Sunday Morning Book Thread 11-13-2016: There's Got To Be A Morning After [OregonMuse]

Fastfreefall2_525.jpgLibrary of the Spanish Royal Academy of Artillery

(Thanks to lurking moron Fastfreefall for the pic. Lots of history there as this is the library the longest continuously running artillery school in the world. You can see the gorgeous hardwood floors, if you click on the pic for the larger version.)

Good morning to all of you morons and moronettes and bartenders everywhere and all the ships at sea. Welcome to AoSHQ's stately, prestigious, internationally acclaimed and high-class Sunday Morning Book Thread, where men are men, all the 'ettes are gorgeous, safe spaces are underneath your house and are used as protection against actual dangers, like tornados, hurricanes, IRS audits, and having wikileaks dump your emails into the public domain a week before the election, and special snowflakes can't stand the heat. And unlike other AoSHQ comment threads, the Sunday Morning Book Thread is so hoity-toity, pants are required. Even if it's these hideous monstrosities.

Hillary Clinton Will Never Be President

Actually, I have nothing to say about this. I just like typing it.

(h/t Duke Lowell)

Trump Wins!

Now that the dust from the election has settled, and everybody can see that the progressives got their asses handed to them, they have shifted to their 'Plan B' strategy, which is to attempt to delegitimize the election results. Hence, the riots and the 'not my president' high school walkouts and the various anti-Trump Twitter hashtags and other forms of toddlerfits that have multiplied like cockroaches. It's going to get worse before it gets better.

As I am writing this on Thursday afternoon, the FAB currently leads in the popular vote. This is a completely trivial factoid, but if her leads hold, it will become a Dem talking point and flung about indiscriminately by the Dems media allies and inside men as if it meant anything. They tried this during the 2000 Bush v. Gole debacle. It was BS then and it's BS now.

Didn't any of these guys have civics classes in grade school? *I* did. And this is what I remember:

At the time of the American Revolution, when the Founders were hashing out the features of the federal goverment they thought would be the best (and by 'best', I mean 'most just' not 'most efficient'), one of the issues that they needed to resolve was the competition between large states vs. small states. The Founders were concerned that the large states would simply overwhelm the small states in every election, so they wanted to balance that out a bit, and give the small states a bit of leverage so that they wouldn't be shut out entirely.

Thus the Electoral College.

I think the Electoral College is a work of genius. It makes presidential elections more difficult to win, and forces the candidates to earn the support of a broad coalition of states, not just a few populous ones. Without the EC, the president would be elected by a mere plebiscite and nowadays, that means that all a candidate has to do is to carry in a few blue states, 30-35 counties tops, and he can pretty much ignore the rest of the country. Or, back then, all they had to do was carry 2-3 big states, and that would be that.

I tried explaining this back in 2000 to a frustrated liberal coworker who wanted to abolish the electoral college because his side lost the election. You wouldn't believe the blank stare I got.

I thought what I was telling him was just basic civics that everyone knew.

So, with him in mind, this book might be of interest, Understanding Presidential Elections: The Constitution, Caucuses, Primaries, Electoral College, and More by Catherine Jaime. Updated for the 2016 election, this book answers some basic questions:

Are we really casting a vote directly for one of them or for an elector, and what is the difference? And going backwards from November, how did those men and/or women end up on the November ballot in the first place? What is the process of a political party choosing their candidate, through this confusing array of caucuses and primaries that have been held?

This little book walks through the constitutional background and basis for this critical office, and then goes through the nomination process of caucuses and primaries, ending with the electoral college process that completes the cycle every four years.

This book includes Jaime's other book, Understanding the Electoral College.

And all for only $4.99 on Kindle.

And then there's Enlightened Democracy: The Case for the Electoral College by Tara Ross and George Will, does a little bit more than explain what the EC is, but argues for its existence:

Pick up a newspaper and read about the Electoral College. It is a sure recipe for losing respect for the institution. Media commentators are swift to dismiss the institution as outdated and elitist, an anachronism that should be replaced by a direct popular vote. In recent years, this discontent has found a voice as a well-funded, California-based effort seeks to bypass the constitutional amendment process and effectively eliminate the Electoral College through a series of state laws. Such efforts to eliminate the Electoral College are misguided, and this book shows why. Written in straightforward language, Enlightened Democracy traces the history of the Electoral College from the Constitutional Convention to the present. This second edition of the book is revised and expanded to include a new section about the National Popular Vote legislative effort. The Electoral College protects our republic and promotes our liberty. Americans should defend their unique presidential election system at all costs.

California? It figures. A big state trying to out-muscle the small states. I've heard of similar measures in other states, such as the one in Colorado (I think) that wanted to award its electoral votes to whichever candidate won the popular vote. Hello? So you want to sacrifice even the little bit of leverage you have in presidential elections? You really want give your electoral votes according to how the vote goes in California, New York, Illinois, and Florida? A more short-sighted idea would be difficult to come up with.

Method in Madness

So here's something that's been on my "I need to get to this" pile since summer. I probably should get to this.

FBI profiling pioneer John Douglas, in one of his books (I forget which one) discussed insanity and criminality at some length. He loathed the use of the insanity plea in murder cases where the killers clearly used coherent thought and reasoning ability to commit their crimes--thinking and reasoning abilities that proved beyond doubt these killers weren't crazy. They were evil. They were criminal.

Douglas interviewed David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam killer, and coaxed Berkowitz into admitting that there was no ghost dog whispering murderous thoughts into his head. There was only David Berkowitz, a fucked-up loser who got off sexually by shooting young couples in their cars. The 'Son of Sam' craziness was a bullshit story he made up beforehand so that Berkowitz could cop a plea in case he was caught--and he figured he'd get caught eventually.

