Post-Debate Thread: Your Thoughts, Media Spin

I thought he won, though narrowly. (I thought Hillary won the last one -- narrowly.)

He was calmer and seemed to emulate Mike Pence's example of staying light on defense and heavy on offense.

Real simple: his answer to every question posted to him should be, "Hillary... " then recite verbatim the stuff the FBI asked her. Then shut the fuck up.

Imagine: "Hillary, do you recall your intellgence briefings or are you still suffering from your traumatic brain injury?"... then stand there and stare at her.

159 No surprise by how the questions were themselves so tilted, e.g. how would "make the rich pay their fair share" and how to "solve the humanitarian crisis in Syria"

Donald needs to do more to change the terms of reference and go after the premise directly, but I'm not sure he is that kind of thinker. He needs a few direct, if not Thatcherite responses to the effect that if you are so obsessed with "going after the rich" you will impoverish the entire nation.

He also needs to be direct to that you can't solve every "humanitarian crisis" without inserting the US military into every civil war, and that every war, unfortunately, has a component of a humanitarian crisis. Would be a perfect segue to the central issue that our policy should always be determined, first, second and last by what is in America's interest.

He sort of, kind of, made some of those points, but it just pains me to see such broad opportunities go untaken.

Overall, he did much better than expected on the "aren't you the greatest wimmen-hater crap" and Anderson's attempts to force him to admit to "sexual assault"

I give Trump an edge in the debate, but he needs to move the needle more than that to overcome a relentless MSM/pop culture/DNC/Soros/internationalist machine (+voter fraud) to win.

The fact is, this election is between two major party candidates that over half the population absolutely loathes and does not trust. Trump is spending all his time explaining himself. Stop. His supporters don't care and his detractors aren't going to buy any of it.

Every single word out of his and his teams mouths at this point should be in the form of questions:
"Has Hillary recovered sufficiently from her claimed brain injury to recall her instructions on handling classified intelligence yet?"

"When Hillary said there were no classified emails on her server, why did she lie?"

"Hillary, can you explain why you claimed Benghazi was due to a YouTube video?"

"Hillary, can you tell us how defending a child rapist helped girls and women?"

"Hillary, can you elaborate on what you meant by "bimbo squads" and the remarks you made about the women your serial adulterer, accused rapist, and impeached husband's victims? Follow up, will you apologize for the remarks you made about these women, calling them liars when it has now been proven that they were telling the truth about their affairs with your husband?"

I'm glad you bring up the Inchon landing, as it was a masterstroke by MacArthur done at his insistence despite the opposition from other military leaders given the risk involved. It effectively relieved the Pusan Perimeter and forced the Korean army into complete retreat given their threatened position.

That they escape back to Korea is regrettable, but it is more than compensated by what was gained. You cannot fault MacArthur for the failures of his subordinate.

418 Here's a free Talking Point:

Hillary claims I've incited violence at my rallies.
I have only stood up for my right to defend myself, and for my supporters to defend themselves, to be able to hold a political rally, and to speak, when outsiders have violently tried to shut it down.

You want to talk about inciting violence? Entire cities in the United States: Ferguson, Baltimore, Charlotte have erupted into flames because the Democratic party and Hillary in particular has endorsed a race separatist movement called "Black Lives Matter" that is tearing our country apart.

Who loses? Everyone, and most directly the people who live in the cities that are burned down by agitators who have no sense of fairness or real justice, but who are looking for an excuse to vent racial hatred while feeling justified in doing so.

I believe that all lives matter, and I want to be President for all Americans. All Americans need law and order, most of all in the inner cities, etc.

Its not that hard.

Its good to go after Hillary, get better zingers in, slam Bill as a worse sex criminal than he, but Trumps people need to work in some of the broader issues of why Hillary is the wrong direction with more clarity and discipline.

He can win as the change of direction candidate, but you have to point out the change.

433 With regards to the Holocaust comparison, the issue is whether the US should do something to rescue escaping refugees, unlike what the US did at the beginning of the Holocaust in rescuing escaping Jews from Europe, which is, very little sadly. That is the nature of the Holocaust comparison. Not a literal comparison to the Final Solution.

