NFL Considering Reducing Commercial Time During GamesWhen an organization proposes reducing the amount of money it's taking in in order to buy back some goodwill, you can take that as a sign they're really worried about having lost all that goodwill. As Ratings Plummet, N.F.L. Considers Reducing Ads and Length of Games By KEN BELSONNOV. 10, 2016NFL viewership is down double digits this year. Goodell called the falling ratings a "cyclical" phenomenon. In related news, Joe Thiesman has only minor permanent impairment to his leg due to the "cyclical" leg-break Laurence Taylor inflicted on him. Goodell is also saying that Trump's election has made things difficult for him at home. Asked whether his job was harder with Trump's ascension, at a DealBook conference in New York, Goodell pivoted to how it challenged his home life. "It makes my job harder at home, too," Goodell said. "I have twin daughters and a wife, so I have to explain that to them. So, that's yes on that front."Please let me give you money in the form of direct access to my brain and precious hours of my short life. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

There's more actual playing time in a rugby match (which typically runs 90 minutes start to finish) than there is in an NFL match that goes over three hours. Lots of stoppage and silly things like touchbacks. Too many dropped passes.

Trump's Victory Is a Pivotal Turning Point in Human History
This was not only the most important election of our lifetimes, but ranks as one of the most significant events in recorded history, on par with the French Revolution or the fall of the Berlin Wall. And I'll tell you why. Our entire lives are saturated with leftist propaganda. We non-progressives see it everywhere and complain about it incessantly -- because it is ubiquitous. In fact, much of our waking hours is spent commenting upon and then combatting the endless relentless leftist slant to everything in modern society: the entire preschool-through-PhD educational system; the entire media/entertainment complex; the social environment; and, increasingly, the governmen itself as an agent of coercive progressive propaganda. Every movie. Every TV show. Every news broadcast. Every lesson in every classroom. Every social signifier in the public. Every poll. In ways large and small, overt and covert, it is all saturated with progressive ideals, whether you realize it or not (and by now most people realize it). We pull our hair out about it. We scream and cry in protest. We rail futilely against it. (Or at least we thought it was futile.) But what is the purpose of all this propaganda? Well, as formulated first by Antonio Gramsci and then later the Frankfurt School, the ultimate goal is to change the underlying nature of society to pave the way for an eventual socialist utopia. But -- here's the key, and the point behind Gramscianism and "stealth communism" -- the revolution, they realized, should not and can not be a VIOLENT revolution, but instead a quiet revolution in which the populace imposes communism on itself willingly -- what Bernie Sanders correctly called "democratic socialism." Violent communist revolutions can only ever succeed in what were called "peasant societies" -- czarist Russia, impoverished rural China, Cambodia, etc. -- but never succeed in industrial countries, as Marx had incorrectly assumed. (Marx thought that the first two countries to have a communist overthrow would be England and Germany, because they were the most industrialized nations in the 19th century and thus had the greatest number of disenfranchised factory workers. He was wrong.) Anyway, to get to the point, the entire purpose of 60 years of slanted media and slanted news and slanted education and social pressure and brainwashing and deception and indoctrination -- all of it, everything we complain about every day, all days, for years and years and years -- the purpose of all this is to get people to vote for the most left-wing candidate in each presidential election. Because, as noted above, this entire theory is based on stealth communism, self-imposed, democratically elected socialist government. We see the results of these decades of indoctrination in the college students of today, who are all so left-wing by default that they see standard old-school Marxism as too old-fashioned and conservative. That is how left-wing they are -- and yet they think they are middle-of-the-road, from their vantage point. So it had seemed that these decades of indoctrination had been resoundingly successful, and that the US electorate had swung wildly to the left, never to swing back, just as the Gramscian brainwashers had been implementing for the last 50 or more years. They don't brainwash people to engage in violent overthrow -- because that is known not to work in a middle-class first-world country. We're too comfortable as a nation for that to ever work. Instead, they brainwash people to VOTE as their socialist mentors tell them to vote. And it has looked since 2008 and ever since that this strategy has reached a tipping point of success from which there was no return -- no conservative could ever win another presidential election, since with each passing year, the population was getting younger, more radical, more brainwashed, etc. And then November 8 2016 happened, and BOOM: It was all revealed to be a lie. Not only has the relentless indoctrination failed, but the general impression that the indoctrination had been successful was itself a gigantic meta-deception. All the polls, which were intended to convince everyone that Hillary was inevitable? ALL LIES. All the chatter and imagery that America had forever swung Democratic? ALL LIES. It doesn't even matter what Trump's actual political beliefs are. All that matters is that he was The Designated Enemy and yet he won resoundingly. This election didn't merely expose the failure of six months of campaigning by the Democratic Party. This election exposed the failure of SIX DECADES of leftist propaganda to have any cumulative effect at all. And the earthquake extends deep into the future as well. Thanks to Trump's history-shattering victory, we know know that the Gramscian model and the Frankfurt school model DON'T WORK. Every single thing the Left has done since the 1940s has been catastrophically wrongheaded and misconceived. It has all backfired. Which means that going into future, when they will (as they surely will) continue their failed Gramscian strategy on autopilot, IT WILL ALL BE FOR NAUGHT. The Left has to now go back to the drawing board and come up with an entirely new playbook. And once they do, it will surely take decades to implement. But the best part? The left doesn't understand any of this, and they WON'T reformulate their playbook. They will stick to the same failed script, as we have already seen just in the last few days. Years from now, and likely even decades from now, the Left will STILL be trying their stealth (and not-so-stealth) propaganda/indoctrination/bullying efforts, and they will CONTINUE TO FAIL, because these techniques only work if the victims DON'T KNOW they being propagandized. But the public has become much more sophisticated. We now do know. And we can never un-know, once our eyes have been opened. That's why Trump's victory is Earth-shattering -- it completely unravels the leftist playbook, past present and future. To such an extent that we're playing an entirely new game now with new rules. But the left refuses to acknowledge this, so they will continue to play the old game. So they will lose. And lose. And lose. And lose. Over and over and over again until they either wise up or give up. My money is on the latter. Posted by: zombie at November 11, 2016 03:33 PM (jBuUi) 18

