Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread 11/20/16Welcome to my first post as an official Cob-logger. Thanks to Ace for the privilege. It's that time of year and even here in Jacksonville, Fl, where it was nearly 80 degrees yesterday, we will experience our first freeze tonight. Don't worry too much about us, we'll be back in the 70's by Tuesday. For the rest of you who are settling in for the long, hard Winter...
So, I listened, barely, to our President's speech from Peru. Is it just me, or is he the most insecure man in the world? He reeks of it. Do the citizens of other countries see it too, or are they buying into his bullshit? ICYMI, he literally blamed the two-per-state Senate for the Dem losses in Congress, "geography", he said, and then went after the Electoral College: ""As long as Wyoming gets as many Senators as California..." I'll admit that I don't really know the laws which keep the electoral college in place nor the manner in which it might be destroyed. This article, from City Journal, made me feel a bit better: The Electoral College Will Remain"A successful candidate for the distinguished office of President of the United States," Alexander Hamilton wrote in 1788, would need to achieve the "esteem and confidence of the whole Union." A direct popular vote would narrow the number of citizens whose votes the presidential candidates campaigned for. Candidates would focus their time, energy, and money on the most populated areas. By contrast, under our current system, presidential candidates seek the support of dairy farmers in Iowa, coal miners in Pennsylvania, seniors in Florida, and students in Colorado.Wut? Hamilton? The Hamilton? The dancer and singer about which the Broadway play was based? No way! He was in government? He APPROVED of the Electoral College? I refuse to believe it. What do you MEAN he helped create it? *Harumph* Well, that's only because he never had a chance to vote for Hillary Clinton. Without any attempt at a segue here, I'm jumping topics. From the NRA, a new infographic re the keys to shooting accurately. Oh! There's my segue... If Hamilton had only had access to this, posted at Wide Open Spaces.. And speaking of Twitter, if you aren't following Bill Kristol, you should be. It's good for a few laughs now and then. His squirming like a worm to try to finagle himself into any sort of relevance is entertaining. Get ready to "D'Awwww"!!
Elsewhere in the world, those whacky Libyans: 16 dead and 50 wounded According to residents and local reports, the latest bout of violence erupted between two tribes after an incident in which a monkey that belonged to a shopkeeper from the Gaddadfa tribe attacked a group of schoolgirls who were passing by. The monkey pulled off one of the girls' head scarf, leading men from the Awlad Suleiman tribe to retaliate by killing three people from the Gaddadfa tribe as well as the monkey, according to a resident who spoke to Reuters. Since I haven't been posting football threads this season, I feel I owe you this one, perhaps the most popular cheergal of all last season. Your belated Halloween treat. Did I mention there's a gif? Okay, that's it for this ONT. Have a lovely evening, and play nice with each other. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

We know that Hillary got around 2-4M votes from illegals...mostly from CA. Because of the EC, and the fact CA is a one party state, it doesn't really matter for presidential elections that CA pollutes its vote totals. Remove that protection though, and on what grounds should the other states ignore what CA is doing? Hell, the EC might have just saved us from something rather more serious then a mere crises. About twenty years ago I was out having a smoke on my front steps, about this time of year and it was cold and drizzling rain. I thought I could hear a small kitten yowling. I walked up about a half a block and across the street and there it was out in the middle of a neighbor's front yard. I went to pick it up only to get blocked by a rather large dog who was apparently protecting the kitten. I knocked on the neighbors' door but it wasn't their dog, but rather their neighbor's across the street. So I went across the street and got them to call their dog off. I picked up the kitten who was very cold and wet and took him home. My wife at the time was sitting in a large stuffed chair in the living room reading something. She promptly dropped the kitten down the front of her sweater and withing seconds it was purring up a storm. We bottle fed it for awhile and had it for several years. It had it's affectionate moments but always had a rather unpleasant personality, but I'll never forget how it reacted to my wife that night.

The real attack of the Electoral College is being done on the state level. The effort is to change the state laws such that if the popular vote is won by a specific candidate, then the Electoral Votes of that particular state would be levied to that popular vote winner. This approach circumvents a change in the US Constitution.
If you want the hair on the back of your neck to stand of straight...check out how many states the movement taking this approach have already exploited. They don't need this to occur in every state. Only a handful more gives them the total needed for a foolproof majority considering that NY, Illinois and Califorinia's Electoral votes are already in their pocket. There are a number of Republican leaning states with democrat controlled state legislatures. Then of course, there are those states that are solidly democrat which are no-brainers. What this does is takes those states off the table permanently (Mass, VT, ME, Maryland etc.) because California and NY can significantly relax their voter fraud laws to acquire all the popular votes they need to guarantee a popular vote win. This is a very real problem is the democrats are able to gain minor majorities in enough state legislatures... Posted by: Orson at November 20, 2016 10:59 PM (bHUfw) 101