Posted by: troyriser at August 22, 2016 01:05 PM (OGbEB)

I had never heard of John Douglas, so I looked him up on Amazon. He's written or co-written a number of non-fiction crime books. I'm a bit put off that he allowed himself to be marketed on the book covers as "the FBI's legendary mindhunter" (wth is a 'mindhunter'?) and also "the premier FBI investigator", but the books sound interesting. I'm not sure which one Troy was thinking of, as I couldn't find one whose Amazon blurb specifically referenced the 'Son of Sam' murders, so perhaps it might be this one, Obsession: The FBI's Legendary Profiler Probes the Psyches of Killers, Rapists and Stalkers and Their Victims and Tells How to Fight Back and that self-aggrandizing title makes my teeth ache. The blurb isn't much better:

In this eagerly awaited new book by the international best-selling authors of "Mindhunter" and "Journey into Darkness", master FBI profiler John Douglas takes us into the minds and souls of both the hunters and the hunted. The legendary former head of the FBI's Investigative Support Unit, Douglas was the pioneer of modern behavioral profiling of serial criminals. In "Mindhunter", we followed his development into a modern, real-life Sherlock Holmes as he tracked down the Atlanta child murderer, San Francisco's Trailside Killer, and Seattle's Green River Killer-- a chase that nearly cost him his life

I looked at some of his other books, but as the blurbs all pretty much read the same, I had trouble telling them apart.

Not that there's not any worthwhile stuff in them. It was just hard to get past the self-glorification. I would be embarrassed if I were an author and my books were being marketed that way, no matter what my accomplishments were.

I, too, do not like the "innocent by reason of insanity" defense, and would welcome a good discussion on how we can best assign culpability to the mentally impaired while ferreting out the fakers and the truly evil. Troy's question is a good one: Shouldn't evidence that killers clearly used coherent thought and reasoning ability to commit their crimes pretty much invalidate any kind of insanity defense? Isn't coherent thought and action pretty much the definition of sanity?

Happy Days Are Here Again

The crashing and burning of Hillary Clinton like the Eye of Sauron at the end of The Return of the King has put moron author 'naturalfake' in a mighty good mood. And so his good fortune is *our* good fortune. For he has reduced the price of all four of his Wearing the Cat comic novels to ZERO until tomorrow, Monday the 14th. So now would be a good chance to get them ALL:

Wearing the Cat: Part One: Flaming Hoops
Wearing the Cat: Part Two: The Fox's Den
Wearing the Cat: Part Three: His Golden Time
Wearing the Cat: Part Four: The Black Room

Moron Recommendations

Over on the goodreads group, moron cool breeze recommends the espionage thriller Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews. He says it's

One of the best espionage thrillers written since the end of the Cold War. Many other authors floundered around after the fall of the Berlin wall, substituting drug lords, jihadis, arms dealers, evil corporations, etc. for the old Soviet menace, but it usually wound up feeling forced. Vladimir Putin, unfortunately, is the real deal.

And so is the author:

The author, Jason Matthews, is a retired 33-year veteran of the CIA's Operations Directorate who specialized in denied-area operations. As a result, the tradecraft feels quite realistic, although a few of the plot devices stretch credibility. Amusingly, Matthews strongly resembles fictional accountant/spy Cyril Figgis of "Archer".

Apparently, food figures prominently in this book as there is a recipe in each chapter.

Another comment:

I'm native Russian speaker and can appreciate Jason's mastering of complex Russian expressions, capturing (as very few could) of the meaning of some of the most difficult ones.

Amazon blurb:

State intelligence officer Dominika Egorova struggles to survive in the cast-iron bureaucracy of post-Soviet intelligence. Drafted against her will to become a “Sparrow,” a trained seductress in the service, Dominika is assigned to operate against Nathaniel Nash, a first-tour CIA officer who handles the CIA’s most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. The two young intelligence officers, trained in their respective spy schools, collide in a charged atmosphere of tradecraft, deception, and, inevitably, a forbidden spiral of carnal attraction that threatens their careers and the security of America’s most valuable mole in Moscow.

So I guess there should be a warning for sex scenes. I have no idea how explicit they are.

Books By Morons

Moronette Celia Hayes will shortly have a new book out, the stand-alone novel The Golden Road:

Sixteen year old Fredi Steinmetz longed for adventure and riches. What better way to find both than to follow the Gold Rush from Texas to California, But he didn't reckon on bandits, and robbers, gold in the riverbanks, murder in the streets of San Francisco and the saloons of Moke Hill, a rich cache under a half-dead pine tree on the North Fork, of Mormons and gold-miners, fugitive Fenians, and the Lotta Crabtree, the Faery Star dancing under a glittering golden rain thrown on stage The wild west was never wilder.

The Kindle edition is $3.99. If you pre-order it now, it will be delivered to your device on Nov. 18th.

1 Andrew M Watson, Agricultural innovation in the early Islamic world (Cambridge University Press, 1983)

Many, many books have been written about the Columbian Interchange, where the Old World got potatoes and the New World got the Spaniards. Here, Andrew M Watson is arguing for a Muhammadan Interchange (he calls it the "Arab Agricultural Revolution") where the Near East got about eighteen agricultural products during "Late Antiquity" they didn't have under the Romans.

These include eggplant, citrus-fruit (mainly citron), and sugar-cane. Also cotton, as the one nonedible. Some of these had shown up in the West before Islam. But they weren't *grown* in the West, and weren't shipped in great quantity. Usually they were sold as medicines first. When they didn't work, but tasted good anyway, they were sold as luxuries. If demand spread, the plants would be brought and an attempt made to grow them.

Watson found that all this stuff came from India. Sometimes the ultimate origin was Africa (sorghum / millet); but these were brought to India in antiquity, bred for Indian conditions, and sold west. He admits some of it came west under the Sasanians in Iran (200-600 AD), but not in great quantity.

Watson thinks the technological and economic conditions of the late Roman and proto-Byzantine region were primitive. Even these were decaying. If the Western farmer *had* got, say, a bushel of rice-seeds, he'd not have been able to irrigate them. The Muslim farmer, by contrast, lived under a regime (at the time) more friendly to capitalism and innovation (at least in science). There was also the benefit of a single empire keeping the routes open. So if he heard about a cool trick they were using in Egypt to water plants over that ridge, he could use it.

