Bud Light Drops Amy Schumer and Seth Rogen as Pitchpyrsyns, As Bud Light Sales Fall

It's funny, a commenter just brought this up last week or the one before.

And now they're out.

A spokesman for the company told AdWeek they were "clearly not satisfied."

"Despite continued positive signs in brand health evolution, driven by millennials and Hispanics, 3Q was the softest performance of Bud Light for the year from a volume and share perspective," Lisa Weser said.

"The Bud Light Party campaign helped us improve these brand attributes, but it did not translate to improved volume and share performance. While we are clearly not satisfied with Bud Light's performance, we are already leveraging what we've learned to develop and execute new work."

Beer companies probably shouldn't hire fat people to sell a product widely believed to cause fattening.

29 Anhauser Busch got bought by a big foreign company, which had a business plan to slow payments to vendors. Ad agencies weren't getting paid for over six months. I'd bet the better agencies walked or stopped putting in their best effort. That and the new owner doesn't understand Americans.

Which is why Bud's Super Bowl ads now suck, and why we got ads with Amy.

Bud is one of the few beers I don't like, but I don't like seeing a classic American brand killed like this.

In 2004 I went out to Boston to see my brother. We were at a pub and they said that had some PBR on tap. It was surprising because a pint cost over $5. In my mind I was thinking, "Back in Wisconsin, you wouldn't pay more that $2 for a pint of this in a bar."

Crazy hipsters.

Because, duh.

279 Bud, and ESPECIALLY Bud Lite, are simply Beers for people who really dislike Beer.

The Reason: Bud tastes like crap, and bud lite tastes like watered down crap. Anyone who actually likes Beer knows this, and will spew it out instantly. There are so many good beers out at any store now today! Doesn't matter which specialty you like - pilsners, lagers, IPA's, brown ales, hoppy beers, non-hoppy beers, stouts - on and on, there are so many, and so many good tasting examples available in each niche! Why would anyone drink swill like Bud?

Here's why - because if you are someone who really hates beer (and this includes most women) then it all tastes like crap to you, and if you feel compelled by peer pressure to drink some of the crap (in your view) that other people are drinking, it might as well be heavily promoted crap and easily available, and kind of cheap. Why not?

And this is why Bud's best costumers are people who socially want to be seen to be drinking something with their friends, even though they secretly hate it and would rather be drinking anything else.

344 I think it's pretty interesting as an exercise to see how these people think.

Amy Schumer went from IT girl to joke over night with the joke stealing thing, where she was mocked ruthlessly. She also tanked in her movies, so she's not exactly a hot property. BUT, libs WANT her to be, since she ticks all the boxes for proper IT girl qualifications.

So people outright reject Amy Schumer and all she stands for, and yet the Libs still push her movies and ad firms still get her hired for stupid commercials. It's almost like they live in a reality where you, Joe Flyover, have no right to not spend money on their favorite things.

Seth Rogen is the exact same scenario. His movies started bombing once his Canadian ass started opining on politics. People voted with their wallets.

2012 remains in some ways a mystery. But it keeps me from being optimistic, *even* now. But as many here have said for some time, a comfortable Trumpenvictory would not be at all surprising. 1. Make beer

You don't need a spokesliberal to get me to buy your product. Tell me your beer is refreshing and cheap. Show me Joe Everyman enjoying one at the local bar. Show me a buxom woman walking into this bar. The neckbeard hipsters are too busy arguing about whose pants are tight enough to show off their man vag so the woman displays no interest. Some slimy weasel yuppie sort tries to buy her an overpriced fruity drink and she just keeps on walking. Big Booby Betty finally sees Joe Everyman and his Bud Light. I watched early Amy Schumer's Comedy Central 1 hour special. That was funny. The whole episode of her show on CC that I watched in its first season was pretty funny, but not enough to go gaga over her talent or anything.

But that's just my opinion.

432 Not trying to defend the choice of Rogan/Schumer, but isn't there some degree of inertia involved in the whole process as well? These ads have been going on for a few months so far, which means that the actual choice of actors probably happened sometime last year. And the writers at the ad agency started concepting them out before even then.

The fact that this happened in the middle of a highly polarized election season during which time the two actors they pick happen to come out vocally against the same market that they're trying to court could mostly be one of timing.

446 How to sell mass-market beer:
1. Make beer
2. Make it taste alright
3. Sell it for a decent price

Betty appreciates his taste in beer and his thriftiness and decides that Joe's her man.

Bud Light: It will get you laid by chicks with a good rack.

Watch the sales skyrocket.

Seth Rogan has that "stoner comedian" type of humor that I find fine in small doses, but really grates on me in extended periods of time. He's fine the wacky side character, but if that humor is the focal point of the entire show/movie/special/whatever, it's going to get old fast.

No, I have a theory that commenter "Maritime" is entirely correct.

I think ad agencies had been taken over by young turks who have all these "in your face!" and "smash the comfort zone!" ideas which are ultimately based in social marxism but which they have brought into the world of mainstream advertising. They talk a good game and lure these major clients in, the produce ads which feature a feel-bad extravaganza of disastrous backfiring jokes -- and sales PLUMMET afterwards. I see it over and over and over for countless brands. Yet somehow, the ad agencies jive-talk their way out of it.

What we are seeing is the ultimate mashup of culture-destroying progressive activism and desperate cooptive capitalism. Who will win?

Every time I saw a "Man Law" commercial I would say to whoever was in earshot, "Man law number one is that 'light' beer is never to be considered actual beer."

