Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | A Blow for the Barrel and a Blow for the Ring: Trump Announces Steve Bannon as Senior Counsilor to the President, Reince Priebus for Chief of StaffPutting out the two names at once makes strategic sense; Reince Priebus as Chief of Staff is an offering to the establishment/DC wing of the party, and he of course knows the players in Washington. Offering Steve Bannon as the (one assumes) Big Picture guy appeases those who might be disappointed with the Priebus choice. I don't have much of a problem here. Reince Priebus has never bothered me, and achieved the near-impossible by remaining pretty neutral throughout the primaries in a year that split the GOP down the belly with divisiveness. That kind of political tact and equipose will be useful as a Chief of Staff. Bannon was much more behind the scenes than Kellyanne Conaway, so I don't know what he did in the campaign. I do know, though, that Trump was starting to show some serious RINO clawback with his long-anticipated Pivot to the Left under Paul Manafort's guidance (or, who knows, maybe it was just Manafort and his guys putting out the signals that they didn't believe any of that "Wall" nonsense). But a few days after Bannon came aboard, Trump announced a firm re-statement of his position on the Wall and amnesty. I'm assuming Bannon had something to do with that. One of my main objections to the Establishment wasn't its politics, per se. It was its high-handedness. The Establishment has interests; I don't begrudge them fighting for those interests, as every other faction in the party does. What I resented was the My Way or the Highway approach, with Mitch McConnell vowing to "squash" Tea Party insurgents in 2014. That is declaring war on your allies-- and you cannot declare war on your allies, as you'll turn them into (as the Establishment found out) your enemies. Even if you hate an ally, you still have to reach a mutually-agreeable understanding with that ally. One for you and one for me. The Establishment's demands became, as I believe Michael Brendon Dougherty put it, "immodest." They wanted it all. All for us; you'll get nothing and like it. So I'm not pulling my hair out of my skull that Trump is making gestures towards appeasing the Establishment Wing. This is precisely what I've been urging for three years -- the factions have to agree to give each other something. I don't think the populist wing would be any more successful with an Everything For Us, You'll Get Nothing and Like It strategy than the Establishment was or would be. I never wanted to actually destroy the Establishment, per se. There will always be an Establishment. If you destroy "the" Establishment, you'll just have The Next Establishment forming in three years. I just wanted them dethroned. Not executed -- just booted off the throne and made to wait in the foyer for a while. They can come to the party, but they won't sit at the head of the table, and damnit, they do not always get to be first served. BTW, the headline is supposed to contain an English translation of an Italian expression, meaning one for this faction and one for this other faction, but I may be misrembering it. Google doesn't pull up any hits for this expression. I thought it contained the world "colpo" (blow) and meant something like "one for the military (the barrel) and one for the Vatican (the ring)." Anyone remember an Italian expression about blows to rings and barrels or something like that? Roger Stone: Populists May Revolt if Reince Priebus is Appointed Chief of Staff. Well, maybe some. Personally, on a strictly selfish personal emotional-wellness level, I'm kinda over all the draaaamaa and am willing to be a little bit pliable for a little bit of time. Honestly, Priebus never actually pissed me off, when I was anti-Trump or when I was pro-Trump. At worst, I thought he was a bit weak for not doing more to stop Trump, but he never made the top 100 slots on the enemy list.* After Trump was nominated, he did what he could to get the nominee elected; I can't fault him for that at all. * Actually, I thought he was right to not oppose Trump as many Never Trumpers or partisans for other candidates demanded. I didn't think it was his job to oppose, or support, anybody. That wasn't his job. His job was to execute the will of the GOP, not to declare what the will of the GOP was.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I have no problem with these appointments. If Trump were inclined to go extreme alt-right, at the guidance of Bannon, he'd have done it already.
I also believe that Trump can separate the good and bad in individuals, using Bannon's good advice and rejecting anything too extreme. He may also transition Bannon out within a year after his debt of loyalty is paid. Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at November 13, 2016 05:04 PM (SEXy3) 5
I wanted Trump to (figurately) bring out the flamethrower on the GOPe but at the same time I am acutely aware that he is going to have to work with them if he is to get anything done in Congress. It needs to be done right, and not with his pen and phone.

