Thursday Personal Projects Thread
So my only ongoing project, still not begun, is taking climbing lessons. I'd planned for this week or the next but now I'm wondering if I should wait.
Because, as hard to believe as it might seem, my grip strength isn't all it could be. Some of the commenters got me interested in writing again. Still no go on that, though. Does anyone have any interests or hobbies they're pursuing, or plan to? If so, let us know. Maybe you can interest others or maybe you can serve as a mentor for n00bz. One thing I'm thinking about doing is getting back into learning Spanish, which I started, like most things, with boundless enthusiasm, and then, like most things, dropped like a lump of dogshit. Given that our Corporate Overclass is pretty determined this be a bilingual nation, and given that Spanish is a well-organized language which seems, I think, relatively easy to learn, would anyone be interested in a Spanish thread at some point?Comments

As for a Spanish thread, I might be interested. Took some classes in high school and couple courses in the army. It's rusty at best, but it is a reasonably easy language.

i'm close enough to the end of french training that I can move on to a different language.

Perhaps I'll finally make an appointment with my HMO to get a PT referral for my left arm elbow and shoulder crap. The joints keep getting slightly out of whack, my chiro fixes them monthly but I should get some PT exercises to keep things aligned.

When I finally retire, I'm planning on spending lots of time contemplating the insides of my eyelids. That, and gardening. The fact is, though, that I may well be one of those people who just don't do well in retirement. I need intellectual stimulation, but find it hard to commit the effort to get it. My job forces me to do it, and that's probably a good thing.

I did climbing as a young man. If you're worried about lessons, I wouldn't be. Most of the people who take introductory courses have no hand strength or coordination. It's when you get past that level that you'll need to step it up.

I have also found my inner artist and I am painting different types of fabric and cutting them into precise squares and triangles for a quilt for my new daughter in law. I've never done anything like this so it's taking a while.

I've been shooting for a long time but just reconnected with it. It was really refreshing mentally because it was like regaining something I lost.
I really want to unplug as much as possible. It was just consuming my life. Ow with quitting the NFL and swearing off most unproductive media type activities I'm actually feeling healthier and happier.

You get a great workout, it's extremely mentally stimulating as you try to figure everything out and you might just use it one day to escape when some crazy liberal pops out of the bushes and latches onto you.
It's so rewarding about going onto the mat and shedding all your ego for an hour. There is no bullshit status on the mats; what you all do on the outside doesn't matter.
Plus - and this is gonna sound weird - but there's an odd kind of bonding when you roll with these people day after day, and literally put your life and well-being in their hands, they stop EVERY single time you tap. It's awesome.
You don't need to "get in shape" first or have any background btw. Just show up, put on the white pajamas and have fun.

I started Italian, but didn't keep up with it.. I found if you cannot devote some time every day, you just end up repeating lessons over and over. It is structured very much like Rosetta Stone.. but it's free.
I want to get back into woodworking. My garage has been a mess for quite some time and I am trying to organize it to have space. It's been a real job. I made a new workbench last year - on wheels so I could put it away when done, but I need more room and I'm cleaning out years of old unused stuff and setting up a tool storage wall with lighting.
I've made furniture and stuff in the past - desks, tables, etc.. but nowadays I would like to make fancy jewelry and keepsake boxes, for gifts and perhaps sell them.

I note too that the accents here in Texas are very, very different than those I would hear in Virginia...

I have a TON of notes/research/ideas from grad school and after that I want to turn into something.
I have two ideas how to do this.
Something humorous and factual - right now a 'global warming discussion with a liberal' type of piece. This is not meant for publishing or anything, just a way to get all the facts in place that some LIV's may eventually come across. Problem 1 I've already discovered is that there is SO MUCH showing how global warming/green movement is a scam that it's impossible to fit it all in a short little novella. So kind of at a standstill on this.
Would LOVE some of the hordes help on this.
My other project is something I've been working on recently. In much the same vein, except using a fictional story with real world events to maybe shift some minds and display some alternative points of view to the LIVs. Right now it's very tongue in cheek and only ~1/4 done (about 100 Word pages) but it's getting there. I've never taken a creative writing class after high school, but with all the BS going on in the world I needed an outlet to express everything. Turned out to be this.
Already I see about 1,000 issues with what I've written, but sometime soon I'll try and find some family/friends/others who wouldn't mind dumping some time into reading something pretty bad but hopefully full of decent concepts and things that may make you laugh.
tl:dr: I really love writing even though I have no experience doing it creatively. Have a few projects I'm working on in spare time. Would love constant badgering from the horde to try and keep me on top of it.

