Overnight Open Thread (30 Sep 2016)

VDH nails it. The next President unbound.

Congress has proven woefully inept at asserting its constitutional right to check and balance Obama's executive overreach.

The courts have often abdicated their own oversight.

But the press is the most blameworthy. White House press conferences now resemble those in the Kremlin, with journalists tossing Putin softball questions about his latest fishing or hunting trip. One reason Americans are scared about the next president is that they should be. In 2017, a President Trump or a President Clinton will be able to do almost anything he or she wishes without much oversight - thanks to the precedent of Obama's overreach, abetted by a lapdog press that forgot that the ends never justify the means.

Coexist

Yeah, those that believe that coexist bumper sticker crap are delusional. Female chess players forced to wear hijab as governing body awards world championships to Iran.

Pronouns

Heh. Michigan student successfully changes preferred pronoun to 'His Majesty' on class roster. Pandora's Box has been opened on this. Are you in trouble if you don't call him His Majesty?
h/t BC aka "You're Right", his personally selected preferred pronoun.

Aiming Fails

Beards

So beards are now the secret to getting lucky? Funny that one of the dudes in the article self identified as a feminist and yet called women 'chicks' and is growing a beard to pick up said chicks.

Green Devices

Surprised the WaPo actually posted this. Cobalt mining for lithium ion batteries has a high human cost.

Doom

Nice. Mick Gordon finally released the official soundtrack to the Doom video game that came out this year.

F-35 vs A-10

Pentagon advances F-35 vs A-10 CAS testing. It'll be interesting to see what the test parameters will be.

Science

Yikes. This isn't even a parody. Feminist PhD candidate: Science is sexist because it isn't subjective.

So, in other words, using logic and the scientific method are inherently "male" ways of knowing that women and minorities cannot employ. Rather than rejecting this insulting view of women and minorities' intellectual and rational capacities, Parson uses it as a pretext to advocate that science classes abandon the scientific method itself (which rests on the assumption that truth is unchanging and knowable) and all other "male" forms of oppression, such as "weed-out courses, courses that grade on a curve, a competitive environment, reliance on lecture as a teaching method, an individualistic culture, and comprehensive exams."

Environmentalists don't care about human life, especially the lives of brown people. As evidenced by this story, their position on DDT in Africa and pretty much every single issue they take a position on.

If you could get a Greenie alone and maybe get a few craft beers or fruity drinks in him or her, you'd probably get them to admit that they actually like the deaths because the more people die, the less CO2 is hurting mother Gaia. Just not their *own* death because they share Green memes on Facebook so they are too important to allow to die.

81 Parson uses it as a pretext to advocate that science classes abandon the scientific method itself (which rests on the assumption that truth is unchanging and knowable)

++++

was noodling over how math etc is used in other societies and why we're the way we are vs etc i think a lot boils down to religion

my impression, could be wrong but a nice starting point

Indians are historically good at math, especially abstracted kinds. some of that comes from their music, but much also derives from their concepts of time as found in their Hindu scripture. they deal with spans anywhere between billions of years to split seconds as discrete, knowable units. they believe the world is an endless cyclical birth and rebirth, with knowable events. there's curiosity but scripted.

Arabs refined some of the mathematical knowledge preserved by greeks and Christians. brilliant work, in the service of building mosques and straining meaning from their Koran, in a fashion similar to Jewish numerology. they believe the universe is otherwise contingent upon the will of Allah, so there are no eternal laws to discover - only laws that pertain now, at Allah's sufferance.

Christians, for a time, believed the universe to be the visible mind of God, the work of the great watchmaker, in some description. they expended great energy in striving to know the entirety, big and small. they believed it to be both unchangeable and knowable. in result came the scientific method.

the modern west is abandoning Christianity and science, so far expending its mental energy on issues of identity. one could say it's the absurdly splintered end point of radical Protestantism in that everyone is a church of one. we say it cannot last, but it's only just begun

then you have ancients like Babylon which based everything on astrology and developed it's science that way, etc.

Somehow shaving my neck lets me get away with a few days of not shaving because I guess homeless guys don't shave their necks.

The reason why Christianity is fading is both a lack of faith by the rising generation, and a pseudo-intellectual skepticism and hate of the idea of objective moral reality and a Supreme Being.

General Relativity as proposed by Einstein does not imply relativism. It was about understanding that how the Universe would appear depending on frames of reference.
I had one deluded college English prof 40 some years ago that thought that the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle meant we could never know anything for sure. Deriving moral relativism from Heisenberg's proposal that we could not know momentum and location of subatomic particle simultaneously.