This book is great; I have learnt a LOT about the origins of foods we all take for granted. It is well worth the $15 I spent at the used bookstore, probably worth twice that much. Sadly it's dated; and the 2008 reissue seems to be minimal, just a new foreword and bibliography. If someone could revisit this after the latest DNA research, it would be worth still more.

There are also critiques, most notably Michael Decker, "Plants and Progress" (2009). But Decker seems to be wrong about the artichoke, and Watson to be vindicated: Clifford A. Wright, "Did the ancients know the artichoke?" (Fall, 2009). See themedievalarabagriculturalrevolution . blogspot.com.

Keep in mind that they do not count absentee ballots in most States unless the election is close. So if they counted all the military absentee ballots I would wager that Scankles also lost the popular vote.

6 Regarding the "Hillary won the popular vote" meme, have they even counted all the military absentee ballots? I thought the procedure was to count them only if their number would change the election results. Meaning they may well still be sitting there unopened and uncounted. They wouldn't change the actual results, but considering military breaks 70% republican, they may (probably) would change the popular vote results. Does anyone know?

7 Pookette is absurdly adorable.

I'm currently reading a book about the lead up to WW1, which usually gets only the most cursory of treatment in your typical history class. I'm not very far into it, but the clusterfuckery involved even in the events leading to Archduke Ferdinand's assassination is almost unbelievable.

8 Previously recommended here by OM and others, I read Mao: The Unknown Story by Jung Chang and Jon Halliday. A very well-researched and detailed work, this book dispels the myths surrounding Mao. He was not a great military leader during the Long March, not a great philosopher or national leader, nor a great friend to the Chinese peasants. One of the few things he was good at was piling up dead bodies to get into power or to stay there. An interesting portrait of one of the most evil men of all times.

I don't know this time around, but I do know military and other overseas ballots were deliberately excluded en masse in the past. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of uncounted Trump votes there.

11 The founders small State vs large concern was the reason for the Senate. The electoral college was primarily because in those days communication was difficult and a long process. Also the founders NEVER intended for a direct election because they did not trust the "mobs". The electors were supposed to be chosen by the State legislatures and sent to Washington for the election.

19 You haven't mentioned the most devastating objection to making the popular vote determine the winner. In a close election like this one (less than 100,000 nationwide, I think), we'd have Bush-Gore-style recounts going on in every county of every state for months as each party tried to find more valid-looking votes for themselves and invalidate more of the other side's votes. It would be an electoral Hell a hundred times worse than Florida 2000 - that was bad enough, even in just four counties in one state. The Electoral College avoids messy recounts in the Presidential contest except in the rare cases like 2000 where the EV difference comes down to one state and that one state is very very close.

(This is not an original argument, but I have no idea who I heard it from - in 2000, of course.)

20 Pookette reminded me: I have had three cats in my life and all were 'reading' cats. The first always sat next to me while I played the piano and pawed at keys. Second sat next to me while reading and chewed the corners of whatever I was reading (found an old book with chewed corners and got teary-eyed). Third cuddles into my armpit and paws at pages until I scrub his head. The first two were very standoffish and didn't cuddle -- that was their version of cuddling. Hey, I missed the pet thread yesterday.

The insanity plea doesn't consider them "innocent by reason of insanity". They are actually admitting that they committed the crime and are seeking to avoid punishment because under the current guidelines they have to be so impaired that they did not understand what they were doing. After Hinkly got off for shooting Reagan most States rewrote their laws to make it more difficult to plead this defense. It has reached the point now that the majority of crimminals who use the insanity defense wind up spending more time locked up in mental institutions than they would have spent in a normal prison if they had simply plea bargained and pled guilty.

28 "Downheartedness was no man's part. A man must stand up and do the best he can with what there is. If the thing he labored to uncover now seemed in danger of stultifying him, could a rational being find nothing to do? If mind failed you, seeing no pattern; and heart failed you, seeing no point, the stout, stubborn will must be up and doing. A pattern should be found; a point should be imposed. Was that too much?"

- James Gould Cozzens, Guard of Honor

It's a pity the novels of James Gould Cozzens (1903-197 are all out of print. Surrounded as we are by little children in adult outfits having temper tantrums and threatening to run away, Cozzens's novels are a bracing reminder that we have to live as adults.

The central characters are professionals of one kind or another, doctors, clergy, lawyers, businessmen. The themes are bleakly realistic: you're going to get a raw deal; you will have to compromise your principles; sometimes all your choices are bad ones. Shut up and deal with it.

Guard of Honor, about three days at a Army Air Forces base in Florida, won the 1949 Pulitzer Prize. I would recommend it and The Just and the Unjust (1942) as the best of his work.

Irving Howe sneered in The New Republic in 1958 that Cozzens was a spokesman for "a civilization that finds its symbolic embodiment in Dwight David Eisenhower and its practical guide in John Foster Dulles." Considering that Eisenhower's kind of civilization has survived and prospered and Howe's has fallen into History's dust, kept alive only by irrational anti-Americanism, I'd say there are worse insults.

Lyndon Johnson once asked Dean Acheson, "Dean, why don't people like me?" To which Acheson replied, "Because you're not a likeable person."

One more reason why Clinton lost. She's very bad at concealing her belief that little people are dust beneath her feet. I look forward with relish to the tell-all books now that she and the whole Clinton Camorra are out of power.

48 Good morning, horde. I read at least one John Douglas book and I'm not sure I finished it. He is so insanely full of himself and really seems to think no one can solve crimes without him. I am going to get the book OM mentioned because it sounds like it focuses on victims and their families. I expect I will end up annoyed after finding that it focuses on John Douglas focusing on how wonderful he is to help the victims' families.

