Sunday Morning Book Thread 09-11-2016: Milestones [OregonMuse]

Library - nuker 525.jpgLibrary of 'nuker' - AsoHQ Compliant

Good morning to all of you morons and moronettes and bartenders everywhere and all the ships at sea. Welcome to AoSHQ's stately, prestigious, internationally acclaimed and high-class Sunday Morning Book Thread, where men are men, all the 'ettes are gorgeous, safe spaces are underneath your house and are used as protection against actual dangers, like tornados, hurricanes, and the election of Hillary Clinton, and special snowflakes do not last. And unlike other AoSHQ comment threads, the Sunday Morning Book Thread is so hoity-toity, pants are required. Even if it's these.

This Week's Moron Library

Thanks to moron lurker 'nuker' for today's library pic. What caught my eye about it is the shelf just to the left of the picture in the center. Let's look a bit closer at it:

Library - nuker (detail).jpg

This is why I said that this library was AoSHQ compliant. Not only is having a skull in your library appropriate given the masthead of this blog, but placing a skull amidst books seems very fitting. Books represent the collected wisdom of the ages and the skull reminds us of our own ephemeral mortality. This is an appropriately conservative message for this appropriately conservative blog.

The Path To 9/11

There once was an Egyptian professor of education named Sayyid Qutb. He visited America in 1948 and stayed here for two years in order to study. Approximately 60 years later, a group of Muslim terrorists commandeered several passenger jet airlines and crashed them into buildings. Many people were killed.

These two things are related.

Qutb was a devout Muslim. He didn't like America very much:

He was critical of things he had observed in the United States: its materialism, individual freedoms, economic system, racism, brutal boxing matches, "poor" haircuts,[5] superficiality in conversations and friendships,[24] restrictions on divorce, enthusiasm for sports, lack of artistic feeling,[24] "animal-like" mixing of the sexes (which "went on even in churches"),[25] and strong support for the new Israeli state.[26]

Didn't like American women much, either:

[T]he American girl is well acquainted with her body's seductive capacity. She knows it lies in the face, and in expressive eyes, and thirsty lips. She knows seductiveness lies in the round breasts, the full buttocks, and in the shapely thighs, sleek legs – and she shows all this and does not hide it.

Oh, and we're all a bunch of uncultured louts:

The American is primitive in his artistic taste, both in what he enjoys as art and in his own artistic works. "Jazz" music is his music of choice. This is that music that the Negroes invented to satisfy their primitive inclinations, as well as their desire to be noisy on the one hand and to excite bestial tendencies on the other. The American's intoxication in "jazz" music does not reach its full completion until the music is accompanied by singing that is just as coarse and obnoxious as the music itself.

On his return to Egypt, Qutb published "The America that I Have Seen", wherein he detailed his litany of complaints. His experience in the U.S. is believed to have formed in part the impetus for his rejection of Western values and his move towards Islamism. He went on to write a number of books, among them works on the social and political implementation of Islam.

Probably Qutb's most well-known book is Milestones, wherein he discusses "the unique Quranic generation, the nature of the Quranic method, the characteristics of Islamic society, jihad in the cause of God, and a Muslim's nationality and his belief."

Also available is Basic Principles of the Islamic Worldview:

Sayyid Qutb addresses himself to the task of retrieving what he regards as the authentic mode of thought that is distinctive of Islam or even unique to it. This he does through the concise presentation of seven characteristics of Islamic thought, abundantly illustrated with the citation of relevant Qur'anic verses.

Qutb is the foremost modern Islamic theoretician for the latest version of militant Muslim fanaticism and terrorism. He greatly influenced Bin Laden and Zawahiri. He eventually became the "go-to guy" for Islamic terrorists.

In 1966, Qutb was convicted of conspiring to assassinate Egyptian president Gamal Nasser, and was subsequently executed.

But it was too late; the damage had already been done.

A Peek Inside Hillary's Library

It's probably full of these:

Kara Witham uses a scroll saw to expertly cut-out books so they can secretly hold a flask...They sell for about $50 - $60, and the flask is included, making them a great gift.

I think her site looks pretty good. Of note to morons is that she makes flask safes and also gun safes ("The perfect way to keep your handgun hidden and handy.").

From the very beginning Secret Safe Books was a huge success. Kara's day job was history in less than a year and after the plot was clear that crafting book safes would balance the books, John wrote off his day job to work full time at Secret Safe Books.

Who knew there would be such demand for this type of product?

Interesting collection of books to hide your flask in, including Teddy Kennedy's memoir and Hard Choices by Hillary "Hic!" Clinton.

Hers would certainly be a well-stocked library. Maybe she could hide some of this stuff in one of the books.

(h/t to whichever moron it is who mentioned this on an ONT earlier this week. I'm too lazy to hit the back button in my browser to find out who it is.)

Is This A Thing?