And there probably isn't a Rep or a Senator in DC that doesn't owe Priebus something since he has been that bridge to the RNC for all of them. I keep in mind that Trump is not a conservative and the best we can hope for is to get him to keep some key conservative promises and then not go to far off the reservation. Maybe Bannon and Priebus will be good for that. Who knows. He has to hit things hard in the first 100 days and the SCOTUS nominee and the tact toward Obamacare will be the key tells. My spidey sense is that these figures are off a bit -- i.e., Trump did better than a 48% to 48% split with Hillary when you look at the cohort percentages. If I'm right, it may be evidence of fraud. Priebus is an interesting choice and he did a great job when the party was being torn asunder. Trump picks Top Guys and must see something in him, knowing the Chief of Staff is the screen. If they have an understanding that it's Trump's platform and stated policies to be executed, But if McVain and Graham get through that screen, bullshit. We will see. The vigorous and relentless prosecution of Hillary could allow us to imprison scores, maybe hundreds, of affiliated scumbag elites. Reince Priebus is tight with both Scott Walker and Paul Ryan. Particularly in Ryan's case, Reince will act as a "get with the program, Paul" guy. Putting out the two names at once makes strategic sense; Reince Priebus as Chief of Staff is an offering to the establishment/DC wing of the party, and he of course knows the players in Washington. Offering Steve Bannon as the (one assumes) Big Picture guy appeases those who might be disappointed with the Priebus choice. ======================== That reminds me of the Blair-Chase kerfuffle during Lincoln's first term. Montgomery Blair (Postmaster General - representing the Republican "Establishment" faction), submitted his resignation during a particularly nasty political confrontation with Salmon P. Chase (Secretary of the Treasury - representing the "Radical" Republican faction). Lincoln was despondent because, without the Establishment Republicans being represented in the Cabinet, he'd have the full weight of the "Radical" Abolitionist wing of the Party breathing down his neck, and Lincoln knew that at the time (1862), the loyal Border States would be in an uproar if that happened. Then the unexpected occurred. Salmon Chase, a man familiar with the dramatic moment, decided to make a gesture - he handed Lincoln HIS resignation letter. Abe snatched it out of Chase's hand and declared "Now I see my way clearly. I have pumpkin in each saddlebag!" On an earlier thread today we discussed how Obama's stimulus bill in effect kept getting readopted each year because we've never had a real budget in any of the Obama years.
This is a big deal and my #1 bullet point on how bad Obama has been. We pissed away an enormous amount of money and collectively we have dick to show for it. And it's gotten little to no MSM coverage. This spending has advanced the interests of The Borg, the collective of BigGov and Academia, and increasingly segments of BigBiz, aided and abetted by MSM and increasingly aligned with the Left. The hundreds of billions that went into this slush fund each year presents a great opportunity for reform, if some spending is redirected and some cut. e.g, Fixing the VA is a rounding error compared to $1 trillion annually. I don't know why when the choice came down to Trump or Hillary, why Paul Ryan wasn't all-in for Trump and touting this issue. Maybe because he wound up being complicit. You're not sure about Priebus but you'd want the Donald to appoint a guy who did what he did at the convention? A Cassius? Recently visited an AZ border town. View from a nearby mountain: -- One side has 3 foot wall. US side is a cattle ranch, Mexico side owned by Drug cartel. -- Other side has now wall - wide open space. Yes, the illegals climb over the mountain and then head into the state ASAP. What I assume was "virtual wall" - DHS vehicles at the top of mountain with heat-identifying radar pointing in both directions (pointing at like radars miles away) scanning. Apparently when a person(s) detected crossing border they send people to apprehend them. I think we can do better than this even if it is not 100% of border covered w/30ft+ wall. Trump will make us mental with the fucking deals he makes with coalitions of all sorts of folks in Washington. Much of what annoys me about attitudes here at the HQ, is that most do not understand the art of deal-making. You gotta give something to get something. The Dems still have power..limited.. yes.. but if you wanna get shit done, you gotta let them whet their beak, using a Godfather reference.. With Baracka in the WH, so many around here thought you could just bully your way into position to getting your way. BO just sat back and laughed. "220 Obama may very well pardon Hillary, but if he allows his spitefulness to cause him to make his first good decision as president and he lets her swing in the breeze, we should be thankful. No pardon for that monster.
The vigorous and relentless prosecution of Hillary could allow us to imprison scores, maybe hundreds, of affiliated scumbag elites. It's not just her - it's all the people we can tie to her illegal acts. We need to root them out in an inquisition-like hunt-and-purge operation. Otherwise it will just encourage her would-be successors to engage in similar illegality." I agree totally, every freaking word there. The problem is the presidential pardon power is absolute, and Obama knows he and his pals will be dirtied by Hillary's prosecution. The only upside is that (a) it will dirty up BHO and (b) finish off any question about Clinton's criminality and corruption, as she can refuse the pardon and demand it not be granted. She won't. The Chinese didn't just build a wall, they manned it with thousands and thousands of well armed troops. "Does Burdick vs US say they can still indite her for whatevah and she has to produce the pardon as her get out of jail card, but can then be compelled to testify (no 5th out)?" If Hillary accepted a pardon pre-emptively, she could be compelled to testify because jeopardy wouldn't attach. The problem is Obama will try to fashion a broad, blanket pardon for "everyone affiliated with the Clinton Foundation" or some such. I don't know how that would be interpreted by the USSC under Burdick, but you can bet Loretta Lynch's staff is hard at work fashioning a blanket pardon that would withstand USSC review if that is possible. I've been thinking about the economic system. If we truly believe that the numbers are rigged and the economy has truly underperformed (as even the rigged numbers indicate), then I think there is a very good chance that a capital improvement intensive program combined with regulatory and tax reduction will bring about an economic and industrial renaissance.

