Post-Debate Thread: Final Thoughts

Trump did not attack Hillary very effectively. She had her attack lines memorized. He was improvising his from memories. I suspect he might bother studying for the next one. Because she pissed him off.

Hillary dinged Trump up a fair amount. However, some people view these debates and their candidates like a new car -- ever fearful of the smallest ding.

Look, have you ever had a car that didn't get a ding?

The idea that a candidate has to come through a debate without having had a glove laid on him to win is simply wrong. Its an idea borne of a lack of perspective -- people get so emotionally invested in a win that every single error seems unbearable.

Trump made lots of errors -- I can't believe he brought up taking the oil again, for example -- but Hillary's goal here was to disqualify him.

What did she do? She painted him like every other Republican gets painted in a debate. She did not succeed in extraordinizing him -- making him an extraordinary threat the Republican can not bear.

By repeating the same sorts of attacks lodged at every Republican -- wants to cut taxes, "racist," etc. -- she actually ordinized him.

Trump's demeanor was generally strong and calm. He got rattled a few times. He looked pissy when she was dropping her programmed attack modules on him.

But by and large, he kept it together.

Was he good? No. He wasn't sharp. I know people's jaws were falling open when Trump failed to pounce on her for daring to bring up emails, disclosures, and cybersecurity.

He was meh.

Hillary delivered the exact same message that all of her ads are playing around the clock. The viewer really got no new information on that front.

On the other hand, Trump stood up at the podium and kept to his basic message without melting down. (Well, except that "take their oil" like.)

Her goal was to disqualify him; his goal was to seem like an ordinary Republican. Or, at least, ordinary enough to not seem scary (while attempting to seem like a big change agent).

Neither did a very good job. But Trump did a slightly better job at is job than she did at hers.

The one good thing -- I hope -- is that sometimes Trump has to get his ass kicked a little before he starts listening to other people. He didn't get whooped by Hillary, but she did make him angry.

Maybe that will animate him to study up and make himself prepared to deliver crisp attack lines.

By the way: Lester Holt directed every single hostile question towards Trump, and purported to "fact check" him every five minutes.

We'll leave this up until around 11:30 for your own discussion. Then I'll post a late edition of the ONT (courtesy, of course, of Misanthropic Humanitarian).

Romney dominated Obama in their first debate.

Obama humiliated Romney in the other two.

Perhaps a similar path is Trump's best hope.

Trump started out strong, but let Hillary get to him. He let very easy responses go by and gave meandering rebukes.

Hillary repeated rehearsed lines.

Whoever gave her the drug cocktail to keep her up and responsive enough to spout back pre-written lines deserves a Nobel Prize.

32 Report from my LIV mother: she looked tired, unstable when walking across stage. Trump stood up to Hillary better than mom thought he would. Posted by: Bandersnatch at September 26, 2016 10:43 PM (mgbwf)

48 My only real sadz is how many attack opportunities Trump let slide right by.

He spent too much time defending and explaining, and didn't take the openings on computer security, the Clinton Foundation, Benghazi, etc.

He needs to memorize a "kill list" of topics to be SURE to drive home in the next rounds. And execute on those lists, regardless of what other shit gets thrown.

If he'll do that, he'll do 80% better than he did tonight.

My take? He didn't lose. But he lost out on a strong, clear win.

Not entirely his fault, given the attack questions and fact checking from the mod, but he handled it poorly.

If you're explaining, you're losing. Worse, he was explaining himself against BS accusations the entire time while Hillary never had to explain or justify a single thing.

Yup. Many missed opportunities, too much talking about himself, even given the need to defend.

But his theme of "you had plenty of chances, and you screwed them up," and "you make really crappy deals; I know, I'm a deal guy" came through very well.

Plus the other theme: Hillary is status quo, I am change.

For me another theme was: listening to Trump is mostly fun. Listening to Hillary is something near torture. It just keeps getting worse, the more I see of her.

96 Hmm...reading Scott Adams makes me skeptical of any claims that Trump is winging stuff.

Part of the persuasion deal is tapping into people's preconceived narrative arcs. If Trump blew all his big shots in the first debate, that would be old news by the second and third.