I'm not paying $12.99 for the Kindle edition of the autobiography of guitar god Eric Clapton. This is not a book that greattly interests me greatly, even if the price were lower. But I did notice this:

Born illegitimate in 1945 and raised by his grandparents, Eric never knew his father and, until the age of nine, believed his actual mother to be his sister.

Funny thing is, way back in high school I knew a guy like this. No, he wasn't a guitar god, but he had a really, old mom. He would invite me and his other friends over to his house and I noticed that his "mother" appeared to be quite old. In fact, her white hair made me think, "wow, she looks old enough to be William's grandmother", but I just thought she was one of those unfortunate women who(m) age is not kind to. Years later, I heard from a mutual friend that the reason she looked like a grandmother was because she, in fact, was William's grandmother, and his "sister" (whom I never met) was actually his mother. Exactly like EC.

And then I read somewhere that the actor Jack Nicholson came from the same "your mother is actually your grandmother" situation.

So my question is, how common is this? How many of you morons know somebody who came out of a family situation like this? I can't imagine what this does to a person who is told this.

William didn't find out about about this until he was an adult. He's kind of flaky in some ways, but basically, he's turned out OK. He's always had a steady job, and did not turn into a boozer/stoner/tweaker/etc. Clapton's life, on the other hand, has been characterized by poor decisions and self-destructive behavior as a counterpoint to his prodigious musical talent. Not sure we can draw any conclusions from these two data points other than: bad things happen when intact, 2-parent families fail, and what replaces them are never as good. So hadn't we ought to be encouraging and supporting them?

Moron Recommendations

Earlier this week, ace commented on Obama's support for the 'right' of Colin Kaepernick to make his stupidity public:

What we're permitted to do and what we should do are two entirely different concepts. Deceitful politicians -- on the left and on the right, but mostly on the left, where this evasion was perfected and then elevated to low art -- speak of the one when plainly the real question is about the other.

Moron commenter Stephen Price Blair responded with a book recommendation:

I recently read Allan Drury's 1962 A Shade of Difference; both it and the first book in the series, Advise and Consent, from 1959, had characters in it who pulled this rhetorical trick.

If you enjoy war-and-peace-sized thrillers about senatorial procedure and united nations procedure, I recommend them. It sounds boring, but it isn't.

I guess that's actually two recommendations.

___________

Moron commenter mindful webworker pointed me toward this review by the inestimable conservative blogger known as 'bookworm' of the works of author Dennis Koller, the reviewer has come to like. Koller's first novel, The Oath, a political thriller which bookworm says is "a book that seems to predict the Obama administration (if you don’t like Obama)".

Koller's third novel, "The Custer Conspiracy", hasn't been published yet, so we have to wait. But bookworm's review of The Oath intrigued me enough that I plunked down $4.99 for the Kindle edition.

___________

Moron lurker (and author) George Milonas tells me he has been reading the Bill the Vampire series by Rick Gaultieri, which he finds hilarious. I first mentioned Bill the Vampire a couple of years ago, and the book could have been written by a Moron.

The main character of this series is Bill Ryder,

...a dateless geek, but then he met a girl to die for. So he did. Unfortunately for him, that was just the beginning of his troubles. He awoke as a vampire, one of the legendary predators of the night. Sadly, fangs or not, he was still at the bottom of the food chain. Now he finds himself surrounded by creatures stronger, deadlier, and a lot cooler than he is ... and they all want to kick his teeth in.

This Kindle compilation of the 4 book series can be purchased for $6.99, or Prime members can read it for free.

What I'm Reading

World War II bequeathed us two advances much used by science fiction writers: atomic power and functional rocketry. It was only natural to combine the two, to imagine an atomic-powered rocket. That sounds pretty sexy, but atomic power really doesn't lend itself to jet/rocket propulsion. All it really does it heat stuff up. Atomic reactors are basically giant steam engines: the atomic pile is used to heat water which is used to drive a turbine that generates electricity (Faraday's Law FTW!). Huge amounts of electricity. Enough to power entire cities.

I've been thinking about this since I've started on the Heinlein juvey classic Rocket Ship Galileo. This book features an atomic powered rocket, and I was curious to see if a Heinlein was going to describe a mechanism or just do a bit of hand-waving. He did not disappoint. I'm not convinced, but he deserves props for trying. The atomic engine that the scientist uncle of one of the main characters constructed used radioactive thorium (not uranium) to heat zinc(!) to the evaporation point and then shoots the steam out the back of the ship as a jet and that's how he managed to get atomic propulsion that worked in the vacuum of space.

Don't know if that could ever work, but it at least sounds half-way plausible, at least to an untutored guy like me. Rocket Ship Galileo is a fun book (which, oddly enough, I've never read in my life until this month), as are pretty much all of Heinlein's juveys. Although I do have to chuckle at the quaint notion that Heinlein evidently had back in those days that the United Nations was a benign organization and not a viper's nest full of America-hating Euroweenie socialists, rat bastard commies, and corrupt, third-world kleptocrats.