Any international organization that has a one country/one vote design is meant to be run by graft. China/Russia/Islamic countries are going to bribe the smaller countries. Suddenly ICANN has policies dictating that you can't get domain names for sites that insult Islam. It won't be that blatant because they'll couch it in "respecting religion" terminology. But the vice will slowly tighten.

196 Relativity actually could be called the The Theory of Universal Invariance. What relativity theory is about, what it makes you focus on, are the *invariants*, the things that do not change, that are invariant, between reference frames.

Consider F = ma, which every schoolboy should now. That form is actually not invariant, but through the machinery of Relativity, it is possible to write something and you can still write as F = ma, but it's not quite the same thing.

a becomes a covariant derivative measuring the deviation from the geodesic as measured by a local ruler and clock. 'm' becomes the notion of rest mass, or invariant mass, and F is likewise a covariant notion.

Anyway, the Laws of Physics must be written in an invariant form (this is more oft called covariant form, but invariant is a better way to say it, especially for a general audience), which means they hold in all reference frames.

It turns out things we thought, through Newtonian intuition were invariant (like time and space) are not. They are nothing but coordinate choices.

There are notions of time, proper time along a world line, that are invariant, but this is not the notion of coordinate time that we all naturally have.

All innocent like (picture AtC), at the end of the meeting, I brought up how the VA is treating our son and other vets, and then someone else brought up how PC the military is, and on and on. And then, just for shits and giggles, I described how our son was injured in a mortar attack in A-Stan.

219 It turns out things we thought, through Newtonian intuition were invariant (like time and space) are not. They are nothing but coordinate choices.

There are notions of time, proper time along a world line, that are invariant, but this is not the notion of coordinate time that we all naturally have.

Wow, publius.

224 Trump's tweets about this Miss Universe woman have damaged him badly. It's not even about her...it's the fact he made this an issue. That he couldn't stop himself. And throwing out the "sex tape" issue? That hasn't mattered since the Kardashians.

And that he couldn't see he was being baited? Or he did & went after her anyway? Smh. People would have been forgiving a few months ago. Not now. It's a few weeks from election, and instead of actual issues, or staying quiet, he pulls this self-defeating behavior?

It's almost like he doesn't want to win. Each time his numbers have climbed, he has pulled something stupid. At best he is conflicted about it, IMO.

I mean, how hard is it to stay off Twitter for a few weeks?

I don't think he can fix this. He would have to be on his best behavior the next few weeks, and triumph at the debates, and I don't think he can rise above his worst impulses.

Sorry for rant...just appalled he undid all the work others did on his behalf. Let down people who put their reputations on the line. Smh

Our pastor has a nephew who was injured in Iraq. So yeah, peacenik is the opposite of him.

He's also a hunter. We have lots of them in our church. Prob the closest to politics he's gotten is making a statement one time about all the hunters in church and how he felt comfortable saying that we as a church were very comfortable with the 2A and all it entails.

So, we'll stick it out, and be around long after this pastor has moved on.

367 OK, story time.

Way back when we had the world's dumbest nanny. Not just dumb, but sheltered, she'd never been anywhere. Her idea of directions was "you go past the Burger King and there's a tree, then another tree, then you turn left".

So I was newly separated and living in a shack by the harbor and she brought me home from a minor surgery. I had gin at home and I really wanted gin and tonic for my convalescence. So I asked her to get me some tonic.

Now, tonic used to be the Boston area word for soda, or pop, or Coke. The generic it covers everything term. I think it's faded from use.

But we were near Boston and I know the girl is dumb so I say "not just tonic, it will have the words 'tonic water' on the label. Also 'quinine'. Also, no matter what the brand, the label will be yellow. So make sure you get the one with the yellow label that says 'quinine' on it".

Yeah. She brought me seltzer in a blue label and I limped half a mile to the tonic store in the rain.

377 It's actually a myth that testosterone level correlates with body hair. Balding men like to tell themselves, hey, that means I have higher testosterone. Tell yourself that if it helps.

Hormones are damned complicated things, which is why messing with them is not to be done lightly. What has to do with hair is DHT, a metabolite of testosterone. This is something your body converts testosterone into. It converts testosterone into all sorts of things, including *estrogen*. There are all sorts of pathways resulting in all sorts of end products.

Now, DHT is responsible for stimulating hair growth, but also responsible for causing male pattern baldness.

This demonstrates just how damned complex this all is.

As you age, the balance of testosterone metabolism changes.

Anyway, men who are bald at age 25 can have much lower testosterone that those who have a full head of hair until death.

My parents were blue collar socially conservative Dems back when such a thing was still possible.

My kid brother continues to vote Dem because he was raised to do so. It's funny because his own personal life is conservative. He is quite thrifty, a churchgoer, hard worker, etc. But I don't think he thinks deeply about politics at all.

