Politico Founder Jim Van Der Hei: I've Always Defended the Media Against Bias Charges, But This Year, They've Proven Themselves to Be Hyperpartisan Embarrassments

Even the media is now embarrassed by the media.

In a way they never did before like I've said this before. I've always been a defender of the media. I think these accusations of bias are usually overdone. I think that that’s all out the door, all out the window in this campaign. I think reporters have become so biased, so partisan, particularly on Twitter.

He added:

"Go look at the Twitter feeds of the reporters from your major newspapers -- The New York Times, The Washington Post, others - -and tell me if those are things that they would say on TV or that would have ever been acceptable in previous campaigns....Just let the facts be out there and let people make a judgment."

Twitter is an interesting phenomenon (if a dreadful one). It puts the spotlight on a person's narcissism, and each person's desire to show off and preen and signal for his Tribe acts as a kind of ego-fueled truth serum to confess things he ought really not confess.

It's not just that they "know" things that aren't true. It's not just that they don't know about so much pertinent stuff that IS true.

One thing that was occasionally stunning and almost encouraging was to see smart, fair-minded journalists in the field having their work stomped/spiked/changed by idiots back in New York, Paris, or London.

One came to me screaming oaths at his editors, he even printed out his raw filing to compare with what was on the wires under his byline. It completely changed (distorted, lied about) the facts he had reported.

Oddly, it was non-Americans who were generally the best. (oh - not Europeans, other foreigners)

I was going to dispute this for me but then again, I do use twitter very much to signal my allegiance to the Tribe by which I mean the Cleveland Indians. So, yes, yes I do signal my Tribe.

I think there's a difference in kind between someone who should be using twitter for professional advancements and, well, me, for whom twitter is a way to make snarky comments back and forth with friends and to look at corgi videos. Do I virtue signal some? Of course I do. But I have no illusions at all that I am advancing the Narrative or whatever. Nope. All I'm doing is preening about. That's it.

I do not comprehend this bit where professionals lose their ever loving minds and just blurt stuff out. The hell. If you have that little self control, don't go on twitter. Set it up to auto tweet out links to your articles so you get the precious page views but then stay away. It's easy if you try.

Cronkite got his Globalist Government award in 1999, and Hillary chimed in as FLOTUS praising that lofty goal (new world order, which Soros wants to destroy the west to establish). Cronkite even spoke then of how he couldn't come out (of the commie closet) back in his day, people were not ready.

The commie machine was alive and well for decades, Obama and Hillary had such mentors early on, and Chicago seems to be the HQ (even on the Chicago School of economics, in a certain globalist sense). It's hardly even a conspiracy theory anymore.

Twitter exposes those that can't hide anymore, if only because the arrogance gets the better of them. But the MFM still sets the narrative for many/most.

And I'm not just talking about an actual partisan topic like a binary presidential election.

I'm talking about how people even form their "understanding" of a subject - even one affecting their lives, concretely.

One can see it here, regularly. Discussions of key topics from a "right" perspective that are almost as silly as the idiocy one sees from an NPR type - because the entire framework is STILL the same one crippling the NPR types.

Whatever. Inertia and good luck are the only things making a decent future possible now. If some of the Beltway (mindset, not just geography) start saying things like this from embarrassment, it can't hurt.

It gives "permission" to the highly educated, successful, remarkably ignorant and policy-stupid suburban voters to acknowledge those little stirrings of doubt caused by the increasingly histrionic distortion that has replaced any semblance of journalism.

But also a reflection that politics has become more intrusive - everything is political now because the government has grown so large. The bias plays a much larger role in part due to the outsized role of government. Bias could be overlooked 50 years ago because while it was prevalent, it didn't matter as much because the government was smaller.

Yeah, but there was still some amount of basic "who, what, where, when" to reporting. Sometime in the 1960's, J-schools students stopped wanting to be an accurate record of their life and times, and changed their mission statement to "change the world."

NBC is owned by GE - Jeffrey Immelt is in Obama's back pocket. Carlos Sim owns the NY Times. How do you think he feels about globalization and illegal immigration?

The reporters are scum - but I think even if they woke up tomorrow and decided they would be perfectly even-handed and report on Hillary's crime - they wouldn't be allowed to.

I agree. To pretend - or even to believe - that it's impossible to be unbiased to issues that you spend your time researching/discussing issues is just lying to yourself. Everyone who has spent time thinking about a topic has an opinion on it. The only truly unbiased people are the ones who haven't thought about something.

If we (well, the media, and society at large) got away from the idea that "unbiased" was something that should even be a goal in the media and accepted that yes, we're biased, and we're going to view things through that lens, then we'll be much better off.

