If it's Wednesday, this must be the ONT [Weirddave]

What's in a Name?

Well, the people who live in these places better hope nothing.

funny-town-map.jpg

While it would suck to live in Blue Ball Village, (Md.) (Calling it a town is generous. I've been there, it's not even a wide spot in the road up in Cecil County) and I wouldn't wish Butternuts (NY.) on anyone, at least Weiner (Ar.) is adjacent to Cooter (Mo.), which is convenient. Bigbone (Ky.) probably wants in on that action, however. There's an outpost of Morons in Oregon (Wankers Corner), and the folks in Nebraska are living large in Beaver City. Next door in Kansas things aren't so nice with Dry Wood, although Louisiana and it's Dry Prong can probably sympathize.

Screw it, we should just cut to the chase like Austria:

Bias

Here's a really good article about drug reps wooing doctors. A behind-the-scenes look at medical education. Now, he's not wrong. Years ago I went to one of these drug company events with my father, who is a doctor. It was very nice, box seats to a Ravens game, hospitality tent catered by Ruth's Chris, the whole nine yards. After the game I asked my dad if he was going to start prescribing the drug they were touting, and he laughed and said “95% of the time (whatever generic drug) will do just as well for a fraction of the cost, but in some cases, well, it's good to have options. This one might be better occasionally”. The thing I found interesting is that the entire article just reeks of bias against drug companies. Dr. Fung is a proponent of dietary treatments, specifically the low-carb/high fat diet than many of you (including the boss) are having success with. But while condemning their bias it seems that Dr. Fung is oblivious to his own. Yes, there are a lot of conditions that can be attacked, quite successfully, with dietary changes. There are also a great many medical conditions for which we need drugs. I have a friend who is HIV+. He lives a normal, healthy life because of a drug cocktail developed by the evil drug companies. If his only option was diet, he'd have been sucking on daisies from the bitter, root end for years now.

The point is, Dr. Fung is mad at drug companies for, well, marketing their wares. If he believes his methods are better (and I think they are in many cases), perhaps he should get out and throw his own lunches for doctors rather than bitching about it. If he has a better way, then sell people on it. Convince them, show them the evidence. Market what's he's offering. It's not a dirty word.

News You Can Use

So you think you can fake your own death?

Surprisingly enough, it's not illegal as long as you don't assume another identity. Seems to be awful hard though. It does give me an idea, however. Suppose Hillary wins in November. What if everybody in America then faked their own death? What would she do then, huh? I'm a genius.

Islam Update

This Green Beret Saved A Young Boy From Being Kept As A Sex Slave And Beat His “Owner” … Obama Responded By Kicking Him Out Of The Army

There is a reason we have cars and medicine and grocery stores full of food. There's a reason why women can walk down the street unmolested and children aren't kept as slaves in America. There's a reason we can speak our mind freely and walk our streets (mostly) safely.

It's because we're better than they are.

Specifically, our culture is better than their culture. We used to take this with us when we fought. When Germany surrendered at the end of WWII, any German woman with a lick of sense or the opportunity made for the American zone as fast as she could. Why? Because the Soviet zone was an orgy of rape. With rare (and immediately prosecuted) exceptions, the American zone wasn't. Even in third world shitholes, American soldiers stand for doing the right thing. That's what this soldier did, and he got a dishonorable discharge for his trouble.

Why? Because “all cultures are equal, man”? I never see anyone making that statement moving to live in another one. Because it's not right to “force” our culture on someone else? That's what they are doing. Migrant In Court For Violent Rape: ‘I Came to Austria to F*ck the Women’. Islam means “submission”. In their culture, rape is used as a method of flaunting your superiority over populations you've subjugated. That's what all of those shouts of Aloha Snackbar! MEAN during a terrorist attack; “Our god is great, we can kill you whenever we want”. The West is losing a 1400 year old war because we refuse to recognize that we're in one.

Eastern Europe: The Last Barrier between Christianity and Islam

ETA Poster Anon Y Mous points out that the story about the Green Beret being discharged needs to be updated. Army Reverses Expulsion of Charles Martland. Good news for a change.

99 Sugar Tit is named after a sugar tit, which an old word for a type of homemade pacifier. You took a little lump of sugar or honey, wrapped it in a cloth and tied it with a piece of string. The baby then sucked on the little bulb. Hence, a tit of sugar.

The little bump in the road was named Sugar Tit because of a general store there that became a hang out for the men. Their wives complained and said it was like a sugar tit that attracted their idiot husbands.

If you ever visit Windsor Castle, near Heathrow airport, there is a sequence of about half-a-dozen rooms culminating in a Throne Room. Each one is smaller and higher than the one before, which uses "forced perspective" to make the throne [and it's occupant] appear huge and dominating to those in the previous room. And the walls of these rooms are just wallpapered in armament -- swords, pikes, firearms....

The obvious message is: "you are an ant crawling toward the Seat of Power -- at the wave of a hand, all this stuff could be pointed at you."

Or that. Either way, it's definitely an abnormal condition, but it's now being pushed as a means of turning traditional society on its head.