Posted by: chemjeff at October 09, 2016 11:07 PM (uAvJJ)

There is absolutely no comparison between teh Syrian savages and the Holocaust. None. Zero. Zilch.

If Syria weren't busy killing each other right now they'd all be busy helping to kill everyone around them. Better to have them kill each other with Russian help. And there is no refugee problem from Syria. They are not refugees. Syria is a shithole because arabs like living in shitholes, which is why the whole arab world is a big shithole, even given the trillions of free dollars that have gone through their hands and left nothing of value there.

Comparing arabs in Syria to Jews in WWII ... Just pathetic.

506 OK, I get that Megyn Kelly pissed many off with her anti-trump stuff, but "Me-Again" is just as dumb as the stupid name 'Drumpf' the progs came up with.

Whenever anybody uses made-up names like "Rethuglican," it's not the insulting part that gets me, it's the stupidity, it's coming up with something stupid you might hear on a playground of five-year olds and then thinking a generic thing like that is clever enough to repeat. It causes me to just tune out everything else, because there can't be much that's noteworthy coming after.

It's part of the Democrat strategy of claiming that every Republican presidential candidate is the second coming of Adolf Hitler --- and then later claiming that past candidates were wonderful, moderate people who could be respectfully disagreed with, unlike the current candidate. Hillary used this shtick at one point of the debate, saying that Trump was unlike previous Republican candidates, as though she treated them any differently from Trump when they were running.

Its clear that no-one really questions the Haggard Queen to her face. She probably has had an endless parade of sycophants kowtow to her every day, all day, for years.

Does she really remember about the tape where she was caught laughing about getting a child rapist off? Or how the internet never forgot that she was fired from the Watergate investigation?

Some, she must remember -- the big hits from her husband's administration. But does she even remember the comparatively smaller stuff, about her lying about coming under sniper fire?

I didn't watch the debate, but from following the comments, it feels like she was introduced to many inconvenient facts that she may have forgotten.

Have to love the fly shots too. Hillary: may you fall into a deep and dreamless slumber.

"CLINTON: "Everything he said is absolutely false. It would be impossible to be fact checking Donald all the time. I would never get to talk and make lives better for people. Once again, go to Hillary clinton.com. You can fact check trump in realtime. Last time at the first debate we had millions of people fact checking and we will have millions more fact checking. It's just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country."

TRUMP: "Because you would be in jail."

COOPER: "We want to remind the audience to please not talk out loud. Do not applaud. You are wasting time."

648 The fly on Hillary's face is evidence that she's not a cyborg. Unless of course, she's one of those Terminator-type cyborgs coated with living human tissue to successfully pass backwards through time to destroy the human race.

What is it with modern leftists and not brushing a fly off the face? I don't recall a Republican, even a sold-out eRINO, just letting the little disease wagon crawl around on their phiz unchallenged. Obama did the same thing -- famously. He seemed proud at just putting up with his little buddy the fly crawling on his face on-camera. Maybe Hillary, Barack et al were too drugged-out to notice a fly on the face.

Remember the MOVE black radical lunatic organization in Philly in the 70s-80s that mounted loudspeakers on their group house and yelled gibberish at the neighbors in a poor black part of town 24 h-ours a day and had mounds of garbage in their yard? They not only tolerated flies. roaches and silverfish, they actually cultivated and protected them. We need Hieronymus Bosch reborn would be needed to paint a proper portrait of these maggots.

649 ISIS are all civilians, they are supported by civilians, their logistical base: lodging, police, judges, tax collectors, teachers, refuel personnel, financial people, webmasters, school administrators...etc. etc, etc. all civilian.

You cannot fight them without fighting civilians. You cannot engage in air, artillery, armor or infantry operations
without hitting civilians.

There are very, very few people left in the contested areas of Syria who are not on one side or the other. The "refugees" we are dealing with are from Turkey and have been safely out of the war for about 2 years.

