the parts that really weren't connected directly to the plot were good. the plot parts (backstory, climax) i remember thinking were kind of lame.
good period to do a movie in. i remember being intrigued by the idea he was escorting a family to the west of England to take a ship to America. Such a weird idea, that America was this untamed wilderness.
few movies are set in that period. I think sometimes the Musketeeers movies mention the explorations into America and I find that weird too.

The idea also figures into the Conan novel "Hour of the Dragon" which has a chapter titled "Acheron Shall Rise Again" or something.
REH I think took various Kull stories and repackaged them as conan stories (conan was more popular and paid better) so I guess he just re-used this idea.

1. Train Wreck with Amy Schumer was the worst movie I have seen in a long time. I only watched it to see what all the fuss about her was all about.
2. August Osage County is absolutely execrable. I lived in Osage County for 10 years. I have had family that lived there all their lives. At no time could you tell the movie was filmed actually in Osage County, Oklahoma. The acting was awful. The screenplay was sh!t.

I tried to watch that movie no less than 5 times. Ands every single time I just couldn't take it and turned it off after 25 minutes, or so. Even the times that I started in the middle (to give the movie a little advantage) I couldn't take more than 20 minutes of it. But everyone I know loved it.

Awwww, I loved that! Especially the scene where they're draining the semen out of his balls with medical equipment and tubes. He was like, "What? I thought I was going to have bouncy sex with all of you until the end of time!" The ultimate irony scene.
I saw it on a double-bill with "Rancho Deluxe" at a repertory theatre, probably in the '90s. And yeah, "Rancho Deluxe" was indeed an absolute stinker.

the trailer for that looked awesome ... so I downloaded a lo-res copy of it. Man, that movie is awful! bad. Boring. Stupid. I watched almost an hour of it and just couldn't care less about what happened to anyone in it. I saw all of the exciting scenes that were in the freat trailer ... and the parts of the movie they came from sucked.
I have never been so disappointed in a movie from the impression of a trailer as with that one. I was amazed at the disconnect, really.

Exorcist 2: The Heretic... what the fuck?! John Boorman on acid directing a sequel to a film he hated.
Battlefield Earth... a relatively recent entry, this flick delivered. the lols.
All great shitty movies. The worst was Cannibal Holocaust. No redeeming qualities. All prints should be burned. Painful to watch. Not fun. Just horrible in every respect.

Very interesting movie. Done pretty well. Even though there are gaping holes in the storyline it's still worth watching. The writer did a decent job and he made it so that it isn't until some time after the movie's over that most of the worst plot holes might bother someone. During the movie, it's just good and not very hard to suspend disbelief and enjoy it quite thoroughly.

Didn't like Deep Impact either. I have it on tape, and I think the VCR still works, but don't know what shape the tape is in.
I had the capability of transfering tape to DVD but the software got the kill bit set when the law changeds.
Instead of wasting months of labor, I could just buy the DVD, but won't.
I also wouldn't nominate it for 'worst' either.

I went with my sister, and she decided to leave after the opening scene. Since she was driving, I had no choice. I would have preferred to stick around. I eventually did see the whole thing on TV at some point.

Anyway, I found myself rooting for the "antagonist", a husband who was being cuckholded.
He eventually shot the cuckhold, a younger man.

Disagree! First off, the husband was not being cucked. They were divorced. He wanted back with the wife, but she didn't want him. She started the affair with the younger guy.
The younger guy was an annoying type, but since he wasn't onscreen very much, no biggie.
The movie was incredibly well done. And, I liked the fact that the father got justice for his murdered son when the legal system failed to do its part.

One interesting tidbit about the film: The murder scenes were so realistic that the Italian authorities thought the director had actually killed people on set. At one point, they arrested him and started murder charges (didn't help that he had a bunch of his actors hide out, to enhance the truthiness factor since it was set up as a faux documentary). Only after the actors turned up, and the producers submitted photos of the VERY realistic effects work did they let him off the hook.

Despite all the dated comedy, Kelly's Heroes also has some surprisingly brutal on-screen combat, especially in the town assault scene. I kind of got the idea that Spielberg lifted a lot of the imagery for Saving Private Ryan from KH.