I had one guy at a dog park talking about differences between the nose color of the pits. One was those with the pink noses and I forget the other nose color. He said one of these colors are the "nanny dog" pits and the other was the one that always has the problem. No clue if he was just talking out of his ass or not.
What I do know though is that I have seen a couple "problem" dogs at the dog park before and they were definitely not pit bulls. Posted by: buzzion at November 20, 2016 10:41 PM (bMG0w) Tendencies toward certain behaviors are bred into dog breeds. When you get a purebred dog you need to understand the tendencies of that breed and know how to deal with it. I went from a Shetland sheepdog to a beagle. A Shetland sheepdog is a smart little dog that wants to do what you want, easy to train. A beagle just wants to chase after rabbits and squirrels, not very interested in what you want her to do. If you get a beagle and expect it to learn as easily as a sheltie you will be disappointed. People who get pit bulls, or other fighting breeds, need to understand that they must be strictly trained. My next door neighbors have a pitbull that is a sweet, well behaved dog. On the other hand, some of the dumbest, laziest dog owners I've ever seen have owned pitbulls. And any breed will have some dogs that have bad personalities or bite because they've been poorly trained. Posted by: nerdygirl at November 20, 2016 11:19 PM (+lVUW) 148
114.....they're talking about the national popular vote...the candidate who gets the higher number of popular votes nationally will get the EVs of these states regardless of who actually won the state. Which is why Cali and NY are running up the totals with votes of questionable origin.

We got adopted by a Staffy for a few months. Came home one night and he was loitering in the driveway. Had a collar on him and was likely abandoned in the metro park next door.
Next day, he was still loitering. Would not come to any men, but would approach the women folk. He hovered near me all day as I did yardwork. End of day, I sat on the ground and he crawled in my lap. Big baby. Sadly, he could not coexist with our cats. Found him another home after losing one. Got along great with Dexter, our male Dachshund. Dolly, the Britanny, hated him, though. We ended up finding him a home. Family with a pair of pits. Posted by: Iron Mike Golf at November 20, 2016 11:27 PM (di1hb) 171

***** I really want a beagle so badly for a friend for my Dane but I think their personalities will clash and the beagle will fight constantly to be the dominant one. Beagles are so cute! I know, not the best rationale for picking a dog breed. I want a bloodhound too, but their personalities sound like your beagle where you get ignored a lot. It went cold as death today in Toronto and around the "horseshoe" of western Lake Ontario, Barb, but no snow. Crap-load of snow north but not here as Toronto's also in a sweet spot for air flow, usually avoiding the worst of it. (And unlike Buffalo and region, we're on the right side of the lake for "lake effect" snowfall.)

Posted by: L, Elle at November 20, 2016 11:27 PM (6IPEM) They're both hounds. Beagles love you and are very affectionate, they just don't focus on you when you are outside. Getting my beagle to go to the bathroom when a rabbit or squirrel has been in the yard is hard. The best thing is to just have a good fence so you can leave her out there for a while. If you take her out on a leash to go to the bathroom you have to keep saying, "Go potty," and she keeps trying to sniff around for animals. I think that that's why people have trouble house training them. They have a hard time concentrating on what you want when you take them outside. Speaking of grandkids and noisome entertainment....
Mrs IMG was wondering about a karaoke machine for our 6 year old grandson earlier in the week. He likes to sing a lot and has always loved toy microphones. Hasty research ensued. He spent the night Sat and found a Christmas catalog. Showed his grandmother a karaoke machine in it and asked what it was. After hearing the explanation, he said it sounded like a LOT of fun. Heh.

