Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Glenn Reynolds: If You Like the Idea of Checks and Balances and Rule of Law, You Must Vote TrumpAn argument I've been making for some time, though I don't think I can take credit for it. I think I got it from somewhere else, too. Good column making the argument well. He quotes this piece noting that Hillary Clinton, almost immediately corrupted the State Department upon entering it.Forget the new dump of Hillary Clinton emails. Forget the phony claims that the missing communications were all about wedding plans and yoga routines. Forget, too, the many requests from Doug Band in which the Clinton Foundation honcho hoped his quos (hefty donations to the Clinton Foundation) would translate into quids (e.g., special access to the secretary). Forget them all. The most disturbing aspect about the FBI dump may not be fresh evidence of another Clinton lie. The most disturbing thing about Mrs. Clinton’s continuing email drama may be where she’s telling the truth. Or at least a half-truth. Mrs. Clinton told the FBI it was “common knowledge” at State that she used private email. Agents further quote her as saying she “could not recall anyone raising concerns with her regarding the sensitivity of the information she received at her email address.” However unseemly the cashing in of the Clinton family, whatever the trampling of the ethics accord the Clinton Foundation had signed with the White House, even apart from the walking conflicts-of-interests that were Huma Abedin and Cheryl Mills, the much larger stink here is this: Mrs. Clinton was allowed to spend her four years as secretary of state off the grid. It isn’t so much that Mrs. Clinton set up a personal server so she would not be accountable the way normal political appointees are held accountable. It’s that no one in government stopped her. The inspector general’s report notes that when two IT officers expressed their concern in 2010 that her private email system meant federal records were not being preserved, they were told “never to speak of the Secretary’s personal email system again.”She has now corrupted the FBI into becoming her own personal Law Enforcement Division. She did that as a candidate, not as an actual president. What can this crime boss do when she has real power, not just the Foundation's billion dollar slush fund? Reynolds writes: And the FBI and Department of Justice have seemed curiously uninterested in going after people for behavior that, in other circumstances, would be a surefire ticket to federal prison. The reason, of course, is that the civil service, though supposedly professional and nonpartisan, has become a Democratic Party monoculture. Federal employees overwhelmingly vote for Democrats, donate to Democrats, and, by all appearances, cover for Democrats as a routine part of doing their job. When Richard Nixon tried to weaponize the IRS, top officials at the Service made a stink. Under Obama, the IRS weaponized itself. And, of course, the press is in the tank for the Democrats as usual. Bad news about Obama and Clinton has been soft-pedaled, with reporters sometimes admitting that they don’t want to help Trump. So if the choice in 2016 is between one bad candidate and another (and it is) the question is, which one will do the least harm. And, judging by the civil service’s behavior, that’s got to be Trump. If Trump tries to target his enemies with the IRS, you can bet that he’ll get a lot of pushback — and the press, instead of explaining it away, will make a huge stink. If Trump engages in influence-peddling, or abuses secrecy laws, you can bet that, even if Trump’s appointees sit atop the DOJ or FBI, the civil service will ensure that things don’t get swept under the rug. And if Trump wants to go to war, he’ll get far more scrutiny than Hillary will get — or, in cases like her disastrous Libya invasion, has gotten.Plus, of course, the press will be against him. Right now the press is covering up for Hillary-- the Washington Post is now campaigning to just drop this whole obstruction-of-justice piffle. Five of the last six popular presidential votes went to Democrats. Bush lost the popular vote in 2000 but got in by a hair. When that stat changes to "six of the last seven" and "seven of the last eight," what do you think the federal bureaucracy will do? They already are almost all liberal government-happy Democrats. Now they'll know that Republicans will barely ever win the Executive, and that the way to guarantee job security is to do... little favors for the Democrats whenever possible. The #NeverTrumpers -- who are really Hillary supporters; they want Hillary to win, because they think then they can purge the Trumpkins and start winning elections as a party drawing the support of 25% of the country -- seem to think elections are just about intraparty jockeying, palace intrigues, and "principle." They seem to not notice elections are actually about forming a government and staffing it with actual people, people the president chooses, and then directing (and hopefully restraining) a sprawling bureaucracy that not only can destroy you, but increasingly desires too. But I guess the important thing is being able to write pungent, emotional opinion pieces for NR. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

It's Peggy Noonan's Protected vs. Unprotected (I think that's it) thingy. We The Plebes live with the various agencies, those who implement them do not. Let's take the Gold King Mine disaster. Do you think any of the people who work for the EPA and who were involved in poisoning the river will have their lives impacted in the least little way by this? Nope. But heaven forfend you build a watering hole on your own land and don't get EPA approval and you're facing a fine in the amount of tens of thousands a day with no appeal. You know what? Fuck it. Bring back the spoils system for civil service positions. At least that honest graft. So want in on it. So do. If Hillary does indeed have Vascular Dementia diagnosed in 2013, and only has 12-18 months to live, I can see why it would be worthless to prosecute somebody in this condition. She is really fucked up. What is worse is the people covering for her, smearing Trump who is not dying, and voting for the Left to seize power for good.
