So, every time they tell us what Zika is, how it behaves/is transmitted...it does something different. Unnerving that this is all happening pretty much below the surface - getting overshadowed by the election and the latest 'summer of the shark1' news stories.
"Although it is not certain that these types of close contact were the source of transmission, family contacts should be aware that blood and body fluids of severely ill patients might be infectious," the CDC said. First, only transmitted by certain types of mosquitoes. Next, well maybe sexually transmitted. Now, maybe hugging and other close contact. And I've lost track of how Zika affects a person who has it - not just pregnant women, but adults --- can be similar to Lyme disease in causing neurological issues (?). Yikes. It's a laudable choice, I gave up my career to be "mom" to my son and fortify my wife's grabbing for a military pension. We have two generations of women now raised to believe making the choice I did is a sign of being a traitor to their gender. I am kind of past caring about the window dressing of ideological purity being worth keeping us out of executive power. We need to change the culture it is easier to do that when your party is the one cutting the checks in the executive branch. Posted by: sven10077 at September 14, 2016 08:46 AM (SzZnW) 186
One way to pay for some of the maternity leave stuff (though not a campaign point, since everyone loves their entitlements) ... is to cut out some of the pension and social security sharing, and move it toward parents that raise kids well.
If two 64 year olds get married, one with a school pension, one, say, with military benefits ... they each get a large portion of the others benefits if the spouse dies. The idea of that setup was to take care of the mom after he dies at 69, since she raised kids while dad had the career. But now a marriage of financial convenience can transfer a million or much more to a spouse that never had any kids. Enabling/encouraging the middle class to afford kids, and even rewarding for caring for them well, is a GREAT idea to advance, essential to a nation's survival. The European method of (uneeded) growth has been to import a new hostile people, which indeed will change demographics and be the same outcome as a military defeat. America has enough people, we need to now take the kids back from an abusive kidnapper government. Teach "Dick Jane Sally with a working Dad and Mom at home" as the paragon of family. After high school kids can face the college Marxists head on, if we can't manage to infiltrate academia. But the left is now raising the kids, to turn in their parents for conservative thought crimes. Posted by: illiniwek at September 14, 2016 08:47 AM (ZRaCn) 187

When I had my first baby, I left work a few days before giving birth, they hired someone else to take my place and I was out of a job. This was within the educational system, so it wasn't like I worked in a 7-11. I knew going in that if I had a baby, I was out. Had the baby anyway. Stayed home till the baby was in first grade. No one supplemented us. We just did without. People don't want to do that anymore. They'll warehouse their kid for a double paycheck.