Another way atomics could be used in space ships would be with that new proposed EM Drive (where microwaves are bounced off the the walls of a metal chamber and this somehow generates thrust - don't ask me how, I absolute do not understand how it works). You could have an atomic pile on board which can produce electricity which can be used to generate the necessary microwaves. Or, it might be easier just to use solar.

___________

Don't forget the AoSHQ reading group on Goodreads. It's meant to support horde writers and to talk about the great books that come up on the book thread. It's called AoSHQ Moron Horde and the link to it is here: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/175335-aoshq-moron-horde.

___________

So that's all for this week. As always, book thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to OregonMuse, Proprietor, AoSHQ Book Thread, at the book thread e-mail address: aoshqbookthread, followed by the 'at' sign, and then 'G' mail, and then dot cee oh emm.

What have you all been reading this week? Hopefully something good, because, as you all know, life is too short to be reading lousy books.

And on another note related to books, I finally got my copy of this year's Old Farmers Almanac. After 225 years they have decided to become like the rest of the liberal trash magazines and start with "green propaganda BS". I haven't read it all yet, but after decades of getting this almanac this may be my last year.

9 Still reading "Hollywood Party" and just getting to the dreaded blacklist. I hate commies. I found this quote: "The banks and their producer stooges continue their long tradition of 'cheesecake' and 'escapism,' hoping to divert the attention of the common nam from the real problems of housing, peace, health, jobs and high prices." What I noted was that the lies, pure outright lies, of what the commies wanted for the working man haven't changed a bit in 70 years.

Can you imagine the orgy we will be subjected to next year for the 100th anniversary of hell on earth?

The current Kindle book is Jay Nordlinger's on the children of various horrible dictators. Not very far into it, just on Mussolini's children who seem morally vapid.

And I have read most of "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up" by Marie Kondo, who seems to have suffered from OCD from a very early age. Also, anyone who says that if you haven't read a book, you never will and so should get rid of them is clearly nuts.

10 A nuclear powered space ship (outside the atmosphere, between planets) could be used to power an ion drive. It would make prodigious amounts of electricity, which would power the ion drive.
Ion drives have low specific impulse (g-acceleration), but are incredibly efficient compared to chemical rockets. And they are on continuously. So can accelerate a space ship to a pretty high velocity.

Read "Rocket Ship Galileo" years ago as a juvenile myself. And it has Nazis too.

16 OregonMuse, look up NERVA. Atomic rocket engines were actually a thing we built and tested; they were intended for the follow-up to the Apollo moon landings. They were basically liquid hydrogen steam engines, because low molecular weight makes for better efficiency in a nuclear rocket. (Zinc would actually be a really crappy choice)

My current MiL is the child; her oldest "sister" is her biological mother. Her grandparents were her parents. MiL is very Catholic and the subject, so far as she knows, isn't known by her own children so it never comes up.

My wife, however, had heard rumors when she was younger and then actually saw her mother's birth or baptismal certificate, on which the truth was spelled out, at the family home after the last relative living there died about a decade ago. If anyone is afflicted by this fact it is Mrs. Krebs, who felt compelled to tell her siblings, who most of whom did not want to hear it.

Life goes on.

24 I read a short story mentioned on one of the threads during the week. It's The New Utopia by Jerome K. Jerome. Written in 1891, it's a short, scathing satire skewering socialism and provided many laugh out loud moments for this reader. The opening paragraph:

"I had spend an extremely interesting evening. I had dined with some very 'advanced' friends of mine at the 'National Socialist Club'. We had an excellent dinner: the pheasant, stuffed with truffles, was a poem; and when I say that the '49 Chateau Lafitte was worth the price we had to pay for it, I do not see what more I can add in its favor."

This reminded me of the Hollywood global warmist types with their five or six mansions scattered across the globe and flying to them once a year on private jets.

I also read Speaker for the Dead, the sequel to Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. As much as I liked Ender's, I liked Speaker even more. I thought the story was complex and the world of Lusitania developed by Card was interesting, mysterious, and unlike any other I have read about. Great characters and a great furthering of Ender's story.

30 Nice to see Allen Drury's books mentioned. The later books in the series were critically derided for "strident anti-communism" (said as though that was a bad thing) but in many ways they were quite prescient, especially the character of Edward M. "Ted" Jason, an ambitious but empty governor elected with the help of a supportive media.

All the complaints about the MSM being operatives for the Left were pointed out by Drury 50 years ago and morestraint.

All the Advise and Consent series of books are now available as e-books.

