The Supermoon was stunning last night. Hopefully everyone took a peak outside last night or early this morning. We were driving at night, and it was so close and so large, and so beautiful. An experience to remember. We saw people out with tripods taking pictures. I wish I had done so.

The age of the painting can have an effect, too. Paint fades and artwork just plan gets dirty. No idea if that applies here, though, but IIRC one art thread a while back had a decent discussion of that kind of thing.

IIRC letting companies sell insurance across state lines was actually brought up in one of Trump's speeches or statements or press releases. Even if it's just lip service, at least it's the right lip service.
My favorite thing, though, is the press release about building the Wall and making Mexico pay for it via remittances. Man, oh man, it's like he was being honest or something.

Insurance isn't the problem. Except that it hides the cost of health care from the consumer. You can remove the individual mandate and drop insurance rates through the floor for those who pay for it, but you still will blow the federal budget out of the water because the underlying health care cost is growing at unsustainable exponential rates.

In addition, the big influx of subsidy dollars and premiums from those who bought insurance because of the mandate created an artificial sense of increased demand. Hospitals and medical groups have been only too happy to accommodate this false demand.
Single example: Amer College of OB/Gyn (ACOG) has vastly expanded its list of indications for a pregnant woman to have a fetal echocardiogram. Probably close to a ten-fold increase in the number of those procedures in the last 3-5 years.

I like much of the work of the Hudson River School. However, I think the color and lighting in the Lorain painting above is more realistic and natural than the Cole sunrise.
As commented by someone(s) above about drab colors, early sunrise colors should be drab in this presentation. In the painting above the eastern sky is brightened in the background but the hills block most early light to the foreground. The near side of the most centered rise is probably lighter then would be in reality but then would not be very discernible.

Right, the 'everyone can have any medical procedure they want and someone else can pay for it' effect of obamacare is also running up health care prices, so eliminating it will undo a large part of the problem.
But remember obamacare got passed for a reason. Even though it always had plurality if not majority opposition in the electorate, health care costs, and therefore insurance for them, were already getting to the point of unsustainability (as a mathematical matter-an industry that bankrupts anyone who uses its product tends to run out of customers). Removing obamacare *at most* gets us back to that point.
And then we either do something through legislation and prosecution for the gouging that's going on, or we let math solve it. Which will be deeply unpleasant for all involved.

What the industry needed was significant reform not government control. Government meddling is the major CAUSE of expensive healthcare. But the Democrats were not concerned with cost. Like all communists they wanted to nationalize healthcare and this was their method.
What Trump and Congress should do:
1. Get the lawyers out of the health buisness. Allow real regulators to get rid of bad doctors and no doctors on the the committees that do that. MAke doctors only liable for real malpractice and only for the amount of actual damages.
2. Allow insurance competition outside of State lines.
3. Keep the allowance of prior conditions because really the insurance companies have mostly allowed prior conditions. They just charged you what it costs.
4, Get the government out of the drug business and put patent time back to where it was originally and do NOT allow drug companies to get patent extensions based on non-changes to the same drug. IOW when the patent expires all drugs become generic.

Well, in order for math to solve it, we would have to roll it all the way back to 'everybody pays directly for their own health care services'. We would sure find out what is "needed" and what is "optional", but I don't see any will in Congress or the Executive to push it back to that level. Providers and insurers as well have such a deeply vested interest in the third-party payer system that I can't see it being uprooted.
We're probably down to debating whether the third-party will be some remnant of a private industry or directly via the government.

1. There aren't very many insurance companies left on the playing field.
2. Fifty different state insurance boards ostensibly regulate the adequacy of insurance plans sold in their state. In essence we used to have fifty different versions of state-approved insurance plans instead of one federal standard. If you allow purchase across state lines, you are abrogating the states' right to establish their own insurance requirements. Kind of counterproductive in a states-rights sense.

