Thursday night ONT Comments up here [Weirddave]

OK nobody likes the ONT. Pity, it took a lot of work to put it together. So here's what we'll do. Go down there and read and view the content, then come back up here to comment. No gifs up here. Easy loading. No lag. Save your data plans. Simple, no?

Sorry, was trying for something different. Didn't realize it would bollocks up so many people's devices.

10 I couldn't even comment. I tried blocking the domain name for all those .gifs, but apparently it won't work with https or something. I stopped the browser from loading, and then the comment box wouldn't work.

Firefox was just in a damn loop trying to load, load, load.

11 Something I never hear mentioned is the way Hillary expects the "debt free college tuition" to work is through the "Expected Family Contribution". Which means you'll have a gun to your head to pay for the nonsense your children want to take in college. Similar to how divorced parents MUST pay for college (at least in my state), even if you believe your child would be better off working or getting grants, loans, etc. and regardless of what you think about the courses they choose.

28 Actually WD I thought this ONT could have been pretty good, it just won't load.

Pixy has tiny hosting limits. All of the files were too big to host on this site. I had to download all of the files in Mp4 format, convert them to gifs, and then find a image hosting site that allows hotlinks.

Oh well. Lesson learned.

98 Firefox is apparently caching, or trying to, the GIFs, and sometimes can manage to play a few of them.

Typical image size looks to be about 5-6MB for each (well one of them I extracted was that size). So, we've got about what, 20 or 30 or them, so we've got about 150MB or better of .GIF data to deal with each load. And the server has to spew that to everybody trying to load it.

No wonder it was such a mess.

At one point in time, there was some company marketing those as "time release capsules". They were supposedly a way to deliver the medication evenly over the entire timespan of the dosage period. So, slower actually. Instead of getting hit with the medication all at once, it is doled out a bit at a time.

Of course, chances are the whole thing was just a marketing gimmick to give their advertisers a way to make that product seem better than all the other ones, when in fact, they are all the same.

Um, probably because of the Marilyn Monroe rumor

ANd you can get a lethal dose very easily that way, but you will get drunk very quickly.

Radar story in Italy. Reading through the log books from previous rotations. Found out the synchros in the radar antenna one day broke loose which rendered useless the azimuth blanking that stopped the radar from cooking the Italians' building and them in it. Peak RF of 3MW and the building in question was less than 100 meters away. First clue the night shift had things had gone south was walking out the van and every time the antenna swept across the building, the fluorescent lights inside would flicker on.

Fortunately it was at night and the building was unoccupied.

Barry Pepper was great, though. Could have done with less mumbling from Bridges, hard to catch what he was saying. But all in all a good flick."

It was very good. Bear Man kills me every damn time. And, I condemn my ownself, but Matt Damon played the character better than Glen Cambell did.

Yeah, Damon was good. Campbell was plank-like in the original. Damon brought just the right amount of prat to the part. Not too much. Just enough. Barry Pepper was the standout for me. It was like he was doing Duvall... normally that would be a ripoff and lame, Pepper pulled it off. I think I like his take as much as Duvall's. Josh Brolin did a good Cheney, too. Unfortunately, the guy doing Moon was no Hopper, though.

Netflix. I like to watch detective, mysteries etc. The more seasons the better. It is not serious watching ... I just came across A Young Doctor's Notebook and other stories. Based on A Country Doctor's Notebook by Mikhail Bulgakov. Don't expect much comparison wise. But John Ham (MadMen) plays the doctor when older and Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) the younger. The story is as dialogue between the. They get very good acting reviews, especially Radcliffe who shines apparently. But said to be depressing and gritty, duh -- medicine in 1920s Russia.

To be fair, the blog host has never claimed to be a #NeverTrumper, but she never misses an opportunity to express her disdain for him, at great length. Some of her posts make Ace's movie reviews look like tweets.

But the commenters. I don't know how many have left like me, but most of the remaining ones are loud and proud #NeverTrumpers. Their virtue signaling is first rate. It's almost like LGF all over again.

416 So, in my "apropos of nothing" segment tonight, I learned about RFID.

Some time back, I'd purchased a little kit (www.parallax.com 32395-RT) to play with RFID -- and, today, I fired it up and got it working. I was thinking, perhaps, of making powered doggie-doors that only opened for specific chipped doggies -- and not, for instance, skunks.