If the NFL had half a clue they'd require the game to be run in a picture in picture, or split screen for commercials. If the commercial peeps had half a clue, they'd agree to that.
Then, people would actually watch the game during commercials and some of that commercialing would be more effective in its purpose. And, it'd stop those idiotic "commercial time out"s. Posted by: Grimmy at November 11, 2016 03:38 PM (m+qrc) 59

I got out the map, picked a town in KY, got a valid address and telephone number (public address so no one at home is bothered), plugged all that in and wrote this: I suggest McConnell use the nuclear option. If he does not move conservative justices through the senate, and does not pass a budget, and does not eliminate the ACA, I will become a bundler for whomever his opponent is next. I don't care if Karl Marx himself runs against Mitch. Posted by: davedaveadavarf at November 11, 2016 03:42 PM (0+srV) 92

Having a commercial between the kickoff and the first play of the drive was tolerable when there was often a kickoff return.
Now that the NFL is marketing to women and we're pretending to care about player injuries, we've changed the kickoff rules to reduce the amount of times the most dangerous (and exciting!) play in the sport happens. So we watch a team score, a commercial, a kickoff kicked through the back of the endzone for a touchback, another commercial, then the first play of the drive. It's agonizing, and all because we have to pretend that these men are going to cure cancer when they retire. Breast cancer only, of course, that's the only one the NFL cares about. Evil never rests. Totalitarian tyranny will manifest itself in one form or another as long as man walks the earth. It is just human nature. We will have to constantly fight these battles. But here's hoping that the long - and I mean VERY long - arc of history that started with the Renaissance, then the Scottish Enlightenment and the American Revolution up until today will move us further and further towards real human progress. Yes, there will be intermittent periods of unrest. And with Islam ascendant and the proliferation of nukes, these might turn into Armageddon. But, minus that, the long arc hopefully favors human progress. PLEASE G-D. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at November 11, 2016 03:43 PM (mbhDw) 102