Yeah, but the film crew as villains comes across pretty heavily as symbolism for the vietnam war and whatnot. A large chunk of the running time is taken up with the producers yak yakking about the film in Rome(?). The rest is colonial imperialism analogies, general nastiness and animal snuff porn. They should have gone ahead with charges against the guy... for crimes against cinema.

I think that movie was made the way it was, with the emphasis on the love story, because of the yuge success of "Titanic". I loved that movie, because as far as I was concerned, the ship was the real star.
Also there was Kate Winslet. Drool.
Say what you will about James Cameron, but he dived on the wreck numerous times. That's about as dangerous as a spacewalk.

I'm surprised they didn't find him guilty anyway, then have the director file an appeal which overturned the verdict, then have a three judge panel at the Supreme Italican Court overturn that and find him guilty, which was then overturned the full Supreme Italican Court, whereupon the director went into hiding.

Leo dies a horrible death by hypothermia in the North Atlantic, before Winslet kisses him, saying "I'll never let you go". Then she flings his body away from the raft to sink and become fish food while rotting on the sea bottom.
That's just good entertainment for the whole family.

I love "A Night to Remember" too, but I'm also a Titanic buff so I had to see it. I was not disappointed. The models, sets, and costumes were exquisite. Hell, they built a nearly full-sized replica for the exterior shots! Gotta love that.
Like I said, the ship was the real star of that movie as far as I was concerned.
"A Night to Remember" is still the best straightforward telling of the story, of course. And they got the right version of "Nearer My God to Thee". There are a couple of different ones. One is more common in England and the other in America.

Anyway, I have a funny story about that. Around that time I was seriously in love with a woman who ended up marrying another man. But the three of us remained friends, and I never let on my true feelings for her.
She got pregnant, I was invited to the baby shower, and I decided to give her a half-ounce gold coin as a present. I had already bought it before I saw the movie.
I saw the movie about two weeks before the baby shower, and I was mortified by the ending. I thought, "Oh no! I can't give it to her now! It'll be too obvious!"
But then I figured that if I didn't do it, I'd regret it for the rest of my life. They both seemed pretty stunned when they opened it.

They were warned that they were not U.S. citizens and could not register to vote in U.S. elections. More than a hundred of these "dreamers" in North Carolina ignored the warnings (and ignored the instructions and warnings on the NC voter registration form) and registered to vote there anyway.
And those are the so-called "good, law-abiding, they just want to be good Americans" illegal aliens.

As for the speech itself, it was delivered in a totally Trumpian way, and I was good for it. He spoke from the heart, and he spoke without regard to what his critics think. For better or worse, if this is the kind of stuff we can expect to see for the next four years with him in the Oval Office, sign me up.

I just found it amusing that Trump delivered this big giant immigration speech, when the cloud was swirling about him about how he might "soften" his immigration approach, but because he framed his speech where he didn't actually *say* he would deport everyone, yet was very forceful and insistent on deporting illegals who were violent criminals, deporting illegals who were welfare moochers, reforming the immigration system generally, and forcefully ruled out amnesty, everyone seemed to miss the part where he refrained from saying he would deport everyone.
He really did soften his position by his own words. His position is basically the Rubio 2.0 position, just delivered with more bluster and more bravado and just avoiding the topic of what to do with illegals who have been here a long time and who are peaceful otherwise.

The key difference between Trump and his major rivals in the primaries, we were told, was that people like Rubio and Jeb and Perry weren't willing to deport all the illegals, but Trump was. Here, Trump himself never explicitly said that he would deport all the illegals, at a time when he himself said he was considering "softening" his approach. But he gave this fire-and-brimstone speech where he framed it in such a way that he never had to address the topic head-on about the illegals who weren't violent criminals or welfare moochers and everyone lapped it up. He is "softening" without making it appear that he is softening. It was very clever on Trump's part, I will give him credit for that.

None of the four top candidates are ideologically agreeable to me. Gary Johnson is closest, but his position on religious liberty is a real problem, *especially* when coming from a so-called libertarian. So I have to settle for voting strategically instead of voting aspirationally. I've decided that what I really want is to break this false binary choice fallacy that too many people are living under. I will probably hold my nose and vote for Johnson, but only because I want to see them cover the spread between Trump and Clinton to give voice to third parties.