Mostly right, ace. Though a bit over-thought.
Trump appears to mesh well with Priebus on an operational level, and personal level. Trump has spent decades finding and relying on good personnel. I think he recognizes how effective Priebus can be in helping him get things done. What the hell else do you hire someone for? If we want we can make the analysis hopelessly circular by noting that of course Priebus can help in the Beltway via his extensive contacts/familiarity/experience with the GOP office-holders and apparatus. But that's still a pragmatic consideration. I don't think peace offering to any "establishment", per se, was even 1% of this decision. Just had to explain to the boss how, of course, she shouldn't take any "press" stories/headlines about Trump abandoning core campaign pledges too seriously.
As I've said here at least three times already - this is absolutely standard practice, going back to Reagan and both Bushes. Press will distort, or find a non-authoritative source with status but who is wrong or has no special access/knowledge on the point in question, to suggest evil GOP officeholder is backing away from pledges/screwing his base/validating idiotic positions of press/Dems/airheads everywhere. Actions, not words. Supporters can mostly ignore the words, and just wait for actions. Nothing else should satisfy, or dissatisfy, anyone who understands the issues at hand. Well apart from that glorious off-hand comment in the debate, I don't think Trump ever got specific and committed about what to do with post-victory prosecutions, did he? Might have, but I haven't seen it.
That's a key but very difficult issue he's got to deal with. A friend with extensive DOJ and judicial experience told me that there is actually a very low-key and low-energy (hi Yeb!) approach here - to rely on normal processes within an actually functioning DOJ and FBI. There is plenty to investigate in terms of Espionage Act (the "investigation" done was a farce on many levels and completely departed from standard practice), Public Records Act, corruption rules and laws engaged by the CGI outrage, and obstruction of justice activities related to all three. He can say "there may have been serious crimes committed that affect the country's fundamental interests, they must be fully investigated, whatever final actions are taken". These things MUST be investigated to the hilt. The political defeat of Clinton, contrary to what one often hears, doesn't begin to even touch on the impact of these crimes, and not investigating them and holding people accountable and making the facts public would be a catastrophic misjudgment. Mike H., it pretty much already works that way.
Each Schedule C appointee typically submits a standard resignation letter (those who have some sense of public responsibility, or nothing else to do, usually include a statement that they will stay on until a replacement is available). The "plum book" as the listing of Sched C appointments is called, used to be around 2,200. Not sure what it is now. But as many of the savvy people here know, almost the entire federal bureaucracy is generally hostile to good policy changes. The Nixon Admin. was the first to publicly rail against this problem - by now, it's become much, much worse. Posted by: rhomboid at November 13, 2016 07:49 PM (QDnY+) 698

ace way back at #37 stolt my idea (well it's obviously one shared by lots of smaaart people): Trump really, really *should* front-load his bold actions on the most prominent of his campaign pledges. 100 days of furious action.
Best of all, he can start to deliver on several key promises without any congressional help (though he'll seek, and get that, and should of course). Nix the worst of the worst EOs the day after inauguration (this will include the illegal amnesty, which will instantly moot the so-far successful court action against it AND dramatically change the temperature of the water). Direct CBP/ICE/DOJ to being enforcing existing laws. Direct that EPA halt any ongoing process to settle court cases, cease enforcement and rule-making in a host of areas, and begin formulating plans for a retrenchment of EPA activities in favor of state-level environmental regulation. A katyusha barrage. Most of which will be things to which there is *no* actual recourse - things will simply start changing, immediately. Meanwhile, full-court press via Congress on repealing O-care. Too many wonderful ("horrible!!!") things to deal with. Flood the zone. Shock and awe. Carpet bomb. (OK, I've run out of tired cliches) Posted by: rhomboid at November 13, 2016 07:58 PM (QDnY+) 703