i'm going to do italian after spanish. I hear Italian is french vocabulary with Spanish pronunciation. Once I get the spanish pronunciation, should be relatively easy for me to pick up a third romance language.
(And based on the italian i can see, the vocab is very french: encore = ancora, mais = ma, for example.)

Ace, and others, if you're gonna do stuff, why not video record it for posterity?!?
I recommend everyone buy an action camera. They're really cheap now. You can set them up to record all your activities, such as rock climbing or kite flying or whatever.

I'm going to start taking yoga at least once a week, twice if I can. I'm also taking a swing dancing class to brush up on the basics. Once I get out of school I plan to pay for some private argentine tango lessons.
I also have a mandolin that's sitting unused on my couch. That needs to change.

My kids liked Krav Maga Self Defense. Pretty bad ass. It's like a
mish-mash of martial arts but very practical and not much waste of time
stuff. More "What do I do if a guy grabs me by the collar" stuff. The
studio they went to even had a class they taught at a local bar about
avoiding/handling a bar fight. Bad ass, right?

The best I can say about it lately is that I DID submit a story for publication. But it's a reprint, so I deserve little glory there.
I should sacrifice more of my goof-off time to write, as I did a few years ago.
I did get accepted to writer's workshop in Maui, so I will likely do some outlining for some stories for that. The theme is 'water' so lots of room for ideas there.

He says people =say= "my fingers are too short" but demonstrates that, in fact, your fingers are too long. Everyone's are.
Anyway, if it's really a problem, it can be remedied with a smaller guitar. If you like plucking strings, there are a bunch of different variations if different sizes. Like, I also play the Ukulele (though not really well), and mess around with banjo, lute, this Brazilian guitar, etc. But they all feel different under the fingers.

Legos are fun, but I'm not super creative with them, so I stick to the instructions and it's more like a meditative/tactile fulfillment hobby. I made a promise to stop buying sets until I build what I have, so now my studio is just full of sets to build. lol
I did take up dance over the past couple years, but while it was fun, I got bored with the offerings - it was ballroom type stuff and I really would prefer to learn something that doesn't necessarily need a partner.

For Ace, living in New York City, I would recommend gourmet cooking. It would get him out of the apartment, teach him how to cook healthy meals, put him in an upscale environment with lots of women and hopefully get him laid.

I just watched that video the other day! He's really good.. I subscribed to his channel.
I'm an acoustic player, so I don't go for all the shredder videos out there. He has a really good presentation style. I'll watch it again this weekend with my guitar in hand.. barre chords have become difficult for me over the year because of some arthritis. But he had some really good positioning tips that are not intuitive in that video that I would like to try.

When I was younger I played, semi-professionally. My problem wasn't that my fingers were too short but that both of my index fingers are crooked, which made it much more difficult for me. But I enjoyed playing so I dealt with it. The crooked pointers kept me from ever being as good as I wanted to be and could have been, but I was good enough to actually make some money at it. If Tony Iommi could play with his finger issues, I figured why couldn't I.

Starizona in Arizona (just google it). If you live in the Tucson area there is usually a get together on Friday and Saturday evenings. You can go and watch people and look through their equipment and talk until forever.
Most towns have an astronomy club and they will be glad to show you the ropes. Do not worry about experience.... all of us started out not knowing much more than the bright thingy in the daytime was the sun and the one at night was the moon (unless you live in the Pacific Northwest, in which case, forget it).

I don't recommend that method, though.
i recommend checking children's books out of the library in the target language and making sense of them. And there is a type of book called an "Easy Reader" which takes you from child's level vocab to, um, a slightly older child's vocabulary through simple stories and conversations. Very helpful. I swear by those for one's first pass at a language.
In addition, there is a website called Radio Lingua which has all these podcasts-- Coffe Break French, Spanish, Italian, german. twenty minute mini lessons. Another good start.
I find rosetta boring as fuck and would not recommend it.