The spokes idiots on the sports sites are still denying that the BLM protests have turned viewers off.
The same spokes idiots are all over any accusations of spousal abuse and insisting the NFL do something. But maybe fans are unimpressed with the NFL doing the same kangaroo court thing that universities are doing--to be accused is to be guilty. Maybe they would prefer--all things be equal--to see the NFL leave crime to the criminal justice system. >>Yep. I agree with your assessment of the significance of this election.
I do not, however, share your optimism. Is this a real turning point or just a bump in the road for the Left? What we have been living through, the same thing that Europe more openly adopted, was a result of the Frankfurt School doctrine that oozed out of post WWII Europe. It was a neo-Marxist view of how society should be organized and the resulting government. The tactics employed are different in different locations but it all sprung from the same seed. This is precisely what Hayek tried to warn Europe and then the US about most notably in The Road to Serfdom. When people say that the US was trying to copy the European model, this is why. That's why I'm so happy about this election. As Zombie noted, Trump's election throws a gigantic monkey wrench not just into their short term plans but more importantly the long term ones. Hillary's election might have cemented those changed forever. Now, there is hope of returning to our founding principles. The left may not get the opportunity to try again for decades. So I can get on my soapbox again.
Roger Goodell is what is wrong with the NFL. Everyone is talking about the cheap shot Richard Sherman took at the punter for the Bills the other night, which took the guy out of the game. The NFL fined Sherman $9,000 for it. Sherman, who is actually quite intelligent and speaks very well off the field( on the field , he screams in ghettoize , which his dreads, etc.) posted an "op ed" either on facebook or on ESPN after the fine, in which he talked about how the league doesn't follow any definite rules about anything anymore rather it is all opportunistic PR. He said he was fined for what he felt is a legal, practiced play technique because of the outcry from fans and because he is a high profile player. (By the way, there was no flag thrown on the play by Sherman) And Sherman is right. Goodell waits to see what the fans think and then acts. Punch your girlfriend in an elevator and drag her unconscious body out of it? Mmm, well two game suspension, no wait, everybody is screaming , so 4 game. I won't get into deflategate. And now, Goodell continues to have "investigators" slinking around Ezekial Elliott because Goodell is waiting to see if there is some groundswell of SJW'S who will keep jonesing that Zeke actually did beat his ex girlfriend in a car last March despite the fact that the other three occupants in the car told police no such thing happened, the Columbus police department closed the investigation and Elliot'ts lawyers have said they have text messages from the ex threatening to ruin Elliott for breaking up with her. My understanding is Jerry Jones has had in the face words with Goodell about this situation. I hope the owners man up and fire Goodell. Posted by: Jen at November 11, 2016 03:52 PM (Q3CCX) 210

He was virtue signalling. If he declined to comment, Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk would write a bunch of articles about how this meant he probably supported the racist Trump. Florio would then write even more articles about how unnamed players were upset that the Commissioner supported a racist. ESPN would then pick it up and run with this. "As Ratings Plummet, N.F.L. Considers Reducing Ads and Length of Games"
Duh. By definition, taking out some ads will reduce the length of games. And the actual "game" is still exactly as long. But let's go further. Let's cut out the over-production of the product. We don't need a video package of meaningless statistics inserted into every other play. We don't need to hear five different broadcasters goofing around in the booth; we actually have live video of the game to see if you'd just show it. We don't need chyrons and tweets and blinking lights and music and dancing bears and fireworks... just show the fvcking teams on the field. How's about concentrating on the actual, live game as opposed to every other thing you can think of to break the continuity? This isn't Fantasy Football Video Time. It's supposed to be the NFL. I mean besides it also being a commercial delivery system. Oh, wait... I think I see the problem. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at November 11, 2016 04:01 PM (1CroS) 276

258 Frankly I don't know how any American loving person can watch the NFL after what the NFL allowed the players to do. This is not a freedom of speech issue. The NFL is an employer . No other employer allows their employees to make spontaneous political statements on their time and they definitely don't let it continue even if they let it slide the first time. One of the resasons is that it can damage the business. And surprise , the NFL is hurting.

Asked whether his job was harder with Trump's ascension, at a DealBook conference in New York, Goodell pivoted to how it challenged his home life.
"It makes my job harder at home, too," Goodell said. "I have twin daughters and a wife, so I have to explain that to them. So, that's yes on that front." How exactly does this make his job harder? "Dad! You are head of the NFL. Why isn't Hillary President???" "Well... uh, I uh... I can't force people to vote a certain way..." "You need to DO something about this, daddy! That's your job!" "Oh, man. My job just became so hard." None of that makes any sense. What does the election have to do with the difficulty of his job? Kaepernick tanked ratings before last Tuesday. I don't get it. But when wandering across the TV offerings of my cable provider looking for something occupy a few minutes before bedtime, there seems to be games on the major networks many nights of the week, plus the sports networks. Maybe they've over-saturated the market.

Still, we suspected they were probably right of center, based simply on the fact that they made a darned comfortable living (back then, not obscenely rich like now) and the top end was around 70% and they were no doubt getting hammered, income-wise. And because they were tough. And because some of them went on to become Jack Kemp.