It also makes sense why the FBI is dumping everything out about her crimes for the public to be the judge about the Clintons and their crimes. Knowing this I have to give Coney and the FBI credit. It is the media's job and duty and the citizens duty to be vigilant in educating themselves. You would not prosecute anybody with severe Vascular Dementia. They are going to die anyways and they are not competent to stand trial. And yes with Trump comes the benefits of strong Checks and balances and the Rule of Law. #NeverTrumpers are worse than the Totalitarians whom they pretend to fight. So far the FBI has enabled law breaking. The next step for the agency is actively building cases for trumped-up charges against the Uniparty's political opponents.
Look at actions of law enforcement in Wisconsin, "John Doe" cases, for a preview. Come to think of it, the way the FBI tormented Richard Jewell for supposedly bombing the '96 Atlanta Olympics is instructive as well. While they hounded an innocent man, who was a suspect mainly for being fat and living with his mother, the real perpetrator went on to commit more bombings. Malicious incompetence. For her detractors, minor transgressions shall be turned into major crimes and prosecuted. She will have the IRS and every regulatory body doing anal exams of anybody that looks at her the wrong way walking down the hallway. It won't start with the rich and powerful that can fight it and would attract attention. It will start with the little people, like was done to the Tea Party.

"...the much larger stink here is this: Mrs. Clinton was allowed to spend her four years as secretary of state off the grid."
There's so much stink emanating from Team Clinton, poultry farms and pigsties are looking around saying, "What the hell is that godforsaken odor?" Reynolds is right but not right enough. I understand his point, but I think it's a little counterproductive to always diminish all the other stuff leading up to the final thing that he wants to talk about. Don't say, "Well, problems A through Y are bad, but let's really focus on Z." No, let's focus on all A through Z every time. I'll call it the Sean Hannity Approach. Never exclude that which has been stinking all along and merely emphasize that which stinks most now. That provides an opportunity for those looking for an exit argument to ignore everything that preceded the latest in a continuing, building factual narrative of corruption. Yes, it gets redundant. That's exactly the point. Do not allow opponents the chance to bury the older stuff and just focus on "debunking" the latest. The Clintons do this all. the. time. It's delay and stonewall until they can announce, "Oh, that's old news. Everyone has moved on." That's what they want to do again. Make everything "old news". No. Do not make everything preceding older, lesser news. Keep it fresh all the time. ALL of this is part of a perpetual and continuing package of corruption, each development a new bow adorning the same packaged shit the country has had to embrace for years. I agree with almost everything from both Reynolds and Ace on the subject, except the above from Reynolds. Lois Learner stonewalled the investigation and Obama's DOJ made sure she was protected from any serious consequences for her stonewalling. But, the criminality of the IRS came from the top: Obama. This. In the short term true reform could only be imposed at gunpoint, and it would therefore not be lasting. What would be needed is a long term project to renew the American character. Even that will require some extraordinary measures to pull off. So yeah, no hope in human measures here. Which is not to say no hope at all, but many folks don't want to hear the real alternatives. I have to admit to being surprised that anyone believes in either Rule of Law, OR Checks and Balances. Government has gotten so big and so intrusive that it is impossible (I think) to believe that power is being applied by any combination of any of the branches of government.
