A Blow for the Barrel and a Blow for the Ring: Trump Announces Steve Bannon as Senior Counsilor to the President, Reince Priebus for Chief of Staff
Putting out the two names at once makes strategic sense; Reince Priebus as Chief of Staff is an offering to the establishment/DC wing of the party, and he of course knows the players in Washington.
Offering Steve Bannon as the (one assumes) Big Picture guy appeases those who might be disappointed with the Priebus choice. I don't have much of a problem here. Reince Priebus has never bothered me, and achieved the near-impossible by remaining pretty neutral throughout the primaries in a year that split the GOP down the belly with divisiveness. That kind of political tact and equipose will be useful as a Chief of Staff. Bannon was much more behind the scenes than Kellyanne Conaway, so I don't know what he did in the campaign. I do know, though, that Trump was starting to show some serious RINO clawback with his long-anticipated Pivot to the Left under Paul Manafort's guidance (or, who knows, maybe it was just Manafort and his guys putting out the signals that they didn't believe any of that "Wall" nonsense). But a few days after Bannon came aboard, Trump announced a firm re-statement of his position on the Wall and amnesty. I'm assuming Bannon had something to do with that. One of my main objections to the Establishment wasn't its politics, per se. It was its high-handedness. The Establishment has interests; I don't begrudge them fighting for those interests, as every other faction in the party does. What I resented was the My Way or the Highway approach, with Mitch McConnell vowing to "squash" Tea Party insurgents in 2014. That is declaring war on your allies-- and you cannot declare war on your allies, as you'll turn them into (as the Establishment found out) your enemies. Even if you hate an ally, you still have to reach a mutually-agreeable understanding with that ally. One for you and one for me. The Establishment's demands became, as I believe Michael Brendon Dougherty put it, "immodest." They wanted it all. All for us; you'll get nothing and like it. So I'm not pulling my hair out of my skull that Trump is making gestures towards appeasing the Establishment Wing. This is precisely what I've been urging for three years -- the factions have to agree to give each other something. I don't think the populist wing would be any more successful with an Everything For Us, You'll Get Nothing and Like It strategy than the Establishment was or would be. I never wanted to actually destroy the Establishment, per se. There will always be an Establishment. If you destroy "the" Establishment, you'll just have The Next Establishment forming in three years. I just wanted them dethroned. Not executed -- just booted off the throne and made to wait in the foyer for a while. They can come to the party, but they won't sit at the head of the table, and damnit, they do not always get to be first served. BTW, the headline is supposed to contain an English translation of an Italian expression, meaning one for this faction and one for this other faction, but I may be misrembering it. Google doesn't pull up any hits for this expression. I thought it contained the world "colpo" (blow) and meant something like "one for the military (the barrel) and one for the Vatican (the ring)." Anyone remember an Italian expression about blows to rings and barrels or something like that? Roger Stone: Populists May Revolt if Reince Priebus is Appointed Chief of Staff. Well, maybe some. Personally, on a strictly selfish personal emotional-wellness level, I'm kinda over all the draaaamaa and am willing to be a little bit pliable for a little bit of time. Honestly, Priebus never actually pissed me off, when I was anti-Trump or when I was pro-Trump. At worst, I thought he was a bit weak for not doing more to stop Trump, but he never made the top 100 slots on the enemy list.* After Trump was nominated, he did what he could to get the nominee elected; I can't fault him for that at all. * Actually, I thought he was right to not oppose Trump as many Never Trumpers or partisans for other candidates demanded. I didn't think it was his job to oppose, or support, anybody. That wasn't his job. His job was to execute the will of the GOP, not to declare what the will of the GOP was.Comments

I also believe that Trump can separate the good and bad in individuals, using Bannon's good advice and rejecting anything too extreme. He may also transition Bannon out within a year after his debt of loyalty is paid.