My older brother is an independent - usually votes D, but voted for Walker twice.

My sister used to be a Dem but has become more conservative with age (I think that's largely due to the fact her second husband is a Republican. Hubby No. 1 was a liberal Dem.) However, she can't stand Trump and told me she's only voting bottom of the ticket this year. I've given up trying to persuade her.

We're a pretty close-knit family. We don't talk politics much.

I would disagree.

The media has this trick where they take some small annoyance with a candidate and keep pushing it and pushing it and pushing it and pushing it until the public starts associating the annoyance with the candidate. Trump escalates each such annoyance into a full-fledged shitshow that leaves the public with the impression that (a) anyone talking about this turd of a subject is tainted by its odor; and (b) there may be facts that say this is one thing, and facts that say it may be another -- but any member of the public that doesn't just back away is going to smell just as bad.

I do think that it rebounds onto Trump to associate with this kind of crap.....but it absolutely devastates MeAgain and the rest of the lapdog media (as seen below in Ace's movie review). To say that Trump should stay focused and Presidential cedes the playing field of sleaze entirely to the media.

And it puts the Dems on notice that the "this druglord's moll was jumped ahead of real immigrants to become a citizen in May and an employee of the Clinton campaign in June in order to tout 20-year-old unsubstantiated slurs" story might just get traction.

By getting aggressive and jumping in front of it, Trump stopped the Khan story from becoming an avalanche -- I suspect the Miss Venezuela stories will similarly be spiked.

449 Speaking of astrophysics, I did not know this until I just stumbled onto it. They've discovered some "dark matter galaxies". They were using a newer type of telescope, known as a "dragonfly" (roughly based on insect's compound eyes of many lenses) which can detect very dim objects that were never visible before.

And they found some very dim objects, including one, Dragonfly 44. It turned out to be some ordinary stars bound together in a galaxy like configuration, but only had 0.01% of the visible mass necessary to hold it together. 99.99% of the mass of this object is dark. Hence, a dark matter galaxy, one made of the shit we don't what it is.

It would be worth a few hundred bucks, and some discomfort, to never have to shave my neck again. And it wouldn't preclude growing a nice facial beard.

About 10 years ago our church went looking for an associate Pastor. It took 2 years and about 25 interviews to find one that was somewhat conservative, but we did, and he came from California.

We found out that most of the theological schools have gotten overrun by the 60's hippies and the SJW's.

Our church finally got around to changing denominations because the church national leadership and staff became full blown SJW, and it became all about Muslim outreach and new age mysticism.

I have a degree in Econ from the University of Casual Sun-Bathing in 1983, and I learned substantially more about it since I graduated than when I was doing coursework. The first thing your son should know is that there are three subsections of Econ he should know about -- and it's not microeconomics, macroeconomics, and something else. It's Classical, Keynesian, and Austrian.

Classical Economics is philosophical -- it's obvious that people want what's best for themselves, but this varies so much according to taste that the brush must be broad. That said, read http://bastiat.org/en/twisatwins.html and see if you don't end up smarter on the other side.

For an understanding of Keynesian and Austrian Economics, I can heartily recommend the subversive rap videos by EconStories -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0nERTFo-Sk and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTQnarzmTOc .

The hilarious thing about these videos is that they are dead nuts accurate, while seemingly loose and freewheeling. As you drill down into understanding each one, you both increase your understanding of Economics and appreciate the humorous touches that have been inserted.

I can also not recommend more highly the article https://mises.org/library/forgotten-depression-1920 -- it actually brings the concept behind the Chinese "Rectification of Names" into Economics.....sort of a "Rectification of Projects" or "Rectification of Debt".

And, BTW, if climate change were exclusively man-made, then there would not have been any before man was around to make it -- and yet, the world has been hot moist jungles and cold ice-age glaciers before man first turned the ignition key on his first SUV.

Sounds like you are spot on to me.

Posted by: Farmer at September 30, 2016 11:58 PM (o/90i)

- deplorable chl****
--------
I think now it is not the Dem/GOP...it's the swing votes & low info voters. They don't see the matrix they are in. What they see is Trump fullfilling the narrative set out about his temperament. They by nature, will not dig deeper. ( Khan story was different, IMO, in a number of ways. )

His temperament seems to be the thing that has finally gotten traction, the buzzword, and people will focus on that.

And honestly, I still remember his Twitter fight with the Saudi Prince about who had more money or some such pissing contest. Hopefully, the media doesn't resurrect that nugget. Objectively, it is a concerning issue.

I just feel a wind shift I haven't before. A pivot. Instinct says he jumped the shark this time with the undecideds. And women. And he won't recover enough to win.

