I'm not sure where you guys are getting this "Trump is slaying it" and "Shit does he look presidential" stuff. What's this trip to Mexico going to do for his numbers?
A couple of months ago, we'd look at polls, and you optimists would say "It's too early, show me battleground state polls in September." Well, that's fucking tomorrow. And I have not seen one, not a single goddamned, Trump ad on television. And every poll I've seen still puts him behind. And FL and OH are must-wins; plus he must win one of MI or PA. And I haven't seen him in the lead of a single poll in any of those states. And again, I'm in Ohio, and I haven't seen one single ad for him. So talk me off this ledge, fellers. Posted by: Pastafarian at August 31, 2016 04:39 PM (OWWiT)" I think the two WI polls that confirm each other, and the general slow movement back to preconvention polling averages have me off the ledge. Plus better polls in a few other places like NC, NV, FL, PA, OH etc. There has just not been so many of them to move the averages with the national ones. I think Trump is moving back toward 25% in Nate Silver's polls only forcast, and he was sounding the alarm earlier. These are all good signs that things are moving back into play. If an honest press actually existed in the US:
"Hillary may not have been at the meeting with the Meskin president personally, but she was certainly there in spirit. By that I mean at least 14 men in the 'Meskin president's security detail are carrying M-4 carbines that were illegally smuggled over the border to Mexico by the Obama administration in the scandalous Fast and Furious Operation. You may recall the Fast and Furious Operation from our previous reportage. That failed endeavor was ginned up by Hillary's State Department working with the ATF to make it look like 'Merkin guns were flooding over the border. Over 300 'Meskin nationals and one 'Merkin border patrol agent have been murdered with these illegal weapons." *wakes up and punches self in the face* Posted by: Sharkman at August 31, 2016 04:52 PM (CS7jF) 347
Turnout might be down among African American voters too, which is as good as voting for Trump (given historical margins). Posted by: MTF at August 31, 2016 04:49 PM (NVmJr) I can't help but wonder if black turnout modeling is skewing the polls and the variation we see in polling is due largely to this effect. We know that Obama had extremely high turnout among blacks, which make up 13% of the nation. If a pollster uses Obama style numbers it'll overstate the democratic advantage. Posted by: buzzion at August 31, 2016 04:55 PM (z/Ubi) Of course it's possible, but I think it's more likely that the idea came from Trump than from him. Whom does this visit benefit? Trump. Even if the Mexican President invites Hillary too, to appear even-handed, and she goes, the whole episode still benefits Trump first and foremost, because he's made illegal immigration from Mexico a centerpiece of his campaign. I'm getting a free piano delivered to me within the next hour. I'm so excited! Posted by: L, Elle at August 31, 2016 04:49 PM (6IPEM) Musical instruments are all about muscle memory. Any musical instrument will have books of drills to help you learn. Things like scales and chords, where you just repeat the same patterns over and over again. The beautiful thing about these practice drills is that the patterns they have you repeat are the patterns which end up appearing in the actual songs, which is how people can pick up a piece of music they've never played before and play it from sight. They aren't paying attention to each individual note, any more than when you read a book you're paying attention to every letter. Playing music is very cathartic. I played violin for about 12 years through high school, and it's a great way to help clear your head. Or entertain people. Hope you enjoy it. Why are the black keys only worth half a note?
Posted by: BLM at August 31, 2016 04:57 PM (LEJHr) It isn't really meant as a devaluation of the black keys, per se, but rather a way for the white keys to weaken the musical power of the composers who used more half notes in their compositions than was healthy. Eventually, the half note composers' works, being not as musically powerful as those of their white, whole-key composers, would fall into disfavor, and the music's equilibrium, which had been threatened with a bloody civil war that could have torn apart the entire symphonic world, would again be achieved. VA and CO are lost for GOP presidential hopes I think, your PA assessment is correct, but I think he's got a shot at NH, OR, NV, and IA. CT was polling weird before the Khan booby Trap. I'd like to see a new poll there, in a week or so.
****************************** Very possible, in fact the odds are higher than it's ever been in recent history that it would wind up a tie and going to the House. A tie meaning if Trump wins OH, FL, fails to get PA, but wins Nevada, Iowa and New Hampshire, getting 269 votes. I wish Colorado were a different story, it might have been but the cruz nevertrumpers completely fucked it up for us. Posted by: #NeverHillary at August 31, 2016 05:09 PM (LZgs/) 414
But sure, it's all because the Donald is unstoppable and inevitable. Posted by: pep at August 31, 2016 05:07 PM (LAe3v) Why invite either one if Clinton is such a shoe in? Posted by: Flawless Male Logic at August 31, 2016 05:09 PM (lKyWE) 415
Pep, not inevitable, but clearly Hilary isn't. If had this locked up, there is no way this meeting happens.

This trip will help Trump a great deal. I listen to Latino radio and CNN in Spanish and this is all they are talking about. And though my Spanish is a bit on the rusty side, it seems to have gone over well.

"Mexicans are just beyond reproach," Trump said. "Spectacular, spectacular and hardworking people."

Posted by: Pepe at August 31, 2016 05:02 PM (m3RIE) If the DNC doesn't have a live one on the ballet come election day, well then the Democrats didn't run a candidate for election. It is really that simple. Posted by: Burnt Toast at August 31, 2016 05:12 PM (P/kVC) 421

Posted by: #NeverHillary at August 31, 2016 05:09 PM (LZgs/)" It's been slipping away for a while, I'm not sure it would matter, maybe it would be a little closer without that stuff. Same with VA, shifting demographics, solid blue state now, that might spit out a republican in a statewide position now and then. Posted by: Dr. Shatterhand at August 31, 2016 05:12 PM (Uy8SG) 422

I can't help but wonder if black turnout modeling is skewing the polls and the variation we see in polling is due largely to this effect. We know that Obama had extremely high turnout among blacks, which make up 13% of the nation. If a pollster uses Obama style numbers it'll overstate the democratic advantage.

CNN: The trip was also unusual for not including his traveling press corps and coming against the advice of US diplomats.
CNN: wrote their usual snarky story about how Hillary has done all this in the past..and with her vast experience of dealing with foreign leaders, etc, etc Posted by: Colin at August 31, 2016 05:29 PM (hIWCG) 431

Logan act. I couldn't remember the name, and my google loo wasn't working. Obama should have Trump prosecuted for violating the Logan act by meeting with the President of Mexico. That would go over well. Posted by: No Where Man at August 31, 2016 05:32 PM (lhlvB) 434

Sabato tweet is hilarious--of course Pena Nieto knew that, so maybe Sabato needs to try and understand why he did it rather than just act shocked at how stupid the Pres. of Mexico is (which I am quite sure he isn't--stupid, that is)

Hmmmm... When I saw Trump was doing this I thought, here's a billionaire private citizen (for now, anyhow) going to visit the Mexican president. I wonder if there aren't a couple million ideas Trump could float that would move the needle his way.

How come none of the geniuses who comment on this topic never ask the question, "If these people coming over from Mexico are so wonderful, why doesn't Mexico build a wall on its OWN, to KEEP them, instead of complain bitterly about how we don't want them?"
