Shelby Steele: Deference to the Stigmatizing Power of PC is "Desptoism"

He wrote for the Wall Street Journal, and I'd like to link them, but they're behind a paywall, so try reading it at Zero Hedge.

Since the '60s the Democratic Party, and liberalism generally, have thrived on the power of deference. When Hillary Clinton speaks of a "basket of deplorables," she follows with a basket of isms and phobias--racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia and Islamaphobia. Each ism and phobia is an opportunity for her to show deference toward a victimized group and to cast herself as America's redeemer. And, by implication, conservatism is bereft of deference. Donald Trump supporters are cast as small grudging people, as haters who blindly love America and long for its exclusionary past. Against this she is the very archetype of American redemption. The term "progressive" is code for redemption from a hate-driven America.

So deference is a power to muscle with. And it works by stigmatization, by threatening to label people as regressive bigots. Mrs. Clinton, Democrats and liberals generally practice combat by stigma. And they have been fairly successful in this so that many conservatives are at least a little embarrassed to "come out" as it were. Conservatism is an insurgent point of view, while liberalism is mainstream. And this is oppressive for conservatives because it puts them in the position of being a bit embarrassed by who they really are and what they really believe.

Deference has been codified in American life as political correctness. And political correctness functions like a despotic regime. It is an oppressiveness that spreads its edicts further and further into the crevices of everyday life. We resent it, yet for the most part we at least tolerate its demands. But it means that we live in a society that is ever willing to cast judgment on us, to shame us in the name of a politics we don’t really believe in. It means our decency requires a degree of self-betrayal.

He goes on to describe Trump as an avatar of the anti-deference position.

Note that he doesn't say, as I wouldn't say, that Trump arrives at his anti-deference position through rigorous philosophical inquiry. He arrives there only because he has a very large ego and has been rich all his life and, like a superstar athlete, therefore has come to expect people to defer to him and generally get away with behaving like an ass.

However, that's still something. I know a lot of "conservative" writers and politicians who will tell you wonderful reasons why one should not defer to political correctness, but then do so themselves anyway.

Actually, to be honest with you, very few people do that at all. The most they do is write snarky "Look at what these crazy college kids are doing now" posts. They don't propose a philosophical defense of autonomy and resistance to social bulling any more than Trump does.

However, let's say hypothetically that they did: Their actions will still carry more weight than their mere words, and their actions would still be those of a pet whose grown to like his cage and will mount defenses of his cage if attacked for living in a cage made by others.

Trump did not come to the position of defiance in the face of relentless, unending social bullying by philosophical pathways, but unlike most of those in our overly-socialized, let-us-not-defy-popular-opinion, we-all-must-buckle-to-group-thinking party, he did get there.

And that puts him ahead of the game.

There have been a lot of eye-opening things for me this election cycle, but one of the most eye-opening was to see how the "party of individualists" is so girlishly sensitive to Mean Girl social pressures, and of course how people who spend some time occasionally decrying social justice witch-hunts are very, very eager to join in a social justice scalp hunt the moment they have the chance.

It's very much like the playground, where people are just afraid to stick out for fear that they'll be the next to be chosen for group ridicule by the all-important Group, and who merrily join in in the ridiculing of others because at least that takes the spotlight off them for the period of the other's shaming.

Plus, of course, it's just plain fun to be cruel to people in a way that is socially acceptable because The Group decided it was, isn't it?

11 This is the thing I'm going to point out if Trump somehow wins: people didn't vote for Trump so much because they love him or his policies, although some did.

They voted for him because it was a big up yours to the status quo, an anti-establishment finger, a rebellion against snowflakes and helicopter parents and safe spaces and microaggressions and participation trophies and political correctness.

Trump is the anti-PC candidate. He says rude and nasty things he is utterly unashamed doing so, and when called on it, he doubles down. He is the FYNQ guy, and for all his many flaws, that appeals to people a lot.

How much, we'll soon find out.

I agree with your first sentence. There is no evidence that Trump is grounded philosophically to a political ideology, other than a perhaps generalized desire for what's "right". But, your second sentence is pure bullshit. Trump likes to opine without regard to the sensitivity of others. He sees no reason to censor himself or to shut up based on the code of those who seek to assert their superior social position. That is a far cry from him expecting that others defer to him. No doubt he expects his employees to defer to him, but in the public sphere, he has not had that trait.

Trump has tapped this enormous hidden trove of resentment and anger, and it will carry him to a victory unlike anything we have seen since Reagan.

One point that few notice is that the title of the highest office in this land is Chief Executive. It is not, say Chief Political Hack, Chief Person with a Law Degree, or Chief Toadying Puppet.

Trump is an Executive with a proven track record. He knows how to Manage things. That is what the office calls for, and especially in this dangerous time.

To me they are essentially the same. No one else on the stage, except Cruz (and I'm cynical enough tho reserve a sliver of doubt there) was functionally against that culture. That march to the USA of France. Republicans as Tories, Dems as Labor. It goes hand in hand with globalization. There is little to no room in a collective democracy for individual rights. Look at Europe today, or Canada.

