The Country Where Offensive #Hashtags Are Considered Worse Than Sexualization of Children
There is a jihad against incorrect words and even thoughts. It is considered so horrible, that the sexualization is not big deal in comparison! How bad? Use social media to express an incorrect thought, or other wise act in a way the state deems "harms" the legally protected, and you can go to jail. Create and distribute pictures of a sexualized minor? It's not like they have to prosecute anyone! The country in question? Those signs that someone is about to quit don't apply too well for me. The exception is the one about not committing to deadlines. When I was younger I suppose the public displays of dissatisfaction were also more public, but that's because I was younger.
(Besides, a lot of these signs are redundant.) Typically when I'm about to jump ship I amp up my workload in accordance to the resume I'm building and the interview questions I've been (recently) answering. It takes work ethic, and improved people-skills, to get out there for interviews. It all looks to cow orkers like I'm angling for a promotion. OK. Guns. Guns guns guns. I just learned something I never heard of before. I was watching a true life crime show and the victim was shot by a .30 rifle. They found a little plastic doodad that they didn't know what it was. It was a sabot which had the effect of preventing any ballistics matching. The suspect claimed he used them all the time because they improved accuracy.
I've heard of sabots being used in tank and antitank guns but never in a handgun or longarm. (In antitank guns, the idea is to increase caliber and velocity in the barrel then the sabots are discarded as the round leaves the barrel leaving a slender, high velocity projectile that can punch through armor.) Is it comment 100 yet? Cuz' I pulled the trigger on buying a CZ 550 Varmint with Boyd's stock in .308 today. I've been wanting one for a long time, I already have a CZ 550 Full Stock (Mannlicher stock) in .243 w/ a Weaver 1-3x and a CZ 550 American cut to 18" w/ a brake mounted Thunderbeast can. The CZ 750 10-round detachable magazine works in the 550 line (same action). Expensive, but I caught a deal on a lot of them on a forum, and have several on-hand (for pennies on the dollar).
Mauser action, 10-round detachable box mag (that works with both the 308 and 243), single-set trigger, what's not to like? So I've been wanting a nice long-distance starter kit rig to get into some long-distance courses (probably not competition, I never expect to get THAT good). Anyway, I just found out they've been set to "discontinued/limited production". Then I started getting notifications they were available at several stores I check. Then they sold out w/in like two days. Then I got another notification from GrabAGun, and it was $100 cheaper than the other places. So I couldn't help myself, I jumped on it. Should be here this week. Now, I get to figure out how I'm going to pay for it (lol) and then look at getting it cut to 24", threaded and the can brake put on it (already have the brake). Then I need to figure out where to get $1,000 for the Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP and mounts to top it off. But it'll be sooooo sweet when it's done. Is it comment 100 yet?
US Hercules Plane Lands On & Takes Off From Aircraft
------------ That surprises me not at all. I used to watch C-130's practice short-field take-offs and landings at the Lockheed plant at Marietta. I've mentioned this here in the past, I could swear that the props were reversed before they actually touched down. I'm a bit puzzled about how they took off without assist. The Forrestal's deck is (?) 1300', but I think the minimum take-off distance for C-130 might be twice that. The 'air speed' over the deck would help, but not enough... I wouldn't think. 33 OK. (In antitank guns, the idea is to increase caliber and velocity in the barrel then the sabots are discarded as the round leaves the barrel leaving a slender, high velocity projectile that can punch through armor.) Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Now With More Je Ne Sais Quoi! at October 21, 2016 10:30 PM (Nwg0u) That was a major plot point of Stephen Hunter's first Bob Lee Swagger novel, Point of Impact. Except that it wasn't a sabot, it was a paper-patched bullet (previously fired from one of Swagger's rifles), reloaded with the paper patch and fired from a rifle with a custom, slightly oversized bore. All in order to set up Swagger as a patsy in a political assassination. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at October 21, 2016 10:48 PM (LuZz8) 114

keep his cushy job to say that the press will come down hard on a President Hillary. --- The press will be rough with Hillary to correct covering for her sins just like they did with Obama. Posted by: Methos at October 21, 2016 11:03 PM (3Liv/) 186
Goldberg said the State Media will keep a President Hillary in check
I thought that was going to be a humor piece. Posted by: t-bird at October 21, 2016 11:03 PM (TqmC9) 187
Goldberg's conclusion to Liberal Fascism was that Hillary was heavily statist and had a religious zeal to her approach in politics. Hillary hasn't gotten any less fascist in the past eight years - in fact she's gotten a lot worse since her failed 2008 run. She outright told us all what she thinks the Supreme Court should be - an Iranian-style Guardian Council of leftist orthodoxy. (see instapundit today)
Goldberg is a total disgrace. Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at October 21, 2016 11:03 PM (6FqZa) 188