489 Ad companies mostly seem to be making ads for their ad company lately. The ads are bizarre, rarely have anything to do with the virtues of the product, often (as noted above) its hard to even know what the product IS. Ad campaigns that do well in trade show awards like the Burger King "wake up with the king" campaign are praised, but don't move product. They aren't really even trying to sell anything except how "brilliant" and "edgy" they are any more.

The thing is, I have a hard time judging ads, because they never work on me. Ever. I have never watched an ad and because of it wanted the product, not once. I just don't give a crap and am unsellable. Further I'm in an age range now where I don't trust anything I see, so I'm not who they are targeted at, and often are just bizarre and unfathomable to me.

Why are you trying to kill my rep?

Posted by: SMFH at my deplorable self... at October 31, 2016 03:49 PM (eaeIS)

507 494 Ad companies mostly seem to be making ads for their ad company lately.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor

Agree 100%.

Way back when I was a little kid, I realized this:

If something is being advertised, then it must be crap, otherwise it would "sell itself" and they wouldn't need to trick people into buying it. So my visceral reaction to EVERY ad is to instantly and permanently boycott whatever it is being advertised. The very existence of a TV commercial for something is to me like an announcement forbidding me from ever purchasing that product.

That philosophy has only intensified as I grow older and wiser.

Yes. Just don't overdo it.

I always click political ads from the left on right leaning websites because they have to give a few pennies to websites that are dedicated to fighting the left.

Also, when you do click, actually do something on the page that pops up. Activity on the page after a click apparently shifts more money to the originating website.

523 I don't watch porn and don't know what GILF means Grandmother Id most like to F****?
Posted by: FenelonSpoke

Yes, "GILF" is an elaboration of the "MILF" concept.

MILF = "Mother I'd Like to F**K" -- an attractive mom-aged woman.

GILF = "Grandmother I'd Like to F**K" -- theoretically an attractive older woman.

However, the age ranges in PRON have shifted downward, so now anyone over about 22 is a "MILF" and anyone over about 34 is a "GILF."

I don't make the rules, I just report them.

I'd be curious to know if you've ever been hypnotized. If you couldn't be hypnotized then I wonder if there is a correlation betweenpeople who can't be hypnotized and people who are unmoved by otherwise effective television advertising.

MIT conducted a media study in the 80's on the effects of televisionviewer and brain activity. Seems the mental state of a television viewer somewhat resembles subjects in a hypnotic state.

As an aside, Sony and other media companies have conducted in-depth research into this subject since MIT's groundbreaking work--and probably prior to it. None of their work, unlike MIT's, has been published.

Well, much of advertising is merely announcing the existence of a product in hopes it will then sell. But there is a vast amount more of advertising that seems to be there just to berate and annoy.

The funny thing is, some of the best ads I've ever watched were for products I would never buy simply because I have no need for them. Yet, if you have the need for the product you will seek it out without prompting.

Like finance, advertising is one of the industries that has created the illusion of being far more necessary than it really is.

601 Advertising seems to have two valid purposes:

1) awareness; I know I'd sell more books if more people knew they existed. 99.999% of the earth has no idea I even have any books out there, and just having more eyeballs would translate into more sales.
2) reminder; hey we're still out there, don't forget us!

Trying to get people to buy your product? I guess it works but does it work well enough to pay for the advertising fees? I'm skeptical. It probably did in the past, but I wonder today. I suspect a lot of companies are working under schemes and data that's decades out of date.

There was a hitch where I worked and I got to see them most days, either doing their daily parade art just walking down the back road with one of their workers. I couldn't get enough of them ever.

It would crack me up to see four or so of them ambling down the road with a little man barely visible in there among the huge beasts, holding the halter ropes. Good thing they're so well behaved.

Besides the 911 ad they did with the Clydesdale's all bowing to NYC with never forget on a banner, the best ad, IMO, was the one with the puppy who kept escaping to visit his friend the Clydesdale. And the one with the little baby Clydesdale trying to fit into a collar and pull the wagon, who is unknowingly helped by the older horses pushing.

Ads like that are wonderfully quiet, virtuous short stories that make you feel good about the product.

Not some fat, stupid liberal actors lecturing me on what I should think about the world in general, and oh, here's our beer we are pitching.

Posted by: Jen the original at October 31, 2016 04:41 PM (oDUj/)

698 I stopped ordering and buying Bud Light months ago because of those commercials. On Saturday night a guy asked for a Miller Lite and when the bartender asked whether Bud Light was okay he literally scoffed and obliquely referenced the commercials.

I'll never buy the product again as it appears Bud Light has been fully converged.

702 My daughter works at a major bewer and we were discussing the terriblness of this...Schumer and Rogen. She, my daughter, being a good millenial said that if Bud was going after the millenials, they were doing it wrong... Then last night she read to me a story about Lady Gaga and Bud doing a "dive bar" tour. "Who the hell listens to Lady Gaga, who visits a dive bar?" she yelled. So another gazillion dollars down a rat hole...

Posted by: Francisco A Lopez at November 01, 2016 04:34 PM (6A6AQ)

703 I'm no beer expert, but how the beer tastes was hardly the problem with the "Bud Light Party" ad campaign. Bud Light is normally an extremely high-selling beer brand. In 2014, it was the best-selling brand of beer in the U.S., and had almost twice the sales of the #2 brand (Coors Light). That doesn't make it good, but it does show that the brand was starting from a position of strength in the market. You may not like it, I may not like it, but there are lots and lots of people who drink it anyway. Bud Light didn't make their beer taste any worse by hiring Schumer and Rogen to advertise it.

They did, however, align themselves with liberals (the fact that all the signs in their ad were blue certainly boosted that impression), and I can't see how doing that is going to improve a brand's strength in the long term.