Individual agencies now implement laws via regulation and congress is powerless to even reign it in, let alone stop it. The billions just recently presented to Iran on behalf of all of us by Obama, was evidently done with no congressional knowledge, let alone oversight or authorization. I suppose it's nice for some to pretend that what we've been taught is our form of government is indeed our form of government, but it's not. Not even close. "And this too. What the hell? Does he have to virtue signal here?" Agreed that this is a cute position to take. Trump has been running better than we could have expected from (nearly) all of the 17 candidates. This will become clear from now until November. When elected, I think he'll be at least pretty good and may surprise to the upside. President > supreme court justice > senator > cabinet member He obviously won't get President, if Trump wants to nominate him to justice (great - assuming he can get confirmed). Schumer is making no secret that he’s preparing to do what’s necessary to make sure the Supreme Court tilts to the left next year.”My number one goal, should I become majority leader with your help, is to get a progressive Supreme Court,” the New York Democrat told a policy conference hosted by Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network Wednesday morning.”A progressive majority on the Supreme Court is an imperative, and if I become majority leader, I will make it happen,” Schumer said. “I will make it happen.” Posted by: Bertram Cabot Jr. at September 09, 2016 04:17 PM (IqV8l) 233

The checks and balances argument is the best one I've heard yet for voting for either Hillary or The Donald. But it's not good enough.
And before anyone starts slamming me for wanting to elect Hillary, let me note I live in Illinois. It doesn't matter who I vote for, Hillary will carry the state. So I'm going to vote for the only one running who believes in smaller government, Gary Johnson. He had me at zero-based budgeting, implementing the Fair Tax, and reforming social security. Oh, and I don't believe Trump will pick judges from that list he waved around. He'll pick judges like the ones that voted in favor of Kelo. You know, justices like Stevens, Kennedy, Souter, Ginsburg & Breyer. Who knows, maybe if enough people vote for him, and Trump loses, then maybe the Republicans will reach out and try to pick up the small government types? And if not, then maybe the Republicans go into the trash heap of history. Which at this point doesn't seem like such a bad thing. Honestly Ace, your argument might convince me if I were living in a battleground state. But my vote won't change the course of this election, so I have to try going for the longer-term play. I know this is sort of OT, but since Ace saw fit to mention it, I will see fit to correct it. In the 2000 election Bush did win the popular vote. It was close, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. And you can bet your ass that had the reverse occurred, the Commiecrats would have been screaming WE WON from now until the cows come home.
What most people do not know is that following that election, the state of Florida had every media outlet known to man, plus every civil rights group, public and private, descend upon it like a plague of locusts. And they went over those ballots with a fine tooth comb. After this was done, you heard...nothing. Why? Because what they discovered was that when you counted the LEGAL ballots, those with no "hanging chads" or otherwise corrupted, Bush won by a few hundred votes. Now, if you counted the legal ballots, plus the ILLEGAL ones, ones where some idiot punched multiple holes in them, or what have you, then Gore won by a few hundred votes. But there's the rub, they were ILLEGAL ballots, they DID NOT COUNT, so said the Florida Secretary of State, and the Supreme Court agreed with her, by an 8 to 1 vote (something else you don't hear much about, surprise, surprise). And that is why Bush DID win the popular vote in 2000, albeit by a Charlie Hotel. Posted by: The Oort Cloud - Source of all SMODs at September 09, 2016 04:23 PM (2pIEi) 273

The idea of a government full of Trump yesmen is supposed to make vote for him?
