15 Had an interesting weekend. Sunday we had an early patrol because of a triathelon swim event off the Belle Isle beach. That afternoon returning to our moorings we came across a boat above the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge whose outboard was on fire under the cowling. We got the people on board to put it out (I don't think they realized that there was an actual fire in there; they just thought they burned out the water pump.)

We had them anchored and I got out the tow rig and then we towed them back to the Wyandotte ramp so they could load up and we could get all of the information. I took a look at the engine and some photos - yep, there was a fire in there, the paint on the lower unit was gone.

I think we did pretty good - about twenty minutes between noticing there was a problem ("That doesn't look right") to dealing with it ("Sir, you might want to put that out." "What?" "The fire in the engine.") to getting them under tow.

As the saying goes, there are only two directions in Japan; up and down. Correction, only one: up!

Saw a lot of Buddhist temples, ate some great yakitori and sushi but, alas, no udon. Still, a great trip. Tokyo feels like you're living in "Blade Runner." Really lovely people. Death marches, surprise attacks and comfort women notwithstanding.

Seriously, it's an amazing country.

I seem to recall that there were dozens of people on this blog and others when Trump was down by 10-15+ points that he would never break 30% and hillary would have it in the bag by Labor Day.

That LA Times weekly rolling poll has probably been the most consistent one IMO. There have been way too many extremely wild swings in polls this election. That plus the typical shenanigans like what Reuters pulled when their own polling show Trump in the lead. They just changed the data.

I'd like to request prayers for my best friend today. I've mentioned him before--he's like a brother, and he's been a great help with dad, but now he's a medical wreck. He'd gone to an ortho doc for help with his arm that had been hurting him, and after a series of events that seems to smack of medical incompetence, he wound up in the hospital with raging bladder and kidney infections and a reaction to the steroids they likely shouldn't have used but did. Now he seems to be suffering gout, which is raising alarm bells about his kidneys (he had had another infection of bladder and kidney earlier in the year). All on top of carpal tunnel and tennis elbow, thanks ortho quacks...anyway he's in great pain, hasn't had full benefits at his job kick in and is afraid he will lose it because of all that's happened, and is generally quite miserable.

Any prayers would be appreciated. (Also for my sanity. It feels like I'm holding things around me together with duct tape and superglue.)

That's the thing - we've just come off of an Olympics where USA won many, many more medals than any other country. All those golds, all those opportunities for an activist athlete to make a brave stand.
But no....because they would never diss the anthem and US flag when it were played/hung in celebration of *their* victory. Also would likely spur Intn'l Olympic Committee to take action (like they did w/the two guys who did the raised fist on the podium in 1968, IIRC).

That's the real unknown in the polls: Are they accurate or are they (correctly/incorrectly?) assuming black turnout?

If there's any truth to this, it could, just maybe, put VA back in play (Kaine notwithstanding; most of NoVA is too carpetbaggerish for any meaningful 'favorite son' boost, IMO). Tidewater black turnout for Trump might help, though Kaine will likely carry Richmond anyway.

I'm skeptical--I still think VA is now a blue state--but I hope for it.

If I recall the exit polls of 2008/2012 correctly Obama got 96% of the black vote in 2008 and 95% in 2012. He also had record black turnout in 2008 and 2012 even though it was down some in 2012.

Scankles will NOT get the turnout Obama got. Why? Because black voters are just as racist as any voter in the deep dark Mississippi counties. But you will never hear that from anybody in the MFM.

.The left has been counting on that same level of black voter turnout when conducting their polls this cycle and it has shown.

I started seeing statements in the particulars of some polls that made no sense to me at first. They were using "internal projections" when adjusting polling data.

That took me a little while to figure out but what they were doing was adjusting the numbers to reflect the turnout in both 2008 and 2012. Something that has no chance of happening this cycle because obama is not on the ticket, nor is he actively campaigning for hillary.

Now that we are seeing likely voters being polled instead of adults or registered voters the numbers should settle down to something more reality based IMO.

The summer is nearly over. Americans will now turn their attention to the next big event on the horizon: Just who _should_ be president?

And note that we have yet to see a set of polls conducted a full week after Labor Day. If Clinton does not have at least a solid 6 point lead in the RealClear Politics average of polls on September 13, then she will find herself in a very competitive race - a dogfight, actually. That's probably not a good place for her to be. Especially considering that the last time she found herself in one of those, she got routed by Obama.

Public attention focusing in on the coming presidential election will only become keener and keener.
The big issues that Americans care about most will begin rise to the top of and dominate conversations regarding the presidential race. (By the way, which one of those important issues favors chokin'-coughin' Clinton again?)

I predict that the ridiculously false claims that Trump is a racist, a woman-hater, a CONMAN, and an unhinged hothead will ring hollow and pointless in the face of the serious issues that voters will demand be addressed.
And the Clinton surrogates who persist in pushing such vicious lies (instead of addressing voters' issues) will begin to run the risk of public blow-back. - Because those lame claims are already worn out and were never supported by the facts in the first place.

Let's see how Team Clinton's "strategy" of restricting Hillary's campaign schedule and exposure to press conferences works out as this race really heats up and voters really start to pay attention.
Does she even have the energy to shift into a higher, more competitive gear?
If Trump starts to draw even with her in the polling averages, will it even be an option for Hillary to step up her campaign appearances to vaguely compete with Trump's non-stop pace?

Some are wondering if maybe Trump has improved to trying to fill an Inside Straight with two cards to come. (-Or about 20%.)
But I think maybe he's got Ace King of Spades all-in in the preflop against a couple of red Queens. You'd rather be ahead than behind - but the 'made' hand is scarily vulnerable.