I don't know if there's the will to do it, but we probably need to get rid of EMTALA. There's no good reason to force hospitals to treat anyone who shows up in the emergency room regardless of ability to pay, except *maybe* in cases where there's an immediately life threatening issue.

States individual interests can easily be preserved, through licensing, and this is the single most critical idea for reducing health insurance costs.
Life insurance is sold across state lines, with permission of state license grantors, and its comparatively cheap. Let the market decide what needs to be covered, beyond some true minimum coverage, and people will be able to afford coverage again.

Here's the thing: From a practical standpoint, not allowing that places a serious burden on insurers. In a previous life (or so it feels) I worked in an insurance outfit's fulfillment department, where we shipped out all the brochures and forms and other documents all the agents nationwide used. Now this was in a life insurance outfit mostly, not medical, but I have to imagine the massive wall of forms for each of the individual states would be true for them.
Each one drawn up by legal. Specifically for that state.
That's not a small amount of resources devoted simply to keeping up with the requirements for fifty different states.
If each state had its own native insurance companies that serviced only that one state, it would be one thing, but that hasn't been the case in my lifetime, I'm certain. The economics of how the industry is structured sort of dictates consolidation for the purposes of pool health. As such it would be far better to allow what, frankly, is effectively interstate commerce to no longer be encumbered by all those state regs.
Or, you can bust it all down to the state level and see the unhealthy states' outfits appearing and disappearing on an annual basis. I know, I know, but that's the landscape as it stands.

No, that would be the market solving it, as it's supposed to.
What I meant by math solving it, is if we have a product whose cost goes up 10% annually (and it's been pretty consistent over the period of living memory) and GDP (a subset of which funds the government) goes up at best 2%, you inevitably reach a point where you wake up one morning and government spending on health care alone exceeds tax revenues and everything blows up.
Even monster growth of 5% in GDP only puts this off a little bit.
The only solution is at some point if you can't pay, you can't have. We find the will to say so, or goodbye monetary system.

The problem is that the big insurance companies OWN the State insurance commissions. In fact, insurance people SIT on the damn commissions in this State. The insurance commissions routinely rubber-stamp everything the insurance companies ask for.
And with 50 State commissions making rules you have chaos. Besides that, wasn't free trade across State borders why the United State was established in the first place?

Seriously, though, it's not just the insurers, it's the career politicians (in CA at least) who, once termed out of electoral office, line up the help of their comrades to park themselves in some commission seat then turn around and prog up the place.
Interstate insurance markets might not be optimal, but given an appropriate slacking of the Obamacare coverage rules, the ability to buy coverage that doesn't mandate contraceptive and 'gender reassignment' and two years of mental-health coverage because your college 'studies' program shut down might represent a reasonable restraint on these bacteria.
Now the question is whether things become like the credit-card industry, where you get a cage match between Delaware and South Dakota for banks to establish their locus.

Do people want the feds establishing what "insurance" is, and then allowing that to be sold everywhere (ACA)?
Or do people want the states to establish what insurance is and then allow that to be sold over state lines? In which case, if it doesn't meet the "other" states' regs...they won't allow it to be sold there. Which means you have to buy the insurance offered in that state (whose guidelines were established by the people...ostensibly...who live in that state).
Where are these magic savings and/or freedoms coming from?

I think it's been established somewhere that regardless of tax rates, the federal government only ever captures at most 22% of GDP. So if the left got what it said it wanted and Hillary nationalized health care next year, we'd be right at the cusp of the meltdown.

That's the problem with the local hospital. Once the weather gets cold, or the homeless and drug addicts run out of money for a "fix" they come into the hospital to get out of the cold and get some drugs. They may have fried out some of their brain cells, but they know every wrinkle in EMTALA to stay as long as they can.

One (name forgotten) election official said that she didn't expect to find any new (undiscovered) ballots. They were still counting absentee ballots (which were assumed to favor Trump, and Hillary has already conceded.)
I'm guessing that 'Conceded' means you can stop counting; I give up. (English has become difficult for me to understand in these modern times.)