40 1. Read "Into The Wild" by Jon Krakauer-
Not a new book, but has been on my shelf for a while. Story of a young man who in 1992 decided to hike into the Alaskan wilderness and live entirely off the land. Despite his youth and rampant idealism he managed to survive for over three months in total isolation. I'll save the money quote re: starvation and its effects on metabolism for Ace's "Tell us about your gainz, brah!" thread.

2. In my job we frequently run across grandparents raising their grandkids (perhaps one in every 30 to 35 families). In our part of the country it always seems to be meth-related, so the 20-year-old mother might look 40 and the 45-year-old grandmother might look 55-60. Generationally a little confusing sometimes.

44 Good morning fellow Book Threadists.

After this book thread I probably won't be on Ace for a week or two. We just got word that my father-in-law passed away this morning. This is not completely unexpected and he passed peacefully and painlessly in his sleep. That is the best we could have hoped for. I only mention it because some folks may notice my absence from the usual threads and wonder why. As Mrs. JTB is responsible for all his affairs, it will probably take a couple of weeks to settle everything.

While waiting for all the phone calls to come in, I'm going to enjoy this book thread. The maelstrom of packing begins this afternoon.

45 We absolutely need atomic-powered spaceships. They are necessary for interplanetary travel.

Chemical propulsion is needed to get us into orbit, but nuclear-powered spacecraft can then be assembled in orbit and sent on their way.

Heinlein famously said, "Once you're in orbit, you're halfway to anywhere in the solar system." That is literally true. It takes as much energy to go from a standing start to Earth orbit as it does to go from Earth orbit to any other destination.

47 31, Vlad, I just read an old article from 1999 in City Journal: http://tinyurl.com/hn44gte

My guess, when the current grannies die and their drug-addled daughters, the whole reason the children are in foster care to begin with, are the grannies, we will see children dying by the truck load. I doubt even then if social workers will get over their completely idiotic preference for family preference.

I recommend this book. Lots of vividly described information (if sometimes a little on the dry side).

I loved the anecdote about the convict who tried to escape from one of the prisons on Van Dieman's Land by covering himself in a kangaroo pelt, only to discover that the guards along the narrow isthmus hunted kangaroo in their spare time!!

Well, a tad more involved than that. For a NERVA type solid core engine, radiation and more importantly cooling are real and serious constraints.

I'm sorry if the details are a little sketchy here, but it's been several years since my grad school mentor told me this story about Qtub. He told me that Qtub spent some time in a small community in Colorado, close to where my mentor grew up and did his undergrad work. The people in that community did everything they could to make him feel welcome and include him in their activities. They invited him to socials, greeted him on the street, in short what you'd expect from small town America. He rejected all their overtures at friendliness. He'd decided from day one that he hated America, Americans, and everything that our country and its people represented. In short, he was a son of a (bleep)--sorry, I'm not much for using even mild profanity--thank my late mom for that.

61 I've been continuing with the Old Farmer's Almanac and the Collected Letters of CS Lewis. Once I get through the weather parts of the OFA I sip at the various articles and fun facts, deliberately stretching it out.

The CS Lewis letters are in three volumes, each over a thousand pages. Volume 3 is closer to two thousand. So this is a long term process but worth it. Just the casual mention of books and articles Lewis is reading is like a high level survey course in literature and criticism. Plus, the man had a serious sense of humor. They have proved to be a surprise and delight.

I have the Collected Letters on Kindle but don't want to be totally dependent on any e-reader, so I have the first two volumes coming in paperback. Not cheap but not too steep. Volume three is only available as an e-book and in hardcover and that hardback price is crazy. Eventually, I'll come across an affordable version.

I just finished "King of the Khyber Rifles" by Talbot Mundy. Written/published in 1916 it is a Bond, James Bond type story before the name Bond, James Bond was known. It is an old school tale of Empire and the far off exotic land of savages beyond the frontier and the people who live there. Specificially, the 'hill people' of the Khyber Pass. The book does have some artifacts from the process of converting an old text to modern digital, if that is important to you. The ending is anti-climatic because the magic of the story is in the beginning, and the middle; the story is the journey, not the destination. One minor quibble, in order to make it an old school romatic novel, the secondary character is female, and in that far off place, a female would never be allowed to lead an army of men, but Bond, James Bond would be half the man he is without a female to woo. (Free on Amazon.)

I spent some time studying modern day images of that area.

Sharbat Gula is probably a name you don't remember, but you will recognize her face from the cover of National Geographic.

Another interesting bit of work, "The Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World" by Bernard Shepherd Creasy is a bit of a slog through ancient history, but there are some useful nuggets buried in the recitation. One, humans haven't changed much in five thousand years. Two peace is an illusion. And historians draw conclusions about ancient events that are not always acceptable to other historians, and an innocent person is left wondering which account is believable.

There are some useful conclusions to be drawn about military prepardness; conclusions that have been ignored in modern times.

