Sunday Night Overnight Open Thread (10/16/16) [Mis. Hum.]

Tomorrow, October 17th is Bosses Day.

happy-boss-day-to-the-ring-leader-of-a-dysfunctional-circus-we-like-to-call-coworkers-a5c28.png

So Horde is this a National Day that you celebrate? What has been your experience with Bosses? Are you a boss? Have you ever been a boss? Do you want to be a boss? Have you ever had a boss that made a lasting impression?

9 great bosses.

Make that 10. Ace is the bestest boss evah!!!!!

A talent for sloth.

The landscape where I work, in far southwest New Mexico, is one of the most fire-prone areas in America. I look out over a stretch of country with nearly a million acres of roadless wilderness, where an annual upsurge of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico combines with the summertime heat of the Chihuahuan Desert to create tens of thousands of lightning strikes. In an arid land with brief but intense storm activity, wildfire is no aberration.

Ranger Gord.

Today, October 16th is National Liqueur Day.Fancy drinking Morons have been appreciating today. If you aren't a sophisticated Moron maybe you can still land a bottle of some liqueur.

Planned Parenthood is 100 years old today.

As an avid sportsman I can never understand why a fisherman or hunter would vote for a Democrat. From unfriendly judges to land confiscation the Dems are no friend to sportsmen.

“Closing 60 percent of Hawaii’s waters to commercial fishing, when science is telling us that it will not lead to more productive local fisheries, makes no sense,” Edwin Ebisui Jr., chairman of WPRFMC, said in a statement. “Today is a sad day in the history of Hawaii’s fisheries and a negative blow to our local food security.”

Hawaii is not the only state to have its authority to govern millions of acres of land usurped by the national government. In a series of moves, the Obama administration seized control of nearly 100 million acres in Alaska over the past year -- an amount of land comparable to the size of New Mexico.

Well we all know about Trigglypuff. The United State's well known Special Snowflake. The U.S.A. is not the only nation with college age Snowflakes.

It appears that there has been a world wide blizzard and Special Snowflakes are everywhere. The latest outrage affecting these thoughtless shit-for-brain idiots, Science.

A student leader said “science as a whole is a product of Western modernity, and the whole thing should be scratched off”.

She said “we have to restart science from an African perspective, from our perspective, of how we experienced science”.

She went on to describe how people in KwaZulu-Natal believe that black magic can be used to “send lightning” to strike someone. “Can you explain that science?” she asked.

#ScienceMustFall was the top trending topic on Twitter on Friday, with people ridiculing the statements made by the student leader.

“The sane among us need to get off this planet ASAP before gravity is decolonised by the #sciencemustfall zealots,” said Twitter user BabaBlackSheep.

Our safe space has been intruded by complete idiots. Heaven forbid you dress up for Halloween. Trick or Treat now a microagression?

In 1940 college age American citizens joined, fought and died in the Royal Air Force. What would these college age students have said to these students of today? h/t via Twitter submission

Speaking of science. Our science lesson today is. Do not vacuum gasoline. Don't. Do. It.

We've heard about the gun violence in America's cities. The typical leftie response goes something like this, "More background checks. Close this loophole, close that loophole."

In cities across the country leaders are using data to address gun violence.

Other communities offer their own examples of how data can provide insights to improve public safety. In Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, an analysis of crime data last year showed that car burglaries were a leading source of reported gun thefts in the city—a trend that cities have been noticing nationwide. To better keep guns out of dangerous hands, a local criminal justice agency responded by designing a public information campaign that encourages car owners to lock their cars to protect guns and other valuables from theft, and it’s drawn the attention of both law enforcement and the public to this often-ignored source of guns used in crimes.

An interesting read. Correct data, in the right hands could be a step in the right direction. But as we all know there are countless reasons why there is gun violence in the cities. Until we change the hearts and minds of folks who have a propensity to be criminals not much will change.

When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns.

Obviously where there is a will there is a way. If the prisoner is indignant, where are the funds from the State and The Feds? The Horde probably has ideas to make sure the perp remains behinds bars. h/t ibguy

Nothing says solidarity with Syria like cooking and eating.