Turkey, who was a principal antagonist of the regime and cheerleader for the US arming the Salafist rebels as in Libya, wants to dump them onto Europe and the US.

653 I think it became "Trump" before WWI. That's the way it was with most German names - some version of the surname more easily dealt with by English-speaking people was established after they arrived. Trump's grandfather came a little before 1900, IIRC, made a small fortune, returned to Germany, and then was kicked out for having spent the years he was supposed to have done compulsory military service in America. So he got married and came back to America.

687 #429, MacArthur detached his chief of staff, Almond, to command X Corps while still leaving him on the books as the SCAP CoS. Now Almond did not exactly have a fantastic track record. He was out of VMI, caught a bit of WWI in the 4th Division, then commanded the 92nd Infantry Division in Italy (which was a shitty outfit), and was dumped on MacArthur. He went from G-1 to CoS there.

But by using him to command X Corps and not having the corps under Eighth Army, MacArthur could then supervise the Inchon then Hamhung/Wonsan landings directly. MacA knew as much about amphibious operations as any other Army officer, and certainly more than any one available in the Pacific Theater at the time. Walker was a tanker, Almond an Italian Theater infantryman. The Truman Administration certainly wasn't going to allow any senior Marine Corps officers into the theater to run things. Nor would MacArthur probably have solicited their counsel anyway.

Now Almond did not handle the drive to the Yalu with an abundance of caution, but he also had to be reliant on what MacArthur's G-2 fed him. And Willoughby was by every account always the weak sister of that staff. But he was of the Bataan Gang, and that was always one of MacA's weaknesses- loyalty to the wrong subordinates. He did do about as good a job getting the corps out as could be managed- having two good divisional commanders will do that for you. O.P. Smith of the 1st Marine Division in particular.

But really, if Almond was all that bad, Ridgeway would have canned him when he replaced MacArthur, but instead he left him in command of the corps through the end of the '51 counteroffensive.

689 As one who figured 4 years of President Hillary was baked into stone when her prayer of running against Donald was fulfilled, I'll admit I was surprised how well
Trump did tonight. Trump was good pointing out the moderators' pro-Hillary bias. He mostly
avoided chasing after bait Hillary tossed at him; one exception was
wasting time justifying hiding his tax returns, but otherwise good.

Objectively I'd say the debate was almost a draw, with Trump doing a
little better. But grading on the Donald curve, Donald knocked it out
of the park. The curve being that this time Donald didn't let Hillary
make him her bitch, like she did last debate.

If Trump can keep this much self-discipline between now and election day against a pathetic candidate like Hillary, we'll inaugurate President Trump in January. But sadly Donald hasn't shown the stamina to maintain adult self-discipline for more than a few days, before his dominant 5-year-old personality takes over to throw whatever tantrum Hillary baits him to.

At that club, there were various state senators, representatives, judges, doctors, lawyers, and members of the Detroit mafia. I can attest, as a young high school idealist, that my visions of representative government as taught in my government classes were shattered in those years. None of them were without dirt on their hands with the exception of maybe a few of the judges. Or maybe they just weren't as open about it.

716 Trumps response on the tax issue was somewhat disappointing. I liked that he went after Hillary's donors. That was strong.

It would be nice, however, if someone would actually tackle the "make sure the rich pay their fair share" and "avoid paying taxes" bullshit head on.

Q: How would you ensure that the rich their fair share.

A: I am glad you asked. I will answer in detail, since there is a lot of confusion and concern about this issue and the media and democrats seem to go out of their way to promote that confusion.

Point 1: Were talking about Federal Income tax here. Federal income tax is supposed to pay for roads, bridges, the military and other services that the Constitution specifies and benefit everyone. At present, we have a progressive system: lower incomes pay a lower rate, high income a progressively higher rate. Then you have a litany of deductions and exemptions. The result is that 45% of people in the country pay zero income tax while 55% pay 100% of what the government takes. Some would argue that's fair since people who earn more use roads, bridges and other things in far greater proportion than those who earn less. Others disagree and feel that everyone should pay something for things they use. That is a fair debate.