63 I must say that it used to be that if a grandmother took on the role of mother and the mother was known as the 'older sister', it was probably done out of a sense of social shame.

The ones I see currently it is much more common that the situation is one of societal collapse and the birth mother is incapacitated (usually with a drug history) and utterly incapable. These moms are more likely in their 20s. I see a fair number of teenage moms (pregnant at 16-1 who do raise their babies, usually with family assistance and often with the baby's father involved or even marrying. So I guess it's not all gloom and doom.

66 I once went on an overnight camel ride in the Sinai, for fun. The Arab woman leading the our little band told us that traditional caravan bedouins stop for meals only once, at night, to eat/drink and sleep. As that one meal has to last 24 hours, they highly sweeten their tea to 'fool' the body into wanting cup after cup after cup. It worked - we drank about nine cups of that very sweet tea.

The theory for the one that advanced the most was that the nuclear pile would eject ions directed out the rear of the rocket. Since those ions have mass the old equal and opposite theory would prevail and it would exert a force which would direct the rocket forward.

One other "nuclear powered rocket" was supposed to be driven by ejecting a nuclear bomb out the rear and the explosion would blast the rocket forward. I do hope that guy wasn't paid for that theory.

70 'So what happens in the hood when the current crop of grandmothers dies off?'

There is no shortage of 50 year old great-grandmas and I suspects a lot of great great grandmas are pulling a third shift. Some mothers do come back around but in the end it results in more feral youth. (See Chicago)

I see and hear about this everyday. Black families have been totally destroyed but it's not just that. As Muldoon mentioned earlier methheads, crackheads, and white trash in general are all on that train. There's always going to be some of that but it's getting worse and there's no reverse.

95 Read Shakespeare's Twelfth Night which has a similar plot to The Comedy of Errors: brother and sister twins enter a city not knowing the other is there, the sister dresses like a young man and they are mistaken for each other. TCOE is more like the Three Stooges level of comedy with the focus on slapstick, and TN is funnier and focuses more on the characters and beautiful language. Shakespeare was a better writer at this point. Great play.

Listened to John Ringo's take on Correia's Monsterhunter series, Grunge (Monster Hunter Memoirs #1) which follows the story of a monster hunter named Chad in the 1980's. It has the same fun mixture of action and humor as Correia's, though he discusses sex and politics more often. Enjoyed it a lot, look forward to the sequel later this year.

In one of the Niven/Pournelle novels ('Footfall', I think), they built a stadium-sized metal dome, put some space-shuttles and other aircraft on top of it, and then detonated a nuclear bomb underneath, in order to get to the bad guys' orbital platform to fight them.

It was compared to lighting a firecracker under a tin can.

It's about class, but they define it a bit differently-- basically, blue collar means "lower class" and "white collar" means middle class. However, it really seems to mean WASP vs. not WASP.

I'm soooo not WASP, which is evidenced in the fact that I really, really hate it when people aren't direct, and have no patience for office politics.

Qtub's sees this as paganism, which he also sees upon his return to Egypt. He calls for a return to true Islam, away from pagan actions and back to the Koran-- through the Muslim Brotherhood.

He also hated manicured lawns...

110 I've been reading a couple of books about how paints used in art were made from prehistory (cave paintings) to recently. Fascinating stuff. It takes in chemistry, history, technology, surprisingly long trade routes, craftsmanship, culture and economics. They point out that various ways of preparing a pigment will produce different results.

Master painters used to employ apprentices to prepare the paints and that way the knowledge was passed down the centuries. As commercial paints and pigments became available, that system of learning was phased out. As early as the mid-1800s, artists were lamenting the loss of knowledge and that certain colors and effects could no longer be achieved. That explains why I've read that certain illuminated manuscripts and stained glass windows cannot be reproduced. Even advanced modern science can't penetrate some of the mysteries.

The books are "The Brilliant History of Color in Art" and "Color: A Natural History of the Palette" Both are by Victoria Finlay, who is also a fine writer. Very enjoyable and informative.

121 Excellent library, nuker. I notice you also use the "gravity" system of organization, with attention to efficient packing. This is how you can tell people who use their libraries vs. have book-shaped decorations. We stack books any old how and leave piles to file later.

Note to anyone who may have pre-ordered the Light in the Darkness boxed set I have a book in! The Amazon robots had a seizure and took the whole thing down, canceling all the preorders. BUT! It is still happening. All the non-Amazon sources still have it, and we are in the process of getting it reinstated on Amazon. You may have to preorder again, though. Sorry!

132 I'm reading The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad--which I picked up free through iBooks. I don't know where it stands in the Conrad pantheon but I like it.