My spidey sense is that these figures are off a bit -- i.e., Trump did better than a 48% to 48% split with Hillary when you look at the cohort percentages. If I'm right, it may be evidence of fraud. Illegal voters won't hang around for an exit poll. They have a bus to catch!

That said, Bannon has said that he will make it his mission in life to destroy those that did not support Trump. Given that Trump has been known to have a bit of a vindictive streak himself I hope this does not come to full flower.

Bannon ultimately was the guy who pulled Trump back from RINOism and affirmed his three core heresies: ending illegal and mass immigration, scaling back trade agreements, and pulling back from military interventionism. You pretty well nailed what was done here, Ace. I actually find this move reassuring, and to be fair to Priebus he remained loyal during the darkest days vs. his Butt Boy Paul Ryan, who the House needs to sack.

Reince Priebus is tight with both Scott Walker and Paul Ryan. Particularly in Ryan's case, Reince will act as a "get with the program, Paul" guy. Because he is particularly close to Walker, who is respected among GOP governors, he can help all of them stay on the same page as well.
I think it's a good choice. It would be much more difficult for Ryan to push back against Trump if Reince is breathing down his back.

Priebus as Chief of Staff is an offering to the establishment/DC wing of
the party, and he of course knows the players in Washington.
Offering Steve Bannon as the (one assumes) Big Picture guy appeases those who might be disappointed with the Priebus choice.

That reminds me of the Blair-Chase kerfuffle during Lincoln's first term. Montgomery Blair (Postmaster General - representing the Republican "Establishment" faction), submitted his resignation during a particularly nasty political confrontation with Salmon P. Chase (Secretary of the Treasury - representing the "Radical" Republican faction). Lincoln was despondent because, without the Establishment Republicans being represented in the Cabinet, he'd have the full weight of the "Radical" Abolitionist wing of the Party breathing down his neck, and Lincoln knew that at the time (1862), the loyal Border States would be in an uproar if that happened.

This is a big deal and my #1 bullet point on how bad Obama has been. We pissed away an enormous amount of money and collectively we have dick to show for it. And it's gotten little to no MSM coverage.
This spending has advanced the interests of The Borg, the collective of BigGov and Academia, and increasingly segments of BigBiz, aided and abetted by MSM and increasingly aligned with the Left.
The hundreds of billions that went into this slush fund each year presents a great opportunity for reform, if some spending is redirected and some cut.
e.g, Fixing the VA is a rounding error compared to $1 trillion annually.

We already have a ground force, one that has been prevented from doing their jobs for the last 8 years.
Catching these guys, even without a wall or drones or other high tech means, hasn't been the big issue. The big issue is that we catch and release many of them because of Obama.

Recently visited an AZ border town. View from a nearby mountain:
-- One side has 3 foot wall. US side is a cattle ranch, Mexico side owned by Drug cartel.
-- Other side has now wall - wide open space. Yes, the illegals climb over the mountain and then head into the state ASAP.
What I assume was "virtual wall" - DHS vehicles at the top of mountain with heat-identifying radar pointing in both directions (pointing at like radars miles away) scanning. Apparently when a person(s) detected crossing border they send people to apprehend them.
I think we can do better than this even if it is not 100% of border covered w/30ft+ wall.

Personally I would build a gravel road and patrol it with Army and NG units who rotate in and out from all over the country.
Then we build the wall in strategically important spots, as you suggested, then fill it in gradually as the need arises.

A wall can be abandoned too. The Great Wall in China, which by the way is not contiguous as Trump said it was, wasn't just a stand alone wall. It was also a fort for Chinese troops complete with watch towers, barracks for soldiers, etc.

True enough. The difference is that the abandonment is obvious. Holes in a 40' curtain wall are not hard to spot. No drones is. No border guards doing their work is. Abandonment of the wall is a clear signal to the American public to demand to know why.

My solution is to combine a wall and other assets. That way, there is no mistaking your intentions.

