Overnight Open Thread (16 Sep 2016)

Look, if the FBI couldn't bother to press charges against Clinton with all the evidence available, how will they ever get enough to build a legal case against Russian hackers? Especially if they use the "reasonable prosecutor" standard they've established.

Climate Change

Americans not willing to pay much to battle climate change. That's because it's a fools errand. The climate is gonna do what it wants to do.

Freezing Means Melting

Heh. The Polar Ocean Challenge: "We were lucky to get through."

For climate alarmists, freezing means melting. The were held up for over a month by excess ice in the Northeast Passage, and only got through because a storm pushed the ice off-shore. Then they raced to get through the Northwest Passage, and made it by a matter of hours before it froze up.

Their conclusion : "very obvious melting"

Blue Stahli

OK, this is gonna be my workout music for the week. You'll get a speeding ticket if you drive to it.

MSM Enraged

Just furthers the image of the MSM being biased. Press enraged over Trump. Funny I don't remember hearing about the Clinton Press Pool being "enraged" over Clinton's campaign banning certain reporters, locking them in closets or barricading them from Hillary in public places. Sure, they posted some politely worded warnings demanding access but I don't seem to recall feeling that they were outraged. More like they were pleading with their queen to please, please let them have some scraps from the table so they can appear to be doing their job or something. Outrage? Yeah, not so much.

Hunter Troop

Norway's 'Hunter Troop' is the world's first all-female special operations unit.

candidates must complete modules in Arctic survival, counterterrorism, urban warfare, long-range patrols, and airborne operations. According to the Norwegian Special Operations Forces Command, only 13 of the unit's 317 candidates made it through the Jegertroppen course in 2014 - a 96% attrition rate that is similar to the Forsvarets Spesialkommando's. 2015 posted similar numbers.

Eagle vs Drone

Action occurs at 1:50 timeframe.

Movie Soundtracks

This is actually a pretty good question. I can't think of a theme either. Why aren't Marvel Film scores more memorable?

Pixels

AI software found to be able to identify people in blurred images.

Perceptions

Obama's U.S. a pushover for foreign powers, critics say. No shit?

10 It Doesn't Affect You, But It Does

John Donne once said that "no man is an island". Society has evolved, does evolve, and will evolve, with the actions of each to one degree or another affecting it and being affected by it. Society isn't some abstract idea or social construct of the conspiratorial vein. The libertarian ideal that everyone can do what they want and anything not affecting others in the strictest 1st degree will not have a depreciative or dilatory effect others, and thus society, is based upon a blind faith that the way, the truth, the light, of Randian enlightenment can not, and will not, be snuffed out a la Anthem because the choices of others does not, in the strictest 1st degree, command another.

"Their nationally representative poll found
that 43% of Americans were unwilling to pay an additional $1 per month
in their electricity bill to combat climate change -- and a large majority
were unwilling to pay $10 per month."

The rude reality, although most Americans are too dopey and disconnected and distracted to have figured this out, is that in most of the country, ordinary consumers are already getting socked with increased monthly costs FAR in excess of these thresholds, due to things like "renewables" mandates.

55 "So, was Obama birthed in Kenya or Hawaii?"

I personally incline to the concept that he was born in Hawaii under circumstances other than the official story, probably having to do with Frank Marshall Davis. And that he later made up the Kenya stuff for what at that stage in his life were the social and academic advantages accruing to exotic foreign origin.

On the other hand, there were all those Kenyan kin of Obama's who were happy to point to the village hut where he had entered the world to bless us all with his omniscient magnificence. Then it was noted to them that they were damaging his chances to become President, at which point they all clammed up tightly.

an amazing film, one of the champs. here's the question:

at the beginning of the great chase scene (my fave of all time) hackman flags down a car and says "police emergency, i need your car". is he legally empowered to take the car? must the owner give it to him?

It's been high on my bucket list this whole election year, with this as the top of my list

1. Hillary loses her final run for POTUS to another guy from out of no where, who burns through her carefully laid schemes. First she loses to the Magic Teflon Negro with a vaporware resume and the ability to Talk White While Being Barely Black. Then she loses to a flamboyant wheeler dealer who has NEVER held any public office.
2. During her concession speech to The Donald, she just can't hold the bile in any longer and she starts screaming and ranting and raving about everyone from Bill on down the line. During her rant, she names names, dates, places, crimes, since she didn't win, she's going to burn it all to the ground.