Out of the 55% of income earners who actually pay some tax, around 80% of all tax revenue is paid by the top 10% of earners. In short, the rich are paying almost all the taxes in the country as it stands right now. Again, some may say that's fair, others disagree. Some would argue that people should pay more in tax. What cannot be said is that the rich are not paying their "fair share" when less than 10% pays more than 80%.

Our law requires income tax. What happens when you have no income? Should you be taxed on income you did not receive? Of course not.

What if you invest money that you have already paid taxes on and that money is lost in a failed venture? Should you be taxed again on that money that was already taxed and lost? Of course not. In fact, the law states that you can deduct those losses from future income. That's true for everyone, no matter what your income level.

There are no special privileges here that benefit the rich and not the poor. The poor already pay in zero and receive money back in excess of what they pay in.

So, we're left with a simple choice: Is is better for the government to seize money that business might otherwise spend on employees, new businesses, growth and other inventments or should they give it to the goverment to invest?

Well, if-let's say Apple- borrowed and invested a trillion dollars, how may more jobs, factories, and new technologies do you think would result?

On the other hand, our government borrowed and spent over a trillion dollars in a special stimulus, over and above the trillions is takes in and spends each year and the excess that it borrows. What did you get for that? Who is responsible for paying that borrowed money back? Will you personally ever see even so much as a new iPhone from that money vs. if Apple did the same thing?

What did the government do with it? It bough Solyndra, which immediately went bankrupt. It bought junk cars which now clutter scrap yards. You tell me, who invests money better?

725 Another point about MacArthur is that from 1937 to 1941, he was retired from the US Army and was in the Philippines as an employee of their government not ours. From '35 to '37, he was still a serving major general, having declined retirement following his tour as Chief of Staff, and having given up the four stars of that position.

The Medal of Honor was a FDR
publicity stunt. FDR just wanted to get some good news on the newsreels with the fall of the Philippines. And he already had two DSCs, seven Silver Stars, and two
Purple Hearts from WWI. How many pics can you find of MacA in uniform
actually wearing any of it? This was a guy with a stack of commendations for courage under fire in
WWI in the 42nd Division, then was still patrolling on foot occasionally
in the Philippines in his sixties.

You can fault him for a lot of things- poor management of his staff, his ego, being a shitty father, but a lack of personal courage was not one.

If you flee a war zone, you are a "refugee" once you arrive in the first "safe" country of refuge, which in the case of the "Syrians", is Turkey. Moving onward from there, you are no longer a refugee, but a migrant.

The humane and proper treatment of these people would be to provide a share of the funds needed to support them in Turkey until the war ends in Syria, and they can return home to rebuild.

757 Trump lost the election in this debate. You can't publicly beat down a grandma like that and become president.

758 I think it was a big win, what I find more contestable is if it will be big enough.

760 It was like a CEO vs. a junior league nasty defense lawyer.

761 I'm so happy that someone finally went on television and called Hillary Clinton the Devil and said she should be in prison right to her face. GOAT.

762 I think Trump won, too, because he had the memorable lines and kept her on defense. Of course, he's being graded on a steep curve- per usual, his answers were verbal diarrhea and nonsensical for the most part. It'd be nice if he could answer something without it seeming he was suffering from Tourette's. It was quite the contrast- the focus grouped typical pol answers from Clinton and the random word salad of Trump.

His answers themselves of course were disappointing. Aligning with Russia/Assad/Iran in Syria is a mistake, and claiming they're killing ISIS instead of the rebels against Assad is just fantasy. He did mention it, but he should've focused ALL his energy on her time at state and how under her and Obama's watch ISIS grew into a menace, how relations with Russia are now at Cold War levels, etc. I thought his answer on the 'rich paying their fair share' question was actually pretty good, and he did a decent job of turning that against Hillary too, but accepting the premise that they don't at the moment is problematic. He also should've nailed her on the energy issue, and talked about the thousands of coal jobs lost and how she wants them ALL gone- he missed a lot of opportunities like that.

But I also don't think it matters. He's toast, especially when the next oppo dump hits.
