I had a first at a restaurant today.

It's in one of those little towns on the road to somewhere else. Turns out they only take cash and personal checks, but don't have a sign anywhere indicating that.

Wasn't sure I had enough cash and was briefly pondering my situation, whereupon the waitress said "just mail us a check then."

I might have enough cas.....wait, what?

Sure enough, the waitress whips out an envelope with their address on it and gives it to me. Apparently it happens enough so they just keep a stack of envelopes at the cash register.

I ended up having enough cash including tip, but I could have walked out of there not paying a dime, and just got around to paying later. That was different.

33 I was confronted with the new Army yesterday at lunch. Three captains in uniform walked in behind me, a young hispanic gal, a half asian guy, and Sikh in a turban with a full beard. Now, I have no problem with the religious/ethnic make-up of this group, but the fact that I heard every single thing the woman was saying from the entire other side of the room was off-putting. The subject matter was inappropriate for the uniform too. No one needed to know about her on-going custody dispute with her mother over the child she had while she was a high school teenager or hear all about her West Point graduation ring. Decorum? Yeah, not so much.

There was one woman there tonight, probably thirty-ish. She had to have weighed about 400 lbs. I felt so bad for her - she had an attractive face and seemed otherwise normal. But she could barely walk and had to be helped into a chair. I was afraid it was going to break. The last place she needed to be was an all-you-can-eat fish fry. Easy for me to say, I know - but gee whiz lady - you're going to kill yourself.

Why would you say that? There are some very easily quantifiable aspects about "beauty". There are some very obvious cross-cultural patterns of beauty (the great bulk of cultures - of course there's always going to be one or two that worship dogs). Many of the artists of the past have talked about the proportions of beauty.

It's a big mistake to just throw away any concept of quantifiable characteristics of beauty (as measured by normal people).

And this AI program was really not much different than pretty much every culture on Earth.

That has been my theory for some time as well. It also meant to attract others of their species.
As a child I remember seeing a beautiful all white moth resting on a door. When I touched it, it opened it's wings and revealed a fluorescent orange body as those wings vibrated as a warning not to eat it.

No joke, but I have worked with various tattooed men and women that while physically attractive, were complete mental basket cases and it showed if you knew what to look for.

Beauty is mostly a measure of faces and the "classical beauty" is a face that has been pretty steady over millenia. Body types and other aspects change now and then but faces and what are considered beautiful faces have been pretty stable over recorded history. There have been small variations from time to time but the deeper proportions of the faces have been pretty constant.

Cromwell was easily a military genius many times greater than Washington, but Washington was a much greater statesman when it was time to put down the sword. Although 1650s England and 1780s America were radically different, comparing the two men is still interesting. I certainly don't think Cromwell is the villain the Royalists during the Restoration created.

When he sees another dog on a leash he lays down and stares, almost shyly. He's still a little rough around the edges, but did fine in a crowd today. Needs more work but overall a sweet dog.

This bugs me about my inability to understand military smarts. As many military people as there are in my family, and as much talk goes on about it, having never been in the military I can't grasp great military strategy. I've read two biographies of Catherine the Great and all the military parts are Greek to me. I want to read a biog of Frederick the Great but I know the same thing will happen. I need to see a movie to "get" anything military.

Funny thing, my cousin who's been in the Corps for about 15 years says she absolutely doesn't get civilian life and she'd freak if she had to live the way I do, contract to contract, going into projects without knowing spit about their tools and architecture or their product/service and having to dive in and start performing.

I was thinking more along the lines that Trump wanted to fuck stuff up enough for the GOP so that whoever the party nominated would lose.

But something funny happened on the way, he got the nomination, and now his ego is telling him that he is "this close" to being President, and I know think he wants it.

This election also points out just how unpopular Hillary is and why it shouldn't be a shock that Obama beat her in 08 and Sanders almost did it this year.

So I suspect that a number of women who don't really want to "waste time" putting effort into prettying themselves up figure that dying their hair is the minimal effort way of boosting their attractiveness.

Of course, the problem is that unusual hair colors typically only help make an already attractive person better looking. If you're not worth looking at in the first place, then dying your hair green is not going to change that.