When the debate about ObamaCare comes through in 2017 do you want united Republicans against super unpopular Hillary or do you want Donald "Government can't let people die in the streets" Trump saying low interest rates means it's a great time for spending to add more to the national debt? And I am rather sure Republicans would fight Hillary on illegal immigrant amnesty but I have zero confidence Trump won't decide to legalize millions once he realizes the press would then say good things about him. After all the most important thing to Trump is good things being said about Trump. And once the illegals are legal they will demand and get citizenship (and bakers will have to bake them cakes) then we get to Democrats winning ten of the last twelve elections, fifteen of the last seventeen elections, twenty of the last twenty-two elections.... Ace keeps saying #NeverTrumpers want Hillary to win. Speaking for myself, I don't want Hillary to win but I see a better 2020 election with that than after 4 years of Trump trashing the brand even more than Dubya did. The worst that Trump could do equates to the best we could expect Hillary to do if elected.
Unless of course your concern is that he might damage the already toxic Republican brand. That does seem rather of less concern when we have a candidate formally running on the platform that laws do not bind her. Posted by: 18-1 at September 09, 2016 04:32 PM (X7E8f) This is pretty close to it for me - I think the GOP was close to toxic before hand and now it is toxic because of Trump. The GOP had and still has problems pulling in people outside the base. Trump won't fix that - he brings in some people who don't typically vote GOP but he's absolutely despised by more winnable people. And Trump has caused a rift in the base itself. And no matter if he wins or loses that rift is likely to widen. If he loses then NeverTrump will be blamed. If he wins he'll define "conservatism" and no one will want to touch it for a long time. Before 2016 I had only a very small hope that the political process would seriously address any of the issues that are important to me and now there's zero chance of that no matter who wins. No argument on the accountability issue. The short version I hear from Aces argument about #NeverTrump: "Principled conservatives. There are not enough of you to ever win. Best you can hope for is to cling to the coattails of the Trump mob." I don't buy that an actual conservative couldnt win this year. Hillary could have been beat by just about anyone. It's not even impossible for Trump to beat her, just far less likely. But here we are with no conservative to vote for except third party. I can chose between the unprincipled narcissist who has had time in Gov to show how corrupt she is or the unprincipled narcissist who hasn't had time in gov to show how corrupt he will be. True the press will be against him and FBI might learn they are the Federal Bureau which Investigates crime again. So the marching orders to conservatives is "vote for the person who is very much ike the other person but not yet a criminal and who will be checked and balanced." That's like " Brain cancer hurts less than bone cancer... we think" How about this. I'll vote for someone I can stomach supporting. If the world burns because of my vote let that be a lesson to the people who support bone cancer or brain cancer. I have a concious. It won't let me vote for Hillary or Trump. purge leftist operatives (doj lawyers in particular), starve the beast (flat tax?), constitutionalism: it really strikes to the heart of the framers' intent, to construct a limited government. they were all aware of the dangers of an all-powerful federal govt. obama's multifaceted push has been to erode local and state jurisdictions and rights. there must be a push against the federal regulatory incursions on state sovereignty. this is an important move.

Republicans are idiots. yeah, we all knew that, but listen - they always, ALWAYS chase the wrong rabbit. Setting up a private server was a corrupt act in and of itself. Whether confidential information was sent over it, whether it was hacked, is entirely irrelevant. The only purpose to not using free federal servers that are secure to avoid record-keeping. The existence of the system itself is ample evidence of corruption. Setting up the Clinton Foundation is a corrupt act in and of itself. Why couldn't Bill work for an existing charity, any number of which would be thrilled to have an ex-president on their board? The only possible reason to set up a separate charity (with your name on it) is to facilitate corruption. Posted by: George Orwell's Ghost at September 09, 2016 04:52 PM (VPvxh) 463

Ace's point (and mine) isn't so much that you have to vote for Trump but if your only criticisms are for Trump but ignore Hillary Clinton's obvious corrupt and felonious behavior, that doesn't say much for the integrity and motiviation of #NeverTrumpers. Vote for whomever you want to. I really don't give a flying fvkc. What is interesting to me is that people that originally weren't for Trump (like me) can give cogent reasons why they have changed their minds and will now vote for Trump. The #NeverTrumpers, on the other hand, seem to rapidly devolve to name-calling and proclaiming that their feelz are hurt. Posted by: Retired Buckeye Cop is now an engineer at September 09, 2016 04:45 PM (5Yee7) Name calling? Most of the name calling I've seen is from either LoveTrump or NeverHillary. OT. A federal judge this afternoon refused to order a halt to the North Dakota pipleline being built underground that crosses over Sioux reservation land, etc.
