Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | World Series Game 4 [BCochran]Game 3 was one hell of a game. A pitcher's duel that included multiple pitchers from both teams and clutch defense in big spots. Tomlin surprised a lot of people, including me, with how well he pitched. He threw 4 solid innings before getting into a bit of trouble in the 5th and Terry Francona wasted no time in going to the ALCS MVP Miller in relief. I think Tomlin was given an emotional boost by having the opportunity to pitch in front of his father who is seriously ill. Hendricks gave up no runs, but was constantly dealing with runners on base. He managed to scatter 6 hits and 2 walks without giving up any runs in 4 1/3 innings. The Cubs' bullpen was stellar except for the 1 run in the 7th. That 1 run proved to be all that was necessary. So that 1 run. With runners 1st and 3rd in the 7th, pitcher Andrew Miller was due up for the Indians. Francona had a decision to make. Leave his ace reliever in to continue to hold the Cubs or pinch hit for him and attempt to finally push some runs across. Francona decided to pinch hit veteran Coco Crisp for Miller. And, of course, Francona's decision paid off. Crisp stroked a single to right, scoring Martinez. Chicago blew far too many chances for runs. On the night they were 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position and left a total of 7 men on base. You just can't do that against a bullpen like Cleveland. If they give you the opportunity, you have to make the most of it. Two perfect examples. Bottom of 7, Soler slices one that looks foul down the right field line, but the wind brings it back and Chisenhall misplays it in the right field corner. The ball rattles around in corner and Soler ends up with a 2 out triple. And then Baez grounds out. Inning over. The other example came in the bottom of the 9th. Rizzo led off with a single. Two outs later, Heyward reaches 1st and Rizzo gets to 3rd on a ground ball booted by Indians' 1B Napoli. Heyward then steals 2nd to put the winning run in scoring position. Baez once again at the plate with 2 outs and runners in scoring position. Strikeout. Baez. Game over. Game 4 is vitally important to the Cubs. Going down 3-1 would be a nightmare. They have a tall task before them because tonight's starter for the Indians is Kluber. Kluber has been absurdly good this postseason. The man with a 0.74 ERA in the postseason will be pitching on 3 days rest. The Cubs have got to get consistent with their offense and avoid yet another shutout. They've been shutout twice in the first 3 games. Kluber is good, but not unhittable. The Cubs simply have to find away to bust up the Francona model of Kluber for 5, Miller for 2, likely Shaw for the 8th, and then Allen slamming the door in the 9th. That model has been devastating this postseason. The Cubs are asking veteran righty John Lackey to hold the line. He's yet to earn a decision this postseason, but the Cubs won both games he started. He's well used to postseason pressure as he's thrown 135 1/3 postseason innings in his career. The 38 year old needs to be on his A game tonight to match Kluber and keep the Cubs in this thing. My apologies to grammie winger and all the Cubs fans out there, but I think Kluber continues his amazing postseason. I think the Indians take it tonight. As always, enjoy the post, enjoy the game. If you're looking for politics, it's not here. There's a thread below and I'm sure one soon to be above. Let us baseball junkies do our thing in peace if you please. Chicago must be praying that Kluber is tired and will do what Kershaw did in the playoffs. Kershaw seemed to shake off the postseason curse he's had in past years, but after beating the Nats and then the Cubs in his first outing against them, he just couldn't repeat magic. Of course, Kershaw was coming back after an injury as well.

Here's what I've gathered, because I don't listen to T.V. announcers often. Even when they are audibly "on", I still don't "listen" to what they're saying.
#1. You can tell Joe Buck never played the game. He asks inane questions and makes nonsensical statements. #2. He doesn't allow for "pregnant pauses", so as to let the crack of the bat and roar of the crowd speak for itself. He is a jabber-box. #3.He roots for his own "story lines" and repeats them throughout the game. (common amongst play-by-play and color commentators.) #4. He speaks mostly in monotone. If Kluber doesn't hit 95/96mph after the third inning? He's not in trouble, but he won't be able to miss nine bats on third strikes through six innings.
He'll become a ground ball pitcher with that two-seamer, curve and change. Cleveland merely has "surprising" offense from various players all season, so Lester can be as effective as Hendricks was last night and still win easily. I won't make a score prediction because I'm always wrong. Every single time. Posted by: Slapweasel, (Deplorable1), (T) at October 29, 2016 07:30 PM (6gk0M) 35