Parents of a kid at church asked me to write a letter or recommendation for him to my college, I said sure. It's a small school, and the admission's director interviewed me when I applied. This director had been at another school several years before I interviewed and she interviewed my sister. She was also from the same town we lived in, and her dad was a friend of my dad. Needless to say, I've known her longer than from when I was in school. She even keeps in touch with you when you are a student and after you graduate. To say she is beloved by the alumni would be an understatement.

So, kid's parents want a recommendation. I write one, mother gets pissed off because it wasn't the "form" letter that somebody thought was the end all be all. At this point, I had known the admissions' director for 25 years, I didn't need a form letter to her. The admissions' director sends me back a handwritten note thanking me for the letter, but the mother is pissed about it. No big deal, and the kid gets in. Now, mom is all happy about it. After I did this for them and caught grief from them, the kid gets kicked out for an honor code violation.

After that happened, they barely spoke to us at church again.

400 Got home a little earlier than usual (although not as early as I'd like to be our habit), to make sure the cats were able to come inside: The storm line that stretches from St Louis to Amarillo is just coming upon us. Lightning, still too far away to be heard, flashes in the West. The wind has picked up, and wafts through the oaks, sounding like light surf. And it's cooling off, which is welcome.

A day of frustrations, near-escapes, and delays, mostly involving computers. I have to say, shopping for electronics, there's no point in going to Staples or Wal-Mart anymore. What we needed wasn't even on the shelves. Ordered through Amazon Prime, to be delivered on Sunday (via the PO Box, so, Monday morning) at no shipping charge.

So, have I missed anything worth noting in almost 400 comments? Surely there's a gem or two in there amongst the poop jokes and boob pics?

If there were, they'd probably have replaced her by now. Losing your majority is typically a sign that it's time for new leadership. But neither Pelosi nor Reid got replaced when that happened. I suspect that both of them know where a lot of bodies are buried.

I've sat of a porch on a ranch or three, when such was in the near-distant skies. Sometimes with friends, sometimes by myself.

But, when seeing those storms roll in, I'm fully aware that I'm certainly not alone there on that porch.

Burning Man is pretty much what the counterculture types wish reality actually was. No responsibility, no accountability, and everyone just running around flying their freak flags 24/7 without ever having to worry about things like bathing, where the next meal is coming from, or having to be productive in order to keep the lights on. Plus lots of drugs and sex.

The whole Thunderdome vibe would normally appeal to me, and I'd be tempted to show up in a lot of leather with a chrome codpiece, but all of the unwashed hippies and new-age mystical bullshit would ruin the fun for me.

Thanks to the anxiety triggered by his PT test and the sleep apnea that's been getting worse for two years, he hasn't slept properly in months. It doesn't help that his NCOIC is trying to passive-aggressively get him out of the AF while his commander is fighting to keep him in. Of course, this means I don't sleep either and my doctors want to double my anti-depressant to point I'll be a zombie, but I guess that means my Halloween costume is set for this year!

But since the entire theme is Mad Max, it is definitely going to be a lot more edgy and weapons- and hot-rod-friendly. Perhaps it will grow in upcoming years as a more truly anarcho-libertarian alterna-gathering, and get big enough so that people will really feel they are IN post-collapse Australia.

The "playa" where Burning Man takes place is on Federal "protected" land that is a "sensitive ecosystem," and the Federal laws ban any vehicle going over 5mph. The original regulation was to prevent off-road-vehicles and all-terrain-vehicles having crazy-ass drunken races across the endangered species habitats, but rules is rules and the Feds said they would revoke the permits for Burning Man if any vehicle ever went over 5mph -- so now that is a harshly enforced "law" there.

In fact, there are a zillion harshly enforced "laws" -- even more than in regular society -- but they're DIFFERENT and "better" laws in the eyes of the attendees. So in the end they're just creating yet another rule-bound bureaucratic society, and not being any freer at all. Sigh. Ain't it always the same.