But stranger things have happened...

Right now, I'm a little embittered about the Profession of Architecture. Not about architects, mind you, but the high-and-mighty profession. Our goddaughter had some talents in that direction (including a session at Fallingwater) and enrolled in a highly-rated school, the University of Oregon -- that has a special 5-year Architecture program.

So far as we could tell, she and her classmates were subjected to the equivalent of "Project Runway". "Design a library building using Hefty Bags" gets you immunity for this week's challenge; "flesh out a Tiny House for an ecologically-conscious SJW" leads to this week's winner....and the loser who has to go home. After a couple of years of this, she's now an English major.

Mind you, I have great respect for architecture as a calling -- the ability to synthesize environments to facilitate positive human interactions is playing multidimensional chess on a grand scale -- it is very nearly beyond training and must be an innate gift. (And, BTW, there is a lot of quantified data from the Disney guys.....they were working on making it a science).

But to take something so sublime, something so technical, something so meaningful.....and make it into a mean grrrllzzz club is such utter bullshit (as your Dean was trying to make it into a mean boyzzzz club).

The denomination holds the individual churches balls over the fire. The denomination actually held the title to the church property, so if you want to leave, you have to come to a financial arrangement to get the property back. Plus, they make the leaving messier than a divorce. 2/3rds of the congregation have to vote to leave, and the denomination controls all of the debate. 1/4 of the congregation voted to remain in the denomination, and most of them left the congregation after the vote.

A lot of the ones that left were older members that had grown up in the denomination and felt that the congregation should fight to change to denomination's going off the rails, but what they don't understand is that the people they chose to represent the congregation at the upper levels were the ones that were gung ho for the leftist BS.

What sort of temperament Hillary would show if they grilled her about how she smeared her husband's victims as bimbos and trash 20 years ago? God, I hate her.

I first started seeing those paw booties a few years ago. One winter morning, I asked one dog walker why they did that? I was told it was to protect the paws from all the de-icing salt on the hard surfaces. (That salt chews through car bodies, so why not doggies' paws?) What I first thought was simply stupid actually made sense.

I'm sure dogs get used to the booties in a 'hey, he grabbed the leash so I'm going outside for a walk' kind of way. The booties become a positive association to good things (for a dog).

620 Let's try a different tack...

Little Jenny was falling asleep in class when the teacher asked her "Jenny, who created the universe?"
Jenny didn't even stir, so Little Johnny, seated right behind her, poked her with a pin.
"God Almighty!" shouts Jenny.
"Very Good," says the teacher

A few minutes later, the teacher called on Jenny again - "Who is our Lord and Savior, Jenny?"
Again, Jenny was asleep, so Johnny came to the rescue with his pin.
"Jesus Christ!" shouts Jenny.
"Very Good, Jenny!"

A few minutes pass, and the teacher calls on Jenny yet again - "what did Eve say to Adam after having her twenty-third child?"
Of course, Johnny pokes her with the pin to wake her up.
Jenny jumps up and shouts "If you stick that thing in me one more time, I will break it in half and stick it up your ass!"

The teacher fainted.

Little Johnny said, 'Please do!'

The teacher cheered.

Of course, Johnny challenges her on day one - ""I'll bet you $50 that I can guess what color your underwear are."Confident, the teacher says "OK, Johnny. Meet me after class, and I'll take your bet."

Just before class ended, the teacher goes to the bathroom and removes her panties.
After class, she says "OK, Johnny, what color is your guess?"
"Blue."
"Wrong," says the teacher, then raises her skirt to show Johnny that she's not wearing any underwear.

"OK. Come out to the parking lot - my dad is waiting for me, and will pay you the money."
The teacher than explains to dad that Johnny lost his bet, and that she showed Johnny that she wasn't even wearing any panties.

""That little fucker!" Shouts dad. "He bet me $100 this morning that he'd see your pussy before the end of the day!"

648 RE: Chess players forced to wear hijab:

Don't get me wrong, but when I hear that someone was "forced" to do something my nose wrinkles a bit. You are only forced to do something if a gun is held to your head or that of a loved one. You can refuse; yes, there will be a price to pay for your refusal (in this case not attending a chess tournament) but if you are interested in protecting your freedom by exercising it and not merely in whining about having chosen to surrender your freedom in return for some transitory consideration, then show some fu*king GUTS and refuse.
These young ladies are doing the right thing by telling Iran to shove it.
(BTW: there are persons quoted in the article pleading with the players to "respect cultural differences"; when will we see the Muslims taking their turn at this game and respecting cultures different from THEIRS? I'd say about eight days after the apocalypse...)