Until Trump I had basically given up hope that any candidate could break through the establishment lines to reverse the trend, since the trend is the bedrock of both establishment parties. Jeb, Rubio, the rest WANT that future, accept it as being the future.

Amen. It is in the Lord we trust, not in politicians and parties and movements. Man proposes, and God disposes, and it is best we always remember this. His will be done, even if it means something I dread or do not want.

When I was a little boy my parents would regularly tell me to do something I did not want to, or not to do something I wanted to. Sometimes it was just awful and I would cry and despair. But they were older and wiser and understood what I could not as a child. God is the same for us today. Trust the Lord, whatever comes to pass.

Forget Trump's lack of erudition, in a formal sense. It's probably mostly the devolution of American "leaders" into sub-mediocre consultant-crafted mashed-potato sandwiches (somebody's classic description of former CA Gov. Gray Davis). 108 He arrives there only because he has a very large ego and has been rich all his life and, like a superstar athlete, therefore has come to expect people to defer to him and generally get away with behaving like an ass.

I have a slightly different take on this. I think what's happening is that Trump genuinely thinks very strongly that he is NOT a bigot, a sexist, a racist, etc.

So he is both surprised and outraged that he has suddenly in 2015-16 been accused of this.

It's not that he has gotten away with behaving like an ass all his life, so that when liberals now in 2015-16 accuse him of being an ass, he insists on 'getting away with it' because he got away with it in the past.

It's that he believes justifiably that the attacks are unfair, and he stands up for himself.

I don't see the evidence that he was ever racist, sexist, xenophobic, etc.

I always thought this idea that ideological purity being the real test of how they would govern was absurd.

Usually the really "perfect" voting record Republicans were simply ones that represented comfortable, Republican states. They weren't necessarily fighters.

Id rather take a Donald Trump that was willing to fight for something like Border Control over the Cato Institute think tank pencil neck that has a great white paper on entitlement reform.

161 Back from voting with grandkids. Older one (12) was impressed that people talked to me and I talked about what my four kidlets were doing. 2yo was a looney, but had fun -- I'm so grateful that he knows holding hands is a good thing.

Not overly busy for presidential year. Nice thing is that we have high schoolers helping for credit. They were sweet.

Old Dem (Commie) is still the pollwatcher and at least he acknowledged me this time (since I have known him for 30 years at the least) -- primary he was soooo disappointed that this old R was still voting R.

The fact that they have any in Spanish at all annoys me in many ways.

171 I agree with this analysis. Had unpleasant words this morning with someone who refused to vote and seemed to me he just wanted to be able to "fit in" with his social group no matter which way the election went by abdicating any responsibility for it. I might have actually used the word coward.....it didn't go over well but that's the power of social stigmatization.

174 Well, there were more people at my little polling place, the local church here, than I've ever seen before. This morning, the line, well, I had to describe the layout, but it went all the way to the damn road. The parking lot was slap full.

I finally bit the bullet and got in the line at 5:30PM, and just got back. I stayed in line over an hour. They had 3 times as many voting machines as they've ever had.

I have never seen turnout like this. Ever. This is a district in Jeff Duncan's district, Greenville SC are. I used to be in District 4, Trey Gowdy, but after redistricting where we got upped to 9 electoral votes, they shaved me off and put me over in Duncan's district.

Again, I've never seen turnout at this level, ever, and I've been voting since '86.

237 " he did get there. And that puts him ahead of the game."

Obama's guys said "in the end it comes down to the barrel of the gun"

Or, "in Italy they would take ten guys and hang them in public, and the people would then obey better" (paraphrased)

So with a 40 year coordinated Marxist theory attack on America, whose fellow travelers had successfully marched through our institutions ... combined with a banking system that runs our monetary policy and selects winners and losers ... in the face of all that Trump "Got There".

That is what makes me so tired of hearing any of those that belittle his philosophical abilities. Those that have their ideological system have never put it in practice, on any meaningful scale. Trump has operated in the real world, and he is winning in the real world.

Set phasers to ideological stun is awesome Redstate Theory ... there are no such phasers in practice. I'm not military but there is something like "all battle plans go out the window after the first shot is fired".

So how Trump got there ... is by being a real person in the real world, offering what the real people wanted. Any diminution of his cognitive abilities based on pundit theory is only useful in academic circles. If they walked into the firing line armed with such weapons they'd immediately be beaten to a pulp.

America First ... NATO revisited ... strategic trade ... Trump did that, no one else came close. The left battles academically I guess ... but as we see now, they win by lying and cheating and laughing at those that think this is some academic debate with a fair judge. Our nation was not founded that way, and we never won a war that way.

He's the family democrat. He's autistic and really into US history and the presidents. He bought the Hillary nonsense at first. But I let him watch the commercials over the last two weeks. Sunday he broke for trump. Told his sister why tonight. Same thing. Trump says bad words but he will be better for poor people.

Daughter 8, asked why he says bad words. I told he still has a lot of growing up to do. She said Dad he even older than you. I told her sometimes people who are rich grow up and don't learn how to act right. Sometimes things come to easy and they don't learn how to treat others the way they like to be treated. Some rich people learn when they are young because their parents are able to treat them like everyone else. Daughter was very thoughtful.