Posted by: Anon a mouse... at September 14, 2016 08:44 AM (C9pBZ) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Or, and I'm just spitballing here, it's not that people don't want to keep a spouse at home, it's that they CAN'T keep a spouse at home. Living in an area that has jobs paying well enough for a single income to support a family requires paying rent/mortgages commensurate with living in an area that has jobs paying well enough for a single income to support a family. That requires a second income. Period, full stop. We can argue about WHY this is true, but that doesn't change the fact that it IS true. This idea that I'm a bad parent because we both work infuriates me beyond words (and I'm GOOD with words). The entire concept that I'm 'warehousing' my kid in order to buy myself nice stuff is bizarre, false, and incredibly insulting. With the exception of my kick-ass tv that I just bought as my housewarming present to me, the last time I bought myself ANYTHING nice was three years ago when I got new goalie equipment. The tv it replaced was more than 10 years old. I don't want to hear 'iStuff' from anyone. Since we found out Kid One was on the way, we simply stopped spending extra money. I imagine nearly every parent does that. The money goes to your kids. Trivial stuff like feeding, clothing and housing them. The missus and I DO go without. We DO deny ourselves things we'd enjoy so that we can give our kids the things they need/would enjoy. I never thought I'd say this, but fuck grammie winger and her pretentious condescension. Amen to that ... even for the Moms that didn't have such options. The stay at home by choice Moms almost get condemned these days, but the mothers that do such have very rich life, from my observation. In my family's previous generation, it was my grandmother that made a home that even the gruffest uncles remember fondly, with singing by the piano and refinements to a rugged farm life. Too bad culture and "feminism" thinks government should raise the child, and they put financial strain on middle class families, encouraging a sprawling welfare class and massive foreign migration to generate the kids. For generations, our "new society" has been pushing less kids, smaller families, double-income families, and abortions like a drive-through cafe. The economy adjusted to this. It was very different years ago when companies, like IBM for example, catered to families by giving great family health care and pay that could keep a middle income family with the mom at home to raise the kids. Gone are those days. Compromise is not the same thing as 40 years ago. Posted by: artisanal 'ette at September 14, 2016 09:10 AM (qCMvj) 250
We can rail against Trump's maternity policy when he tries to enact it. (of course in the meantime, we can bitch about it).
The NHS is, presumably, funded by the taxpayers of Britain. I'll further presume that fat people and smokers are not exempt from those same taxes. Yet smokers and fat people are being denied their access to the same level of 'universal' healthcare there. In the US, you are now mandated by law to buy health insurance. Furthermore, insurance companies are allowed, nay encouraged by OCare to charge smokers a much higher insurance rate than for non-smokers. so true ... same with blacks. Jackson spoke adoringly of him, he hired a woman to manage a big building project in the early 90's, and women that work for him love him just fine. Megyn blood out of her eyes or whatever ... Megyn turned it into FACT that he meant menstrual, which on hearing he said was gross. Carly was on with Megyn to confirm he must have meant that. Carly ... "look at that face" was in private to his guys watching her in debate ... he didn't say she was ugly, but her "countenance, which made sense, and others said the same. But the whole world heard 1000 times he had called her ugly. She even tried to smile more, and made it a meme, because Trump was right. The two women Megyn used in the debate attack, were Rosie and the "on your knees" comment was a woman on a scripted show that gets ratings with such salacious scripted stuff, and the woman loves Trump and laughed it off. And even Rosie hates Clinton and said it is fixed, and we'll be lucky if we get Trump instead. Then Megyn gave two hours to lament poor Michelle Fields, that pursued Trump after his presser into the non-reporter area, got through the SS who warned her, grabbed Trump's arm, and was finally pulled back, and conveniently had her friend/witness guy to "report" that she was beaten and raped by Trump and Cory (slight exaggeration, but it got that much coverage). Eh.
The maternity leave thing is a result of years and years and years of Democrat politicians staying on message. Look at gov't run "healthcare". That's a been a socialist/Democrat dream since the 40's and they stayed on message for decades. Even when it didn't make any sense at all as circumstances had drastically changed since the 40's. The Democrats stayed on message year after year after year. And voila! We got gov't run healthcare. We have leaders in the conservative movement and GOP, who don't believe a single word they say. They're just weaseling around for a favorable outcome in their upcoming election (Hello! Turtle and Eddie Munster!). We abandon the culture and have an incoherent and cowardly message from our "Leadership", and then wonder why people won't follow us. So, yep, Trump has to co-op some of the Dims' proposals to win. Not a surprise. What we'll have to see is if he can leverage those positions into to support for his other positions to move the country forward and to a better place. He's stirring the pot and hopefully will break up the Theater of Pantomime Politics that Washington has become. We'll see. then how do you afford the extra food, clothes, school stuff, etc? Honestly it's stressful, and sometimes I wish it were easier, but: Well, right now my kids aren't in school (2 and 8 months). But my wife and I do without. We drive maintained, but older paid off cars. Our only debt is the mortgage (and when we bought the house we were very clear that it had to be do-able on only my income, just in case). Our cell phones are 4 or 5 years old. We buy beef as a 1/4 cow from a local farmer once every 8 months or so (saves a LOT of money in the long run) etc etc... Posted by: GMan at September 14, 2016 09:40 AM (sxq57) 350

I went to a MSNBC (yuk!) article to get some facts on the FAB's child care proposals. Let's see, boost in pay for child care workers, universal pre-K for all 4 year olds, a 'home visit' program for low income families, and
Clinton also intends to cap family expenses for child care at 10% of annual income. When costs exceed this limit, Clinton "would use a combination of subsidized child care and tax credits." As to maternity leave, back in 2015 she said: Hillary Clinton has debuted a campaign video vowing to fight for mandated paid maternity leave. "It's outrageous that America is the only country in the developed world that doesn't guarantee paid leave," she said. Daily Caller, 2015 So Trump's position is hardly worse, but yeah it sucks imho. I don't have a problem with the maternity proposal, anything that would incentivize indigenous Americans to have more children instead of aborting them or not having them over importing millions of people from third world shitholes as their replacements is a good thing.

My intent was to convey my frustration over parents who don't consider the possibility that there IS a viable option for one parent to stay home when the kids are young, rather than defaulting to what seems to be the societal norm of both parents working and utilizing daycare to do so. My intent was to voice my concern for probably the second generation now of kids who have grown up primarily not at home during their waking hours. I meant no disrespect to those who have made other choices, or for those who have HAD no choice. I should have worded my point very differently. It really does come across as condescending.