I'm actually friends with a guy who by sheer chance attended the very first (now legendary) Burning Man on Baker Beach. He knew nothing about it ahead of time, and isn't the "Burner" type, but just by chance was wandering along the beach one night and stumbled into it. Now he is like a God among men -- the ultimate badge of coolness in certain circles, sorta of the equivalent of having been a stage-hand at Woodstock for the previous generation.

And actually, I know a girl who did go to a (much later) Burning Man to have an intentionally un-repressed sexual adventure, and came back really unhappy and disturbed, feeling basically that she had just been duped into volunteering to be gang-molested. She "consented" at the time, but later felt dirty and repulsed with herself. And, yes, the STDs. Shudder Count me out.

I'm actually friends with a guy who by sheer chance attended the very first (now legendary) Burning Man on Baker Beach. He knew nothing about it ahead of time, and isn't the "Burner" type, but just by chance was wandering along the beach one night and stumbled into it. Now he is like a God among men -- the ultimate badge of coolness in certain circles, sorta of the equivalent of having been a stage-hand at Woodstock for the previous generation.

And actually, I know a girl who did go to a (much later) Burning Man to have an intentionally un-repressed sexual adventure, and came back really unhappy and disturbed, feeling basically that she had just been duped into volunteering to be gang-molested. She "consented" at the time, but later felt dirty and repulsed with herself. And, yes, the STDs. Shudder Count me out.

Poor girl. That's terrible. She probably wanted to leave by Fay 2 but could not. Not being able to leave a place is a gearof mine, which is why I alwways drive and if by some chance I did not drive, I've been known to walk and hitchhiker long distances to get the hell out. My dad was the same way.

I assume attending the original Burning Man must have some pretty sweet fringe benefits for your friend.

I think the BLM could and sometimes does allow vehicles to drive on the playa -- individually. But they were concerned about 20,000 vehicles at once. Which, actually, I can sort of understand -- with 20,000 vehicles and NO SPEED LIMIT and NO ROADS and NO TRAFFIC LAWS, all sorts of accidents can occur - and the BLM didn't want to spend all summer picking up bodies and towing away totaled art cars. They used the "sensitive ecosystem" thing as an excuse.

Any utopia, sufficiently large, becomes hell.

I have had a remarkably similar recounting of events from a young woman who went to a Grateful Dead show back in the day. Who thought at the time that it would be a "liberating" experience, only to realize in retrospect that she had liberated herself only from basic common sense, and thereafter been crudely and cruelly exploited.

Maybe I've become unaccustomed to full time work but I am really glad this gig isn't permanent. We're helping the City of Los Angeles' IT organization inventory some of its infrastructure to enable better planning. They're fairly sure that a lot of it has gotten lost or inaccurate over the years. As it is, the only gear that has asset tags I've seen is some older Cisco switches. We're not just inventorying the equipment but also detailing the comm rooms and how they're constructed and equipped. In some cases this means I've needed to learn about a few thing I only understood hypothetically before as I'm odd man out in the crew as I've done nearly nothing in the past regarding ground bus bars and some other stuff.

The hard part of this is that we're starting at the City Hall complex, which means driving to downtown LA every morning. Traffic conditions are so erratic that I have to leave at 7 AM to hopefully be there at 9 AM. Sometimes, like today (Friday) this gets me there early and sometimes it isn't enough if there are freeways messed up by accidents. At best, it is a very slow tedious slog for the actual distance involved. I just don't know how people do this day in and day out for years and years. We should be done within September and I'll be glad to move on to dealing with various facilities all over the San Fernando Valley. Any one of them should be easier to get to without leaving excessively early and just having different destinations every day should make it less soul crushing.

The is supposed to run through around Thanksgiving, then maybe there will be a new project of a similar nature. This one is far enough away that it will only be four days a week and may have some overnight in motels rather than commuting both ways every day, as it would still involve crappy traffic as well as great distance. Twenty years ago this would have been alright if the money was good but I'm getting too old for this kind of thing.

I just did a similar job over the summer for one of the cable companies here in Texas. Inventoried and photographed critical infrastructure equipment for a bunch of their sites all over DFW and El Paso. Luckily, I didn't have to do anything like document the whole facility the way you're doing. You see, even in the most haphazard of their sites, they have their shit together, and things are documented pretty damned well.