AD...if you watch the condensed versions of the games on Youtube they're great. 40 minutes and no aggravations. I love it. Posted by: eleven at November 11, 2016 04:06 PM (qUNWi) 314

And what's with the slut shaming they're doing about Melania Trump? It's weird being a social conservative but no longer being the biggest cultural puritan on the block now that the Left wants to destroy Trump's wife. Posted by: Kensington at November 11, 2016 04:11 PM (7Kbxu) 363

The two Japanese Kanji characters that represent the name of the nation mean "Sun/Origin" which essentially translates to "Land of the Rising Sun," because from China's vantage point Japan is to the East, and thus the place where the sun rises. The way you pronounced those two characters was "Nip-Pon," which when the Portuguese arrived they smushed together into a single word, "Nippon," which for many centuries was the official name of the nation we now know of as "Japan."
As centuries passed, pronunciation rules changed slightly in the Japanese language, and now the same two characters are pronounced "Ni-Hon," or Nihon. Thus, "Nippon" is now considered very old-fashioned as obsolete. The word "Japan" is actually just the Chinese mispronunciation of "Nippon." Weird! Anyway, for a very long time, outside of Japan, the country was known as "Nippon," so when people wanted to have a shorthand word to refer to a person from Nippon, they over time evolved the shorthand slang term "Nip." This was NOT considered an ethnic slur at first -- it was just similar to calling someone from Britain as a "Brit" or calling someone from Greece "Greek." But in WWII, "Nip" because the go-to slang put-down of Japanese soldiers used by Allied troops, and ever since it has been perceived as an insult. To make football more interesting to watch:
1. No punts - you have to go for it on 4th down. 2. None of this "ground can't cause a fumble" shit. You get paid millions to hold on to the ball, so hold on to it. 3. Get rid of: late hit, facemasking, targeting, roughing the passer, clipping, chop block, and pass interference penalties. The players all call themselves warriors, so man up, buttercup. 4. Modified iron man - teams can only substitute at the end of each quarter. If Art Donovan could play with a broken leg, so can you. Again, if you're gonna call yourself a warrior.... 5. All pay is during the season only - each week your team has a game. You gotta win to get paid. Things would definitely get more spirited. 340 Frankly I don't know how any American loving person can watch the NFL after what the NFL allowed the players to do.
===================================== I love America. Research the movies you watch. Any leftie actors? Directors? Producers? What about the TV shows you watch? Any liberals involved? How about the music you listen to? Conservative Christian Praise and Worship only? I do not see why people isolate one area of entertainment over another, and think it is unAmerican to enjoy that entertainment. I like sports. I watch sports. I'm about as American as it gets. Freedom of choice. Virtue signaling is just as bad when it's coming from the right as when it's coming from the left. Posted by: grammie winger - Red, White and Cubbie Blue at November 11, 2016 04:09 PM (bpfzP) ++++ There is a difference. The NFL is currently allowing these America haters to inject their propaganda into the product itself. Most of the people so put off by this behavior would be happy to forget about it if the NFL prohibited the behavior on the field. Even if guys like Kapernick are still in the league and playing the game, nobody would care about the political activities off the field. We just don't want to be forced to have it jammed down our throat if we want to turn on a game. With movies and TV, one can decide to watch even if there are leftist douche bags involved if their politics are kept out. You can watch a movie like A River Runs Through It, narrated by Robert Redford, and not have to worry about his politics. You obviously are willing to put up with the BS because you want to watch your Packers. I get that. But, it is getting to the point where more and more people are deciding it is too much to ignore. 444 zombie, how do you feel about the term 'oriental?'
I think it is vastly superior to 'Asian' and ironically redundant with the term 'east Asian.' I mean, it literally means 'eastern.' But I'm pretty sure it is super racist to use that term now. Posted by: Moron Pundit Words are only offensive to the degree a culture deems them offensive. Of course there's nothing technically wrong with "oriental," but sigh at this stage I ain't going to fight it. In the privacy of on's own home one can (as I sometimes even do) use the term "oriental," hut in public -- because I myself have no power to control the public sphere -- I daren't say it, lest someone deem it "racist." Not that the need to ever say the term ever comes up anyway. In private, I use "oriental" in two contexts: To refer to arts+craft and decorative art from the 19th-century, when it really was called "oriental art." If I say that I want to put some "oriental art" on the mantlepiece, that specifically refers to an antique piece of art from China or Japan. But is I say "Asian art," that means a MODERN artwork from Asia. There's a big difference, and the word "oriental" is very useful in that context. I also use in in cooking, when "oriental" refers to a 'flavor complex" and spices and ingredients from a part of the world and an era, in a way that is not as accurately characterized by any other word. In reference to people however, it never was "genetically accurate" as a term anyway, so I would never use it even in private. Posted by: zombie at November 11, 2016 04:31 PM (jBuUi) 506

I'm not unaware, J.J. I just choose not to let it interfere with things I like. On a daily basis as a Christian, I have to filter out the dross and let the shiny stuff stay. There's a whole Christian lifestyle wrapped around the notion of being in the world and not of it. If I didn't know how to navigate that, my life would be unlivable. I don't live in a Christ-following society. I live in a profane and degraded society, while trying not to be profane and degrading. I can do this. I can enjoy the game even though there are degrading things going on around it. I don't ask that anyone else watch if they don't think it's a good idea to watch. But this screen I have, the one I've lived with for 60 plus years, serves me pretty well and I'm able to make choices that are okay. For me. Not necessarily for anyone else.

