Pre-Overnight Open Thread

I have a series of appointments tomorrow. I'm putting some posts into draft, and I'll hopefully get to put a couple up on the run during the day, but I'll be out of the office most of the day.

If any coblogs have something, please fire away.

25 in the a.m. i'm seeing a sports doc to see if he can fix this problem I have with my heel. I stepped on glass six months ago. It still aches, like there's a permanent muscle knot. Like it mis-healed into knot or something.

Also, I'm going to hopefully get diagnosed with IT band syndrome, which I actually have, but if I have a doctor's note, I can get the thing worked on a by a clinical massage therapist and insurance will cover part of it.

It's kind of expensive.

but when you're over 28, as I barely am, and are physically active, you really need a lot of work keeping your muscles in some kind of decent shape.

There is a powerful magic in words. All systems of magic posit that somehow magic flows from the power of words (often words from old languages).

First, there's so many different aspects to address.

But as I have said (again today, thread below), I don't see the "burning times" as kinetic, physical, violent - for the most part.

I see them as structural, institutional, social - and already well under way.

Most advice would apply even in better times - financial modesty and diversification (meaning: if possible, source of income, or destination of savings, outside the big public retail markets ...... rental property, etc.), a prudent armory (17 firearms not required), and some short-term consumables depending on your locale/climate etc.

I agree that we are being targeted today by forces of evil, and the burning times are already underway. Our browser history is a window into our soul, and we have a panopticon culture online.

In addition, diversity trumps merit more and more, with predictable results. Reinforcing failure is not a stable strategy for a thriving country.

96 Also, I'm also going through an IT Band Syndrome thing. Just learned about it a couple days ago, when I couldn't complete my run.

Got new running shoes today, if the rain holds off I may try to get a run in before work. And I'm bow-legged as hell, so I am a natural, IIRC, under-pronator, so I need to work on my form. Been out of running for a couple years, my form has gotten sloppy.

Worst-case, I may dig out my smelly Vibram Five-Fingers. They're hell on your calves until you build them up, but they force you to land mid-step and flat-footed, or else you end up with a concussion from the heel-strikes vibrating your whole body all the way up to your head, lol.

97 Foot pain? A few years ago, I had plantar fasciitis, and walking was agony, especially first thing in the morning. Saw a doctor, who took X-rays, and said, "I know exactly what you have, and how much it hurts, because I have it, too." Recommended certain exercises, and braces, and said "cortisone shots are a last resort."

Did some research on the Internet, and found these guys: https://heelthatpain.com/

Eh, for $29 for their HTP heel seats, it's worth a shot. Within weeks, the pain was gone. I went through several sets of them, but no longer use them, because no need at all. My feet are fine. Just came back from a mile or more walk on a gravel road, no problem at all.

What happened to French?

I learned it, pretty much. I'm in the last year of learning it. I'm speaking it. It will take a while to get good at speaking it but this is the last hurdle.

i've got nuances to add and stuff and I want to know more slang but as far as standard french, i'm pretty decent now.

well, okay, let me take some of that back: You can never know a foreign language completely. When I read novels I have to look up a lot of of words. There are always more words to know.

but that's the sort of thing that just takes constant use. it's not really learning it at that point, it's just using it. Like kids pick up new vocab mostly from reading and using the language, not studying vocab itself.

135 Somebody in another post said that Ace was just being apocalyptic WRT a Hillary Presidency, that people were saying bad things about Obama too and, hey, were still here.

So let's review the state of conservatism in 2016 after almost 8 years of Obama

Social Conservative - massive loses

$500 million a year to Planned Parenthood, and organization that chops up near full term babies and sells the body parts

Gay Marriage enforced on every State, conscientious objectors jailed and fined

Fiscal Conservative - massive loses

No Federal budget for 8 years
Funds moved from account to account without Congressional Authorization.
$10 Trillion in new debt
Worse economic recovery

National Security Conservative - massive loses

Military demoralized by SJW edicts
New hardware massively over budget/don't work
Resurgent Islamic jihadism/whole countries destabilized
Foreign policy sold to highest bidder

Constitutional Conservative - massive loses

Massive expansion of executive orders
FBI and many other departments corrupted
"Guidance letters" (actually threats) used to control independent organizations
Complete disregard for enforcing immigration laws

Each of the above lists could be supplemented many times over. The past 7.5 years has been nothing but a complete and utter lose for conservatives, with the only exception I see is gun rights. I shutter to think what 4 or even 8 years of Hillary will do the country.

I think an auditory tool might help or at least ping my brain to remember what I already once knew? I have no ear. I think the solution would be immersion, but I don't want to do that and can't really. Also, if it's a pod cast, I can hike/walk/exercise with it on.

no strong interest.

Posted by: ace

I took 3 years of Latin in HS (that would be somewhere around 10 years ago, give or take), and I loved it because I love history...but seriously, learning 5 Declensions of nouns, 4 Conjugations of verbs, ordering the objects and subjects of a sentence and matching up their endings to the verbs/adjectives/adverbs in the sentence (and many endings of the different genders are the same), just to figure out what a sentence is talking about...is brutal. There's a reason it's a dead language, I have to say despite my love for it.

It's probably the reason I have such a block learning other languages since.