If you win early, there's nowhere for the story to go but down. If you lose a bit of ground early, though, there's time to make it up and turn it around later.

At least I hope this is part of the deal. Again, Scott Adams seems to have predicted Trump's narrative management pretty well thus far...

98 If I had to guess, I'd say Lester is going to vote for Hillary.

Funny how when I ask myself that question regarding all the big personalities on ABC, CBS and NBC, I come up with the same answer.

99 I don't even remember him saying anything about the oil--I must have blinked. But what I wish he had hammered is this fact: the woman has had her time to do all of these things she TALKS about--but none has been accomplished and there has been a lot of harm in the process. I wish he had pounced when she said that litany of the places she visited as Secretary of State-- ...AND BENGHAZI? Were you there? And were you UNDER SNIPER'S FIRE like they were?

102 I'm not going to lie, I wanted him to stomp her like a... thing that gets stomped hard.

But maybe by not hitting her and going nuts, he does seem un-scary.

And every time people see Hillary, they get turned off by her. Let's not forget she called all Americans racist, threatened to take away their guns, and I think worked in a claim that we're all sexist too.

103 Here's why Trump lost. 90% of this debate was all about him talking about himself.

Not entirely his fault, given the attack questions and fact checking from the mod, but he handled it poorly.

If you're explaining, you're losing. Worse, he was explaining himself against BS accusations the entire time while Hillary never had to explain or justify a single thing.

That list of responses on what she supposedly did to respond to the "stamina" question was not off the cuff. Hopefully, that will make him mad enough to study and get attack lines of his own (emails, immunity for friends, clinton cash, immigration.) However, that bs from Holt about how rosy life is for middle class under obama made him look delusional. And, it helped reinforce Trump's outreach to Ohio and PA w trade hits.

People in the inner community want law and order, too. Trump made a good point about meeting with inner city community leaders and his taking the time and effort to listen.

The quip about Dem control of the cities and asking for votes every four years and doing nothing was pretty good, too. He hit her pretty good on the violence in Chicago.

trump's criticisms of the problems are legitimate, but his solutions offer little more than slogans. too superficial and lacking enough depth to peel away any clinton supporters methinks.

clinton supporters aren't ever going to get peeled away, policy proposals or not.

clinton did provide policy details but they come across as the same sort of expensive sink hole programs we've seen for decades. her supporters will be encouraged but not much more than that.

For all the continued faith put in having a candidate put out policy papers as though they will be read and digested, can anyone name one proposal from a past election from a winner or a loser? No? Gawd, Mitt's policy proposals numbered in the many dozens and who gave a royal rat's ass one way or another?

Sloganeering has won more elections and lost more elections than any policy proposal. Like it or not, there it is.

209 If I score the debate based upon the set of prior presidential debates that I have seen, I think that Hillary (sad to say) came out on top. Her stuff was rehearsed, but it won her the debate on points.

But she didn't really score any knockout blows either. Trump flubbed several golden opportunities to strike, but he didn't make any real major slips.

I'm disappointed because I wanted to see Hillary laid low in all of her decrepitude, but I have no idea how the debate looks generally, to the people that matter, in the battleground states. Trump looks more authentic, I think. Hillary's canned statements make her look like "more of the same," but if that's what you want, I think your mind is made up already.

Holt was abominable. All of the questions were attacks on Trump. Nothing directly attacking Hillary. The purported "fact checking," including the one on Iraq, was terrible. He allowed Hillary to skate, even gave a shout out to her in a question about Hillary being the first female on the stage, etc. I'm sure the news crews around the world are very happy with his performance.

But in the end, they aren't the people that matter, either.

I didn't watch so can't say anything about actual debate, but some of what people were saying we knew: she probably had the questions ahead of time, Holt would ask questions that favored hillary and he would interrupt Trump, the audience would be stacked, and the msm would declare her the victor before it even started and would do so with a pre planned message.

All entirely predictable and the next one will be the same.

266 How do you figure this? The woman who is supposedly "the most experienced person to ever run for president" merely had to SURVIVE, and the neophyte derided as a total maniac and incompetent had to WIN against such a juggernaut?

Regardless of where the polls currently stand, Trump is still the underdog. A tie is a loss for Trump and a win for Clinton.

