Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Red Grooms studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and with Hans Hofmann. He has become one of the most versatile artists of the twentieth century. Working as a painter, sculptor, installation artist, draughtsman, performance artist, and filmmaker, Grooms consistently infuses his work with a whimsical sense of humor. Often focusing on scenes from daily life, he approaches his subject through a lens of caricature and exaggeration, lending a cartoon-like quality to everyday incident. Grooms' sculptural tableaux of the 1970s and 1980s and his life-sized environmental installations, such as the 1976 "Ruckus Manhattan," delighted viewers with its re-creation of city scenes crammed with human incident and amusing detail in a colorful and playfully naïve style. I can see why academics would like it: all sorts of not-so-subtle cultural clues to identify and socioepolitical puzzles to unravel, but not my cup of tea. This is unacceptable to say? Protest all you want and use social media all you want. However, during the nearly two minutes when that song is playing, I believe everyone should put their hands on their heart and be proud of our country for we are all truly blessed. Recent history has shown that it is a place where anyone no matter what race or gender has the potential to become President of the United States. We live in the most special place in the world and should be thankful. After the song is over, I would encourage everyone to please use the podium they have, stand up for their beliefs, and make America a better place. The rebuilding of battery park and the freedom tower demonstrates that amazing things can be done in this country when we work together towards a common goal. It is a shame how quickly we have forgotten this as a society. Today we are more divided then ever before. I could never imagine multiple people sitting down during the national anthem on the September 11th anniversary. The lessons of 911 should teach us that if we come together, the world can be a better and more peaceful place #neverforget." Posted by: Lizzy at September 13, 2016 09:59 AM (NOIQH) 53

"No conflict of interest exists in our partnership with Peace Corps and the US government. Dr. Vanessa Kerry is primarily employed by and paid through Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kerry receives no financial compensation from the Peace Corps or US government." Sounds perfectly legit, doesn't it. What they don't tell you is that Dr. Kerry's foundation Seed receives millions from the US government (and doesn't have to compete with other, non-connected groups for the dough), and that Seed pays Kerry a $140,000 salary (and that's on top of whatever she's pulling down for her actual work at Mass General). Cover artist Charles Mikolaycak was most active in the early- to mid-70's and early 80's. He did the cover for several of Andre Norton's science fiction novels. Look up theNorton novel'Forerunner Foray' as a good example of his work. He mainly worked in colored pencil and watercolors but did other media, as well. I bring him up because few people know about or remember Mikolaycak, but I consider him one of the best book illustrators of the 20th Century, and think he should be remembered. I like how you can see the underpinnings of the realist work on which the caricature is hung.
I truly wish I understood what any of that meant. She's saying that the characters are cartoonish, but the buildings and the arch are done realistically. This shows that the artist can actually draw but is choosing to also cartoon. Posted by: troyriser --------- In a nutshell, art should answer questions about life, not ask them. If one comes away from a piece of 'art' in confusion, then it isn't art at all, it's just the fevered imaginations of the 'artist', if not flimflam. It is one thing to admire skills, it is another to admire content. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at September 13, 2016 10:22 AM (9mTYi) 148

Analysis: twoo. But it's the government's education system that brings that about. We used to say that they teach poetry in high school to make sure you don't get to liking it too much. I mean, look what sex education has done for us. Should you ever want to understand just why poetry, once as big as the novel, is now a stone-dead and abandoned art form, just spend a little time around a govt-univ Creative Writing program. I spent quite a little, and I got that understanding. Still haz a li'l bit of a sadd, but I guess the Twooth is worth it. Posted by: Stringer Davis at September 13, 2016 10:29 AM (tIja6) 183