I keep getting feeds on Facebook about this, as a large protest group of Sioux Indians and other tribes have been forming for a couple of weeks on the Standing Rock reservation( Yes, not far from Wounded Knee). They are getting a lot of sympathy, especially from the SJW's and the environuts. The tribe says that the company installing the pipeline has simply bulldozed through the reservation, digging up archeological sites and burial grounds with no regard to them. So now their lawsuit they filed has been denied. However.....here comes Obama and company to the rescue. The Army Corp of Engineers stated this afternoon that they will not allow the company to bury pipeline on ground owned by the Corp until umpteen more studies have been done. This is a person who got kicked off the Senatorial (?) Watergate investigative team when she was a young attorney for unethical behavior. I don't think the Constitutional Republic will survive her if she is elected POTUS. Donald Trump is a guy with a yuuuuge ego that views business as a full-contact sport. Maybe he wants to sell influence but I don't know that for certain. I am absolutely certain Hillary Clinton will sell access to the White House and take revenge on all the people that she perceives as slighting her over the years. For me the choice is pretty simple. Do you really think Jeb Bush (the first pick by the GOPe) would be calling her "Crooked Hillary?" Node? That racist. I get into trouble on the racists threads. So back to reading about famous Greek generals from twenty-five hundred years ago. Oh, the author of the piece made the offhand remark that he didn't agree with the conclusions of another historian and ignored those conclusions to advance his own conclusions which remined me of a paragraph in "God Emperor of Dune" where the worm orders the history books burned, and the historians who wrote those books thrown into the burning pyre. (The Worm was three thousand years old at the time and was present at the historical events the historians were writing about and the worm knew what happened as the historians rewrote history.) Ok, so I was confused about the Irish goodbye and had to look it up. So if anyone wants to hash this out in the driveway, this could go on four hours. Or not, because I'm leaving. What Trump probably can do, like Governor Scott Walker did in Wisconsin, is stop the auto-deduct of union dues from fed paychecks and make the unions collect their own dues. This alone caused public employee union membership in Wisconsin to plunge something like 60%-70%. Hence TWO statewide recall elections funded by national unions against Walker. At the same time I am afraid of Trump winning because his past statements make it clear he couldn't pick the Bill of Rights out of a lineup. "I'll force the military to torture the family of terrorists" and his support for terror list gun ban. Those things should make any person worry.

First off, you referred to a tax 'credit'. You obviously know nothing of the difference between a deduction and a credit. There is a world of difference. If you drop a child, you can get a tax credit. No work involved. Follow me, so far? I can type slower if that would help. Deductions reduce taxable income. If some mom has a little bit older children and can work a couple hours every night at $15 per hour while paying a neighbor child $8 who the hell are you to decide she should pay the tax on the $15 while ignoring her $8 cost? That is a deduction. It's not going to break up families, have children abused, or any other bizzare ideas you like to formulate. It reflects her cost at securing revenue. In other words, Accounting 101. Posted by: free range 'sorta' conservative but not 'true' conservative at September 09, 2016 06:06 PM (ZFUt7) 593

I take it back. One person has done Hillary more good than the #AlwaysTrump. Trump himself has very nearly killed his chances of beating Hillary with his own big mouth. If Trump wins it will likely be weakness on Hillary's part. My guess is all her emails the Russians took from her server show up on wikileaks. I'll sit back and you can explain how this is my fault because I don't vote for people who aren't conservative. Posted by: The Sampo at September 09, 2016 06:08 PM (ArcGB) 594

Posted by: free range 'sorta' conservative but not 'true' conservative at September 09, 2016 06:06 PM (ZFUt7) Since when is a family nothing more than a business partnership? Conservatives USED to have this strange idea that maybe, kids are better off being raised in a two-parent household, and that perverse government incentives like welfare lead, intentionally or not, to more single parent families and the associated social costs. This type of proposal from Trump creates the same type of perverse incentives, in this case for parents to have someone else raise their kids. Besides, one can only imagine the degree of bureaucratic crap a daycare would have to go through in order to be considered a "qualifying" daycare for purposes of this tax deduction. And with government benefits come government strings and government rules. Who disbelieves that these "qualifying" daycares would be forced to teach the little ones some introductory SJWness in order to continue to remain eligible? Trump cannot improve the government, but he has every incentive to be a very active president. The biggest most luxurious government you ever seen.