The thread about hobbies and new activities yesterday was fascinating. I can add one to my list: re-learning morse code. A member of our local ham radio club suffered a stroke a few days ago. He can't really speak or write at the moment, one arm is almost useless, and it's too soon for a prognosis. One of the members brought him a CW sounder as a last resort. He grabbed the sounder and was able to tap out 'thank you'. He started teaching the nurses some basic words so he can answer their questions. As the member put it: now we know Terry (the patient) is 'still there'.
My CW skills are down to not much. That starts changing this coming week. Posted by: JTB at October 21, 2016 11:10 PM (V+03K) 226

Speaking of movies, I've noticed a new trend. I watched the new Rocky Horror. (The good news: it's not horrible but tbe original is better.) Riffraff is white and his sister Magenta is black. Similarly, Eddie is white and his uncle is black. Add that to Fantastic Four where the Invisible Girl is white and her brother the Human Torch is black. I've seen this in operas as well but I thought they just hired the best singer. Now it seems to be a thing.

Her husband left her and their two kids and moved to Texas to be with a woman he found online because Sue had "become such a downer." Lots of narcissistic, selfish people around these days who don't want to stick around when the going gets tough - and not all of them are female. Our wonderful post-modern society teaches women that they can have it all, when we've never, ever told men that they can have it all. We've always told men that they have to make certain sacrifices. But women? No, they don't even have to tolerate their husbands no longer being new and fresh and exciting for them. Those butterflies in the stomach have gone away? Don't go into it expecting great changes--marry the one you like NOW, not the one you expect him or her to become. I've been married to my bestie for almost 19years, and my mom and dad have been married for 63 years and are inseparable. It can be done. Crap will ensue. Get over it. Solve it. Bend a bit. Quit bitching and start fixing. It's hard work, so do it. It IS worth it. Oh, and don't marry a psycho if you can swing it. If you do, none of the above applies to you. Her first marriage didn't work out so well (abuse), and her biological parents got divorced when she was young (I had to sit next to her dad and his wife, that got awkward), but she married a guy she'd known for thirteen years at a very Christian wedding. I think they'll be just fine given the way they look at each other and with all the support they're getting from church and family.

Heartbreak Ridge the only Eastwood movie I actively dislike. It just pretty much sucked from concept, to script, to casting, staging, effects, acting, directing the works.
There was about as much military authenticity to the movie as a John Swift Boat Kerry convention salute. Now, not every movie can be Act of Valor or Lone Survivor, but I think on that one, Eastwood's budget for a Military film consultant was only enough to hire an empty chair. Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at October 21, 2016 11:52 PM (7ZXKG) Well ... in the old, old days there was the same sort of deal, but only with big, hulking, single systems, and that was called "time-sharing". Distributed systems (running efficiently) are pretty new. Probably 10 or 15 years for the good commercial applications. Actually, laying the foundations for much of distributed computing (a branch off of parallel computation) is what google's original contribution was and why they took over the search space so rapidly. All addiction is treated in the same basic way.
And no treatment works if the addict isn't the one who seeks treatment of their own volition. Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at October 21, 2016 11:49 PM (7ZXKG) While I agree with you, unfortunately, shop-a-holics are treated as a punch line to a joke or some sort of misogyny. Far too many do not see it as an addiction, unlike gambling the rent money away, etc. Casinos do ads warning people to bet with their heads, not over it, and if you have a problem call the Gambling Hotline at XXX-XXX-XXXX. Do you see signs in Macy's warning about the dangers of getting in over your head while shopping? Some addictions are taken more seriously than others. SMFH, I don't know you, and while I lurk here I don't often comment; but I have to say that both it is real dusty here, and that you are one of the good ones. Blessings upon you.
I originally went through the thread to talk about the signs of someone quitting. I have a beloved niece who was the assistant to one of the County Commissioners in a nearby, largely urban county. As in trusted to represent her Commissioner in policy and operational matters. Her original commissioner left to take a higher paying private sector job and my niece was transferred to another Commissioner, who does not believe that women can handle any authority and made her into a highly paid but glorified receptionist. Her response? She went and finished her master's degree and then went job hunting. She is now the Director of Policy for the Regional Council of Governments. More pay, higher rank, and the a**hole County Commissioner has to step warily around her. One sign of people quitting is to have a stupid boss. If the workers are trying to improve themselves, it may mean that they are ready to leave as soon as they can. Stupid bosses want to surround themselves with less capable people. The good ones will leave as soon as they can. Posted by: Subotai Bahadur at October 21, 2016 11:56 PM (ReH3h) 368