And that's my point. It's pretty frigging obvious to everyone that Obama has completely abandoned border security. It wouldn't matter if there was a wall a hundred feet high if people knew that once they got to the US they would never be prosecuted.
The Chinese didn't just build a wall, they manned it with thousands and thousands of well armed troops. An administration after Trump could take the same attitude as Obama and a wall isn't going to stop that.
Sure, there are some areas that a wall might be a nice statement but we have the technology available that would make every inch of the border visible.
At the end of the day, it's about attitude and that can always change in the future.

If Hillary accepted a pardon pre-emptively, she could be compelled to testify because jeopardy wouldn't attach. The problem is Obama will try to fashion a broad, blanket pardon for "everyone affiliated with the Clinton Foundation" or some such. I don't know how that would be interpreted by the USSC under Burdick, but you can bet Loretta Lynch's staff is hard at work fashioning a blanket pardon that would withstand USSC review if that is possible.

High School was 29 years ago so the memory is a bit fuzzy. Blackhawk and Riverside were the only schools from Beaver County I remember (Monaca?). Plus, Neshannock used to play Riverside. When I was there there football team was mediocre. Apparently they are pretty good now.

I honestly believe Trump will be an average, at best, President. Agree on all points. It was clear at Victory night that Priebus had done alot and had won Trump's admiration and respect. I was actually surprised at how close they seemed to be. But the Ryan thing still makes me nervous. They have been friends and colleagues for over 15 years. Priebus may be trustworthy but Ryan definitely is not. Fingers crossed on this one for me.

Trump appears to mesh well with Priebus on an operational level, and personal level. Trump has spent decades finding and relying on good personnel. I think he recognizes how effective Priebus can be in helping him get things done. What the hell else do you hire someone for?
If we want we can make the analysis hopelessly circular by noting that of course Priebus can help in the Beltway via his extensive contacts/familiarity/experience with the GOP office-holders and apparatus. But that's still a pragmatic consideration.
I don't think peace offering to any "establishment", per se, was even 1% of this decision.

That's a key but very difficult issue he's got to deal with.
A friend with extensive DOJ and judicial experience told me that there is actually a very low-key and low-energy (hi Yeb!) approach here - to rely on normal processes within an actually functioning DOJ and FBI.
There is plenty to investigate in terms of Espionage Act (the "investigation" done was a farce on many levels and completely departed from standard practice), Public Records Act, corruption rules and laws engaged by the CGI outrage, and obstruction of justice activities related to all three.
He can say "there may have been serious crimes committed that affect the country's fundamental interests, they must be fully investigated, whatever final actions are taken".
These things MUST be investigated to the hilt. The political defeat of Clinton, contrary to what one often hears, doesn't begin to even touch on the impact of these crimes, and not investigating them and holding people accountable and making the facts public would be a catastrophic misjudgment.

I agree with the sentiment, and have my doubts about the pick. However, it's certainly possible this is a 'here's your olive branch now get in line while I steamroll @$#!' type of move.

Exactly.
It's like with a baseball team. You get a new manager, 1st baseman, Shortstop, and pitching coach, but the culture of losing continues. So, then you get a new Catcher, outfielder, and closer....and the culture of losing continues. And so on and so on, until every person in the clubhouse has been replaced 2 or 3 times.
The only thing to do is clean house. And yes, it is a struggle at first, and maybe it takes a couple of seasons, but eventually things will get better and better and better.

This was the year the third parties could have made a bold, powerful, and lasting statement. By running an actual, real libertarian.... but they ran a nutcase idiot. What a stupid, missed opportunity from dying party.
With all the states legalizing pot I bet their membership halves next year, providing members bother to change parties instead of just never voting.

That said, Christie was in the Trump corner when it wasn't exactly popular to be so. At one point, he was nearly the ONLY person in his corner.
Plus, I want anyone who gets under the skin of the libs. And, very few get under the skins of libs than conservative white fat guys. Especially those in power of a liberal state. Especially Chris Christie.