I currently am not enamored with the government the way it is. So, the only thing he can do is move the government in the same direction as Hillary Clinton, only half a step a minute slower, perhaps, at best. At worst, because of his ability to bully and rile up the masses against those who stand in his way, he is very likely to change government far more drastically than Hillary would be able to. This is not to say I support Hillary, I support and will vote for neither, and accept the will of everyone else and the consequences that goes with it. Which will be minor. We are picking between two nearly equally unacceptable candidates for President of the United States of America. If the nation has fallen this far, I cannot find a shit to give about it. The faster it dies, probably the better. Enjoy the decline, it is all that is offered on the menu! Posted by: astonerii at September 09, 2016 07:46 PM (o/DjS) 611

RE: "The #NeverTrumpers -- who are really Hillary supporters; they want Hillary to win, because they think then they can purge the Trumpkins and start winning elections as a party drawing the support of 25% of the country. . . " Huh? What on earth? I'm a Never Trumper and when Hillary wins the election [because more people voted for her than voted for Trump] I will continue to see that the Republican party is gutted. The "Trumpkins" aren't conservatives anyway, so they'll drift wherever they happen to feel like going just as they always have done. But honestly I don't think the Republican Party will ever be a "winning" party again -- it's completely crushed into the ground though maybe it's possible for conservatives to continue to creep along and get elected within the party, despite the Party's awful awful awful credibility, brand [which it has been demolishing since the last term of GWB], and everything. RE: "They seem to not notice elections are actually about forming a government and staffing it with actual people, people the president chooses, and then directing (and hopefully restraining) a sprawling bureaucracy that not only can destroy you, but increasingly desires too." Oh we notice -- like we noticed the same thing with GWB, and McCain, and Romney. If there's one thing that the Republican Party has taught us it's that if you're a Republican liberal -- like Trump is -- you will "form a government" and "staff it with actual people" and then choose to NOT "restrain" a sprawling bureaucracy, nor foster individual liberty, nor foster free markets, nor foster private property rights, nor foster adherence to the Constitution. Why on earth should we elect liberal Republicans -- tyrants of our very own making -- when there are plenty of liberal Democrats who can get elected nicely without us and be tyrants of the *other party's* making? I'll paste in what I said on another thread. I don't vote for liberals. Didn't vote for Romney, didn't vote for McCain, didn't vote for Obama, won't vote for Trump, won't vote for Hillary. Why would I wish to vote for a *Republican* liberal and help *him* get elected so that we can all be informed then that Republicans now support minimum wages, hate free trade, love Planned Parenthood's "services," and don't care about the State forcing businesses to allow anybody into their own bathrooms? What a ridiculous "victory" that would be. I'll be horsewhipped if I vote for a man who, were he running under the banner of the Democrats as he should be, we would all be denouncing to the heavens for his evil scumbaggery, along with his awful economic and social justice ideology. The Republican leadership has been wheeling out their old "we'll lose the Supreme Court" panic attack since they nominated McCain, and then Romney, and now Trump -- not to mention that we did not *have* the Supreme Court back in the 70s anyway, sorta kinda regaining it in a loose sort of way in the 80s. I'll agree to care about the Supreme Court justices, when *they* care about it enough to nominate actual conservatives who stand for the clearly stated Republican party ideology of limited government, free markets, private property ownership, individual liberty, and adherence to the Constitution. Not *one* of those things does Trump stand for. Not *one*. I'm not any person of influence except in my own teensy circles -- but you bet I'm making my case amongst my friends as much as I can. President Trump destroys any chance of our having an actual conservative opposition party -- destroys it to the ground. Why on earth would I wish to offer the slightest bit