David wasn't home, nothing ever came of it. Had the stars been aligned differently, I could have been the guy that took the swan dive off the helicopter. I used to pull midnight shift duty at the (then) Gate Six, which was the "back of the base" single-lane entrance to Lackland AFB, but abutted the fence at the (then) Kelly AFB.
Just to be clear, Lackand and Kelly AFBs were separated only by a chain link fence in those days. Now, there's no "Kelly" AFB, as it's been rolled-into the Lackland AFB complex, and half of the former Kelly AFB is now a civilian logistics center. But, I digress. I had one of the best seats in the house to watch C-130s practicing "combat approaches" to the Kelly runway. And yes, they had the props already changing pitch to reverse thrust before their main gear actually hit the runway. I'd say about 20 ft. AGL, you'd notice the change in sound from the engines/props, and in the time it took the prop blades to rotate pitch from thrust to reverse-thrust, the mains had kissed concrete, and the reverse thrust was already coming into effect. At a landing speed, that ballet of prop and touchdown, likely shortened the landing roll by an airplane length, or three. But those pilots tossed those planes around, sideslipping 'em like a Piper Cub coming into a jungle clearing. Pretty damned impressive, that. The takeoffs were equally impressive, albeit not quite as dramatic as the landings. But that big ol' fat lookin' Herc., seems to have some fighter DNA in it's 'luminum soul. I also thought "Hamburger Hill" was pretty good; a Nam flick without hype, imagine that. Ditto with Brian DePalma's early 1990s Nam flick, "Casualties Of War" (which was a flop despite having both Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn in lead roles).
Didn't hurt IMHO that the hero of Casualties Of War is depicted as a devout Lutheran. Posted by: qdpsteve at October 22, 2016 12:13 AM (NlMkN) 428
A lot of you guys seem to be fixated on cloud storage. Much of the use of clouds is in distributed computing, not storage. Storage is just one teeny, weeny little part of a cloud service. There are things that you can do with a cloud that you just can't do at home or in your office, without a gigantic outlay of funds and a good few years of intense study (not to mention some ridiculous outlay for software).
Cloud computing is not just about storage. In fact, it's least about storage. It's about distributed computing and only paying for the CPU cycles that you actually use. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at October 22, 2016 12:13 AM (zc3Db) 429

There's no reason for anyone not to understand that they have to back up everything they think is important. For me, I would never use cloud storage for anything. I like my stuff. idealistic that a man truly in love, and I think they hold on to the pain longer than most women. And perhaps lose their perspective. Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at October 22, 2016 12:24 AM (7ZXKG) ============= Maybe that's the case. Love is risky business. A friend of mine told me once that I should always hold back and gauge "his" level of emotional investment before giving 100% of my own. "How do you do that?!" I asked. As though love is a matter of shifting gears and you have the option of backing off of 4th when you're at xRPM. Which is why it was so, so lovely that Mr. Deplorable was all in from the start. He never even proposed, you know. We were talking on the phone one night and he said, "Later, when we're married..." I have no idea what he said after that because my brain froze. Yeah, it was an unusual situation. He set the tone of our relationship from the beginning - affection, warmth, humor, affection, passion, humor etc etc etc. We never ever fell into that default sniping at home after a rough day. It was glorious. Posted by: Miley, Duchess of the Deplorable Standard Rednecks at October 22, 2016 12:34 AM (BcNLK) 503

Yea, a lot of women want men with money. That is absolutely true and I doubt they care much about the penis.
But every man I ever met wants a drop dead gorgeous woman who's a nymphomaniac. Oh, they think they have realistic expectations, but to a man, they all pass up the dumpy but perfectly nice women who are very domestic and would make excellent wives. Same damn thing, just different preferences. Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at October 22, 2016 12:34 AM (7ZXKG) 505

No matter with search engine you use, it is a distributed system that runs your search request in parallel among its many individual systems and spits back some data for you. That is one simple example of a cloud service that everyone uses on a daily basis.
So, whenever you run a search you are using someone's cloud services. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at October 22, 2016 12:30 AM (zc3Db) And that is something I call up, use, and shut down. Tammy, true that a lot of men want a drop-dead gorgeous bimbo who will make love to them all night, then magically turn into a pepperoni pizza at 5am.
And I *know* there's a lot of good women still out there. I just have the strong impression, most of them aren't in SoCal. Part of the problem is that women in big metro areas are also so incredibly wary/suspicious of any man who finds them attractive, yet they'll abandon their fears in a heartbeat if the guy even seems wealthy. Women, from a man's perspective, are nuts. You don't make a bit of sense. Men, from a woman's perspective, is immature. Neither of those states are a 100%, 24/7, never changing certainty. So let me get this straight. Supposedly women can do just as well as men in all areas and phases of the military, but MTF transgenders can opt out of their physical fitness tests because they fail them.

