would be surprised at how many subcontractors lie about being licensed plumbers / electricians. Many of whom are illegal.
That's not to say they don't know what they're doing, or that they don't do a good job, just that, uh -- yeah.

I don't remember anything super SJW when I went to college. Well, we did have the Vietnam protests, but I went to college in the South so they were rather vaguely lame. We had black people, everyone seemed to get along fine. We also had a bunch of Persians but they mainly kept to themselves and rode around in their shiny sports cars.

Nope. Previously, the KINDS of people that made more in life were also the KINDS of people that went to college to improve their skill set. Correlation doesn't imply causation and if you look at the rapidly declining increase associated with a college degree, you can see how wrong that thinking was.
College is a tool. Apprenticeships are a tool. Being useful is more of a personality trait.

I think Carolla is a funny, smart and interesting guy but I can only take him in limited batches or else I would end up disliking him. He is a pretty passive aggressive dude and quite negative 99% of the time. That can become toxic.

Why is it that you are now required to have 4 year degree to be a nurse, my wife HAS to go back to school because she has a 2yr degree, What a bunch of shit. Hospitals now Requires that new nurses have a 4yr degree. Luckily the Hospital will pay for the school but it still sucks. My wife had to train several recent grads that are on their THIRD degree and owe several thousands of dollars close to or over a hundred.

I don't have cable, so I rarely see Fixer Upper, but I do watch it whenever I get the chance. It's one of the few shows on cable that I like. I love the rapport between the husband and wife, and also the work they do.

It's a disaster. I'm no fanboy of unions, but whether it was the unions themselves or just the character of the workmen who joined those unions, that was great quality work.

My favorite was the inside cover on the distribution panel, which turned out not to belong there but was merely jammed into place, with the metal approximately one-quarter inch from the bare copper wire of the mains feed. One good bang on the inside cover would've produced same pretty exciting happenings. Thanks, Juan!

I also had to replace the bad breaker hot. I had no incoming breaker panel feeder breaker at the meter base. (I do now)
I do not like working something like that hot.

But honestly shocked and dismayed at the affirmative action wholistic admission BS.
Anyway, Kid the elder is basically paying around as much, or a little more, as she would for community college to study engineering now.
Kid the younger, my little lefty, seems like she's interested in nursing, which seems like a good, if tough, career. We'll see how she likes it after a volunteer stint at the hospital this summer.

Unfortunately a lot workers who come from other countries will cut corners or cover up mistakes if no one is around to see it. It's just the nature of where they came from. It's a shame because most are very competent craftsmen otherwise. I make it a point to personally oversee every project I have done to my property under the guise of just trying to learn. Another thing I do is tip my workers before they begin the work. Somehow they seem to feel more obligated to do a good job. Only been burned once out of a few dozen times.

Honestly I don't care if actors speak their politics. Just do it without insulting everyone that disagrees with you and claiming they're stupid, when your only apparent talent is looking pretty while you read words somebody else wrote.

The wriring in our house was done when it was built in 1910, and it still works. Its unsafe as hell but so far no fires. It needs replacing because the electrical demands of a 21st century home are far more than an early 20th... but it still works

He's the one who wanted me to augur out the sewer lines at his house for the reception after his daughter's wedding to her girlfriend. And he didn't even offer to help, or anything. Just "would I be willing to come take care of this."

Ironically, in South America anyway, the houses that aren't garbage are built like fortresses. Solid block and cement and steel. What little wood is used is thick hardwood for the roof rafters and doors. Upper floors are cement and steel, not plywood on wood joists. There could be a massive fiesta upstairs and you wouldn't know it downstairs. I guess they are designed for the owners to survive the periodic uprising.

I have a liberal acquaintance like that. He won't tackle the most trivial DIY jobs, I mean things that would take 10 minutes. If it's more involved than changing a light bulb, forget it.
It's easy to get into that position. Once you start paying people to do that kind of stuff you start to lose the ability to do things. I can easily afford to pay other people to, say, replace a broken disposal (took me almost an hour last week because I didn't have the right connectors). But I don't, because I don't want to be the kind of person who has to call the plumber when the sink clogs.

YouTube is great, I did a couple of repairs on my MiniVan that I would normally have a mechanic do.
I even had a sewer backup and rented a snake and saved myself two hundred dollars, all thanks to watching some videos on YouTube.

And if not block, then brick, but again, un-reinforced.

I want a safe space, but I'd have to take PTO and drive home so I will pass. So much fun trying to figure out the path between old boss' convoluted systems which AFAICT amounted to "I own this domain and can never be fired" and the new software engineers modernization. New guy is brilliant and wants to pass things off but he assumes more knowledge than I have. He went home sick today so I will not be updating anything until we are both at work and I can get a personal tutorial. Old boss got moved to special projects which fit his expertise for deciphering weird binary data formats as well as got him out of the way so progress can happen so at least there is that small comfort.

My sister in law went and purchased a refurbished top loader because all the new ones have the save water and electricity and are crap now.

The biggest problem with tackling a job for the first time is often figuring out how things are held together (e.g. automobile consoles).

Back when I sold paint I always recommended primer, but most people skipped it and were happy with the results. And if they are spraying it on, it should not take them too long to set up and tape etc.

I've done this several times, but the real problem is when your jack is maxed out or sinks into soft ground. Luckily, I have a shovel handy to dig out the gravel/soft asphalt under the spare tire to slip it into place. Shit happens.

Impact wrenches and lug nuts: These tire places have flunkies working for them. Your average 1/2" drive impact wrench is rated for 90 psi. Your average two-stage compressor runs at 150-175psi.
Said flunkies tighten your lug nuts by running those 1/2" impacts directly off that 150psi pressure. And hammer it. And the don't follow a proper tightening sequence. They put the wheel on, then tighten the first nut down, hammering it.
They will warp the rotors on shit. This happened to my father's Crown Vic when he had some new tires put on.
A fellow I know who used to run a tire place in town explained to me his hair pulling over the idiots he had working for him (his labor pool is all idiots, he lamented). He'd had to pay for one too many new set of rotors.
He ended up putting a master regulator directly off the compressor, keeping the downstream main air feed at about 100psi. This is bitch because it's good to have full pressure for other things, as well as loosening tight lug nuts.
For truck tires and the big shit, he had some other feeds, as needed. But he worried about that.

A benefit to DIY, and this is something Adam Carolla preaches, is that it gets you in the habit of fixing things and doing new things.
I was clinically depressed when I moved into this place and had to do it all on my own. There's something empowering about taking control of your living space and making your immediate environment better.

All you have to do with an impact wrench when tighening, even with full pressure, is just be careful. Don't hammer it, and they all have their own little regulator knob on the end. Just turn that down when tightening.