Turns out that this particular kit was limited to only reading EM4100 chips -- and that pet chips follow four incompatible standards, none of which are EM4100. Further, a bunch of the store-bought products I had with RFID tags weren't readable, either (though some were). Figured out how to find a USB device, configure it, and read it under Linux. And learned a few things about store loss-prevention systems.

So, most of the cheaper RFID widgets are little passive guys that, when scanned with somewhere near a certain radio frequency (the wavelength spec is way overdone in the literature -- you can read both low frequency widgets with the same reader), chirps out its serial number.

And for the EM4100, that serial number is 10 bytes long -- in hex -- giving 1,099,511,627,776 possible combinations.....comfortably over a trillion. Again, going by cheap, this means there is no opportunity to write to the RFID tag, no way to shut it off. When your checkout clerk salaciously rubs your merchandise over the little disk at the register, s/he is not communicating with the device -- instead, s/he is uploading to the loss-control computer that this device is to be IGNORED in the future.

So, you get a box of 10,000 loss-control stickers, you tell the computer to watch for those at the gate, and as your clerks scan each one into the loss-control system, it gets subtracted from the 10,000. When your loss control system is only looking for 2,000 stickers, it tells you to run out and buy another batch. Since there are over a trillion possible stickers, it's somewhat unlikely that you'll buy a batch that includes the 2,000 numbers still being sought.

I feel quite pleased with myself for learning about this stuff, even though it didn't go the way I'd originally imagined it going. At least, now, I'll have a clue.

Very possibly -- she's been finagling around over there of late. She's figuring out that taking a class that ends at 10 pm one day, and taking another class that begins at 8 am the next, is generally a bad idea.....and it's even less of a good idea when you're over 50.

What did you find out? My guess would be the importance of documented and repeated workflow for replicable results. Maybe the difference between slicer and Kslice. Perhaps some issues regarding PLA and ABS?

They are damn good at this stuff, and it involves stuff they've learned, and remember institutionally from centuries of experience. WWII, and the secrecy and deception that were involved in winning the war strongly shaped how our spooks and military act and think.

It's a common trick to cover something up with something even bigger and juicier. If you're guilty of theft, sow seeds that you're guilty of murder and make everybody look at that, and not the lesser crime. And go down a rabbit hole.

If you're trying to cover something up, you act suspicious. And that makes people assume the worst. I learned that lesson way back in middle school. Some of us were chewing Skoal in the bathroom during gym period. Now, at some time, someone stole something valuable out of a locker in that bathroom.

We all got questioned. We acted suspicious, covering up our chewing. So, they thought we were the thieves. The real thief got away because of that false diversion.

Now, do that on purpose.

There a those who claim the whole UFO thing was dreamt up and pushed by the government itself (well, the kooks don't need all that much prodding, but they seed it), in order to cover up the real secret stuff going on.

You have contraband. Hide it in plain sight. Cops come. Act like you don't want them to look in this closet over here, drawing their attention to it and make them overlook the real location.

It's even worse when the next day's class begins at 6:00 AM, unless it's a PE course. Then it's a break-even result.

"What did you find out?"

1. It is possible to print a "functional" assembly in 1 pass. A working differential assembly (where the gears all mesh & rotate) can be printed as though it was 1 part, then removed & cleaned, then demonstrated.

2. In the more expensive printers, there are at least 2 kinds of material: the model material, and support material. This allows parts with overhanging features to be made, again as one part.

The list goes on. It's not an on-line discussion. However, there is still a window to sign-up.

459 THere's another "believe the lie" trick. Layering. A now deceased friend of mine was in the Air Force back in his younger days. In the '60s he was stationed in Germany, and was with some signals detail. They were tasked with some project. They were told they were doing something but to keep it secret and if anybody asks, tell them this cover story.

Well, he later learned, well after it was over, that what they were told they were really doing was itself another cover story, one layer deeper.

But note the men *believed* this second layer lie was true. THey believed a lie. If they talked out of school, say got caught in some honey trap and were bragging, they would be giving disinformation out, but disinformation they truly believed.

Now, there will be many layers of such lies, an onion of deception.

Imagine someone thinking he holds some valuable secret, and is tortured to the breaking point and spills it. But it's really disinfo. The enemy thinks they broke a man down, but what they get is a clever lie.

Again, these guys are absolute masters of deception. All human nature is used in the service of deception. I mean they are damn good.