I finished "The Girl On The Train" and gave it three stars on amazon. The pacing was horribly slow, and all of the characters were annoying. I'm sure I was supposed to feel buckets of sympathy for the protagonist and her sad slide into alcoholism but mostly I found her annoying. The author got an extra star for fooling me a very good long while about whodunnit.

"Hillbilly Elegy" proceeds although the election greatly impeded my reading because Facebook. But back to it - I'm sure it will be most interesting.

And the OJ Simpson murder book continues and the prosecution is about to get totally blindsided over the Fuhrman/"N-word" debacle. I just want this to be over but I'm curious about the detectives, if they will have any additional insights I never heard of before.

I'm trying to read "How To Be Holy" by Peter Kreeft but I'm not making much progress. My fondness for murder mysteries does not help at all. I shall have to focus on it being a rather short book, and then I think I will read Kreeft's book about reading the Bible.

I need a bedtime book so I have some that I read, probably in high school, by Gwen Bristow. And I got a new Meg Langslow, new to me, not "new," as I'm reading them in order.

There are a few good chapters in the books (most notably his "Everyone has a rock" theory. However, in the second book, I quickly got disturbed by the more lurid descriptions of various serial killers victims deaths and less analysis of the killers themselves. This seems to be a theme in the genre- which is why I kind of gave up on it fairly quickly.

The reverse is true: Every state gets a minimum on 1 rep. If only fifty reps then Wyoming would have three EVs, as would CA. As the number of Reps increase you would approach direct popular vote (one Rep per voter).

It is 'skewed' towards the states with lower populations. By design it always has been.

83 Hillary's advantage in the national popular vote is just about identical to her advantage in the California popular vote. Or, her advantage in the national popular vote is about equal to her popular vote advantages in Illinois and New York together. (but not all three.)

So, if the issue is the irrelevant popular vote, it's equally fair to point out that Hillary's popular vote win comes from one or two the three most dysfunctional states in the nation. Throw out both Hillary's and Trump's highest popular vote margin and Hillary goes down in flames in BOTH the Electoral College and the popular vote.

122 Gaming the EC is the key to how Trump won the Presidency. Non College White is the largest cohort but had been abandoned the Ds and ignored by the Romney Republicans, and are overweight in the states that get more EC weight.

My call was Trump with 300 to 310 EVs. He'll have 306 when he finally gets credit for MI.

My prediction was based in part on the EC favoring Trump, which wasn't the common wisdom. Smaller states mostly in flyover states get more weight. IIRC a Wyoming vote is something like 2.6x a CA vote.

Hillary was seemingly blind to this and campaigned in a way that ran up votes in places that were already Deep Blue and alienated voters elsewhere. e.g., gun control may have cost her PA (a big gun state outside its cities).

Check out this map, which shows counties where Trump increased the Republican vote compared to Romney

http://www.bbc.com/news/

election-us-2016-37889032

He did so strikingly in counties outside our cities.

A year ago I thought he could win by holding the Romney states and adding FL OH and PA. He also nabbed IA WI and MI. QED.

123 My decision to only deal with constructive reading topics last week was a good one. It helped me retain (these things are relative) my sanity waiting for the election results.

In the same vein, and with the weather finally cooling, I've picked up several cookbooks this week.
"The Complete America's Test Kitchen, 2001 - 2017". I always enjoyed the show and this book lives up to that. It also weighs a ton: over a thousand pages of heavy weight paper.

"The Norman Table" is about traditional Normandy recipes. Most of the original settlers to Quebec were Normans, including my ancestors. I was curious how similar the agriculture was between the two areas. Turns out it is a lot. It also includes an excellent if brief history of the area and describes the foods in a way that had my mouth watering. Also, the pen and ink illustrations were worth the cost of the book.

Finally there's "An Unexpected Cookbook", based on the various meals in Tolkien's books: second breakfast, elevenses, etc. The author has a lot of fun as well as interesting recipes reflecting the food available to Hobbits in the Shire. I got this as a lark but the recipes look pretty good.

126 I went to Robert's Books in Lincoln City, Oregon, this week, and bought $30 in paperbacks, including L. Sprague de Camp's The Golden Wind. I have been looking for that one for a while.

De Camp wrote a series of historical "romances" set around the Mediterranean, all during the Greek and Persian period. The one that was considered the greatest success was The Dragon of the Ishtar Gate.

Very much historical sword and adventure stories, very much not found nowadays, the whole "lusty heroes fighting and winning".

De Camp also wrote a series of light history books as well, the main one was Great Cities of the Ancient world, which is exactly that.

Oh, and Roberts Books has a policy in the Sci-Fi section: they sell books by the sealed box. I believe the policy is that if you get a box of books (at about $.75 per) and don't like the books, you are encouraged to buy another box you might like better.

I said last week Trump would eventually win the pop vote. Wiki still has Trump -600K in pop vote. Trump:60.2M vs Clinton 60.8M

But this guy on Youtube, says Trump won the pop vote by 700K votes, Trump: 62.9M vs Clinton 62.2M.

Obvioiusly Wiki's numbers are wrong in its totals -- it's obvious that millions of votes (for each each candidate) are still not included in Wiki's numbers.

This is another reason why Trump won. The State Media Lies.

138 I'm always on the look out for more insight into the writings of Tolkien, Lewis and Chesterton. The better to appreciate their words. I came across a referenced to a lecture by Peter Kreeft, "Language Of Beauty" about LOTR. (The lecture is on YouTube and is worth the hour long watch.) It is based on observations he made in the book "The Philosophy of Tolkien". This is the first of Kreeft's books I've read but it won't be the last. Only part way into the book but I agree with his approach. And he has a relaxed, even humorous, style that is very enjoyable but doesn't sacrifice the insights he brings. It reminds me a bit of Lewis' lectures. It also reminds me of CS Lewis' "A preface to Paradise Lost", which is a hell of a compliment.