The charity dinner event takes place in London on 31 October in collaboration with Suitcase magazine and NEXTGen London, Unicef UK’s young professional movement, and is already sold out. One of the chefs, Ottolenghi, an Israeli-born British chef whose business partner is Palestinian Sami Tamimi, said the food culture of the Middle East was hugely important, and that no one was forgetting the struggles going on inside Syria as people tried to find enough food just to sustain themselves and their families.

“Sami and I – like so many chefs – live to eat,” he said. “It bends the mind to think of how many children in Syria are, on the other hand, eating to live. The stakes are so high.

“Somewhere in between these two crazy extremes we are looking forward to an amazing evening of feasting. The night will be spent eating and, in so doing, raising money to help the lives of the next generation in Syria.”

Didn't get enough food ideas and recipes today from CBD? Now you can make perfect pancakes. No more trips to Waffle House of IHOP for you.

Black Lives Matter supporter and supporter of charter schools. Or how one can have it's cake and eat it too. Until the inner city schools improve, their lives are not going to improve.

80 In 2005 I was taking a class on emergency and disaster management. Katrina hit first day of class. We had a topic.

We had one African American young man with, I don't know what to call his hairstyle, lots of braids, like dreads, except clean.

Anyway, one class, he decides in the middle to just go off on "why do we have to call them refugees" thing. Now, mind you, we had not talked about refugees in the class the whole time, much less this lesson.

But he maumaued us all into listening, because he had heard on the news that George Bush was the devil and used the racist term refugees. It had never been a racist term before, but there we were. After his rant, awkward silence. Then the professor says okay and we go back to talking about emergency management.

Posted by: Puddleglum at October 16, 2016 10:26 PM (NGd+i)

One story in particular. I was shaking.

Infant girl was raped and left in a field to die. Police helicopter spotted her. She lived. She has aids now. Even if she didn't, she could never have children. Her hips were dislocated and shattered. It took 10+ surgeries to put her back together.

Our church got to "meet" her one sunday morning via Skype. About 10 now. So sweet. Such a pretty smile.

Someone deserves to die very slowly for that atrocity.

100 Newton also did not "out of nowhere decided that gravity existed"

Actually, he pretty much did. That's what genius is all about, and Newton was pretty much one of the 5 greatest geniuses ever to have existed.

The article cutting on the #sciencemustfall idiots takes a wrong turn when it tries to deny that ideas just come to geniuses, pretty much out of the blue. If it were any other way then pretty much everyone would be able to be a super-genius, just by following whatever steps it took to get these brilliant ideas. But there are no such steps. Insight at such a level is not something that is available to any but a very few - very few who have ever existed. Insight has no procedure defining it. It just exists for those lucky enough to have it.

I read a piece by an expat who said that around his part of Africa, hypodermic injections were *the* white man's magic.

No matter what the local black villagers had come down with, including a whole lot of stuff that was incurable by Western medicine, they were convinced that a simple shot would make them right. And they flocked to him.

So he had a long jolly queue of them out the door of the hut every week, all obligingly waiting to receive a few ml of neutral saline intramuscularly, of course after the elaborate ritual of arm swabbing. All of his "patients" went away happy.

And, hey, maybe there were slightly fewer toddler rapes and albino butcherings due to this gentle subterfuge.

My first boss after leaving academia later became the boss of the first Mrs. Krebs. He was a great guy.

A later boss of mine became so immediately after being the boss of the current Mrs. Krebs. As a matter of fact, she and I were at a conference in New Orleans when I learned of the changeover. He was a self-absorbed dick and everyone agreed that he was a dick. I received both condolences and jeers for the switch. Easily the worst boss that I ever had.

Yes, burnout was rampant at my place. When I started, we could have 2 weeks of unpaid vacation a year. I never took it because my husband was self-employed and never got vacay, so why bother? Ironically, they took away all vacations (except for management, of course) right after my husband started working for someone else and got vacation time. So for 7 years we never had a vacation together. If we had to be off work for longer than 3 days, we would lose our standing with the company and may be even demoted. Horrid!
I hope your daughter is doing well. Even with all the garbage the management put us through we did solid work, and I'm very proud of the way our clients turned out. I hope your experience was similar.