I don't know if it is legal, but it has its roots in English common law, and was common custom on the Scottish Marches, where a legally empowered individual - a sheriff or marshal - could claim "hot trod" and impress all available men to pursue a raiding band.

178 93 just finished watching "the french connection" on tcm,
an amazing film, one of the champs. here's the question:

at the beginning of the great chase scene (my fave of all time) hackman flags down a car and says "police emergency, i need your car". is he legally empowered to take the car? must the owner give it to him?

Posse comitatus is the common-law or statute law authority of a county sheriff, or other law officer, to conscript any able-bodied man to assist him in keeping the peace or to pursue and arrest a felon, similar to the concept of the "hue and cry." Originally found in English common law, it is generally obsolete; however, it survives in the United States, where it is the law enforcement equivalent of summoning the militia for military purposes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posse_comitatus

It stands to reason that if the cops can commandeer you, they can commandeer your car if that's what circumstances require.

The worst part is, even when this disgrace has left office, he will...get this...NEVER FUCKING GO AWAY! He will be the go-to as POTUS Emeritus for everything that goes pear-shaped in the next administration.

--------------------

I'm trying to think of his future. He'll be irrelevant, suave, passe, cosseted, detached, passive-aggressive, triumphalist even as his legacy is dismantled, wealthy, contrarian, narcissistic as ever, bored, vain, and lazy.

I think the Trump kids are going to suck the air out of his post-presidency.

Chi, I don't want you getting in trouble on account of this bum. Sounds like he stole something rather valuable. If the police think you're an accomplice to this bum they can start to seize your shit and not even tell you about it. It is police state scary stuff. I doubt the item he stole is worth that level of pain.

The Grifone Sangiovese is a good value. I was first in Tuscany when I was 15, and was startled to find restaurants putting out jugs of wine at meals for free -- but charging up the yin-yang for water (and even more for sodas!!). 221 Reporters bristled at their treatment during Donald Trump's campaign event Friday, where the GOP presidential nominee only briefly addressed his past skepticism of President Obama's birthplace and abruptly left without taking any questions.

Trump then barred reporters from joining a tour of his new hotel, which prompted the pooled television reporters to erase their video from the tour, according to multiple reporters.

This highlights not only the bias of the press, but also their childish stupidity. They deleted their copy of a tape, but the footage had already gone out. So, what does deleting it accomplish? Their version of stomping their feet, I guess. The whole 30+ minutes is on youtube.

In the eastern S.F. Bay Area, if your bicycle gets ripped off, go to the Oakland flea market the following weekend or two. Get there early. Odds are you'll find your bike.

Best not to kick up a fuss with the seller. The bike may have been through four or five pairs of hands before showing up in that flea market stall.

Amazon can be pretty handy. You refuse to shop/purchase online?

Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at September 17, 2016 12:33 AM (R+30W)

Amazon was a major component in my security breach. If you know the (1) name, (2) house address, and (3) email address an Amazon customer uses with Amazon (and, BTW, #1 and #2 are printed on their address labels -- for all I know, #3 may be, as well).....then you can call up their customer service line and (after an hour wait) get ALL of the other information they have about you -- your recent purchases; your recent wish-list items; the type, last four digits, and expiration date of every credit-card you've ever used there....they'll even let you reset the password on the account.

Worse yet, this same information is commonly found on resumes (you don't use your business email and address on your resume, right?).

The way Amazon handles your account data is worse than worthless -- it can enable further security assaults. For example, let's say your prior orders includes an HP printer -- what could be easier than to create a spoof email supposedly from HP that purports to sell you toner cartridges but actually dumps malware into your system?

At a minimum, I would advise using a separate-from-anything-else email address for Amazon -- as well as a separate-from-anything-else credit card.

I wonder if there will be a lot of little girls dressing up as "Ghostbusters" this year. That's one of the things they have tried to push as a positive from that shitty movie. And while there might be some I doubt its any significant number.

Well, most of the MCU scores riff off of the same themes and melodies. Basically, the Avengers score, where the themes are pushed the most. They may not be 'memorable', but they're consistent across multiple movies.