The Original Strength guys argue that posture is something that just happens when you've got your brain/muscle shit together. There's actually a lot of support for that.
You don't really want to be fighting the way your body stands; you want your body to stand well just naturally. The slouching and loping comes from muscles getting locked up.

The health benefits are tremendous and I dropped ~25lbs in record time and people are really noticing. Which is something considering my age (59) and the number of significant past injuries I have to work around.
It is also a great way to socialize and when I want nothing to do with another human, it can be a great escape. So I highly recommend it.
But be forewarned. It is easy to throw a lot of cash down this paticular hole if you don't have a mentor.
No, the guy at the local bike shop probably isn't the best choice for mentoring.
Go sites like "meetup.com" and look for a riding group. Ask them for recommendations.

Anyway, if it's really a problem, it can be remedied with a smaller guitar. If you like plucking strings, there are a bunch of different variations if different sizes. Like, I also play the Ukulele (though not really well), and mess around with banjo, lute, this Brazilian guitar, etc. But they all feel different under the fingers.

The activities here are numerous - hiking, climbing, ice rock climbing, camping, hunting, fishing, horse riding, rafting, etc.
I don't want to do any of it. I miss the diversity of larger cities that has multiple cultural venues, concerts, shopping, restaurants, etc. Although I do not miss the traffic, crowds, and higher cost of living.
I still haven't figured it out yet.

For Korean, I have a bunch of apps on my phone that make learning into a game, starting with the basic structure of the language, like a child. I keep intending on going to a site that has a bunch of children's material, but I'm a bit lazy. So, I've stuck with the apps and once in a while I learn some vocab. It'd be better if I was more motivated, but because I'm doing it for fun, it gets left to the side more often than not.

Scales and cadences, fifteen minutes every day. Start with the "C" scale, do it for a week or two until you're proficient. Then add the "G" scale and do the same. Then start adding in others. Don't worry about speed, just accuracy. Also, don't worry about arpeggios yet, either.

I work on the C scale exclusively right now, trying to learn which notes are which and how to move my fingers. Since I travel a lot I don't do it every day (and don't want to), but three days a week. My biggest problem, believe it or not, is getting my fingers to spread out and use multiple fingers. I keep unconsciously trying to pick with one finger. Must be a brain problem.

No it will not. You hang it above the door. There are studs above most doors where you drill it into and Screw it in with long sturdy wood screws.
They are awesome because they serve as a stress reliever as well. You get tense and go hand from the board for a few minutes or more. Do this throughout the day many times and your grip strength will blow up.

Funny enough, I was taking a barre class at the gym with my mom, but we had to stop due to some unrelated injuries. That was fun and I kind of miss it. Barre seems to have become a popular thing lately. There have been several "barre studios" that popped up in the city over the last year.

None, really, besides: do it for your own amusement. Don't even think about publishing, because nobody knows anything about how to sell books anyway. As far as getting the thing written, I found that having at least an outline of the major plot points is best before starting, but it's good to leave room for the characters to do what they want to do in between. I know that sounds pretentious and authorly, but it really does happen.
After that, it's just a matter of doing it. Even a few hundred words every couple of days will add up to a book in a couple of years.

That is true! I have taken the train to Denver to get my city fix and it is a beautiful ride. In Spring and Summer, all of the rafters moon the train while going through the canyons and it's a hoot.
For a shorter trip, Glenwood Springs is a nice little get away as well. I'll check out what's happening in Aspen on their website....thanks for the idea

I'd already played with lacto cultures in making creme fraiche, and sourdough yeast/lacto cultures (a bit time consuming but worth the trouble once you get the hang of it).
About a month ago I decided to take the plunge and make home-fermented sauerkraut for the fall. I ordered the airlocks (I went with the silicone rubber type with the nipple) and rustled up some half gallon Mason jars. You'll also need sea salt and a kitchen scale. Hand shredded the cabbage and then massaged/pounded in 2% by weight of sea salt until plenty of brine was extracted and then packed into the jars, topped with the airlocks and left on the counter at room temperature. I packed a bit too high, and so the initial CO2 production forced lots of brine out of the airlock but otherwise a complete success with no trace of non-beneficial microbe production. The 4 week sauerkraut is very good - crisp and tangy without being overly tart. (Store-bought sauerkraut is not actually fermented but mixed with vinegar and is not probiotic, while being overly tart without the nuance of flavor).
Next up is naturally fermented Caribbean Peppersauce from my crop of Scotch Bonnets.
I've also resolved to finally make a Ship in Bottle and without a kit. I'm thus far only at the sourcing basswood and ordering books from Amazon stage. I ran across this blog and probably the neatest example of the art that I've seen thus far:

My personal project is learning Morse code. My great-uncle worked for Union Telegraph as a telegrapher, and it will be useful in the camps. I'm up to 83% accuracy for 27 out of 44 characters. I use a computer simulator, and it works pretty well.

I got started by watching Korean dramas and it's the first language that made me interested in learning it for fun, just by the way it sounds. Agreed on the alphabet - makes it pretty simple to start. I'm at the stage where I can sound out words and if I know the word I can actually read it without slowing down. (Personal victory for me.)

Meh. I understand not wanting to make everything political, but they don't seem to understand that the boycotts are a response to the attempt by the left to politicize everything. I'd love to spend a Sunday watching football, or go to a Marvel movie, or any number of concerts. Climbing is a great work out but you do need good hand strength (free climbing at sorta safe spots is a good way to build both hand strength and confidence). Biking and hiking are both pretty good if have the space to do them. Lifting small weights in different ways to stay toned not to build muscle. Ice skating is a pretty good workout.
A martial arts thread I think could work on this here smart military blog. I will mention the book Bruce Wrote, "Dao of Jeet Keen Do" it has some interesting ideas in it.

Hey so for this and for anyone thinking about dancing... go to a place that teaches theatre or look up who's doing choreography for local shows and find out where they teach. The nature of musical theatre choreo requires them to know how to dance in every major style, for men and for women, and to be good at teaching it. No guarantee they're sane though.

The class I took was some method that was for people who'd been injured - the instructor teaches with the cirque du soleil groups up in Vegas from time to time. It was intense, but not difficult, with barre and mat work, utilizing bands and balls. She'd also do a little choreography, which was pretty exciting, aside from the students who didn't pay attention to the other people in the room.
Pointe is hard! I don't think I'd ever be able to do it after watching others do it. A lot of admiration towards anyone who can do pointe.

I had 15,000 (not a typo -- fifteen thousand) unanswered emails to the Archive dating back to 2006. That's right -- ten years of unanswered emails just sent to one of my email in-boxes. And I saved them all. Since about April of this year, ALL my spare "hobby time" has been spent answering and dealing with these letters.
About 70% were just "fan mail" -- to which i gave short police replies.
About 10% were "Letters to the editor" -- about half in favor of the Archive, and about half death threats and fatwas and so forth. The juiciest ones I uploaded to the "Mail" page.
And finally, the killer-diller -- about 20% were SUBMISSIONS to the Archive or suggestions or corrections. And I plan to implement every single one.
I have by now worked through well over 97% of those 15,000 emails, but the ones that remain are the most difficult ones of all -- people who sent a single email that contained as many as 70 new images (!!!), each of which requires a massive amount of research for its caption. Days and days and days of work to just deal with each email, sometimes.
In the process, I am updating and correcting and amending and adding to the Archive every day, with the eventual plan being for it to be one of the cornerstones of the Internet, the ultimate irrevocable ICBM of anti-shariah stand for freedom. Every fuckin' picture ever made of Mohammed for the last 1400 years, motherfuckers. Mirrored on servers in every corner of the globe. Take THAT!

I am in a long-running "conversation" (i.e. dispute) with a loved one over the principles behind and the efficacy of the Alcoholic Anonymous system.
This person wants to get rid of something tey classify as an "addiction," and are sort of halfway toying with AA principles. However, they ALSO are trying to use willpower and self-directed wisdom and energy to solve the issue. But I keep pointing out that AA is the OPPOSITE of "trying to fix it yourself" -- in AA, you literally have to "give up" trying (because you are "powerless to fix this") and place your fate in the hands of the Higher Power.
So how can you simultaneously "giving up" and ALSO trying your darnedest?
We've actually gotten pretty deep into this: My theory is that the very act of (pretending to) "give up" is a way of inducing a placebo effect in the subconscious, such that you yourself can only solve the problem when you "stop trying" to solve the problem -- like when Spock and Kirk are trapped in the forcefield prison, and only Spock can escape because the forcefield doesn't work if you had no intention of escaping, and Spock can go "No Mind" and pass right through, while Kirk is too wilfull.