"The suspect is most likely a white male in his late twenties to late thirties, who is not a college graduate, but feels superior to those with advanced education, and is likely employed in a bureaucratic entity, possibly civil or public service. He has a problem with authority and a deep-seated resentment for those that have impeded his progress professionally. ... He may be struggling with lasting relationships and potentially a high functioning alcoholic with alcohol being used as a trigger in the crimes."

Finished my 'El Borak' collection from Robert E Howard last night. Took a break from it after finishing the stories specifically featuring El Borak. The very last story felt like a derivitive knock-off (because it was actually a prototype written before most of the others) so it almost ended on a downer. But the last section was a commentary on the collection, so that made finishing the book feel more satisfying.

Next up, either Robert E Howard's 'Sword Woman' collection (Holding the inspiration for Red Sonja, I understand) or the NobleBright collection on my nook.

Reagan through brilliant speech, love of country and a deep connection with the people, warned us of the left and their monstrous lies.

Trump through hard work, determination, love of country and a deep connection with the people, tore back the curtain and scattered 50 years of leftist rats and cockroaches which had been feeding on America just as Reagan had warned that they would.

You can discuss conservatism, measure it's presence, absence, meaning, methods and applications but in the end, the First Job of conservatism is to defeat Leftism. Without that, the rest is idealistic word games.

Finally I reminded him how much fun we had on election night and all day Wednesday and Thursday and he began to perk up a little. Soon he was eager to go and began to hold his head up high. He even agreed to take a selfie with me and wanted to go for a walk in the park...

204 I haven't made up my mind about the "by reason of insanity" thing, and I don't think anyone SHOULD make up their mind about it.

I know the law doesn't base when it is applied, based on diagnosis, but on actions, so you can't just say "he's not really crazy, so this doesn't apply," or its inverse, "he's crazy so of COURSE the insanity plea applies."

I think it's possible someone can plan a murder, and it's still an act of insanity. People experiencing severe depression can become so disconnected from reality, they will believe all sorts of things that are not true, and it follows a logical progression in their minds, up to and including murder, at times. And once the depressive episode ends or is effectively treated, that person can explain quite clearly how messed up their thinking was at the time.

Could such a situation be effectively used as an insanity plea? I guess so. Maybe. Again though, we're really not talking about the planning/executing a coherent plan thing. We're talking about their ability to see right from wrong at the time of the act.

So I wouldn't want it eliminated, but maybe very tightly controlled? Which I think it pretty much is.

Donald Trump Saved America.

Posted by: Mortimer, Finish Her!

Conservatism in modern America is whatever people do to define it. It is why Bill Kristol and George Will and others are in such a tizzy about Donald Trump.

There is a broader intellectual argument to be made here, but having read a couple of George Will's books, I would just say he is not exactly the paragon of small government conservative that you might think. or such a champion of personal liberty.

These people are mad because they were afraid that Donald's actual real world successes, if he was elected, would make their paltry intellectual speculative conservatism seem quaint and obsolete.

It is not a virtue to be obstinate and resist reading and understanding what other people think, but it is not a vice to actually want a real tangible amount of success in the world. And that vice is the real problem with people like Bill Kristol and George Will. Their ideas of conservatism make them the enemy of what is actually possible in the real world.

I read George Will's book "Statecraft as Soulcraft" years ago, and it struck men then that he was not the conservative that I thought he was. He wanted government to shape people's character for "the good", or his definition of the good.

This is really no different than the left, but with different ideas of "the good" in mind.

Government is like fire, a dangerous servant and a fearful master - George Washington

Reality works. Most politicians are realists, because periodically, they have to get re-elected to their phoney-baloney jobs.
Regardless of that the childlike pundits think, politicians who call themselves Republicans, will follow Donald if he leads them to success.

Regardless of what a lot of politicians said in this political season, most elected Republicans will follow Trump's agenda if it looks like it will work.
In Ohio, few of the Federal elected officials campaigned with Trump (Portman, etc.), but a lot of the leaders of the Ohio House and Senate did. They understood something fundamental that the others didn't.

And then there's Kasich, who is an ass.

In addition to keeping the surprises coming, the use of different narrators in a non-chronological format kept me interested and I appreciated that there was no deus ex machina ending that makes everything OK. Yeah, none of the characters are likeable. All are self absorbed with their own pain and recklessly wound others.

I think people focus too much on Trump at their peril. What happened on Tuesday was less about Trump and more a seismic shift in the center of power in America.

Trump didn't start this movement, he stoked it and rode it. Nobody trusts or listens to the media any longer, they have proven to be corrupt. The left is outing themselves as the narcissistic children they are.

The great unwashed have risen up and said enough with the elites and ruling class telling us how things are going to be. We're back in charge of this ship. Any Republican who doesn't get onboard is going to get run over.

253 I do find solace in the media's dire predictions about Trump, since they haven't been right yet.

As for replacing the electoral college with a nationwide popular vote, such a scheme would, in short order, degenerate into a European-type model, into a "national society" that lacks a permanent constitution and basically lurches from one election to the next. No high law, no high rights, with everything up for grabs by a fat-ass monopolistic superstate. Their dream, our nightmare.

265 "Mr. Trump even indicated that he would like to keep two of the most popular benefits of the Affordable Care Act, one that forces insurers to cover people with pre-existing health conditions and another that allows parents to cover children under their plan into their mid-20s."

Forced coverage was the central point of the law. It was what distorts the market and drives up prices. It's what let's someone skate along without coverage, then walk into an office and demand care for their issues, and get it; effectively gutting the definition of "insurance."

If that policy stays in effect but the rest of the law doesn't, health insurance fails as an industry. They will all have to cover everyone's preexistig conditions, all the time, and do so without mandatory participation or government funding. I.e. go bankrupt.

So if the goal is to destroy the health insurance industry, sounds great. But it is by not repealing the whole law.

The Closest we could easily come to using the Popular vote WITH the Electoral College...

Is to do away with the State votes as a block stuff.

Make each Congressional district elect its own Elector, with the 2 Electoral Votes for the State go to whoever wins the State...