One thing that bothered me, slightly, is a passing reference to the father of one the communist/anarchist character. He is described as being a passionate preacher in a Christian sect who has unbounded confidence in his own righteousness.
The thing that bugs me the general observation is that I don't ever seen a reference to a committed Christian in a novel (apart from what could be called Christian fiction) that gets Christianity. Church-going Christian characters are almost invariably painted as self righteous. There's no denying many sincere believers are self-righteous but that's that the heart of the story.

I would like to see a novel with a peripheral Christian who's faith is presented as a positive thing in his life. I've come across lots of Muslim characters presented positively.

Just musing.

157 With attended what is now the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado where I attended in the mid 70s. Greeley began as a Utopian religious community named after Horace "Go West, Young Man" Greeley, abolitionist and failed Donk presidential candidate (and the craziest person ever to run on a major party ticket, present company excluded). Greeley has two claims to fame. It is the head of the Monfort Beef empire (that is responsible for the town's delightful aroma) and it is the inspiration for Centennial in James Michenor's novel (and the subsequent miniseries) Centennial. Greeley in the 70s was a small town which would have been much smaller but for the University. It is located north of Denver on the eastern plains of Colorado. In the 70s you heard rock with the student crowd and country everywhere else. In short, it was an all American small town about two decades behind the cool people on the coasts.

165 Greeley - that's where Kutb did his stint in America, and hated every minute of it. What a revolting little pissant.

I'm exhausted to the bone, after back to back marketing events here in Texas. An overnighter to Giddings for the eleventh annual Word Wrangler Book Festival, where they invite in local authors to come in and talk to the schoolkids about writing, and the importance of reading... we signed lots of autograph flyers, gave away bookmarks by the dozens, and sold half a dozen copies of Lone Star Sons at barely market rate because the kids wanted to read a rip-roaring western adventure. And it's my only kid-appropriate book at this point.

Then all yesterday at a craft fair on the grounds of the courthouse in San Marcos for my daughter's origami paper jewelry. Sigh - still hot here in Texas, but not unbearably so.

I have nearly finished Dave Freer's comic romp "Tom" - which is about a cat made into a human to work for an irascible magician. All kinds of science fiction in-jokes and a fun read at that.

Oh, and the third Luna City book should be out by the end of the month.

Just started Collecting the Dead, which is about an FBI tracker known as "The Human Bloodhound." It's really not that the character is an expert tracker but that he inherently "knows" whether an abductee is dead or alive when he starts "the search" and where to find the body; he just pretends it's all in the tracking. Can someone dumb down an explanation for atomic powered aircraft? What would the reactor power in a jet?

You asked about aircraft, but got an answer about rockets. So here is the answer to your question:

To power an aircraft, a reactor is used to heat air taken in at the front and thrust it out the rear. This exactly what a jet engine does by burning a hydrocarbon fuel. If the air flows directly through the reactor core, it comes out highly radioactive. To avoid that, you need a heat exchanger (in effect a radiator) to transfer the heat from the reactor core fluid to atmospheric air, without allowing the two fluids to physically intermix.

Unfortunately, in space there is no handy fluid (like air) to take in at the front, heat, and shoot out the back. You have to bring you own mass along. By the way, the EM Drive is very controversial and many think it is BS. I don't know enough to opine one way or the other.

There is "Islamic" art in the Louvre, in Paris. It is not what could be called primitive, but is not in any way inspiring.

The Louvre is full of inspiring art (and some not so inspiring art) from the last 2000 years. Sculpture, paintings, art. Wall size paintings of classic scenes from the Bible (Old and New Testament) and from classic literature.

Islamic art is included in one section, but seems very plain, bland and a big nothing burger by comparison. It is a dull and tedious philosophy and religion, to say the least, as represented by its "art".

There is a lot of Western "art" that is decadent and repulsive, because people in the West are at least semi-free. There are also things of great beauty and inspiration that are worth treasuring and preserving..

Islam is dead inside.

It's very much in the Rider Haggard genre -- ever hear that in a Haggard story, the chase always goes in the same direction, N by NW? -- and was a huge hit in Edwardian, Jacky Fisher Dreadnought days. Parts of it are written into James Bond's original back story. No doubt Fleming was in his thrall.

The more successful branch of Ian Fleming's family ran a worldwide bank with their fingers in everything, and are known to have employed private civilian intel agents to investigate investment opportunities, savory and less so. The mysterious island of Dr No is almost certainly Navassa, the center of a fascinating American business scandal in 1891. It's about 100 miles from Goldeneye.

191 Jerome K Jerome was a comedic writer who was something of the style predecessor of P. G. Wodehouse.
He was chosen, over Kipling, to be the editor of a magazine, The Idler. He also known for his Three Men in a Boat, which starts out as a travelogue of the Thames valley by row boat, and turns into a rained out picnic.

A lot of what he wrote, and editions of The Idler, can be found for free on www.gutenberg.org

I prosecuted child sex assault charges against such a guy. Two interesting things about him. During the investigation, he revealed he had a dungeon on a piece of property in a nearby town. Even knowing it was there, the cops couldn't find it and had to come back for more specific instructions. Also, once he was in the big house, he wrote a letter to another perv "giving" his victim to that perv.