The buildup for releases tomorrow and Tuesday is going to be huge. Also, Monday and Tuesday are supposed to see some new O'Keefe videos, that he has been hyping to the stars. (According to a reddit chat, O'Keefe indicated that his group founded a dummy corp in Europe and then used the shell entity to push the notion that they wanted to donate large sums of dark money to the democrats. He also indicated that they were actually invited to the White House).

It might sound ridiculous (and it is) but this is the logical inference from the SCOTASS' ridiculous decisions on the press printing classified material. Well ... either what this CNN douche claimed or everyone is allowed to see everything they want (because the media organizations are allowed to see everything, as per the SCOTASS, and then decide what is really important to keep secret and what isn't).

This all goes back to insane SCOTASS decisions - as many idiotic ideas do - regarding national security and media organizations.

No one would have know but she had that puffy hair that you can tell when it is slept on.

I also was a supervisor, had 5 under me. I don't think I did great at it and I really didn't like it. I would rather just code.

I like bosses that point me in a direction, stand back and let me go. Run interference and back me up if there are complaints.

The SCOTASS has decided, in its boundless wisdom, that the press orgs have a "right" to examine any national security info and decide which has public interest in its publishing and which doesn't. They have put the press in charge of deciding what is in the national interest to have published and what isn't. It is insane, but that's how their decisions have gone, without exception. At practice for one race, riding with a broken radius, he pulled in and cut off the cast, because it made riding more difficult.

During a Middle Weight CCS race at Roebling Road, I was amazed while passing a guy on an RZ350, I realized that he had no left hand. I noticed that the clutch lever was rotated 180 deg. so that he could poke at it with his stump.

Speaking of bosses...my boss has been called up to go to Afcrapistan in April, I think. He is in the Army Reserves and I guess he has to go back. He's had at least 2 deployments as active military already. I think he is trying to get out of it, but I haven't heard the results of that yet.

Plenty of US boots on the ground over yonder. Two months ago, special forces guy came to one of the small ranges just as my range officer buddy and I were about to close up for the day. He had his nephew with him. My buddy exchanged a few words, then declared "we're still open" (my buddy recognized some insignia on his hat, he was in the same service my buddy had been). Guy said he was getting his first team (as the senior NCO) and was heading over yonder within the month.

And last week ran into someone whose USMC son was heading over for the second time in a fairly short period.

Dumb Power is costly. But unserious electorates seem to prefer it.

find out what toys turn her on. My Kitteh loves milk caps and milk rings. thats what she loves to play fetch with. She chirps so happily when she sees me bring out the "pen" that makes the red dot.
Moms cat hates the red dot. It scares him. he will hide. Every kitteh is different, so you will have to see what she likes. But the laser pointer dot is a dollar at the dollar tree. Also foil wrappers from burritos make intriguing balls. Also the burrito smell helps. see if she wants to play, and she will i have a whole mob of little orange guys who are nuts for the wand toys with fuzzy snakes on the end. Just like people they are motivated by different things. You can do it. But be careful with string. If they eat it, it can foul up their guts and its expensive to fix and can kill them if you dont figure out whats wrong in time.

i dunno if you saw the nic, but "Viking" is back commenting. I found it amusing. I wondered if it was the same person, sort of idly. They might find me a different mark to rip on, since Grim is home.

Also Grimmy got a new Kitty since the untimely passing of the Incomparable Mo. Her name is Silverfish and she is Cecils and Jellybean's cousin and Muniere's kid. Shes pretty fantastic. We had to take her back from the last home since the lady has a brain tumor and needs to let got of most of her pets I found a home for 2 of them, but she was just too active for the old lady, though her brother was perfect for the woman's husband. So back she came, and Grimmy asked if she could stay so we could have at least one normal pet. He helped bottle feed this kitten so i am not surprised he wanted to keep her. She was always his favorite so i am gonna use the Jackson Galaxy method and incrementally introduce the kittehs, using delicious foods as a social lubricant. I will keep you all updated.

I don't really look in much during the day, and a lot of ONTs have been something-fests lately, so I wouldn't know.

There are an awful lot of vendettas. I get it, people are angry, and people have good reasons, but I see very little practical movement and a lot of GAAAAAAAAH, so that's that.

For similar reasons I don't look at other media much, but I will look for Silverfish pics when I get a chance.