Happy to call Fox News, the Wall Street Journal the New York Post and Drudge "Republican" in exchange for CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, PBS, etc., all correctly calling themselves "Democrat."

Let the people choose what news (or, infotainment) they want to consume.

Its a consumer fairness issue. Perhaps some overreaching GOP Attorney General can sue some media companies under the consumer protection laws to try to get a news station to reveal its editorial bias as a matter of unfair trade practices.

Before you condemn that approach, consider what it would mean to turn lawfare against the democrats, for once.

Absolutely wrong (but it's conventional wisdom) that one cannot be unbiased, or fair. It's easy. If you're smart and informed enough. Easy. Yet this shibboleth is universally accepted. It happens all the time (not in the media much, any more, but even there - and when you see it, it's immediately obvious). But whatever.

And ..... not that important, a lost cause, everybody lazily accepts the idea that fair/accurate reporting is impossible.

But absolutely RIGHT about why it matters so much - the intrusion of govt. into everything. And not just the basic intrusion - the fact that in doing so, govt. is unmoored from law, tradition, common sense, the constitution, science, anything rational that has been the basis for progress in our history.

Just arbitrary, and increasingly based on racism, authoritarian pathologies, tribalism, and crude self-seeking corruption.

Frankly, that doesn't seem to matter to so called journalists today. They all. Over for each other like good little quislings. Everybody knows it and they just don't seem to care. It's their ends to a means.

It's really why people hate them. Because they abuse their positions and collectively denigrate or shame anyone who doesn't agree with them.

170 The MFM has always been biased all the way back to the colonial days. The major difference now is that the liberal communists now on ALL of them, not just the Duranty Times and the networks. Back in colonial days every faction had their own newspaper sheet. FDR effectively ended that with the FCC. And Soros has ended it all the way down to small town newspapers (all the majors had already gone over except the WaEx which is RNCe). . .

and it is well documented in a book by Bernard Goldberg an ex CBS reporter.

I read the comments this morning, regarding his tap-dancing on the abortion issue.

Yes, there are lots of "Catholics" who don't give a damn about killing babies, but there are also lots who are damn close to being done with the Democrat Party because they keep getting more frothingly ghoulish about killing more and more babies.

Sugar Kaine, to anyone who has been listening, drove the truck further over the cliff last night. He is so far beyond Cuomo's dancing on this topic, even far beyond Pelosi's and Kerry's from 2004.

Eventually, when enough purported Catholics finally get to enough, and leave that rotten Party, once and for all (JFK has been dead for 53 years, idiots), the Democrat Party will be in shambles.

Remember that Monmouth poll a couple weeks ago? They had one "issue" question. It was on Trump's supposed "birtherism". This is telling because the poll was taken the exact same time the media started making a fuss about it.

A truly independent organization would have not had the information to even think of asking the question. Trump hasn't been running on it and has never brought it up. You as a pollster have a limited number of questions to ask, birtherism never ranks in any list of voter issues, yet somehow this ONE AND ONLY issue question made the cut. And exactly at the same time the MSM started to hit the issue out of nowhere.

382 Obnoxious, wrong. The Abu Ghraib "scandal" was mostly the insanely distorted "coverage" of a very small incident - it received more above-the-fold NYT stories than the Pearl Harbor attack did in the months following.

ThunderB would scold me, pointing out that it was critical to always come down hard on any stupid mistreatment of detainees - and she'd be mostly right. But that goes to the court martial and the very harsh sentencing. The media hysteria was an entirely separate matter.

And the photos were not posted on the 'net by the perps. The lawyer for the lead defendant leaked them, hoping to help his client (can't recall his reasoning, looks bizarre on the face of it, may have been to poison the jury pool/make the case impossible to prosecute).

And the military discovered the misconduct. And twice - twice - the US govt. teased the story to the press, which showed little interest. Yes - the US actually pushed the story to press (probably in a misguided effort to impress the Iraqis about our rectitude and fairness - something any thinking Iraqi instantly accepted anyway, as evidenced by the many times the "insurgents" demanded US participation or guarantees to deals they made with the new Iraqi govt.).

The press yawned and had no interest. Until the photos.

A pretty outstanding, educational chapter that illustrates a lot of what I've said in comments above.

The still-dumbfounding passivity and incompetence of the Bush admin. in nuking the distortion and hysteria over this - and so much else - is a separate topic.

400 More and more so too. We were invited to the baptism of the son of two friends who we have drifted away from over the years. Big gala event, akin to a wedding reception afterwards. Open bar, the whole nine.