Yes, but to be fair, most of human history can be described this way. Some homely horndogs start wars, while others invent great things, all in the hope of becoming rich enough to attract women.

Then you have Nicola Tesla, who may have actually castrated himself to avoid distraction from his work. That seems a bit counterproductive to me.

It felt like something Wolfe put together because there are bits of it that are interesting to him, and because he doesn't like Chomsky, which, again, completely understandable, but at the end of it, I couldn't understand what the book was intended to do.

243 Considering how much CS Lewis wrote in his life, I wondered HOW he wrote. He did not type and never wanted to. His preferred method was to use a dip pen and bottled ink. Apparently, he found the pace and rhythm suited to his thought process. (His brother actually typed everything for him.)

Just for fun, this week I broke out a dip pen and nib to try them. It is by far the lightest, weightless, and smoothest writing experience I've had. Even my excellent fountain pens can't compare and good pencils feel rough. As Lewis developed some arthritis in his hands as he aged, I wonder if that dip pen allowed him to continue writing as much as he did.

BTW, the best combination I tried was a hollow nib holder, an Esterbrook Relief 314 nib and a bottle of old Quink black ink. I just hope the paper he used was better than the lined yellow tablets so common today.

Also, Shelby Foote did all his drafts, including the 3 volume Civil War series, using a dip pen. Might explain why it took him twenty years to complete.

That's why the Galileo probe had, yes! a real nuclear power source. 144 plutonium, 238 fuel pellets, arrayed in two large canister devices called RTGs or Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators.

So it didn't use a thermal cycle of any sort to generate electricity. It did it directly from radiation.

I've actually found that writing longhand can be very helpful in writing papers. It forces you to think about what you're saying, and really helps in composing your thoughts and choosing the right words. Word processors are great for some (most) things, but for really quality writing, sometimes there is no substitute for slowing down and not letting your hands outrun your brain.

287 Another early 20th century spy novel writer was Manning Coles, who was the pseudonym for Adelaide Manning and Francis Coles, and the plots generally revolve around Tommy Hambledon, working for the Foreign Office from WWI through post-iron curtain Europe

He is a spy more like Peter Whimsey than James Bond, with a touch of Wodehouse-like lightheartedness, but Lord Peter never assassinated an Imperial German scientist with a steel knitting needle to the inner ear.

First story is Drink to Yesterday, which is set in WW1, and the second is A Toast to Tomorrow, which is set in 1933 Germany and explains what Tommy had been up to since 1917. Toast is an interesting book because it gives a ground level view, fairly immediate, of what the collapse of the German Empire looked like, and what the evolution through Weimar and onto the rise of the Nazi parti looked like.

304 Don't confuse Islamic with Arabic. Many stars were indeed named by Arabic astronomers, but that was centuries before Arabic science and culture was swept away by the rise of the warrior cult of Islam.

It wasn't until the tenth century (third century AH) that the stars started getting Arabic names. By then they had been Muslim for a long time like, er, three centuries.

There is however an argument they had been named by Hellenised Syriac-speakers before that. Those would have been Christians.

So my question is, how common is this? How many of you morons know somebody who came out of a family situation like this? I can't imagine what this does to a person who is told this.

I went to high school with a girl who got pregnant our sophomore year. Her parents adopted the baby and raised it as her sibling. I don't know the ending of the story, but always thought that was very weird.
---------------

As Trivial Pursuer says, it's common. It happened in my family a couple of generations ago. A few years after the mother in question gave birth to her "baby brother," she got pregnant again and this time she died in a criminal abortion.

The silly premise of "The Patty Duke Show" ("They're cousins! Identical cousins!") actually has some basis in fact.

So imagine finding out that no only is your sister your mother and your mother is your grandma but cousin Mary who looks so much like you is actually your twin.

My God, didn't you read all those 596 DD monster manuals and supplements?
-----------------------

That's a revenant.

A lich was defined up above. It's a spell caster of some sort who's gone off the deep end in his or her attempts to stay alive, and is now some sort of undead. They still maintain their former intelligence, however, and so are often extremely dangerous due to their magical abilities. Many versions keep their soul in a piece of jewelry that's very carefully hidden, and so can't be killed unless the piece of jewelry is destroyed.

A close cousin is the Khadi, or Heartless Sorceror. It's a sorceror who has physically removed their heart from their body, and can't die unless the heart is located and destroyed.

520 Yes, I noticed that too. And they seemed less concerned about
Hillary's condition than they were about keeping people away. Did you

Posted by: TrivialPursuer at September 11, 2016 11:54 AM (NnYnv)

I'm thinking that may very well be standard Secret Service protocol that they would do if any of their protectees went down, i.e. their first priority is to guard against any threats that could be coming in from any direction, so they need an outward facing shield.