485 You know, when I was college, my professors, physics, were mostly lefties. But they were old school type lefties. They didn't believe in "woo" as we call it now, and they couldn't stand all this "new age" (pronounce that to rhyme with "sewage" ). Of particular disgust to them was the trend to make quantum theory some sort of mystical woo, with the Buddhist tie in that were in the popular sphere then.

I believe their ilk has been displaced now -- or that they're so scared of the prevailing "reign of terror" that they don't talk mush. 492 457 This has nothing to do with any previous thread. I hate that the NCAA requires visiting teams to wear white jerseys. This rule went into effect when games began to be televised and only black and white broadcasts were available. Let me see OSU scarlet against {sc}UM blue, ND's Blue or Green against SC{um} garnet, Texas burnt orange against OU crimson. Last I checked this is the 21st Century and we all have Hi-Def Big Screens. Let us enjoy them. School Colors Matter, dagnabit!
Posted by: Locke Common at October 17, 2016 01:03 AM (OlGsT)

NCAA changed the rules a few years ago, mainly because of the USC-UCLA game.

To do so, the colors must be very different, so the OU-UT would probably not cut it.

Also, since the home team is required to wear the "dark" color, it is up to them to allow the visiting team if they can wear their "dark" (i.e. "Home") jersey.

Schools now try to schedule games against schools in areas where they want to recruit students or players from. Or on occasion, where they have a lot of alumni. It's why the schools from Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana all make the trek to Jerry World in Dallas to play a game there every year. Lots of out of state students with dads and/or moms with deeeeep pockets.

BYU is one of the best examples. They schedule games on the west coast, east coast, and down in Texas. That way the school gets exposure in all those areas.

Notre Dame plays Stanford and USC every year because it gives them a game on the west coast. The reason they didn't join the Big10 was because they would rather play games at schools located from New York to Florida for more exposure in those areas.

525 Gross out Trigger Warning:

Jock itch/crotch rot and athlete's foot are caused by the same damn fungus, a fungus among us.

Due to this damnable rheumatoid arthritis, my right hip was destroyed and I had to have it replaced in 2012. It was so bad, bone against bone, that the bone was being destroyed, "absorbed" back into the body.

Now, that caused my right leg to noticeably shorten. It was close to an inch. That made the crease in your skin in the groin where the thigh connects turn into a little fold.

Well, the crotch rot stuff got in there, and it got bad. And stunk to high heaven. Run your finger through there and then smell it and it would knock me over.

Once that stuff gets established, it can be very difficult to kill. To this day, after every shower, I have to rub a little Lotrimin or equivalent right up there. If I don't it will come back in a week or two.

I hope the little buggers don't develop resistance to the Lotrimin, or I may be just screwed.

That would just be my luck. To be killed by super crotch rot, resistance to all forms of treatment known to man.

Referring to all of that Russia crap? Yeah. I agree. It can't possibly end to our advantage. Why? Because they want it.

Why do they want it? Well, if they (by some weird chance) win, they get to impose their globalist way on Russia, which is notable for having banned George Soros and all of his organizations from the country.

If they lose, American prestige takes another hit, and a lot of good people die.

Or, in short, heads they win, tails we lose.

566 Third Jersey:

"A third jersey, alternate jersey, third kit or alternate uniform is a jersey or uniform that a sports team wear in games instead of its home outfit or its away outfit, often when the colors of two competing teams' other uniforms are too similar to distinguish easily. Alternate jerseys are also a means for professional sports organizations to generate revenue, by sales to fans....

Extra alternate uniforms or fourth/fifth kits are not commonly used, but are sometimes required when teams' other uniforms cause color clashes, or the uniforms are unavailable to use. In cases where teams have worn more than three kits in the same season, the extra kits were usually recycled from previous seasons.

Third-choice jerseys or uniforms are used in all four North American major professional sports leagues, and in college sports.

Third kits are commonplace in European association football and in some European rugby union clubs....."

Population swaps. Trade them for people who want to live free without a government constantly up their ass. Strangest thing I ever saw watching a football match on tv. This was around 1999. Manchester United was at Southampton. Both teams' kits are predominantly red. So United wore their road grey kit. At the half, United was losing 3-0. When the teams came out for the second half, United had a change of kit and wore a blue one. United won the second half 0-2, losing the game 3-2. Ever since that match, United has never worn grey since, just the blue as an alternative kit.