AA works if you are gratuitously messing up an otherwise ok life with addiction to drink. If you have real problems, though, it's hard to relate to most people in the meetings I've found. And the main underlying mechanism of the program is really just socializing. The "fellowship". The sponsor. If you don't have that, the program has nothing. So if you are introverted, that would also make it of limited utility.

I use to quit drinking for months at a go, then go on benders.
Finally decided that the effort was not worth the reward. AA, for some, is just another addiction. They become addicted to the program and it becomes their life. That is good for some people, beats being in DeTox.
Also, AA's support group is really good and non judgemental. Just a bunch of fellow drunks trying to keep sober. Some are more in "The Program" than others. I can't judge, there are A LOT of really messed up people that AA has saved.
The best way to stop drinking? Don't put any in your mouth.

Oh, cool idea! I could do a 30th anniversary ale. I think we all started with an amber ale, although I wouldn't wish to recreate my first! I started brewing in South Carolina while in the service; no cellar and no AC ... it was awful (both the beer and the living conditions)!

She'd come in after 7 when most people had left for the day. She told me that her supervisor & owner of cleaning business was a doctor where he came from,had been here longer than she had & still refused to learn English. Most of cleaning people were illegal aliens & absolutely refused to learn any English.
Louisa also had FT job at one of Boston's major hospitals. Most of the immigrants (I'm not sure if illegal or legal) refused to learn English. She had to take Spanish lessons to communicate with them. They were forbidden from speaking Spanish in front of patients.

She is the reason I know that women can abuse their husbands she did it to my Dad and us, and if my Dad tried to leave she said she would make sure he would never see his kids again. Getting rid of TV helped me. TV plus booze is a good soother. With no TV, you realize you're just drinking for drinking's sake. NTTAWWT. But you become more aware of that "hobby". Just my thoughts.

I'm changing careers kind of based on this. Hate my job a bit (it's not terrible, but it's gotten suffocating as a "youngster"). Took a look at what I like to do (making things is the common thread) and looked for programs that would teach me employable skills. Ended up finding a program that is focused on jewelry design and technology - combining foundations of design (including how to design for form and function) with 3D design programs and 3D printing. It's hopefully what I've been looking for the past several years. I figure I'll be able to translate what I learn into multiple paths, so I won't be totally pigeonholed. I'll let you know in a couple years if it works out.
Can't be worse than how my life is now. At the worst, I'll have wasted 7 months and some money. At best, I'll be able to transition into a creative career that gets me employed and around people.

What I didn't realize is that the Maiden material would also push me to improve my rhythm playing skills -- which I thought were up to task, but then I had to work for a couple of weeks to be able to get through the entire intro to "Number of the Beast" using all downstrokes, at album speed, without my right forearm seizing up from cramps about 3/4 of the way through.
Did my first gig with the Maiden tribute about 6 weeks ago; next one coming up in a few more weeks, in Sacramento. Got three additional songs to learn before that one - no problem - and also need to work on the first lead to "Caught Somewhere In Time," which is the most challenging of any I've had to learn for this project.

Spanish requires that you learn how to consider things differently. There's some real cultural landmines, no doubt. Verb conjugation is really how things are in Spanish. Hope this helps. Thing is this.....there a lot of successful ways to learn. I grew up around Mexicans, and I have that distinct advantage. I'm perfectly happy killing and butchering a goat, sheep, pig....you get the idea.
Mexican life is different than Gringo life. Macho is a real thing. Mexican Rodeo is way different. Lots of gambling. Anyways, here's to ya, Ace. I enjoy most of what I read here. Like the Art.
What I'm trying to say to you is this.....you will never learn Spanish without understanding the People. Mexican Society is more stratified. Essentially, if you come from a poor family, it's really hard. That's why so many young folks come here.