Make it a true National Election... not just a fight for a few battleground States.

And NOW is the time to put that idea forward... while the LEFT is angry...

271 Shouldn't evidence that killers clearly used coherent thought and reasoning ability to commit their crimes pretty much invalidate any kind of insanity defense? Isn't coherent thought and action pretty much the definition of sanity?

------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------

The recent "Killing Reagan" film got me thinking about John Hinckly. I've seen two movies about this and read 2 or 3 books on the subject, one by Hinckly's dad.

He had the capacity to obtain a weapon, track Reagan, formulate a plan to kill him, and damn near carry it out.

Yet there is little doubt in my mind he was very mentally disturbed/insane. After all, killing a President seems like a great life plan to impress and win the affection of Jodie Foster while she was at Yale.

Richard Speck, Charles Whitman, Ted Bundy, etc. None of these guys should have been out on the streets. Yet all were able to carry out vicious killings of many people that took varying levels of "planning".

Guilty but insane? Perhaps a mitigating factor if it is not a violent crime? But I have some problems with the concept that a Ted Bundy or this recent serial killer from South Carolina might ever see daylight again, and frankly struggle with the idea that we should pay to provide three hots and a cot for decades to monsters.

272 I think people focus too much on Trump at their peril. What happened on Tuesday was less about Trump and more a seismic shift in the center of power in America.

Yes. The lead-up to November 8 was the systematic depletion of donk legislative seats all over the U.S.

But Hillarhoid and the DNC did not pay attention to this erosion in their legislative power because they knew they had Legacy Media and especially DOJ and FBI in control. They were counting on the dumbing down of the electorate and their typical vote fraud operation in the big cities to win the day, as it has the past two presidential elections.

They weren't counting on the new players:

citizen journalists
wikileaks
their traditional base abandoning them

It's a new paradigm and the DNC is playing catch-up.

I referred to it years later when I did a paper in my abnormal psychology class on nature vs. nurture; the "Ice Man" Richard Leonard KuklinskI.
I get it that he may come across as a bit arrogant; but he created the FBI psychological profiling unit (at least that is what he indicates in his book). My opinion precisely. Trump's stock rose significantly in my eyes when he finally shut his mouth, started trying to act like a statesman, and kept it up. It showed a willingness to recognize his own shortcomings and do something about it. If he'd have hired Ms. Conway and done that back in May, this election would have been a blowout.

But that doesn't make him conservative. It doesn't eliminate his multidecade support for abortion. People are all atwitter that he'll nominate originalists and other conservatives to the SC, spelling the end of Casey. I think that's wishcasting. The man supports abortion. To think he's going to make radical appointments as part of a crusade to overturn old law he agrees with just because there is an R by his name is silly.

People are getting carried away.

At its most basic, yes. It's also used as shorthand by some, for Jewish-Republican. So it's meant as an epithet, in that regard. Carried to its further ends, being a Jewish Republican means you strongly support Israel, and then, if you support Israel, you are for the recent adventures in the Middle East.

Thus, you are a warmongering, capitalist pig-dog who only cares about Israel, and is willing to sacrifice American yoots to preserve that tiny little country.

And you are still fighting the long-thawed (in that line of thought) Cold War.

Frankly, since most of the original "Neocons" are either dead or long since gone from the national stage, the term is almost ONLY useful as an epithet, coming from the left, or from the weird stupid nazis... who are also, from the left, just a slightly different left. Even though many of them have no political philosophy beyond talking about who they hate.

Ferdinand Junior and Imelda are still highly popular in Northern Luzon.
Without a doubt Ferdinand Marcos was a bad man, but the accusations that he had Ninoy Aquino killed I think are exaggerated. The Communist Party of the Philippines and its National Peoples' Army likely killed Aquino because he was losing to Marcos in the electoral process. It was probably the CPP's infamous SPARU (Special Partisan Unit) that killed him, disguising a couple members in military uniforms or finding sympathetic soldiers to assassinate him. Making Aquino a martyr did not benefit Marcos and made his defeat to the disastrous Cory Aquino (the widow) all but inevitable.
Since this is a book thread, there is a book I read "To Suffer Thy Comrades" by Bobby Garcia which details the purges of the CPP/NPA in the 80's. Much of the "extrajudicial" killings were likely committed by themselves and blamed on Marcos as the CPP cleaned the "Philippine government moles" in horrific fashion. Torture, execution and assassination, the CPP was no less violent to its own than Marcos is accused to have been.

So everyone has to be covered, but there are multiple tiers. Boiling down to you WILL get coverage if you want it, no matter what, but have to pay a lot more.

301 One of the interesting things to look at with the EC is that it has clearly been the urban areas attempting to force their will on to the rural and suburban areas for time.

By giving the rural and suburban areas more power, per capita, then the cities, this is a check on the cities.

The urban left isn't happy of course because the EC is thwarting their will to force the rest of the country to live like they want.

This is one of the fundamental problems with pure democracy though. Just because you've convinced 50.1% of a group of people to call a tail a leg or a man a woman because he wears a dress does not give you the power to force that idiocy on anyone. There is *no* legitimate political power that does.

Back on topic. That Artillery library is in Segovia, a gorgeous medieval-looking city built on a high hill, northwest of Madrid. Lots of Muslim undertones, too, given the history of Spain.

339 I'm finishing To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis which has been recommended here in the past. I'm quite enjoying it. It is basically a screwball comedy syfy time travel adventure set primarily in Victorian England. The authoress is a Colorado native and graduate of my Cow College alma mater. I mention this to discuss the negative Amazon reviews. Many say that this English writer just doesn't translate into American and uses way too many big words anyway. To quote Steve Martin, "Well, EXCUUUUUUUSE me!" As with screwball comedies, humor is often found in confusion and misunderstandings frequently arising from interaction with eccentrics. The book is written in the first person and much of our hero's confusion and misunderstanding is the reader's, another factor the negative reviewers didn't like. I was quite impressed with the authoress's knowledge of not only Victorian society but also with history generally. One of the aforesaid eccentrics with whom our hero must contend is an Oxford don who is engaged in a bitter push-you-into-the-river rivalry with another don regarding the theory of history and his diatribes extend from Marathon to Waterloo and all battles betwixt the two.