I have never seen, before or since, a team in any sport change their uniforms to a different color at the half. Put on new uniforms due to playing in a mud bowl, sure, but never into another, different colored one.

614 Mornin'

Sprained an Achilles' tendon, the pain woke me up early.

I was at my last job for 9 years and went through 4 bosses, each of them one of those typical middle-managers just trying to bluff their way through as long as they can without anyone figuring out that they're total frauds. All of them rewarded ass-kissing and shit all over those of us who actually did all the work.

Been at my current job a year and a half. My bosses here are part-owners of the company, and both of them are extremely competent and professional. No complaints at all. They actually reward hard work and appreciate competence among their staff-what a concept. And what a nice change.

And since we work from home, there's none of that buying-a-gift-for-bosses-day crapola.

627 Good Morning Morons. Today is Monday, October 17, 2016. On this day in 1781 British General Charles, Earl Cornwallis surrendered to American and French forces at the Siege of Yorktown. This effectively ended the British attempt to reign in the Americans and end the revolution.

631 And I see we are back on pancakes again this morning. Lets not forget that the secret to good pancakes is good syrup and that means genuine maple syrup goodness.

As for the pancakes themselves I have made them just about every way it is possible to make them. I have done them from 100% scratch using flour etc, I have done them from a variety of mixes including some high priced yuppie crap wifey bought one time, and I have done them from Bisquick. None taste any better than the other. So have settled on Bisquick which is much easier all the way around, just add eggs and milk and away you go.

Sure you can get exotic mixes like "Old Bob's pure country flap jack mix" or Grand Paree Original Francwaa" mix but they are rarely even as good as standard stuff.

Yep. A Hillary Presidency basically makes her level of outrageous, flagrant corruption the new standard, and takes the Rule of Law out back and buries it in a shallow grave.

We will live in a world where laws are only for the little people, and if there isn't a move to resist it or secede, I'll be headed for another hemisphere.

Worst boss I ever had was a Haitian who was determined to turn his department into a model of diversity. Every Anglo-Saxon employee was driven out first, for light or altogether spurious causes. And although I've got the straight black hair from the native side of the family, and all of my paperwork says mixed or other, my ghost-white skin meant I got stuck cruel and inhuman schedules and drudge-duties until I quit a few months later. I was the last one to get that treatment, all of the new hires were tokens.

I gave 3 years of my life to that company, went above and beyond at every chance I was given, and got run out by a racist.

In this case, it meant tokenism. It was like his goal was to make it a living diversity poster. You know, one of those ones where the only white person is female. One of each, obviously recruited for looks and not talent, as they were all dog-awful at their jobs and not particularly interested in learning them. I had do everything that resembled hard work for my last couple of months there.

I really don' think that's true, Vic. While it has gotten ridiculous under the Choomster, back n the 90's, when we wanted to fire a guy named Mohammed or a black woman, we had to 'document, document, document'. Even then, the HR dweebs were scared of their own shadow, even though employment was 'at will'; HR never had the will.

While true that the calls for diversity and civil suits from people like the NAACP have been going on for decades they feds had not been coming around and aggravating the shit out of everybody until the Choom showed up.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at October 17, 2016 06:21 AM (mpXpK)

651 What I saw was every time we fired a black they would run to the NAACP and cry "discrimination". The NAACP would come around and threaten a lawsuit and get up with the racists in the DOJ if there was a Democrat admin.

The company would give the fired black a couple of thousand bucks as a buyoff and to sign a no-suit agreement. That was a lot cheaper than bringing in lawyers.

I was just offshore San Francisco in 1989 We got all the Goodyear blimp TV feeds the rest of the country could not.

We came in the next day. Not much damage could be seen with the 30 power big-eyes. Our pier in Oakland had some wide cracks around my car, and we were directly in line with the Nimitz Freeway and the span of the Bay Bridge knocked down.

I was glad martial law was not declared, and we could just listen to the storied. Everyone was a very polite drive for the next three days. And I heard "The earth moved for us" stories for a month.

I mean, you can fcuking HEAR where they switch to the live feed whenever a speaker comes to the mic. Any child over the age of three knows this. I thought he had to be joking. Then I remembered this is Jharles after all.