267 I thought it was fascinating, and I thought it was two very different debates. It reminded me of a boxing match. You had an experienced old pro and a young stud. Stud comes out throwing haymakers and other nonsense, and experienced pro easily deflects those and fights a reliable fight. But in the second half, young stud starts to figure it out, and old pro starts getting tired. Hillary was tired the last half hour.

If - and I mean IF - Trump sets down with his trainers and corner men, watches the fight film, and learns where he wasted energy and missed opportunities, he could knock her out. I think this was a draw. And I think the challenger will be drooling for the rematch.

Posted by: Vertov at September 26, 2016 11:09 PM (Aam1A)

268 Bottom line from tonight's debate: Hillary won the battle on points but Trump proved he was an acceptable alternative to be President therefore he won the war.
Hillary couldn't knock out Trump. Her job was to prove that he was totally unfit to be president. She didn't do that. Instead, she only highlighted policy differences. Trump got to stand as an equal on the stage and that's bad news for Hillary going forward.
Trump missed some golden opportunities to bring up illegal immigration, the Clinton Foundation and Pay for Play. He got flummoxed on his taxes and was weak on the racial question when he could have simply said the best way to beat racism is with JOBS! However, none of these made him look "unfit" to be president as Hillary is trying to convince everyone.
Lester Holt was a totally biased moderator. He constantly went after Trump for clarification and only once after Hillary. He tried to nail Trump on the Hillary looks issue and asked Hillary nothing even close to that hard a question. The mainstream media will be very happy with Lester's performance tonight.

270 I can't stand Trump or Clinton and wasn't going to vote for either (voting for Johnson instead). I think Trump won the first half and Clinton rallied at the end but Trump did better overall since he came across as sane, reasonable, but still outside the system. Made several mistakes though. Clinton sounded like the weasel politician she is but no big blunders. I would consider voting for Trump after the debate as long as he can keep his sh*t together and not act like a lunatic. If he could swing some Johnson voters (6.5-7% per Nate Silvers) over to his side he could certainly tighten up the race. The host lost - both Trump and Clinton stepped all over his face repeatedly - that was fun.

272 Trump made lots of errors -- I can't believe he brought up taking the oil again, for example -- but Hillary's goal here was to disqualify him.

I didn't see the debate. What did he say?

The fact is that all threats from the arab/persian/muslim world start and stop with control of the gulf oil fields. And the correct way of dealing with Iraq would have been, after that very successful lightning invasion and destruction of Iraqi forces, to take the oil fields and leave the iraqis to run around in the desert stabbing each other in the ass, as arabs are wont to do.

I hope that that's what Trump said because that is the correct answer and the only way to address the threats from the APM world. So long as the arabs and persians have control of the gulf oil fields (that they stole in the forced nationalizations of the mid 20th century - STOLE) they will remain serious threats to all of civilization. That is a simple fact.

Posted by: Bossy Conservative....outlaw in America at September 26, 2016 11:12 PM (S6Pax)

283 Hillary won this debate hands down.

The key for me to this debate is would Donald be able to paint and draw Hillary out as a Left wing Radical and a repeat of Buraq Ohama. He didn't come close.

None of Hillary's responses were radical; they were measured, even handed, well researched, well rehearsed and never inflammatory like you would see from Obama.

If Trump was a true conservative, he would have known where to hit her in her radical views, but he is not anything close to being a conservative; he is blowhard blue-collar leftie at hear - so he couldn't do it.

Except for some of his criticism of the Iran Deal, he didn't lay a glove on her.

She hit him badly on his lack of tax disclosure, making him instead of her seem like the slimy one (instead of her) and casting him as the one with something to hide.

Trump's stupid boasts about his great business empire had no substance, and so Hillary was even able to cast doubt on his business acumen.

Trump should have gone after Obama's Leftist and unconstitutional policies in detail and forced Hillary to defend them, but he is a lazy spoiled brat and couldn't be bothered to do his homework.

But the real issue was would Hillary be Obama II. Trump, to nail down the conservative vote, had to show Hillary's leftist views would be a definite threat to the nation and how his much more conservative approach would really 'make America Great again". But except his lazy "bring back Law and Order" slogan, there was nothing conservative he said to hang your hat on.