Joe Buck reminds me of an irritating next door neighbor whom you can't get rid of and won't go away. If he sees you out working in your yard he'll always come over and talk so you can't get any work done.
Posted by: OregonMuse, deplorable since 2004 at October 29, 2016 08:12 PM (wXDkT) AtC told me a great story earlier. They're doing watch parties at the stadium in Cleveland. A bunch of fans got together and asked management if they could mute the Fox broadcast audio and pipe in the local radio guys. "No. MLB rules won't allow it." Fan response? "Ok, tell us how much the fine is and we'll start a go fund me to pay it." Then a bunch of Chicago fans got involved with "Yeah, we'd give to that." Moral of the story: Everybody hates Joe Buck. Got to attend the first 2 games of the WS when bro in law pitched for the Angels (2001I think). Since it was in Aneheim everyone was celebrity watching as much as the game. Still remember the aggravated look on Keanue Reeves face when my wife asked for a pic with him. The little runt was probably just embarrassed to stand next to my 5'9 Misses.

Posted by: OregonMuse, deplorable since 2004 at October 29, 2016 08:12 PM (wXDkT) The Indians are doing game watches at Progressive Field and a bunch of people asked the Indians on twitter (aside, whomever it is who runs the Indians twitter feed is completely hilarious) if it was possible to mute the feed and pipe in Hammy's call of the game instead. The reply was Can't. MLB rules. The reply to that was well what's the fine, we'll start a Go Fund Me and a bunch of Cubs fans jumped in with we'll donate to that. Finally, something that can bring Indians fans and Cubs fans together. The suckitude of Joe Buck. Thanks to the miracles of Sirius XM and the pause button on the dvr, I can pause the game and then sync it up to the Sirius feed of the Indians radio broadcast and never have to listen to Joe Buck. I have a long-standing, healthy and fully-reasoned dislike for ARod. Came by it honestly, the Mariners had ARod back when people were impressed with him and held out hope for his talent. Let's just say that nothing that he did with his career after leaving Seattle surprised any Mariner fan one bit.
We just knew it earlier than everybody else. So it floors me to have to admit that ARod is GREAT as a baseball commentator. I heard him with Fox last year for the first time and couldn't believe my ears. Informative, explained things so that anybody could understand, self-deprecating, and funny! He's amazing. I'll feel happy for the winners and quite sad for the fans of the losing team, because they're both long suffering bunches and I know what it feels like. It's not like being a Yankees fan. The Yankees might have a bad stretch but their fans know damn well they'll be back in contention at some point.
Obviously, I've had better luck with my football team, but I remembered that long crappy stretch the Pack had in the 70s and 80s too well to get too cocky when they got good again. Posted by: Donna&&&&V.(brandishing ampersands) at October 29, 2016 08:42 PM (P8951) 195

The 'moneyline' M/L is just a straight up bet: Who will win the game? The "+" numbers mean they are the underdog - if it is +115, then a $10 bet wins you $11.50. The "-" numbers (say -130), means a bet of $13 wins you $10. There was also a "-1.5" runs for one of the teams this game (I actually forgot who was the favorite tonight! I might be repressing it, so it's probably Cleveland.) That's the 'line' that is similar to the majority of football betting. Posted by: Deporable Ian Galt at October 29, 2016 09:21 PM (3UnZB) 361

I thing that Miller is a "Foot-On-Neck" move with more games left to use other options, including at least two with Andrew Miller.
I didn't like it at first, but I'll agree with it. Posted by: Slapweasel, (Deplorable1), (T) at October 29, 2016 11:07 PM (6gk0M) Posted by: L, Elle at October 29, 2016 11:07 PM (6IPEM) 730