We need to be firm that gender is a function of linguistics, used to describe people and objects based on apparent sexual characteristics or the lack thereof, thus there are and only ought to be three: Male, Female, and Neuter. He, She, It.

There is only a linguistic need for three genders, because there is a scientific reality of two sexes. The rest is bullshit designed to confuse and degrade.

Downtown Knoxville, TN has Gay Street -- it's a nice part of town, home of the Downtown Grill + Brewery. I had picked-up a pint glass on a previous visit to my aunt's place, and found myself visiting my aunt shortly after a freak accident had broken the glass -- so I told 'em that I felt compelled to travel 3,000 miles from California to replace the glass once it broke. They were really fun about selling me a new one and packed it so well I could put it into checked baggage.

I visited my parents up there this summer and New Castle is #1 in crime in the State of Pennsylvania. It was #3 a couple of years ago but they worked hard, included heroin dealing with the meth and prostitutes and now New Castle is #1. See, if you work hard, you too can be the best.

286 @113

If you ever visit Windsor Castle, near Heathrow airport, there is a sequence of about half-a-dozen rooms culminating in a Throne Room. Each one is smaller and higher than the one before, which uses "forced perspective" to make the throne [and it's occupant] appear huge and dominating to those in the previous room. And the walls of these rooms are just wallpapered in armament -- swords, pikes, firearms

Grandma made sure of the boys was blooded.

Dynasty to consider....just in case.

Exercisin power....that walk is a Reminder....visceral reminder.

The U.S. used to understand the value of such stage management......maybe we will again.

Be good at it D..Cth

Might as well sand the rear quarter panels, and dab a little filler on the tiny areas at their rear bottom corners where tiny rust holes were welded up. Got the right panel sanded, and filler dabbed on. Began sanding on the left panel, and "Oh my!" there was a thick layer of Bondo troweled on near the door striker. And it was cracking and peeling, as is its wont, when it is piled on too thick.

Got a torch and scraper, and chiseled it all off, and sanded the panel down to more or less bare metal. Looks like it had been hit in the side, just below the door latch, and crudely repaired. I spent several hours cutting out crumpled sections, and slitting others, and now have the pillar pretty well pulled straight. I also replaced the driver's door with a better one I had on hand, and the pillar edge parallels and is flush with the door except right near the pillar where it is still low to the door. But I can work with that. Tomorrow is now welding day, I guess.

And Friday or Saturday, it looks like I am off to work at last. So there's that.

Bodywork on the modern cars seems to be more difficult. FWIU the sheet metal is thinner, but less forgiving. Stuff you could do on the older cars won't work on the newer ones. I know when my Acura got hit they just cut out the sheet metal and welded in new because it was easier and more effective than the usual methods.

What's really amusing is how you have to understand the geology of California to have a grip on what goes on here -- and how the East Coast and West Coast utterly fail on understanding the other.

On the west coast, there is a coastal range that essentially slopes off into the Pacific. We essentially have no swamps, we have no coastal plains, we have no sweltering flatlands, we have no floods....and we have no understanding of those who do.

In Southern California, there are a range of mountains where the east side drains to the Gulf of California and the west side drains to the Pacific. Moving northward, there is a section where the east side drains to the Gulf of California, the middle drains to the San Francisco Bay hundreds of miles to the north, and the west side drains to the Pacific.

The key with any race car you're going to run, without, say, a Porsche factory team budget is that it's got to be easy to wrench on.

A near perfect movie.

What you have to do is mute the sound until he looks at the watch. The intro dub gives spoilers as well as statements that contradict the movie.

I once saw a showing where the soundtrack sound from a center channel was held until that point and then transitioned to the movie sound (from L & R speakers), which preserved the audio while deleting the f**kin' overdub.

Love that movie.

SPIR used to have a dragstrip that was shared as the front straight of the road course. The problem was that when all the drag cars blasted multiple rods through the pan it dumped a bunch of oil on the pavement - right at the turn 1 turn-in to go up the hill.

It was...tolerable in the dry. In the wet all the oil would come out of the ground and you'd have car after car after car spin into the wall.

About ten years ago they finally moved the road course completely off the dragstrip at that point.

Actually, Weed is a great place to spend the night after having fought your way out of the Bay Area and headed north for hours and hours through the Sacramento River Valley.

There's a cool little park at Hedge Creek Falls in Dunsmuir, just south of Mount Shasta, where you can walk down to a Sacramento River overlook. There's Mount Shasta itself, which fancies itself a resort and is expensive, and there's Weed, which features a Pilot truck stop -- mainly frequented by decent people with jobs.

An hour and some north of Weed, you start on the Cascades. It's nice to have some caffeine and digested food in your system before the highway starts doing 4000 foot upsie-dupsies.

You have more support than you know. When Cruz beat Trump in one of the states for the first time all kinds of nasty stuff was posted bashing Cubans. As someone of Cuban descent, while offended, I blew it off. When Cruz understandably refused to endorse, I supported him. This was because of how sh*tty Trump behaved towards Cruz. Cruz seems to have values near my own. The behavior of some Trumpoids is no different from the GOPe.