Trump: I'm not going to tell you that. Why would I tell you that? Posted by: Votermom the Deplorable @vm on Gab.ai at November 13, 2016 08:10 PM (Om16U) 719
I was reluctant Trump voter (Cruz in the primary, but was always a NeverHillary). I've been heartened by a few things post election - especially the dumping of Christie. Trump is quick to fire people who are producing and replacing them. Did it with the campaign and now with the transition team.

I don't know anything about Bannon, the only one I konw was Peter Parker's rival freelance photographer at the Daily Bugle and ended up as the Hobgoblin. Lance Bannon.
Not fond of Reince, but my main concern for him as the chief of staff is that you need a whip cracking badass and he doesn't really strike me that way. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at November 13, 2016 08:16 PM (39g3+) 721
I think Trump did well. Stahl is an asshole but that's no surprise.

Posted by: TickledPink at November 13, 2016 08:10 PM (L67Wq) I agree with the sentiment, and have my doubts about the pick. However, it's certainly possible this is a 'here's your olive branch now get in line while I steamroll @$#!' type of move. Posted by: What's a Seawolf? at November 13, 2016 08:20 PM (ciTDw) 727
@716
Exactly. It's like with a baseball team. You get a new manager, 1st baseman, Shortstop, and pitching coach, but the culture of losing continues. So, then you get a new Catcher, outfielder, and closer....and the culture of losing continues. And so on and so on, until every person in the clubhouse has been replaced 2 or 3 times. The only thing to do is clean house. And yes, it is a struggle at first, and maybe it takes a couple of seasons, but eventually things will get better and better and better. Yeah but that just shows the opportunity they had this year and blew. Plus, he ran as Sanders' replacement. This was the year the third parties could have made a bold, powerful, and lasting statement. By running an actual, real libertarian.... but they ran a nutcase idiot. What a stupid, missed opportunity from dying party. With all the states legalizing pot I bet their membership halves next year, providing members bother to change parties instead of just never voting. Anybody that thought Trump was going to bring in a totally new group of people with absolutely zero from the establishment or Bush administration just was dreaming.
However, he is more than willing to fire people if they don't measure up. He cleaned house in his campaign what, three times? Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at November 13, 2016 08:34 PM (39g3+) 735
Olive branches are fine.
But, Trump is giving them the whole dang tree. Posted by: TickledPink at November 13, 2016 08:32 PM (L67Wq) ======== Talk to me after he is actually is in office and does stuff. Until then it is all speculation. Posted by: Flyboy at November 13, 2016 08:44 PM (znZgW) 736

Yes, Trump will play nice with the establishment to a certain degree. We know that, and it shouldn't be surprising.
But he's the only candidate who can really shake things up. We'll know more about that once he's actually in office. Posted by: rickl the deplorable at November 13, 2016 08:54 PM (sdi6R) 743

Listen, I hate what Christie did 4 years ago as much as anybody.
That said, Christie was in the Trump corner when it wasn't exactly popular to be so. At one point, he was nearly the ONLY person in his corner. Plus, I want anyone who gets under the skin of the libs. And, very few get under the skins of libs than conservative white fat guys. Especially those in power of a liberal state. Especially Chris Christie. Posted by: TickledPink at November 13, 2016 08:57 PM (L67Wq) 745
OK people, he's not president yet. He's still a quasi private citizen. He really doesn't want the media to know what he's going to do. He'll appoint his people and hit the ground running on Jan 20th. Don't believe the media, ever. They are still trying to defeat him. Let the master work.

Look at it this way: Priebus is there to get what Bannon and Trump want done in Washington, done. If you want to just get someone to stick their thumb in Congress' eye 24/7 why not hire a smelly homeless guy to deal with them. Or start every meeting spitting in their faces.
It's all about results now. Trump will need to use both honey and a hammer. Posted by: Dirks Strewn at November 14, 2016 06:31 AM (iWW0H) 758
Kellyanne Conway should have gotten that job. We would be staring down the barrel of two, maybe three, Hillary Clinton Supreme Court picks if not for her.