of support for that destruction over the coming decades? President Clinton lasts for four years [if she doesn't die in office] and will be a liberal tyrant just as Obama was [and we survived when we were informed by shrieking hysterics in the Republican Party that if we didn't vote for their awful liberal candidate and he were elected for *either term* we were toast -- well we're not, and we won't be toast unless God wants us to be toast, and not before] and we'll all be able to publicly denounce her stances and policies in spades. President Trump will be coddled and kowtowed to just as Republicans did for the last two years of GWB's awful second term, where every liberal policy he announced and inflicted on our county they all cheered and supported. Those last two years as I watched aghast as Republicans all swayed and approved of those awful decisions and policies were THE thing that let me know I was no longer a Republican. Those days ended with those last two years of GWB and I've never looked back. It was one of the primary reasons why Obama could win so handily -- the conservatives were absolutely demoralized by the awful actions of GWB and people like me said "enough -- it's over" and thankfully, many millions more of us in the coming years have said the same thing. President Trump will be a bad influential odor for decades in any attempt to build the one thing [other than repentance before God] that our country actually needs, which is an actual conservative opposition party. Posted by: Igor at September 09, 2016 10:18 PM (bMaRP) 615
Here's the thing, Ace. While I've never thought of myself as a
party-line voter, in practice I've voted party-line Republican to date (if you don't count leaving a vote blank). For 2016 I will probably not vote, but if I do vote I'm more likely to vote for Hillary than Trump, and I'll happily own it, since you seem to really think it's important for "honesty" that we apostates wear that scarlet "H". I might not even stop there, as I'm very tempted to just scribble "Fuck you, Reince" on my ballot, vote down ticket Democrat, and be done with voting for good after November. The problem isn't that Trump is just too embarrassing for some of us because he's so goofy. For me at least, the problem mostly isn't even Trump himself. I don't like him, but all else being equal, I could have easily gone for the "hey, at least we'll keep him in check, while the media and federal bureaucracies will enable Hillary" argument. That's not what concerns me. What scares me to the point of #ImWithHer is seeing guys I used to admire like Giuliani and Gingrich adopt the rhetoric of authoritarianism or (for those like Paul Ryan and Rand Paul whose rhetorical conservatism at least had some small internal roots to take anchor with) a fearful Orwellian, hostage speech where you say the magic words that Reince needs you to, and talk around your real thoughts. It's seeing the cowards too afraid of offending their base to say that praise for dictators like Putin and Saddam Hussein is abhorrent and unbefitting an American leader. It's seeing the gleeful, aspiring authoritarian functionaries ready to spin on Putin's behalf because Dear Leader can't be wrong. It's seeing the self-debasing lies from figures of the Christian Right professing assurance of Trump's devout Christian faith. It's seeing Rick Perry sing about Trump's awesomeness while pretending he didn't call him a cancer on conservatism just months ago and hoping that inconvenient fact goes away down the memory hole. It's seeing a pundit who took a hiatus from his job at National Review to work on the Cruz primary campaign (Jay Nordlinger) maligned as Rubio-loving GOPe scum at the same time that Rience Priebus is putting the entirety of the party machinery (of which, much to Priebus's dismay, the conservative print punditry isn't part of except in the fevered imaginings of pro-Trump fanatics) to the task of making Trump president with a Republican legislature, not to mention running interference against internal party dissent on Trump's behalf when it was still an option to dump him. It's seeing the "conservatives" claiming "actually, Reagan really wasn't all that great and Trump's really just as good or better" over and over again. It's seeing the blogger whose political reasoning you spent the last 5 years revering turn around and decide emotional tantrums, Drudge Report-style headlines, and threats to quit the blog or leave the Republican party if Trump loses are the way to go to sell a case