I see this is the second (or second and a half) in the Oxford Time Travel Series. I understand the first (or the first and a half), Doomsday Book, is quite different. Although based upon the same Oxford time travel program, whereas this is a screwball comedy, Doomday is more a straight adventure involving a time traveler stranded in England during the Black Death. I'll probably read it next.

345 "At the time of the American Revolution, when the Founders were hashing out the features of the federal goverment they thought would be the best (and by 'best', I mean 'most just' not 'most efficient'), one of the issues that they needed to resolve was the competition between large states vs. small states. The Founders were concerned that the large states would simply overwhelm the small states in every election, so they wanted to balance that out a bit, and give the small states a bit of leverage so that they wouldn't be shut out entirely.

Thus the Electoral College."

It's not just the large *states*, but the concentrated municipalities. Look at the map by congressional district, and you see the "blue" is concentrated in the large cities, even in "blue" states like California, Oregon,a nd Washington. If we were to go to pure popular Presidential vote, these tiny geographical areas would dominate politics at the expense of everywhere else, suburban and rural. The attitude of the President of the last eight years would be the *only* outlook allowed politically.

These people who decry the popular vote/electoral college difference just don't want to understand that this wasn't one election, but *fifty* (plus) elections held at the same time. The states have a sovereign say, and aren't just administrative subdivisions of the Federal government.

350 Read Shakespeare's Cymbaline, a late play where King Cymbaline's queen wants to marry her evil son to her step-daughter, but she has already married for love to a poor man. He flees but is tricked into believing she's been unfaithful and wants her killed. It goes on from there, not that great.

Also read his The Tempest, considered to be the last play he wrote alone. It's a lyrical relatively short piece where the rightful Duke of Milan Prospero, a sorcerer, is overthrown by his brother and now lives on an island with daughter, native servant and fairie servant. Using magic he creates a storm causing the ship of his enemies to break up on its shores. Several plot threads run through it, in the end his daughter marries the King's son, his servants are freed, all are forgiven as he takes back his Dukedom. Great work.

Listened to The Anubis Gates, time-travel story where a young writer in 1983 travels with a group back in time to listen to a talk by the British poet Coleridge. Things go awry and he has a series of magical, violent encounters with bad guys. Had trouble following all the crazy convolutions but it was entertaining.

354 Re: the Electoral College - Living as I do in the People's Republic of Chicago (motto: "Vote Early, Vote Often"), I am very much in favor of the Electoral College, because it limits the influence that corrupt local machines (nearly all of them Democratic) can have on a national election. No matter how many votes the bosses of Chicago, or Philadelphia, or San Francisco, or Seattle steal, they'll will at most swipe their state's electoral votes. That's bad enough, but if the election of the president were based purely on the popular vote, the bosses would have every incentive to "juice" the vote for the "D" candidate as much as possible.

Furthermore, if the vote were purely popular, then, in a close election (like this year's), every city and county would potentially be a Florida 2000, as lawyers and operatives combed the country to scrounge up enough votes to put their candidate over the top. And again, the incentive to juice the totals would be irresistible. It would be a horror.

I remember a line in Herman Wouk's "The Caine Mutiny", to the effect that "The Navy is a system designed by genuises for execution by idiots"; and that's certainly the case with our Constitution. The Founders included men like Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton, and Madison; while we have Obama, Clinton, and, yes, Trump. I say, our idiots should stick to executing the genuises' system.

Once you finish it pick up John Kelly's " The Great Mortality", a good recounting of the Black Death. Lots of very moving contemporary chronicles of the circumstances and suffering. The English and the Italians were especially good at this. Time marches on but human instincts and feelings remain the same.

358 As for what I'm reading, I'm well into Bradley Martin's "Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader", which is a history of the Kim dynasty in North Korea. It's a truly scary read, the story of an entirely nation turned into a prison and plaything for Kim Il-sung and his heirs; where everyone is required not just to obey, but the *love* the leader. (And if you don't think that that is what Hillary! had in mind for us, well, you haven't been paying attention.)

The book was published while Kim Jong-il was alive, but he was in poor health, so the final chapter looks at possible heirs. After reviewing the front-runners, Martin looked at the long-shots, the last of whom were the two sons of Kim Jong-il's third wife, Ko Yong-hui: Kim Jong-chol and Kim Jong-un. About the latter, Martin writes one paragraph, as follows:

"Even less was known of Kim Jong-un, said to be two years younger than Jong-chol. In early 2003 a Japanese chef, who said he had graveled to Pyongyang frequently to cook for Ki Jong-il at home, talked about the two sons on television. He told Japanese viewers that, in contrast to his elder brother, the younger lad when very small exhibited to strangers a suspicious mien. Jong-un's glaring ferocity, the chef said, pleased Kim Jong-il. The chef said Papa had indicated he would not choose Jong-un's elder brother because he considered Jong-chol too girlish. Being mean, after all, could help round out the resume of a dictator in waiting."

Imagine Caligula with the Bomb: that's what we're facing. Luckily, we have Obama and Kerry on the job: Top men!

361 I'm dedicated to finishing my Sherlock Holmes short story on Wattpad by the end of the month. Its only got a few chapters to go, but its kind of slow going because its just a fun side project, I've never written a mystery before, and I'm trying to make sure it is a "fair play" mystery where the reader has all the clues necessary to solve the case without it being obvious or easy to solve.

And that is even harder than it sounds. At this point I am not even 100% certain how it ends, although I know the mystery. I've always wanted to write one but I think its ending up more Raymond Chandler than Arthur Conan Doyle. Not that I'm the author either of them are, but Chandler's approach was more to tell a story in which a mystery is involved, but its not even the main part of the tale.