It's your choice, but it's an opportunity to quickly learn many details that would otherwise be discovered slowly and at greater cost. If you really want to manufacture print "stuff", it turns out that:

3. Orienting the way the part is made has a considerable effect on print time (and quality)

4. Adding, e.g. 4, more copies of a part (in the X-axis) only increases the total job time by perhaps 20%.

I'll give you another freebee -- if you want to quickly ascertain the cost of a 3D-printed part, most folks would toss it on a scale. So long as materials cost is primary, it's not going to perform as well as the hype. Look at something like grinding PET beverage bottles (Recycling symbol 1) and 3D printing that. Don't look at the 3D printing side -- everybody's going there.....look at the materials capture side, 'cause there are opportunities there.

I don't have a "his" -- although I love cats and dogs and other furry creatures, I'm allergic, and in my Silicon Valley house, I lack the space to coexist with 'em. In today's explorations, I have learned much more about what readers work with what pets -- a lot from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microchip_implant_(animal) . Of course, I could build an EM4100 gate and put an EM4100 collar on any animal I wanted to pass, but I wasn't that impressed with performance.

513 So Obama people leak intel that Trump is told we have good confidence the email leaks came through Russia. Trump says we don't know, which is ... TRUE.

They want to attack Trump, that he can't be trusted with intel, so they freely leak intel themselves just to attack him. And the problem is, they have no problem with that ... destroying Trump with lies is their "just" mission.

514 Maris and Mantle.
Right around the time I started playing, at nine, and fell in love with the game. Had a coach that taught me to think situationally on defense. Probably the most important thing a coach ever taught me.
Dizzy and Pee Wee doing the game of the week.
The Cards taking the Yanks in the series.
I did think the majors were great for quite some time after that though.
KC getting the Royals.
The big red machine days with my all time catcher.
The list goes on

525 I got to see the '65' Yankees play the A's in KC.
Little league sponsor bought the tickets because our team made the tournament for the first time in years. Yours truly got the walk off (they didn't call em that back then) base hit that got us there. Think my eyes were closed at contact as the pitcher was a guy from my block who was a year older and a LOT bigger than me.
That was in Manhattan NaCly in case you see this.

That's because of the original ONT GIFpalooza. The second overnight thread (this one) was created because the original ONT was causing browsers and phones and just about the whole world to lock up thanks to all those gifs.

Semi-related. I came up through all the little league age groups until I got to what was Babe Ruth league in my area. That was 13-15 year olds.

When I was 13 I was a waif who hadn't hit puberty. There was a guy from my neighborhood who was 15, 6' tall, with a full beard and mustache.

It didn't seem fair.

535 This is a pretty big lie by Clinton, since she actually manufactured the condition where our troops allegedly would not have immunity. They wanted out so Clinton demanded greater immunity than before, greater than they have now. She demanded the parliament also approve it, which was always a no go.

"If only future debate moderators would ask her: What is the difference
in immunity offered by Iraq to U.S. troops in 2011 and today? And why
was that immunity not good enough then but good enough now?"

So she claimed we had to go, and blames Bush for setting that date (which, duh, new president can set his own friggin date), then blames Iraq government. A Clinton lie, they decided to boogey out, Hillary manufactured the excuse. Why did they leave 100s of Humvees for the JV ISIS?

I doubt there's much traffic from here (from the main page) at 6 in the morning. They have 5 subdomains all serving a handful of images ... on the front page where there are no images of theirs to display. That's screwed up.

Anyway, ezphoto whatever and all its children are now banned from my browser forever. Because they're drinkers who get all drunk and then try to serve images on pages they aren't on. And they try to follow people onto the main page to drop images on them and start fights ... BANNED!

________

I like the ONT!

Posted by: FireHorse at September 30, 2016 07:07 AM (lf/U1)

556 I didn't get the chance to comment on the Sept 13 ONT, but I saw something yesterday which reminded me of this.

The problem isn't so much that the Left ignores their eugenics-loving past as that they haven't actually given up on it. "Progressives" are every bit as enamored of the idea now as they were in the early 20th Century, they've just rebranded it as "reproductive rights" and exclusive self-interest cloaked in pseudo-compassion for the handicapped (i.e., Sanger's "weeds").

In fact, "progressives" in general seem to have a problem letting go of any idea no matter how reprehensible it is, but rather than question why normal people recoil from their ideas, they double down and rebrand them. They never stop to question that if their ideas were really so wonderful, they wouldn't have to keep altering language and outright lying.