It was Hillary with her attack on his NATO comments and his comments on giving the Saudi's and Japan nukes that made Donald seem like loose cannon wild Leftist nut job instead of herself.

Time and again she went out of her way to say things like she would defend our allies, defend American interests, and stand up to bullies. Things that were nearly impossible for anyone to get Obama ever to say. She seemingly sought to reassure the middle and even the right that her Administration would not be Obama II.

Furthermore, Hillary physical appearance was much stronger than I anticipated, and Trump was not able to exploit her health problems even though he tried.

Posted by: Unsk at September 26, 2016 11:12 PM (DUgBb)

284 Hillary did not win. That thing she did on stage was not a win, and that was the best she can do. Trump can get better, tonight he did not do anything that he has not done before or did not say before, that was not heard by people already, and accepted as part of who he is.

Posted by: runner at September 26, 2016 11:12 PM (c6/9Q)

285 252 Somebody said before the debate that Trump was going to use a rope-a-dope strategy. Maybe he made her overconfident tonight, and will come out guns blazing in the next debate. I can hope, anyway.

Trump has a great point, something I was arguing for at the time. But I do wish he would take the time to explain it.

The oil reserves in Iraq are one of greatest concentrations of wealth in the world. As soon as we took possession of it, we should have placed it in a trust and used the proceeds to cover 100% of the costs of the coalition in occupying and pacifying and standing up a new government in Iraq. It is ludicrous that the US taxpayer footed the bill for all that. How incredibly frustrating it was to watch all that US treasure pissed down a creek.

Structured and defined properly, such a trust would NOT have violated the Geneva Convention.

Trump has made a point of attacking media bias against him. By being a lot more passive in this debate and letting the moderator join Hillary's offensive against him, he demonstrates that as a fact.

He will be able to hammer at that in the next debates.

This would also jibe well with the theories that I've heard that he "act nice" to appear Presidential (this time) AND that he is holding back his good stuff for the future.

Maybe wishful thinking, but this performance was weak compared to the the moves his campaign has made over the last month

Lester, let me get this straight. Hillary engineered the sluts-and-nuts attack against women who claimed her husband sexually assaulted or harassed them. In court she savaged a little girl rape survivor as a favor to a friend. Heck, during her time in the Senate her female staffers got paid less than her male staffers and you're saying I hate women because I called a woman ugly?

355 "Hillary delivered the exact same message *that all of her ads are playing around the clock.* The viewer really got no new information on that front."

That's the comforting part in this. Put that together with her being rude and condescending, and maybe she doesn't gain anything.

One concern is that her polls dropped in part, I think, because of her fainting episode. From what I saw, she came across as doing OK, healthwise. If anything, Trump was sniffling a bit. So the LIVs might get the impression she's fine, after all.

I basically concur with Ace on Trump's performance, but I would add a few things:
1) Hillary was in denial that NAFTA has hurt, and that may play VERY poorly in the battleground states
2) Hillary was actually painting a picture of everything being kind of wonderful and happy in the black community. Could that help Trump with blacks?
3) Moderator went into heavy Candy Crowley mode, and Trump did not defer like a puppy the way Romney did.

Overall, Trump missed many opportunities to really hurt Hillary, and got caught up in some stuff that he needed to scrape off more quickly, and maybe he just has some bad advice on that. But on that score, he was respectful, and she was definitely NOT. We'll see if there's a double standard on that.

It didn't seem decisive to me, but it's hard to tell how Independents - who are the only ones that matter - will respond to all that went on. Different people will pick up on different things. Hillary tried a new zinger that sounded completely lame. She took the low road on some things (Trump didn't go there), and we'll see if she gets away with it. Trump took some swipes, and we'll see if they resonated.

Hillary seemed validated - nothing much on how much of a criminal she is, nothing revealing about her health issues. that could help her. Trump didn't disqualify himself with anything, i don't think. He hung in there. I don't know if he helped himself, but he probably didn't hurt himself much, if at all, either.

356 I am convinced that was the price to get Europe to forgive Iraq's debts. Hussein had huge debt built up and when we took over we wanted the new Iraq free from his dictatorship to start out fresh. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at September 26, 2016 11:15 PM (39g3+)

That was another mistake. Why should iraq have benefited from becoming a threat to us? The "new" iraq was just iraq and should not have gotten any relief from debts that it accrued, in addition to having the oil fields retaken from them.

