The Dance of Life
Edvard Munch

One of the pleasures of including art in the mid-morning thread is the occasional reminders of artists about whom I had forgotten. Munch is one of them (thank you L, Elle!). Everyone has seen "The Scream," but his other works vary quite a bit. Interesting stuff, though most are not beautiful or emotionally pleasing. The one below the fold comes close though.....

I can't even guess what those two painting signify unless the bottom one is the Tallahassie Bridge, and the two girls both loved Billy Joe McCallister.

Black and white represent hell and heaven. The dancers are representative of life and the choices that we make.
Some people choose to have giant asses and will obviously go to hell. Some people choose to try to eat other peoples faces off and will obviously go to hell. Those types of people are both men, and as such, will obviously go to hell which is why all the men are facing that way.

72 I never cared for Munch's paintings. They come across as primitive but without the charm of a Grandma Moses. Too much attitude. And they lack the pleasing shape and color of some abstracts. Often they remind me of Gauguin (not a good start) without the talent.

Part of my problem with Munch and others like him is he portrays scenes but celebrates nothing.

I weep comparing the magnificence of yesterday's "Wedding at Cana" with a lot of the 'art' of the twentieth century.

Posted by: Ghost of kari - certified sidebar at September 07, 2016 10:10 AM (Iy6JT)

78 Girls on the Bridge is an optical illusion. There was a number of complaints that Munch clearly forgot to put the moon in the reflection of the water or was trying to put up some specific meaning in its absence.

Then some art historians went to the site where it was painted about the same time and discovered that from that spot at that time the moon did not reflect, it was hidden by (I think) the house.

So it went from some obscure message painting to a "whoo! Look at that! Ain't that odd?"

The purpose of dance is either symbolic for sex, or it's part of the ritual of leading up to sex.

The Dance of Life, which Munch pained in 1900, takes place on a bright summer night along the shore of Aasgaardstrand in Oslo Fjord. Lit by a full moon, couples engage in an energetic dance. The phallic reflection of the moonlight in the water gives the scene a mood of sexuality.....

Finally, one can find a very personal interpretation for The Dance of Life. Munch's first romantic experience with a cousin provided him with his own experience of the process of love. After an impassioned and joyous love affair she severed their relationship in the late 1880s.

I guess if you're up in the 10% or so of attractiveness, that's true, but that kind of guy never needed the help anyway.

It's not like a guy of average looks can go up to a girl, say "let's go back to my place and fool around" and have her say yes very frequently.

If that guy's at a dancing venue, it's extremely easy to get a girl to dance, without any other interaction with her (and bonus points if you're actually good at it). It's just as good as a precursor to sex as it used to be, and if you're in the market for that sort of thing, the male/female ratio in those venues are a lot more favorable (and the girls are a lot more receptive) than your average bar.

166 Well, back in my mid-late 20s I dated more than my fair share of women and I'm of average looks.

It's cliche but confidence was a big thing. Plus I had a few things going for me - I had a very good job, a decent car, and a decent place. I found that a fair number of competitors in my age range at the time were missing at least one of those signifiers. I also knew enough on a date to keep quiet and listen to the woman instead of prattling on...again, my competitors tended to talk about themselves more in an attempt to try and impress the woman, instead of putting the woman in a place where she was trying to impress *me.*

I'm no Don Juan, but it worked. And I can't help but think that in this awful world of beta Millennial men, a reasonably with it kind of guy will have much more success than I ever did.

This type of painting reminds me of the episode where Bertie's pal Corky has painted a "modern art" interpretation of a baby, which the man who commissioned the painting despises. I don't buy the hand thing necessarily - but I do buy that she is being managed, heavily.

234 Trump should be able to pull 30% of the black vote easy.

Posted by: jwest at September 07, 2016 10:27 AM (Zs4uk)

African Americans used to vote 100% for Republicans. More than the percentage for Obama.

Abe Lincoln. Emancipation. All that. The first African Americans in the Congress were Republicans.

Herbert Hoover ruined it.

This is what wikipedia (yeah, I know) says:

Herbert Hoover enhanced his reputation by his achievements in directing flood relief operations as Secretary of Commerce under President Calvin Coolidge. The next year Hoover easily won the Republican 1928 nomination for President, and the general election that year. In upstate Louisiana, anger among yeomen farmers directed at the New Orleans elite for its damage of downriver parishes aided Huey Long's election to the governorship in 1928. Hoover was much lauded initially for his masterful handling of the refugee camps. Later reports about the poor treatment of blacks in those camps led him to make promises to the African-American community which he broke. As a result, he lost the black vote in the North in his re-election campaign in 1932. (Note: In the South, African Americans were still overwhelmingly disenfranchised by state constitutions and practices, as they remained until after passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.) Several reports on the terrible situation in the refugee camps, including one by the Colored Advisory Commission headed by Robert Russa Moton, were kept out of the media at Hoover's request, with the pledge of further reforms for blacks after the presidential election on 1928. His failure to deliver followed other disappointments by the Republican Party; Moton and other influential African Americans began to encourage black Americans to align instead with the national Democrats.

A lot of people think FDR bought the black vote with Social Security and stuff, but little known is the fact that Social Security at first cheated African Americans. Looking for some info on how the numbers trended with FDR's presidency, but Ike got 21% and then 39% of the "non-white" vote. Nixon in 1960 got 32% of the non-white vote, and then with Goldwater it cratered to 6%.

Gallup has only tracked "Black" as a separate category since 1988, when GHWB got 12%, and it tipped down to 9% in 92, and Bob Dole got 2%, and McCain beat him with just 1%.

I think suggesting that Trump can get 30% is wishcasting. Republican Party has way too much history to overcome. If he can get into double digits he will have achieved something great.

Came out in 1997, when I was a freshly minted solo-practice attorney with no clients, shitty advertising, and was artificially keeping my income down so that my first cheating ex-wife wouldn't get maintenance in the divorce.

I spent most of my summer that year playing nothing but this game.

Third person shooter with rednecks blasting aliens with dynamite sticks shot from crossbows, also firing rifles, shotguns and pistols.

I just had a flashback.

Ahhhh, good times. Good times.

I guarantee you that at some point tonight* she's going to trot out her laugh line about how silly it is that Trump says he knows more about ISIS than the generals.

I hope someone on his staff is working on a response along the lines of that he certainly knows more than Scankles, who can't even remember what the letter "C" stands for.

477 422 I'm curious how todays Navy treats Master Chiefs. When I was in from 74 to 80, with the exception of brand new Ensigns and really dumb officers, they were treated almost like 4 star Admirals.
Posted by: JackS at September 07, 2016 11:45 AM

They are treated as part of the "Triad"
CO, XO, Master Chief

I think the more Senior Officers and us "In Charge" even treat them better, since they make our lives easier. I happen to be particularly friendly with my Master Chief since we just get along and I am not some Candy Ass.
Posted by: Nevergiveup at September 07, 2016 11:53 AM

I was slightly better than an average dumb-ass Ensign (a very low bar) simply because I respected the E7 and 8s. A 9 was pretty much the same as an O7. The PO 1s and 2s were usually helpful after they'd had a chance to try you out, and/or the Chief had opined that you were ok and likely has potential.

The network the Chiefs have is not to be underestimated.

John Schindler is convinced that there's a Russian mole in the NSA who's just yanking the chain of the whole democratic process by leaking selected information. That would certainly be consistent with massive phone interception.