It's like they WANT to lose, and they're doing these things on purpose.NOBODY could be that out of touch with the american public, could they?Oh....wait... Posted by: Agent Cooper at November 11, 2016 04:24 PM (1zARK) One thing to be aware of: some elements of the left WANT to lose. Not your garden variety liberal with duck feathers for brains, who are most of the leftists, but rather the hardcore leadership cadre. It sounds paradoxical, but here is their reasoning: if all the protests and movements and such produce results, people have the sense that the system works. But if, on the other hand, protests, demonstrations, movements, petitions, etc. Failed to make any headway, those engaging and will become aggrieved, and will be ripe for communist agitation. This is why, for example, the Reds choose such unpalatable criminals as heroes. They know that a Wesley Cook is a useless thug, that he's guilty as sin, and that there is no way he'll be released. But using him as an icon, they can gin up support for him to support their argument that the justice system is hopelessly biased against blacks. This is why we have communist martyrs (Joe Hill) and other iconic figures ("Mother" Jones), as long as they're no-hopers. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at November 11, 2016 04:42 PM (SRKgf) 543
While we're on the NFL, I've noticed that the Arizona Cardinals cheerleaders have now over-taken the Raider's cheerleaders as the 2nd hottest squad in the NFL. The Cowboys cheerleaders remain firmly entrenched as hottest. The Raiders squad must have changed their selection criteria--the drop in quality is noticeable.

how do you feel about the term 'oriental?'
I used it once...occidentally. Posted by: Mr. Peebles at November 11, 2016 04:37 PM (Mt8T4) I prefer "Chinks" myself. Then there is "Gooks", "Nips" and "Dinks" depending upon where you are geographically. "Asian" is so insulting, like calling someone a "North American". Posted by: Hairyback Guy at November 11, 2016 04:42 PM (ej1L0) 545
529 As long as it is acknowledged that the term "Asian" is utterly useless for describing a group of people or cultures or whatever.
Posted by: Moron Pundit The problem is that the continent of "Asia" does not precisely nor comprehensively overlap with the meta-ethic grouping (i.e. "race") known as "Asians." In reality, for example, 95% of the people of India are genetically "Caucasian", while 95% of "Native Americans" are actually "Asian". It is this disastrous mistaken conflation of geographic Asia with ethnic Asianness which allows for stupid shit like the British referring to all Indians, Pakistanis, and Middle-Easterners as "Asians," when they're not ethnically Asian at all. Clueless NFL.
Viewership is down for many reasons and political correctness is one of them. When the NFL refused to let the Cowboys wear solidarity patches with the Dallas Police Department they sent the message that pro Black PC race bating was acceptable and supporting police was "too provocative". Of course bad Thursday Night and Monday Night Games don't help, nor does the endless stream of commercials. The NFL and Players Association are in bed with 0bama, the media and left run political elite, so people tune out. Posted by: standfast24 at November 11, 2016 06:33 PM (PNFIr) 570

Yeah, I grew up avidly watching the Green Bay Packers in the Lombardi era but I haven't watched a football game since I was a kid. My primary reason is the pace of the games. They play for 60 minutes, but it takes over 3 hours to get through it? That's a snooze fest. Of course the fact that the NFL has now gotten all social justicey only makes it worse, but the fact that over 2/3 of the time the game occupies is spent not playing the game is the main problem for me.

I agree with ace here mostly because I haven't liked "allahpundit"s take on conservatives for a long time. Under the guise of being a "eeyore" or a pessimist I've read him taking cheap shots at conservatives and Trump followers and I think he is only very shallowly invested in conservatism at all: he shows no sign of being a cultural conservative, I believe he's an atheist and his "concerned" criticism seems to mirror leftist criticisms too often for comfort. I don't enjoy his columns and have pretty much stopped reading them long ago, I can get that stuff at powerline.
I've abandoned quite a few conservative blogs over their condescending, self-righteous, defeatist take on Trump. Well, now they've all been proven idiots because I don't see where there could have been any better outcome than the one Trump has led us to, the Senate still in GOP hands, the House, soon the SCOTUS and we won some statehouses and governorships as well to go along with POTUS! So get on board of fuck off, basically. Yeah, it IS payback time. If not now, when? Payback with a vengeance, crush them in the dirt, payback for the IRS, the DOJ, obama, the press and every other motherfucker to abused us these 8 years. Damn right.