Bush totally fucked up just about everything in that war, which was won so quickly it was one for the history books.

We have been indulging the European financial elites for many years. 410 How many troops you reckon it would take to occupy the Iraqi oil fields and export facilities? For decades mind you. No way would the public ever support that.

I also think putting an armed force in the middle of the Middle East to take the oil would likely result in the same thing that happened in Iran decades ago when we supported the Brits and their claim on Iranian oil. Short version, hasn't worked out that well.
Posted by: JackStraw at September 26, 2016 11:22 PM (/tuJf)

Huh? We already occupied the entire country, including the oil fields, with responsibilities for some sections to our partners, like the Brits in the south.

The question is purely one of what bank accounts the proceeds of oil sales should have gone into.

In boxing, the killer instinct is the ability to hit a weakened opponent and keep hitting them until the bell rings or the referee calls a stop. This means you keep at them until they're down and done. Most importantly, you want to hit them. You want to hurt them. You want to win.

Chelsea Clinton, Princess In Waiting, needs her feelings hurt. She grows rich from her parents' corruption and--as an officer in the Clinton Foundation--knows full well what her parents are, what they're willing to do to take and hold power. To hell with kindness. To hell with Chelsea Clinton's feelings. Hit Hillary so hard her grandchildren feel the breeze.

427 >>lease. Occupying oil fields is simple work. No one lives there. It's harder, more dangerous and more expensive to occupy three blocks of a city than 5 square miles of oil fields.

Please. We aren't talking about occupying oil fields in Texas. We are talking about Iraq which is now a target for jihadists throughout the ME and not just ISIS.

They attack our troops when they are sitting inside our armed bases and you think they wouldn't be constantly attacking the troops in oil fields? And of course you assume the public who couldn't get our troops out of Iraq fast enough would go along with that? Sure.

If you aren't aware, the very first thing our CIA did after their founding was to help the Brits enforce the deal they had with Iran to work their oil fields in a piece of the action. This led to the overthrow of the elected Iranian government, the installation of the Shah and you probably know the rest.

But sure, the current jihadis who are largely financed by the same Iran wouldn't mind at all if we took the oil from a Muslim country.

Posted by: JackStraw at September 26, 2016 11:31 PM (/tuJf)

Without the oil fields most of the jihadis are neutered. The oil fields are the ONLY source of wealth, power and influence that the arab/persian/muslim world has - and the APM world only got them by stealing them from Western companies. They stole those fields. Nothing wrong with us taking them back. And, in a war, the most important strategy you can employ is to cut off the source of threat from the enemy. The oil fields are the genesis of all threats from the APM world, from many different angles - money, political power, economic power, ... The arabs proved that they viewed oil as a weapon as far back as the 70s. They are at war with us and their weapon needs to be taken from them. That is just War 101.

And occupying oil fields is not difficult work compared to occupying or securing anything else in the world. Oil is the world's lifeblood. It would be appropriate that we treated it that way.

The onus will be on Trump after this debate. His advisors are just not doing him any favours by letting the man wing it. It may have worked once or twice in his favour, and he got lucky -- but it's not a strategy for winning the White House. Whether he's lazy, or incapable of being disciplined enough to study his material and properly prepare for a debate of this nature, who knows. But, it was a poor performance on his part, and his advisors, if they're worth anything, will be having a come-to-Jesus talk with their boss.

Encouraging words!

Old news, that Megyn Kelly is destined for CNN. Since Republican debate #1.

I watched FBN, and am glad of it. Switched over to Fox - for Hannity - when Cavuto started schmoozing with asshole Cuban. Also a good move.

482 I was hoping Trump would damage Hillary tonight. He didn't. Neither candidate looked good, Trump came off as particularly unpresidential, whiffed on softballs and let Hillary get away with a lot. He had a few zingers, but Hillary knew how to better get under his skin (insult his business acumen).

It will be a close election, but Trump has to bring at least some undecided college educated voters into his camp. Tonight I'm guessing he failed.