Trump was royally pissed at Krispy, and they said he blessed him out on the phone after he won, and the transition was going to be serious. That was what putting Pence in charge was all about. Trump fired Krispy's ass, but they didn't say much publicly other than announcing Pence was now in charge. But Trump gave FatAss a royal ass-chewing, they say.
Bastard had stocked the transition will all his cronies and lobbyist buds. Trump was going to drain the swamp, and Lardo had it already full of swamp swill. Trump was not amused. Illinois lost a US House of Rep seat, due to residents who can flee getting out while the getting is good, so those districts had to be redrawn. Back to Melania staying in Trump Tower. That NY Post article says he if she does, the Trump Tower will become a second WH in NYC. Security will be massive, and all that. SS with the NYPD.
That will be a problem. But I was thinking. Won't this be the case anyway? Trump Tower will be one hell of a target anyway, I'd think. Indeed, every one of his prominent buildings will be. His name on it and that will be a symbols for every anti-Trump protest everywhere, not to mention terrorists and all that. I expect that security around Trump Tower is going to be a bitch no matter what. Oh, there's another story. The new Trump International Hotel in D.C. All the foreign diplomats are falling all over themselves to come stay there. They are dropping massive coin. They quoted one Asian diplomat, off the record as saying, "It would be very rude to come to his city and spend money with his competitors, no?" Shit weasels, the lot of them. The idea behind it is to go around the need for the constitutional amendment. The state legislature agrees, by vote, to appoint electors who pledge to vote for the winner of the "national popular vote". When the number of states signing that agreement gets to a majority of the electoral votes, 270, that kicks in (those signing don't have to do it until a majority is reached). Thus, 270 or more electors, from the individual states, agree to vote for the winner of the popular vote.
That is about 190 votes so far, I think. If it gets close to 270, then things will get interesting. There will be challenges to it. Just what the hell is the "national popular vote". That depends on 50 separate elections in 50 states. What if the other states do away with their own popular votes (which they can, of course) so as not to participate and give numbers. Who counts? I can see all sorts of challenges to this. Where they will go, I don't know. A states rights argument is if that what the hell these states want to do, then they can. Help me resolve this interpersonal dilemma:
Many many years ago I was friends with a guy, whom I had known since I was a teenager. Then, about ten years ago, I could no longer tolerate his many personality flaws, and ceased being his friend. But he couldn't grasp this concept, and kept trying to act like everything was normal, so in order to drive home the message, I had no choice but to go "no contact" with him. Never communicated with him, never returned any calls or emails from him. After a while, he got the message. In the intervening tens years, I accidentally ran into him on two separate occasions, and both times acted polite and friendly, but managed to excuse myself quickly and reverted to "no contact" afterward. Amongst his many personality flaws was that he was an incurable "loser" -- everything he attempted failed, everything he touched turned to shit, every "opportunity" he jumped at turned out to be a scam, etc. As a result he was often broke. Anyway, I haven't really been in touch with him in a decade, when out of the blue a few hours ago I get home and find a message on my answering machine. I play it back and it's from -- him! I was pretty shocked that he even remembered my number, much less had the gall to call me. But the message was -- well, maybe "unnerving" is the right word. I'll try to transcribe it here verbatim as best I can: "Uh, Z, hi, it's me, X. Um, I'm down here in Mexico and I've got something really serious I need to talk to you about. It's extremely important that you call me back. I am relying on you. I'm going to read you the full number and country code and repeat it so you get it right. [Recites Mexican phone number very slowly, twice.] Please, please, please call me back. This is very serious." Wow. So -- what the heck do I do? The answer, I suppose, is partly dependent on how much I hate or like this guy, and the exact reasons for going "no contact." Without going into too many specifics: 1. We started a dot-com venture together that was very promising but which he disastrously torpedoed with broken promises and lies, causing the whole venture to collapse; 2. He committed various moral malfeasances against other people (not against me), which I so strongly disapproved of that I felt I couldn't remain his friend. I thought this guy was out of my life forever, until I just got this phone message. My gut reaction is to just delete it go about my life as if I had never heard it. But like a classic manipulator, he was so intentionally vague on the details that I'm almost curious to call him back just to find out what the heck is going on. I could easily see him going broke in the US, fleeing to Mexico where he might imagine he could "live cheaply," but once there going even more broke and ending up in debt to "the wrong people," who are now threatening him. Or some crooked Mexican cops have him locked up and are demanding a bribe to let him out of jail. Or something similarly distasteful. In fact, I can't imagine a valid non-distasteful reason for his call -- which is why my gut reaction is to stay far far away, and let him suffer the consequences of his own fateful life-choices. What should I do? Posted by: zombie at November 21, 2016 01:10 AM (jBuUi) 362

zombie : What should I do? Do you have any contacts with his friends/family/etc? Give one of them a call, and ask some generic questions, to see if they know anything. Depending on the response and who they are, tell them the current situation. See what they say. If you're talking to male friends or family, hand the situation off to them. Worst case, call the guy and talk to him. Tell him you will not travel to Mexico, nor will you contact any of his female contacts. Male (like 40 and older) contacts only. You might be willing to wire him a ticket back to the US. Posted by: Arbalest at November 21, 2016 01:23 AM (FlRtG) 380

The logical thing would be it just reverts back to the not-yet-at-270 condition, and they can then appoint their electors as they wish again. Another thing I don't know. If this thing is supposed to be binding (as some interstate compacts are). That is, can a future legislature say screw this, and repeal it. That would be a big thing. I don't think a state can bind itself like that with a fundamental constitutional power as that to choose electors. 367 I bet its going to involve wiring him money and everyone he's asked has told him no.
Posted by: buzzion That, for me, is the key factor: I must be at the absolute bottom of his list of people to call. Surely I am the lowest possible priority for likely "soft touches" in his life. What about all his CURRENT friends? What about all his family members? Etc.? The very fact that he called me at all means that me MUST have already exhausted his Rolodex and gotten a big fat "NO!" from everyone he knows and/or is related to -- and only after they ALL turned him down did he finally resort to calling me, someone who hasn't returned a call from him in ten years. So, I will bow to the wisdom of everyone before me who already said "No," and say "No" myself by virtue of not replying. Posted by: zombie at November 21, 2016 01:27 AM (jBuUi) 385