531 This is part of the plan. By publicly "fainting" or whatever it is she did on an important and memorable day, they guarantee that even the LIVs only concerned about football will hear of it--or see video- and finally realize that Hillary is not healthy enough to run the rigors of a campaign--let alone be president.

The clock is now running on the end of her campaign.

I'm sorry, I haven't been able to suspend my disbelief enough to see Cruise as Jack Reacher, no matter how good an actor he is. In the novels, Jack Reacher is a physically intimidating 6 foot something 200+ lb. badass. Cruise, on the other hand is about a foot shorter and weighs about half that.

Now Adam Baldwin, *he* would make a good Jack Reacher. Also that actor who plays his CO on the TV series 'The Last Ship' would be good, too.

547 As a kid, my best friend was being raised by his grandparents. He was born out of wedlock. On rare occasions, his mother would come to visit. They were somber occasions.

We lost touch after high school graduation. One night, many years later, I left work at midnight. Decided to shower and go to a local bar. Sat at the only empty stool. Though he looked nothing like my childhood friend, the fellow next to me reminded me of him. Asked if his name was [redacted]. He looked at me with crazy eyes. I thought "Oh, oh spoke to the wrong person." He hung his head, then looked back at me and said "I came to this bar, far from my hometown, because I knew I would not run into anyone I knew." He was back home to settle the estate of his biological father.

A couple of years later I took a job that required travel. Visited him in San Francisco area. Found that his wife was a woman I knew. She would come home to visit, but she never mentioned she was married to him.

He maintained an admirable family and was a Vice President at IBM. His childhood history may have contributed to his strong family, have heard of such instances.

Hum! Zap! Smoke arises from the Beast's Lie Generator Module.

"You fool! You hooked up the de-fibulator! Now she will speak nothing but truth! We are ruined! Ruined, I tell you!"

553 Having a hard time lately finding distraction books . Usually I go to detective or mysteries for this. Someone here I think suggested Alex Segura Down the Dark Street, and Silent City. Read them out of order. Good, kind of old style noir , current day Miami. And I also picked off the library shelf The Murder Notebook Jonathan Santlofer. Sleep walked through 3/4 of it. Started again and once I got into it it was a good tale. Main character is a forensic artist and crimes are solved through his drawings. Pretty decent. I finished it.

Someone recommended Montefiore's Stalin . Picked it up. Don't know how I mised Montefiore in graduate school -- maybe slept through him also. But he looks like he has some other decent reads so thanks. I always default to Robert Conquest for the Stalin horrors and Solzhenitsyn, of course. so I am looking forward to Montefiore.

Help. It seems someone mentioned a book by a female writer -- she has written a few on Russia -- but the one I am thinking of is something like the Red Fortress, or the Red Kremlin . Can't remember.

Hard to make the thread in timely fashion, but it is my favorite. I always walk away with so much. Thanks OM and all youse guys.

560 If you read a number of Heinlein's Juvenile stories and his early shorts. They all talk of a UN running the world with limited autonomy to the national governments or to the blocks of interests nations folded themselves into. Also remember that big hope post WW2 was that the UN would eliminate war and that if you combine that with Heinlein's short story "solution unsatisfactory" (written in 1941), where an international police force has nuclear weapons and anot even more dangerous weapon based on nuclear dust. So the UN was a superior force compared to the older league of nations and even the Kellogg Pact on rejection of war from the 20s. Go later into Heinlein's writing and he calls out the UN for the corruption filled hive of villainy that we all knew it has become. Also, read his expanded universe books and he relates in an essay that all his shorts and juvenile novels as well as the adult ones from Starship Troopers on are on the same time line or have mild divergence where the new timeline loops back in to the main one at a later point.

Thanks I definitely will check them out. And I love it when something is well researched.

I know what you mean about the depression/mental institutions etc. Sometimes I can take it ( hey it's in a lot of D/M series involved with murderers etc) and sometimes not. In The Murder Notebook there is brain alteration. But the idea of using a forensic sketch artist to connect clues and lead to solving crimes is a good one.

565 Anna Puma @516, you are describing the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser story "Adept's Gambit". It is included in the collection "Swords in the Mist".

It has one of Leiber's very best opening paragraphs:

"It happened that while Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser were dallying in a wine shop near the Sidonian Harbor of Tyre, where all wine shops are of doubtful repute, a long-limbed yellow-haired Galatian girl lolling in Fafhrd's lap tuned suddenly into a wallopingly large sow. It was a singular occurance, even in Tyre. The Mouser's eyebrows arched as the Galatian's breasts, exposed by the Cretan dress that was the style revival of the hour, became the uppermost pair of slack white dugs, and he watched the whole proceeding with unfeigned interest."