Especially, since in my own personal life, I know of marriages which have failed because the guy decided he wanted a newer, younger trophy wife. My best friend - a beautiful woman - had a miscarriage when she was 39 and became very depressed. Her husband left her and their two kids and moved to Texas to be with a woman he found online because Sue had "become such a downer." Lots of narcissistic, selfish people around these days who don't want to stick around when the going gets tough - and not all of them are female. Wasp-waisted rubber biscuits, with one mounting plate attached to the exhaust header pipe on each head, and the other to the frame, and both with their central axis horizontal, so the dead weight of the engine puts both metal-to-rubber bonds in constant shear. The day is not far off (It's actually here already, in a way.) that the entirety of one's computing experience will be "in the cloud" -- operating system, drives, files, all that! One's "computer" will consist of little more than a screen, keyboard and mouse, and a wireless radio... Posted by: Zettai Ryoiki, Aware and Noncompliant at October 21, 2016 11:51 PM (kP16F) That is true. There's already quite a bit of cloud-based software. My employer before I retired had ported its flagship software to the cloud. It requires some heavy-duty servers to run and while large organizations will still run their own servers, having the option to use a cloud version opens up the software to smaller businesses that otherwise wouldn't have the resources to buy and maintain the hardware and software. I'll share this with you - my husband came to me (in spirit, as it were) a few months after he passed. There was a paranormal sign, even, which simply amazed me since I'd never witnessed such a thing before. I could feel his presence around me, and then sort of pouring into me. I felt a tingling, and then such a rush of joy that I couldn't have been sad at that moment, no way. He imparted something to me that I'll save for another time. Oh, man, I dunno what I should have done.
1 o'clock, I went up to the bar to have a beer before bed. As I'm leaving the bar at 1:45, I see a young boy, probably 12 years old although he later claimed to be 15, walking along the street towards me. He's wearing a white polo shirt, blue gym shorts and tube socks, no shoes.of course I stop him to talk. He has no apparent injuries, he's clear and coherent, keep claiming that he's fine. I tried everything I knew how to do to get his real situation out of him but I couldn't. He was polite. He also didn't belong on the street at 2 AM. He said he was just walking to a convenience store and I told him there was one right up the road, I was hoping he'd go there so as to have a fixed location. He was obviously cold, his arms were inside his shirt, but he wouldn't tell me anything, it wouldn't let me give him a ride anywhere (probably smart, he doesn't know me), he just politely declined and deflected my concern. What could I do? I let him walk away towards the convenience store and immediately called 911 with a full description of him and the situation, but that seems so inadequate. Again, what can I do, Hit him over the head and drag him to the police station or something? I don't know. And it's bothering me. A lot. Posted by: Weirddave at October 22, 2016 02:27 AM (Ga9pP) 641

One other thing. There was an adult couple, male and female, who were walking along the other side of the street roughly parallel to the boy. Before I approached him I called out to them and ask if he was with them, and they said no. They walked on, but after I spoke to the boy, I drove down the street in that direction and he had run up and joined them. That doubt, that he was actually with them is probably what led me to leave it in the hands of the police. Still, it's just not right, there's something funny about the whole situation, but I don't know what I could or should have done differently

I believe Willy started out from square One after the war building these scooter cars. It had a 2-stroke engine, and reverse was obtained by stopping the engine, and starting it up backwards, with a reverse starter. The car I got to drive had a non-working reverse, so you stuck a leg out, and pushed. I remember working a 2-stroke Villiers engine on an English lawn mower, and with the timing set just right, you could make it oscillate - half a turn clockwise, pop!, half a turn counterclockwise, pop!, and on and on. About a pop and a half per second. Would sit and do that all day. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 22, 2016 02:39 AM (CUYn5) 649

As a corollary to what I was saying before about my experience with
dating sites... I flirt with women around here sometimes, but I don't expect it to lead to anything. So, ladies, if I throw the occasional mash post your way, it doesn't really mean anything; I'm just having a little fun. ========== Nothing wrong with having fun! I will say this, DPW - God's imagination is much greater than mine. Back in the winter of 1995, I threw myself into a Swedish snowbank at midnight, sobbing, thinking that I could never be happy again. I was 40 and there was nothing but misery as far as the eye could see. Needless to say, many adventures ensued that I never could have foreseen, and in the end I had many, many good times. Then I was reunited with Mr. Deplorable, who was my first love ("the one who got away"), after being out of touch for over 25 years. God gave us eight years of bliss (interspersed with some strain, of course, since he was caring for 3 teens and dealing with divorce from his crazy ex). Point being, you have no idea what might be coming your way. You just need to keep the door open to possibility, that's all.