Here's a writeup about the painting:
""Chance Encounter at 3 A.M." exemplifies the artist's distinctive style in its witty observations and quirky interpretations of well-known people and places. The picture attempts to re-create the initial meeting of two great modern artists, Willem de Kooning (seated on the right) and Mark Rothko (at the left). The idea for the picture was suggested by an article on de Kooning that Grooms read in the New York Times Magazine (November 20, 1983). As recounted in the article, the two paint-splattered artists happened to sit on the same bench in Washington Square Park in New York's Greenwich Village early one morning. Although both of them had studios in the area and already knew each other's work, they had never met face to face before. While the actual meeting took place in the 1930s, Grooms mistakenly thought it had occurred in the 1950s, hence his inclusion of such period details as the large, rounded cars and newspaper headlines about the Korean War, President Eisenhower, and Nikita Khrushchev. Grooms imagines Rothko and de Kooning eyeing each other furtively, moments before introducing themselves. A less-than-ethereal muse, elegantly clothed in a green cocktail dress and pearls, hovers overhead holding an artist's palette and brushes. As in many of his works, Grooms dramatically condensed the space, moving the statue of the Italian hero of independence Garibaldi closer to the pair than it would be in reality. By including Garibaldi and the words of George Washington on the arch, Grooms may be drawing an analogy between historical leaders who fought for political independence and the two leaders of the then-avant-garde Abstract Expressionist movement who were pursing a new artistic path." Specialization is for insects, indeed. That also goes for specialization within a subset of learning. See? You're so smart. Pretty much every human activity can be subject to interesting inquiry. There was a HAM radio thread recently in which the HAM nerds blathered at each other in words that I didn't understand, but it was fascinating. I used to hang out on fly fishing boards where you wouldn't understand the conversation. I love music, but when I hear musicians talk about how they make it I don't understand a word. Heck, my own son is a good guitarist but I don't know what he means when he says "drop D tuning". The more you try to understand stuff -- and art is important and one of the primary means of expressing humanity -- the more you approach understanding humanity. I find it weird, appalling even, that nobody in the Democratic Party, the MFM or the Clinton crime family is showing any actual concern for Hillary's well-being, not one iota. If my wife collapsed like the Beast did on Sunday I would be going mildly crazy with concern about her health. Next in order I would want to protect her dignity if possible. Well nobody in her supporters or her media Praetorian guard seems to give a single solitary hot damn about her health and throwing her into the back of a van like a sack of Idaho potatoes shows zero concern about her dignity. All they are concerned about is getting this piece of flesh elected and protecting her from embarrassing questions. I find that appalling on the part of her enablers and handlers. A couple polls proving her support dropping to such a level that it would be an electoral blowout and the dnc will drive the skiv directly into Hillary's ribs. That's what the next couple days of 'rest' are all about, to watch polls.
When it becomes clear she's toast she'll give some impassioned speech about doing it for the country ala 'win one for the Gipper' to fire up the base. So, I'd prefer the polls slowly dripped south. The Dems remember that "bitter clingers" didn't cost their guy one bit. They think the same will happen again. But will it.
======= Mitt Rombly--and none of the rest of the GOP--ever came to the defense of those attacked, though. Trump did so immediately. I think that's why they're doubling down--they can't believe it didn't work and believe that the fault is lack of intensity. Not that the only reason it has worked before is due to there being ZERO push back from the Republicans. And that gets me to a huge complaint I have about the GOP: When someone criticizes or offends one of the groups that make up the Dems coalition, you have multiple Dems out defending them. OTOH: You never hear of a GOP standing up for their voters. Posted by: RoyalOil at September 13, 2016 11:13 AM (e2Rx3) 398

I believe so. You know, I started to ask myself how much of this is political and how much is real? The answer seems it is more real than political. She has nurses filling her doing quick neurological checks. Anti seizure medication and those glasses are a dead giveaway. My guess is that also has a lot to do with her not appearing in public and being very closely stage managed. It's not just her penchant for gaffes or sitting on a lead. It's a degenerative physical condition. And make no mistake democrats know it. There is a picture of Schumer standing there while the nurse is performing one of the tests. They just figure they can ride her broken down drugged body through the election and use her as another subterfuge. It's really a act of disgusting cunning and treason. So, I went to a medical call this morning for an 81-year-old male with Alzheimers who was found lying on the floor with a bump and abrasion on his head. My fellow EMTs tried in vain to talk to him and give directions. He would not respond when they called him by name. I looked at his arm and saw he had a USMC tattoo on his arm. I asked them to let me try to get him to respond. In my boot camp voice, I said "Marine, you need to look at me." He looked at me. "Marine, I need to hold your arm out." He held his arm out. "Marine, I need you to sit up." He sat up. We connected. It seems Parris Island training is a hell of lot stronger than Alzheimers. Semper Fi.