372 As a born "neocon" (like NGU, CBD, JJ Sefton, heh), while the word is sometimes used as a code word for "Joooo" (rarely if ever at AoS though) it is often used legitimately by those who disagreed with Bush's intervention in Iraq. Whether I agree with them or not. As others have suggested here its origins have been lost in the fog of time. In the 80s it was former libs who were on board with Reagan's foreign policy, something I think everyone here would agree with.

The same thing seems to be happening in reverse with "alt-right". Just what the heck is "alt-right" anyway? Is it simply the next stage of the Tea Party, people who are suspicious of GOPe? Or is it the racists and antisemites on the fringe? My suspicion is that leftists and NeverTrumpers are trying to use "alt-right" to tar the former with the latter.

378 374 Love Connie Willis. She has a new one out called "Cross Talk". It isn't a time travel book, but it is still sci-fi. She takes on the culture of constant connectedness. (Not really sure that is a word.) I enjoyed it. Not as much as I enjoyed The Doomsday Book, but it was fun.

I'll have to check this one out. Another great novel on the happyface oppressiveness of constant connection is "The Circle" by Dave Eggers, which takes place in a Silicon Valley hive much like Google.

380 read his The Tempest,

I always thought of The Tempest as just a fairy tale until I actually read it. There is much beautiful language and insight therein.

381 I started "The Romanovs" by Simon Sebag Montefiore at the bottom of Palo Duro Canyon blissfully cut off from the world on Election Night. As Mr. Montefiore is a very readable historian who, as The Economist stated once, "cannot be faulted for lack of industry", this should be a great read, just as his other books were. Waiting in the wings is Charles Moore's bio of Margaret Thatcher. I held off on it to be a consolation read if HRC won the election (you know, read about a REAL, no BS genuine female BA leader as solace), but she lost! I flipped through it and said "What the hell, it's next up."

384 Kindltot @126 recommended the historical novels of L. Sprague De Camp; a recommendation that I would like to heartily second. They are available for Kindle at only $6.99 each.

My personal favorite is "The Dragon of the Ishtar Gate". The Persian warrior Bessas is given a last second reprieve from death by slow impalement and given a mission that may be equally risky: the Great King Xerxes needs him to pick up a few ingredients for an immortality potion. Bessas and his former tutor, Myron of Miletos (a Greek philosopher who is no great warrior but is a master of such arcane (by Persian standards) arts as logic, long division and compound interest) are sent to the sources of the Nile to capture and bring back alive to the imperial capital the dragon of the title. Oh, and while they are out, would they mind picking up the ear of a king? Thx!

What Bessas and Myron do not know is that there is another item on the list for the potion:

Heart of a Hero (1). Any guesses as to where the Great King's wizard expects to get that item?

It reads like a fantasy epic but De Camp writes with a through knowledge of the history and geography of the period. And do not miss the afterword where he lays out the hard evidence that someone did, in fact, make such an amazing journey.

385 The entire Constitutional scheme to divide power to thwart tyranny. 3 branches, two legislatures with one popular and one reflective, an Electoral College, Federal vs. States, etc.

1.) The EC was designed not just for Big State/Little State balance, but to give the Establishment a check over the pure Demos, which can degenerate into a mob, i.e., 6 wolves and 5 sheep voting on dinner.

2.) The rationale for the Electoral College is the same rationale as for the Senate. If you abolish one, you abolish the other.

3.) Those state laws proposing awarding Electoral votes to the candidate who didn't win them are an anti-Constitutional short-circuit by Democrats to pad their lead, another Potemkin Constitutional ruse. If you think the People won't raise hell about that, you are sorely mistaken.

4.) I think Trump won the popular vote, too--especially once you subtract out all the imaginary friends, the double-voting, cartoon characters, house pets, felons, foreign nationals, mail-in fraud, machine-tampering, the dearly departed, Harry Reid's multiple personalities and all of Carlos Danger's aliases.

Going to a pure popular vote would create so much fraud it would make the Clinton Foundation look like an actual charity.

Amend your Constitution honestly or obey it like it is.

386 Here's the hidden thing with the electoral college. When the census comes around every 10 years, they reapportion congressional districts by total population - that includes people with green cards and illegal immigrants. California itself has 8 to 10 EXTRA congressional districts because of it's legal and illegal non-citizen population. It has 8 to 10 extra electoral votes as well.

Now, the non-citizens aren't supposed to be able to vote, but the electoral college gives their areas extra voting power for president just because they exist.

When our constitution was established the slave holding states wanted a system just like what we have now. The non-slaves didn't want the slaves or non-citizens to be counted, thus the 3/5ths compromise.

How many congressional seats would be lost for the democrats if non-citizens weren't counted as population for congressional districts?

387 doug--Those foreign nationals shouldn't be counted for Electoral College and congressional purposes, as they are citizens of other "jurisdictions", any more than we would count an invading army or foreign tourists. Again, judges have perverted this.

btw, The Senate, and therefore the EC, act as a kind of supermajority requirement. We should abolish the filibuster because it is a faux supermajority requirement not found in the Constitution--and respect the Actual supermajority requirement for treaties.

388 Just getting in here real quick to say I have been reading the following books:

I'll See You In Heaven (Cat Lover's Edition) by Friar Jack Wintz
Homer's Odyssey: Or What I Learned About Love and Life From a Blind Wondercat by Gwen Cooper

I've been thinking about getting another cat after being without one for 13 years. That was when I was taking care of one of my then-girlfriend's cats while she looked for an apartment that would take both of them. After reading both of these books, I really want to rescue another cat from the shelter, but I still worry about paying vet bills. Is pet insurance a viable option?

Currently, I am having a ball reading G. K. Chesterton's Orthodoxy. He is such an elegant writer, and knows how to cram a lot of substance into a single sentence. Many times, I have read no more than a paragraph, and have to stop and reflect. But there's such a joy in the writing that I don't mind at all.

Got to catch the bus to work -- 'bye!