for Trump, a case that he wants us to think is incredibly important while simultaneously neglecting to devote to this cause the same level of intellectual firepower he's devoted in the past to mocking Neil DeGrasse Tyson's twitter followers and critiquing childhood breakfast cereals. Even if Trump evaporated into a non-sentient cloud of farts overnight, what's left of the Republican Party in 2016 is still not worth supporting, and probably won't be in 2020 either (I sure as hell don't plan on voting for anyone in 2020 who isn't named Cruz, Sasse, French, or Romney). One thing I am certainly grateful to Mr. Trump for is for pulling away the curtain and casting light on what I believe is our first clear glimpse at the machinery running this party, and it looks uglier than even a DrewMTips could have conceived it to be. Maybe this ugly trend within the party is superficial and temporary, and goes away like Obama's Hope and Change cult when the election drama is over and reality sinks in. But considering that social conservatives, small government conservatives, free market conservatives, and border hawk conservatives have all now dramatically demonstrated just how dirt fucking cheap that any one of these demographics can be bought for (and how ready and eager so many of them are to purge people like Cruz who actually believe that shit) to every ideologically-shape shifting, opportunistic, Clintonian snake on the planet, what incentive does the party have to make anyone besides donors happy from here on out? Win the primary, and the rest of the pieces fall in place for you by design. False promises, which the GOPe was rhetorically maligned for but never punished in earnest in any election, have been conclusively demonstrated to be the Gold Standard currency for internal Republican politics, if you want to rise to the top. I'll own the Hillary presidency if you'll own that. A Hillary presidency is over in probably 4 but maybe 8 years, can you say the same about a corrupt, self-serving, ideologically agnostic, amnesty-fetishist, dysfunctional, clusterfuck GOP? Do you really think the party rank and file are gonna be this mad about #NeverTrump in 4 years? 4 years ago I was fantasy-plotting my exodus to Steve Harper's Canada over TFG's re-election, and now I'd prefer a third term of Obama over either of the general election candidates. Your threats of Republican voters leaving the party in mass are meaningless, and your threats in a previous thread to leave the party over Trump rest on the foundation of your 2014 threats to leave the party over Boehner/McConnell/GOPe shenanigans (a promise that i am happy to make good on in your behalf right now and into perpetuity), and your a few months ago threats to support Hillary over Trump. If nothing else, man, principles, are pretty good for helping to sell threats. Regardless, saw a new poll earlier this week that the party's current general election support for Trump is at 88% of Republicans, which if that's comparable with the data I've seen from 538 of past Republican presidents (which is older, but showed Trump at a very competitive 85% in early summer), that edges out Romney's Republican party record of 87% (by contrast, Reagan's was 81%). The statistical data, that is, the numbers that actually swing elections, suggests the Republican Party is losing more voters to natural causes than to #NeverTrump. RE: "But considering that social conservatives, small government
conservatives, free market conservatives, and border hawk conservatives have all now dramatically demonstrated just how dirt fucking cheap that any one of these demographics can be bought for (and how ready and eager so many of them are to purge people like Cruz who actually believe that shit) to every ideologically-shape shifting, opportunistic, Clintonian snake on the planet, what incentive does the party have to make anyone besides donors happy from here on out?" Hey -- I'm a social conservatve, and a small government conservative, and a free market conservative [in former days this was just called a "conservative] -- and boy am I not bought. Not voting for Trump. I don't vote for liberals of either party. RE: "what incentive does the party have to make anyone besides donors happy from here on out?" But boy am I on board with this. Not a whole lot of people seeing this reality here. RE: "your 2014 threats to leave the party over Boehner/McConnell/GOPe shenanigans (a promise that i am happy to make good on in your behalf right now and into perpetuity) . . .