1. There aren't very many insurance companies left on the playing field.
2. Fifty different state insurance boards ostensibly regulate the adequacy of insurance plans sold in their state. In essence we used to have fifty different versions of state-approved insurance plans instead of one federal standard. If you allow purchase across state lines, you are abrogating the states' right to establish their own insurance requirements. Kind of counterproductive in a states-rights sense.

Here is the 37 page position paper which is the blueprint for the Trump/Republican replacement of Obamacare. It goes into great detail describing what each individual issue is with access to health care and costs, the failure of Obamacare and why, and the solution proposed by the Republicans.
It specifically discusses why we must allow insurance companies to sell policies across state lines
This is what is going to take the place of Obamacare and should be read by everyone concerned about the replacement. It addresses Medicare and Medicaid also, along with tort reform that the Republicans hope will now become a reality that was impossible during Obama's tenure.

I expressed myself poorly.
Trump is the first President in many decades who lives smack dab in the middle of a major American city in an apartment. Okay, fine, in several floors of a building he owns.
Living in a yuge, classy like you wouldn't believe building on Fifth Avenue is different in kind than living in a house in the urban sprawl of Chicago.
Think about the Lake Shore Drive shutdown issues but now it's Fifth Avenue every time the Trumps go back to NYC. It's going to LA and Chicago and San Fran all rolled together smashed onto some of the most expensive retail and residential areas in the world in an area with hellish traffic to begin with.
What I'm trying to get to is the poor, poor Secret Service trying to deal with this.

I saw that and downloaded it last night and have been reading it. I don't believe it really does a good job explaining how selling insurance across state lines will improve competition, it just makes the assertion.

Michigan became official two days ago. It was always in the Trump column, and was called by major state newspapers the day after the election The state refused to make it official until the canvassers had finished reviewing and checking all ballots, something that is done every elections. Normally a national election is not this close and for whatever reason, Ruth Johnson decided she was going to hold off on officially calling the race until the canvassers were done, although she said last week that even though the tally would change, like always, there was no way it would change enough to put Hillary in.
Remember, the electoral college doesn't vote until December. No one expects the college to vote for Hillary(and two Washington state electors have said they will vote for Trump and pay the state fine for voting in opposition to their state's results, because of Hillary's FBI investigation, Wiki leaks, etc.) So , to be really really accurate,, Trump is technically the 'apparent" president-elect. He won't be official until the college votes.
With the advent of electronic communication, IMO, the electoral college could vote sooner. The timeline for the electoral college vote was to allow voting results reported by horseback to be gathered , determined, and then for the college to ride to their meeting place to vote, which took weeks to accomplish
It's tradition is now a little outdated.

Well, before Obama screwed it up, NYS had very few individual health insurance plans available. They were very expensive, because they had to accept pre-existing conditions and offer the same price to all. (Guaranteed issue and Community rating) Thus, there were no catastrophic health plans in NYS at all.
The New York State Ledge is controlled by the commies. OTOH, the Connecticut State Ledge is controlled by the insurance companies. (That's where a lot of them are HQ'ed)
Connecticut used to offer catastrophic health plans and had a robust individual health insurance market. If I had had the ability to buy Connecticut insurance, I could have saved a ton of money.
Though maybe I would have had to complain to the CT Department of Insurance, and sue in CT courts, if anything went wrong. (Not sure)
That's how that would work.

It is majestic and literally awesome to me ... awe-inspiring.
I can feel and smell the cool dampness around the creek, and hear the goats chittering at each other. It makes me wish I was right there with them in the painting.
I was raised in the backwoods and natural beauty like that is practically a religious experience for me.
I am also a person who doesn't like abstract, surrealistic "modern" type art.
I imagine those last two statements have a lot to do with my opinion about this piece, and paintings in general.