316 #295 I find both Alan Cumming and Famke Janssen to be boat anchors on the film. Sean Bean and Izabella Scorupco are fantastic, though. Robbie Coltrane is always a pleasure to see on-screen as well.

At the end, the biggest problem is the mis-match of styles (goofy Roger Moore crap followed by morosely-serious conversations about Bond's dark nature) that never once gel together.
Posted by: Deplorably Rusty Nail at September 17, 2016 01:05 AM (S2VsH)

yeah, you are giving it much more thought than I am.

Lost of excitement, hot girls, bond wins. famke jansen's character is a little cartoonish but she is hot, and slutty, so who cares. opening was one of best bond openings - ever.

319 I don't think Fox has it in them anymore, but if no one does an hour-long special on how *specific* MFM figures are *specifically* covering up Blumenthal/Brooks/Birtherism, then nobody is really trying.

It has to be *specific*, just like people (except rabid fans on both sides) tunes out vague generalities, which is a huge weakness of politics in general, they will tune this out if specifics aren't delivered.

Soundbites deliver *a* poll, hard detailed work changes people's understanding of history.

I use a separate email for online retail stuff. But, I don't have a separate one for each and every retailer.

So
are you just avoiding amazon, or are you not doing any kind of online

Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at September 17, 2016 12:58 AM (R+30W)

Each retailer is evaluated according to its potential threat. That Amazon's security is absolute crap, and that I've been burned by it before, warrants special care.....then, again, they've got the stuff, so they sometimes warrant special effort. Fundamentally, though.....I really don't buy that much stuff. I'm still driving a 1994 car and using a Kenmore washing machine manufactured in the 80's.

The BMJ just published a study showing their no link, repeat no link, between saturated fat and cardiovascular disease, stroke risk disease(clogged arteries here, whatever they call it), and diabetes.

There is a link between transfats and cardiovascular disease. And I'll bet you, that link disappears with the naturally occuring type of transfat, which is in beef for instance. It's the "engineered" type of transfats that have never existed in the human diet before that are likely the problem.

OK, time for a "build a clock" discussion....

When I was a kid, I encountered a math problem that said: "There are 17 pairs of black socks in a sock drawer and 19 pairs of white socks. Unfortunately, cthulhu has to get ready for school before dawn and must draw socks randomly from the sock drawer to get ready. What is the minimum number of socks he must take from the drawer to ensure he has a matching pair to wear to school?"

The answer, of course, is three -- the first sock could be white or black; the second sock could be the other; but the third sock is bound to match one of the prior two.

Brilliant!!! I could standardize my socks and underwear and never have to worry about anything matching.....but what about dye lots over the years? How would I know that my black socks would always match my other black socks?

So, what I did was -- I bought a metric fuckton of identical black socks; identical khaki socks; and identical underwear.....a little over 30 years ago. Yes, I've got socks older than many of the commenters here. But no individual piece of clothing gets used all that much, so they mostly appear new. Every so often, some misadventure happens and I discard a few [my favorite were some black socks that fell behind the couch near an electric baseboard heater and were subject to selective chromatography...].

There may come a time when my undies are subjected to issues that cause them to be discarded more frequently than they have been over the last 30 years....but, until that time, I'm probably good for another couple of decades.

It does, actually. It's kinda funny. Wearing a tie really does mean you get treated differently. When I wear a tie, people tend to call me "sir". When I don't, they don't. It's interesting to notice these things.

481 As to the laundry discussion.

Summer wear, here. IF working, a bland-ish, brightly colored sport fishing shirt, usually a solid color.

Khaki shorts, commando.

Carbon-fiber toed Sketchers, w/ white ankle socks.

If not working, shift to OMG loud Hawaiian shirt, Sebago boat shoes, and WTF are "socks"?

Winter time. Pretty much the same, but cargo pants, boxers, high-top socks and the Sketchers the day long.

Now, that's not the same as dressing to the nines.

There was a wonky sci-fi story where it was posited that many of the objects that surround us are actually co-adapted beings living out their own life cycles. So, when you found that you'd brought home a bunch of paperclips from the office but couldn't find any -- but found you had an excess of ballpoint pens -- it was because the paperclips had pupated into pens during the night. And everyone knows that you always end up with more hangers going back to the drycleaner than garments you had cleaned....because the pens would subsequently morph into hangers later.

Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at September 17, 2016 02:32 AM (HD4sJ)

527 Standard month-to-month fees post-expiration. Cancel anytime.

However, most providers have given up on old style cell phone contracts these days. Instead, you buy the phone for full cost spread out over two years, no cancelations fees, and if you cancel, then any remaining monthly payments on the phone are due in full.

Posted by: Walter Freeman at September 17, 2016 02:32 AM (21hN3)

528 With most cell companies, you go to a month-to-month plan that is similar to what you paid under contract but without the payments for the actual phone anymore. The "free phone" thing is pretty much history. Now, the cost of the phone is just broken up into 24 (or 30) payments which are part of the bill. When the phone is paid off, those payments cease, but your plan continues until you end it.

550 If you buy the phone upfront, then you won't have any obligation to the carrier. Just be sure you purchase an "unlocked" phone that can be transferred to any carrier. Some phones are restricted to one or two carriers based on SIM card limitations or radio frequency bands.

556 chemjeff, if you're buying a Sprint phone, it will be CDMA, which means it basically won't work outside the United States. Same is true for Verizon phones. If you need something more "universal", you need a GSM phone. ATT and T-Mobile use GSM in the US.

But maybe that's not a deal-breaker for you.

Yesterday, at Best Buy, I looked at unlocked phones and plans.

Buying an unlocked phone saves about $20 per month, possibly more. This pays for a $240 phone in 1 year.

The problem I saw was that, of the 15 or so models available, only 4 would work with Spring or Verizon, and at least 2 of them were $650+. The remainder worked with AT&T.

I'm not buying a phone for $650, when the same one will cost $250 or less in 2 years.

Point: Check all of the plans and phones at Fry's and Best Buy before changing plans.

564 @552: "how do I know if the phone is "unlocked" or not?"

You mentioned Sprint. They're a CDMA provider along with Verizon. AT&T and T-Molbile are GSM providers.

Google around and there are plenty of articles explaining the difference better than I can here in fewer words. Just make sure you look for recent articles with up-to-date info.

Sprint sells some phones that will work on both CDMA and GSM networks. Some phones might be CDMA only. Ask the salesperson. Even college kids working in malls these days will know which is which.

Ideally, you'll want a universal phone, not only 'cause it gives you the freedom to switch, but they're marginally more valuable during resale.

Posted by: deplorable cthulhu at September 17, 2016 03:04 AM (EzgxV)

573 Not to make matters more confusing, but most locked phones can be unlocked after a few months of service, or if you make enough noise with customer service. IIRC, some states have laws requiring providers to unlock by request with no time limits or fees.

Posted by: Walter Freeman at September 17, 2016 03:04 AM (21hN3)

574 Chem, do you know which phone company you're going with?

Look for a used phone / repair shop nearby. Around here it's called CPR (cell phone repair).
Tell them "I need a T-Mobile compatible phone." You can get a fully refurbished phone for 1/2 Price or better.
Then take the phone to the store & let them sync your contact list & whatever else from your old phone to the new one. Just make sure you have your old phone/SIM card.

Then, hit amazon for replacement batteries. Anker has been great for me on my Note 4. Cheap, 2 batteries + a wall charger (no cord), and I have 3 batteries - never worry about charging.

Yes, but GSM uses different frequency bands in different countries, and not all GSM phones are compatible with all frequencies. Hell, AT&T and T-Mobile have differing bands that sometimes cause compatibility issues here in US. Again, it depends on the specific phone.

639 G'night rich.
Catwrangler is a newish name to me, but I think probably a longtimer - thank you for picking up my slack lately.

Pookysgirl,
You're on a non-apple, right?
Simply touch & hold for a second on any word in any post. Do you see two blue "teardrops" that you can then drag around to make a "quote?"
If so, an option should pop up to cut, copy, etc.
Copy (it's now on your clipboard) then paste into you new post.

For a url, same thing. Touch the header, i highlights. Then touch/hold & you should get the option to copy, which you can then paste. For instance, if you wanted to link what I'd arguably the prettiest song in history, do this:

Sure the elected FDR to 4 damn terms and he destroyed the country. No wonder the MFM thought they were great.