Posted by: Oedipus at September 29, 2016 09:39 PM (CXLVd)

184 Actually CBD that's true, but there are other situations that are fun.

Two old Russian ladies with limited English at the pharmacy counter. I stand there while they struggle a bit with the pharm tech, then step up and translate for them. All smiles from the ladies, funny, though not disapproving, look from the pharmacy guy.

And last weekend, as I'm about to get out of the pool after my workout (university pool), I notice the two young people in the next two lanes are speaking Russian. I explained to them that when I was studying it, one never encountered the language, anywhere, apart from Radio Moscow, or in the USSR - and now I hear it everywhere.

But the Brazilian Portuguese is definitely more useful for, uh, interacting with young hotties, who are fairly abundant in SoCal.

the thing is they're all essentially the same language. You basically just have to learn the most basic words (which tend to vary a little) and then what you might call the extended vocabulary is kind of very similar across all of them.

there's this thing I find interesting where one language has a word that's different from the word in the other languages (no obvious connection, I mean) and it poses the question: Where did that one word come from?

i think Spanish has some moorish/arabic words that are unknown in other romance languages, for example

195 ace, don't take shoe advice from us. Everyone's feet are different. Lots of people love Clark's for instance. I can't wear there. I suppinate - that is my feet roll outward when I walk, which strains my muscles. A podiatrist recommended New Balance walking shoes for me because of it - I hate their looks, they are old lady shoes - but they support my feet properly.

More people have issues with excessive pronation - their feet roll inward and that can lead to flat feet.

It's pretty easy to tell if you do either - just dig out an old pair of shoes and see how the heel is worn down. You might need ortho inserts to correct the problem but you also need the right shoes.

Researching brands yourself and perhaps seeing a podiatrist, or going to a specialty shoe for inserts is the thing to do.

Thanks for reminding me of this, after you posted that, I went downstairs and got my double-tennis-balls*, and rolled on my arch. Worked like a charm, feel like I could run again in the morning.

* double-tennis-balls: get two tennis balls, tape them together with 100mph tape (ie civilian duct tape)...lean against a wall/door, and squat up and down. Gets rid of those knots in your back that you can't rub out yourself, or have a Miss Venezuala Piggy on-hand to rub out for you. Plus, you can get a sharpie and draw nipples on them and it's funny.

The appointment was over a year away, which isn't unusual for specialists.

So Dad outwitted the Ontario medical system and lived to see his appointment. I drove him there. Went into a small room. The nurse had him change into shorts. That was the only time in my entire life I'd seen my dad in shorts.

The doctor came in. Ten minutes later, he prescribed him new orthotics (sp?) for his shoes. A YEAR's WAIT....

It's already burning....

He can't do it, and won't. He could actually, but it's the liability and all that shit about "standards of care".

Side affect: let's say, if you've ever been constipated, you won't be, ever again.

Posture: Somewhere in the first pages of Supple Leopard is his take on posture. It's made an immense difference to me. Sick people have that.

A lot of people pay the site this compliment: "man, you really kept me sane during these past bad years."

306 Yeah most people are deficient in Magnesium. I had all sorts of aches and pains and weird things that vanished once I started taking a couple of magnesium tabs in the morning.

AVOID BUYING THE SHIT YOU GET AT THE STORES!

It's the oxide form and the most poorly absorbed form. You'll get almost nothing from taking the recommended dose and you don't want to take fistfuls of them.

I take these: https://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-Absorption-Magnesium-Supplement/dp/B000BD0RT0

When my dad was old and sick, I drove him to show him the printing shop where I work. I opened the garage door and drove my car into the shop area. I wanted to show him around the place and the office where I worked, but he didn't feel like getting out of the car.

He said, "You have an office?"

I said, "Well, it's a room with desks, computers, and files, so yeah, I guess."

Then I realized that the word meant something different to him. I work in a small business, but he used to work for a corporation, and an "office" was something only the bigwigs had. The worker bees worked on the shop floor or in the field.

I thought it was kind of interesting. He seemed impressed that I have an "office". Yeah, Dad, I made good.

For universities in the West, I'd think that medicine and engineering are probably worthwhile. That leaves Western medicine for university training.

It seems to be taking some time to load. Maybe it's just me.

I have a 220Mbps connection and gave up.

415 I'm off to bed. I'll let the ONT overnight and check out the gifs in the morning. If the pixy hamsters haven't died of exhaustion by then.

416 Plus, you'll have one up on the native German speakers, because you will not only then be able to speak German, but can also say "squirrel" and "penguin."

417 i woudln't do a scandi language. I'm not interested
in languages for the pure sake of languages. I want bang-for the-buck --
i want the language to be used by a lot of people.

What was that gibber they used in Firefly to swear?

That is the language of the future.

418 What the holy hell is going on with the ONT?

I tried to post a comment and got THREAD CLOSED.

419 rickl, Weirddave did this awesome ONT filled with funny GIFs that he tied all together into a commencement speech.

Unfortunately, it was all too much for Pixy's hamsters and they just stroked out.

421 "Last year my son stepped on mechanical pencil lead. He went and had a doctor take it out. It made a knot and hurt. I made him another appt 6 months later, they squeezed out a half inch of pencil lead (graphite). "

When I was a kid, I somehow managed to jam a pencil into my left hand. The graphite broke off, stayed in. Still there, some 35 years later. There's a little black spot on my hand, and a "knot" I can feel under the skin.