483 "Gingrich calling this a huge Trump victory. That Dems are on the ropes, Hillary didn't give any sort of grand vision for America, but instead stooped to petty stuff. Trump was calm and collected. "

Agreed, Hillary gave no reason to vote for her.

484 Compare/contrast with Romney family post-first debate in 2012. 100x this:

Not a good performance for Trump. When his family came up on stage afterwards, they all looked like they were attending a funeral, and perhaps they were, of his presidential bid.

485 The only thing I can think of is that Trump is playing the long game.

If he hits her on all her weaknesses in 1st debate, the idiot, no attention span public will forget all about it all within weeks. Then, if he brings it all up again in the 2nd and 3rd debates, Hillary and the media will accuse him of belaboring the point and will make him look bad.

If he is smart and planning this out, he is waiting to take her out in the 3rd debate, right before the election, when everything will still be fresh in every voter's mind before they go vote.

I am sure he and his campaign have a plan. He's playing the long game. May have lost the battle tonight, but he's not trying to win the battle, he's trying to win the election.

We'll see how things play out...

486 I haven't the slightest idea of how any of that debate is gonna be received by the public. For all the shit Palin gets, she was at least able to provide a logically coherent, reasonably detailed description of policies for the VP debate at least (I remember her making E.J. Dionne look like an idiot on NPR, for assuming her accurate references to foreign policy details were hick-ish nonsense), which Trump can't even seem to do to describe the business he supposedly runs, but I don't know that that matters to people. Both candidates tonight just sort of hung in there and didn't shit their pants, which for Trump seems to be the sweet spot. Hillary, I assume, succeeded in acquiring free advertising for her late father's drape installation business.

Trump missed lots of opportunities to hit Hillary hard on her scandals, but I don't think he understands them well enough to sound like he knows what he's talking about when he brings them up, so if she has a prepared answer on any of them (and I assume she does on all of them), she can deflect and make him sound like he's talking out of his ass (as she did a bit in this debate).

Would be nice to have somebody on stage talk about conservatism at a national presidential debate, but I guess the way you advance conservatism in 2016 is by purging it from the national political conversation for 4-8 years. It's the only way, you guys.

487 I missed the 'take the oil' part, evidently. Hmm. But Trump was real life. Hillary was typical pol, she's worried about her 'granddaughters future in America, too, just like you' total bullshit. If more people believe that lie than don't, that she really does worry about terrorism, jobs, etc for her grandkids, we are totally screwed as a country and will suffer. Period.

499 Hillary's poll numbers are sagging like her 68-year-old bosom, and she needed a knockout punch. She didn't get it.

Trump just needed to avoid seeming like some sort of loon who's unfit to be President. He did that.

Advantage: Trump.

Maybe. JUST MAYBE this will be one of those deals where the elitist assholes who never get tired of being wrong "know" that this will hurt Trump, but instead it helps.

Trump held his own vs Hillary & Lester, and probably learned a lot. This may have come across well, even though it wasn't "pretty", and next time 'round Trump should be able to do MUCH better. We've already seen Hillary's (and the media's) best.

Yeah, I don't think he won tonight's debate, but it wasn't a disaster either.

Then it came to me: What if he has something good, something nobody knows he has, something truly lethal, from someone like Julian Assange. What if tonight was a set up for something He's planning to spring on her that she is completely unprepared for. He has something......and whether or not this is a good idea or not, tonight played out exactly as he wanted it to.

527 Hillary did a great job of looking smug, elitist, and above the law. Trump missed so many opportunities to slam dunk Hillary. One take-away I got was Hillary is not that good of a debater and opened herself up in almost every answer she gave.

532 Trump missed so many opportunities. The fact that he can't move beyond his "trade deals" talking points and riff about the US having the highest corporate tax rates in the world as another reason for the exodus of jobs is bewildering to me. He has a completely superficial understanding of economics and economic policy. I'm happy to see he touched on the Fed but he should have explained that for every % that interest rates rise, the $10 trillion Obama added alone is going to add $100 billion in interest to the debt. That is going to make it impossible for the country to balance the budget without a major economic boon, a massive overhaul of government spending, and/or major tax increases across every class.

I blame his inability to articulate points such as these and his lackluster performance on NeverTrumpers.