My theory on drinking is that you adjust your mind to think of it as food, not a drug, and thus restrict your drinking to one beer or one glass of wine or one cocktail at dinner. All of the normal person size not some had bottle of wine balloon glass or something like that.

Don't let that stop you! Join a climbing gym. Your hands will be dead after 15 min and you'll feel like a pansy. Then after a week you'll notice a big change, and after a month you'll be amazed how long your hands last. That's been my experience anyway.

Ace, if you want to rock climb and live in NYC, buy a guidebook for the Shawangunk Mountains in New Paltz. You can walk along an old carriage road and pick out your climbs using the guidebook. The climbs there are rated from very easy to impossibly hard. Most are two to three pitches
I went there to find out how good a climber I was when I graduated from high school. Being a deplorable redneck from NC and climbing no-name climbs here in the mountains I had no idea of my proficiency level. A buddy and I drove up there before Labor Day weekend in 1967 and spent a week climbing, had a great time and met some great people.
I remember listening to Cousin Brucie on WABC while drinking Lowenbrau's at night and checking out the girls at the AMC Campground. They were the first yankees this redneck ever met, alas, not the last for they have now invaded the homeland.

The health benefits are tremendous and I dropped ~25lbs in record time and people are really noticing. Which is something considering my age (59) and the number of significant past injuries I have to work around.
It is also a great way to socialize and when I want nothing to do with another human, it can be a great escape. So I highly recommend it.
But be forewarned. It is easy to throw a lot of cash down this paticular hole if you don't have a mentor.
No, the guy at the local bike shop probably isn't the best choice for mentoring.
Go sites like "meetup.com" and look for a riding group. Ask them for recommendations.

I started into cycling this past March due to my 51 year old knees not liking me running. I bought a $400 Jamis bike and I've fallen completely in love with the sport.
It is low impact, so putting in an hour or more on a ride doesn't mean the next 2 days barely able to walk. Getting out and exploring new places to ride is a major bonus.

ace, I wouldn't sweat your grip strength to put off starting climbing. Find a climbing gym and start going up the walls -- your grip strength will improve with time. Your legs do most of the work to begin with; your arms are simply finding you new anchor points from which yiu will move your legs for the next step up.
Keep your body against the wall as much as possible, otherwise the vector math works against your arms and legs.
My troop is doung the indoor gym in December and January, then outdoor cliffs in April (a first for me).

I, too, have taken up Spanish. It's a beautiful language, and I, too, have woken up and smelled the cafe and realized we are going to be a largely Spanish-speaking country.
Even though I'm kind of old, I'm not too old to get into learning another language. I, too, though, find it tends to suck the hind teat a lot of times, given real life and other pressing matters, like spending a lot of time reading the internet . . .
I was doing it along with a friend, who basically quit. A Spanish thread would help motivate me to spend more steady time on it!
As for grip (which studies show declines a great deal after 60), part of my workout consists of these little squeezy things - like an upside-down letter V, with a spring, that you squeeze together. I got beginner ones, that aren't actually way too big for my very small hands.

Short-term:
1. Find a job that doesn't suck. Or one that sucks but pays more than what I'm doing now, which sucks and has low pay. That's a shitty one-two punch.
2. My roommate and I used to have a podcast. We really would like to have a podcast again.
3. Writing project. It's going to be a blog, but could easily translate to a book if interest is there.
Medium-term:
4. Expand my stand-up career to at least being regional. This may need the
cooperation of #1, since where I am right now I would barely get paid
enough to afford the gas to drive.
5. I would like to learn Spanish, if for nothing else than to assist in #1.
6. I find tai chi fascinating. Meditation through motion, and less new-agey than yoga.
Long-term:
7. I think I finally have settled on a career choice when I grow up, which is odd seeing as how I'm 36: I want to be a CFP. It utilizes things I think I'm pretty good at: simple arithmetic, explaining complex things without being condescending, and being a cheerleader for market capitalism. Plus, Dave Ramsey won't live forever. There's a market for people who are well-versed in financial literacy and can explain it to the masses in an entertaining fashion.
8. I played the violin as a lad. Wouldn't mind re-learning it. I'd need some things first, like a violin.
9. Marriage, kids, yada yada yada. You can't hurry love.