Posted by: Richard McEnroe Oh, it's him alright. No, I would not trust him to not burn me. Yep, I'd refer it to a Consulate, and leave it at that.
If he's a U.S. Citizen in a Mexican jail, the Consulate will be able to make contact and do their thing, directly. Previous comments indicated web searches to see if he showed up in Mexican Google as arrested, or ??? Probably a good start, but it's also a good stopping point, too. Someone morally obligated to him can do further searches which might well trace back to the searcher. You're in no way morally obligated on this one. Not even close. And if you do feel compelled to send a message to in some way acknowledge his voice mail, and if it's established that he's in a Mexican jail, then communicate only by sending an actual telegram c/o the jail administration. It'll get delivered. Probably needs to say something along the lines of: "Message received, expect no action beyond this telegram." And then just walk away. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon Ehhhhhh, once I call the number, I'm getting "involved," even if I'm calling to say no. Gives me an uneasy feeling. Here's my biggest fear: That he is being threatening by some real nefarious characters down there, and they FORCED him to beg for money from everyone he knows. And once some friend or relative "falls for it," then the villains will begin to target THAT person, since that person is proven to be foolish and wealthy and manipulatable. Actually, T,
When I lived in (outside of) Richmond, I had a good friend named Buck. Best guy this side of the Mississippi. He'd give you the shirt off his back if he was wearing one. One day, his 15/16 yr old son killed him, shoved body in a closet, then took off in his car with a girlfriend. He ended up doing the "suicide by cop" scenario in TN (I think) many hours later. It was surreal. I knew this kid, this man, this family! No one would have ever predicted this - that's what worries me about "iffy" people. You just never know who is capable of what... If you were curious, I guess you could Google "Buck Fraim Powhatan" and get results? Add in some murder terms - I've never looked, but I know there are news articles out there. i stopped at C-4 for the military explosive reference. it was, and is, to me anyway, a humorous way of saying "red neck" without getting into the racist connotations: i'm the neighbor that's always willing to help out, usually has the tools you need, and doesn't take shit from anyone. since i live in *very* blue SoCal, it's a convenient cover that has taken on a life of it's own, since i coined it back in the early mid-90s. The Eisenhower Museum is very well done. It gets some visitors. Plus they have an interesting lecture series. Here's a tale about one of those: In 2014 a good friend of mine (a former F-105 crew chief during his paid for Thailand vacation tour) and I went to the Eisenhower Museum in Abilene Kansas. Richard Cole was one of three speakers on his subsequent unit the 1st Air Commandoes (the US Burma campaign air support and transport air unit) to a special teacher's night at the Museum. He was lucid, grave, and funny, and had driven from Florida for the talk. He flew off the USS Hornet, crashed in China, and finally ended up in Calcutta. There he flew 300 plus missions over the Hump, which defied the odds of survival just there. Then he joined the Air Commando Group and flew in Burma. His unit supported and protected the Chindits. He had a deep well of funny stories about the unit, his commander Col. Philip Cochran, and even Lord Louis Mountbatten. My friend and I asked good, tough questions on military topics like logistics, maintenance and discipline. The teachers all asked "How did you feel when - Posted by: NaCly Dog at November 21, 2016 05:37 AM (u82oZ) 504
Here's another thought on the rogue Democrat Party. There is NOTHING in the Constitution that supports political parties, particularly in crossing State lines to support State and local political candidates.
Why not outlaw ALL political parties. The founders were against them anyway which truly is why there is no mention of them in the constitution and the early elected officials were not members of any party. That is so even if lying liberals like to say the Washington was a member of the Federalist Party. He was not. The federalist party did not really come along until Adams became President (another strike against him). At the time founders said "Parties were considered to be divisive and harmful to republicanism. No similar parties existed anywhere in the world. Thomas Jefferson was much opposed to them. They were right and it would not be much of a stretch to outlaw all parties now. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at November 21, 2016 05:39 AM (mpXpK) 505

Hell we are having hard winter weather now and we still have two weeks before met winter starts. This is prime evidence that another ice age is pending. Because from what have seen in the past several years, and my temperature data backs it up, is that winter is really starting earlier, the cold is getting worse, and it is lasting longer. That is how an ice age begins. Yet we still have a bunch of commie watermelons yelling "Global Warming!".