Neither one of them attends mass regularly. Its a social/cultural event.

Ann Barnhart calls people like that (and a great number of clergy, too) ones who don't really believe in what the Church teaches and are amazed (and slightly embarrassed) when they come across someone who does.

404 I think some of you folks who are unhappy in the Roman Catholic Church should consider investigating the Eastern Orthodox Church. The Western church and the Eastern Church started out as one, but then in the Great Schism separated. Eastern Orthodoxy doesn't have a Pope. They have Patriarchs but no single authority. They're very traditional as far as beliefs about marriage-although priests can marry, not Archbishops. I've been attending an Orthodox Church for a while when i can. i would say that the priest believes in outreach for the church-helping the poor, etc, which is a good thing, but I have never heard him give a sermon that sounds like anywhere near the American left .

A lot of it, yes. Many leftists saw it as a way to infiltrate as well as avoid the draft. I'd say that explains a lot about many of the issues surrounding social justice as well as molestation.

The papal nuncio, the guy who promoted bishops in the US was a long time big queer for years. It caused the USCCB to be a festering homosexual extravaganza and the seminaries followed. It was always a gay thing. I'm convinced that this same lobby is who ran out Benedict.
Posted by: deplorable dagny at October 05, 2016 01:49 PM (09Ay7)"

The issue with filling the seminaries with gay men, is more recent than most of the abuse that went on. If you go back through the files, look at movies like Spotlight and the original reporting, look at perps like Geoghan and Shanley, those guys were all ordained in the early 60's when there were still a ton of men entering the priesthood. Go to 70's, 80's and 90's and the massive drop off in vocations, for the seminary issues. There are certainly cases of abuse later, but the bulk of it was stuff from back in the 60's and 70's.

I was working on a engineering project in Queens and a parish, where they closed the school and were leasing it to the BoE. Met the Pastor, shook his hand, guy gave me the heebie jeebies. I talked to my colleague, and said "this guy is off" a few years later followed up on the project after I changed jobs, and found out he was removed amid allegations from the same time period, a bunch of classmates from the HS he was assigned to at the time got together and realized they had all been abused by the same guy. Dude kept a log of his conquests....

Posted by: deplorable dagny at October 05, 2016 01:39 PM (09Ay7)

Yeah, I've seen that argument from Catholics all my life.

You have to understand, it looks like utter, spineless BS to us Protestants.

There was a time when the Catholic church actually ex-communicated people who publicly, egregiously contradicted and flouted its teachings and refused correction. Now? It's all this "you ex-communicated yourself" stuff. What's a guy gotta do to actually get kicked out?

There's a reason your pews are filled with "Catholics" who think the church should bend to accommodate them, that there's nothing incompatible about being a hardcore progressive lefty and being Christian, and that the contents of scripture are at best suggestions. It's because the church has decided for decades that if these people are going to wallow in heterodoxy, hey, that's on them to work out; don't bother with correcting or disciplining that stuff.

Speaking as one of the Orthodox Horde, I second the recommendation. If you prefer your services in English, try an OCA church rather than, say a Russian or Greek parish.

And a minor quibble, FS, we allow married men to be ordained, but we don't allow ordained men to marry.

And I have really never found anythihng in the bible that prohibits the clergy from marrying. Personally I think that is something that was established to fight the corruption that came up with the popes a long while back in the "turbulent years" of the church.

I also suspect that it had a lot to do with the coming out of Martin Luther and the protestant church.

Posted by: Votermom watching a Spanish show at October 05, 2016 12:52 PM (Om16U)

Ryan, IMO, has a sensibility and respect for the different branches of government and their respective offices. He just would not go after Biden and point out Biden's lunatic laughing, joking, etc. because he was the sitting vice president and a member of the Senate via his oversight and tie breaking on Senate votes.
A perfect example of Republican's being enamored of government to the point that they refuse to do anything which might result in someone 'talking bad" about them or the office they hold. Which is why threats of blaming them for everything from a government shut down that the Democrats orchestrate to demanding Republicans give even more money in a non related bill to a pet cause of the Democrats, that the Democrats will take credit for(money for Flint water) work.

Ryan was a perfect example of being so , umm , mannered.

433 Nice ONT and interesting discussions. I have trouble seeing a lot of the media output as bias rather than propaganda, especially when some of the talking points are received daily or on a routine basis from the WH or when the same points are made verbatim by many outlets.

Bias I see as agreeable toward, propaganda as selling pretty much a lie, or warped picture with a pinch of reality, not necessarily truth, to get it rolling.

The media has moved from bias towards propaganda. 2 cents