No. You buy the car for $500 (it can be more if you can, as we did, then sell parts off of it to get your net purchase price down to $500 or less).

Brakes, wheels/tires, driver safety/convenience don't have to fit in the limit (the cage in our E30 BMW cost $2200). Everything else theoretically has to fit in the $500 cap but stock replacement parts generally slide.

The series has 'BS judges' who look at your car and assign penalty laps depending on whether it looks like you're cheating, may ask you for receipts. Show up with shiny aluminum aftermarket coilover struts and you're gonna eat laps.

Dunsmuir is somewhat south of Mount Shasta. There ain't much in the area to orient to. Castle Crags is nearby, and is well worth a visit -- I had a pic I took there that I used as wallpaper for years until some Ira Weatheral shithead had me embargo that drive. Another nice local hike is "The Haystack" which looks like a rounded hill from the road....but the road is on a later lava flow and the view off the backside is more impressive.

There's a whole lot of fun in the area (including up the McCloud River at the place whose native name translates to "where the salmon turn back"). And you can usually find less-expensive lodging in Weed.

It may not be a perfect case, but the guy was ignoring cop orders and acting suspiciously, and the cops deserve the benefit of the doubt until all the fog clears.

Would not like a guy who disses the cops so recklessly to be the CiC second-guessing the validity of the actions of every soldier whose boots are on the ground.

All of these police shootings are individual cases, some are merited, others clearly are not. I blame poor training and nerves on the part of the cops. It is a very bad time to be a cop, a lot of people want you dead for no other reason than you are a cop. Cops know this.

Things started out looking like a tasting menu and got progressively weirder -- with service sometimes giving us more than one thing at a time. By the time we hit desserts, we were getting multiple plates of multiple things on each plate. We ended-up sampling things for about four hours -- it would have been full Roman Emperor decadence if only we'd have had scantily-clad servants feeding us. Just a wild experience.

By the time we hit desserts, we were getting multiple plates of multiple things on each plate. We ended-up sampling things for about four hours -- it would have been full Roman Emperor decadence if only we'd have had scantily-clad servants feeding us. Just a wild experience.

641 When I look at my dental X-rays, I feel like that guy, Jaws (wasn't it?) from that James Bond flick.

You know what? X-rays don't show decay under a filling.

I've had one tooth removed - got a bridge, so it feels natural. Couple of crowns. One root canal. One wisdom tooth broke off, dentist was too lazy to put a crown on it so he just slapped some cement in there. (Kidding - I agree with him on hassle v convenience - it worked.)

I just want to keep the ones I've got for, oh, another fifty years or so, or until they figure out how to re-grow teeth, whichever comes first.

So, off to bed, so I can get up bright 'n' early, get my
mostly-painless repairs done before lunch, and thank God I live in America in the 21st Century.

Good night, Gracies. And remember: Difficulties may challenge mediocrity and defeat the fearful, but they only stimulate the true children of the Most Highs.

https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2016/09/20/ berkeley-may-remove-free-online-content-rather-complying-disability-law

To summarize:

Major university, just to be nice, puts a whole ton of research materials and course curricula online for FREE for anyone and everyone to use if they want.

The US Department of Justice, paid for with your tax dollars, devotes countless man-hours investigating this dastardly deed, and determines that the university is committing a HATE CRIME against DEAF PEOPLE because some of the videos in the online course don't have decent SUBTITLES.

The DOJ's crack investigation team, with nothing better to do, threatens the university: Spend $$$ sprucing up your subtitles to our exacting standards, or be prepared to face CIVIL RIGHT VIOLATIONS charges, suckas!

Result: University removes all free material form the internet, because that's vastly cheaper than spending half their budget dicking around with subtitles on thousands of videos of lectures and slideshows.

So, in the end, NOBODY gets to use the formerly free online content.

Another successful hate crime investigation by the Obama Administration! High-fives all around!

OP:
The Department of Justice found that much of this online material is in violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act, which requires colleges to make their offerings accessible to people with disabilities.

Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
The final version of the bill was signed into law on July 26, 1990, by President George H. W. Bush. It was later amended in 2008 and signed by President George W. Bush with changes effective as of January 1, 2009.

I actually have a great deal of respect for you as a long time 'ette and contributor. I've also noticed that you have a history with certain people and occasionally engage in unfocused attacks using phrases such as "False Humility" and "Virtue Signalling" to attempt to disguise the target and direction of your attacks. How 'bout you admit that you hate Slapweasel's guts, you want to slander him, you never intended to play fair, and that you'll make common cause with Buzzion against him?

In the context of "hating him anyway", the phrases "False Humility" and "Virtue Signalling" cut the other way -- which was exactly the point of my "mirror" observation. According to the "old school", it's honorable to hate someone, it's honorable to duel....but it's dishonorable to throw "False Humility" and "Virtue Signalling" into the AEther to have it stick to random someones.
