John Kerry: Media Would Do Us a Favor By Covering Terrorism Less So That People Wouldn't Know What's Going On

That's not a juiced headline; he really said that.

Speaking to the Thai press (Thailand having recently suffered a brutal terrorist attack), Kerry suggested that ignorance is the best defense:

Remember this: No country is immune from terrorism. It's easy to terrorize. Government and law enforcement have to be correct 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. But if you decide one day you're going to be a terrorist and you're willing to kill yourself, you can go out and kill some people. You can make some noise. Perhaps the media would do us all a service if they didn't cover it quite as much. People wouldn't know what's going on.

Last September Kerry also seemed to blame the media's mere coverage of terrorism for the terrorism problem.

32 You can make some noise. Perhaps the media would do us all a service if they didn't cover it quite as much. People wouldn't know what's going on.

I think this is becoming, believe it or not, a progressive talking point. Just the other day, I saw a YouTube vid of author Colin Flaherty ('White Girl Bleed A Lot') interviewd by lefty asswipe Thom Hartmann who continually berated him for wanting to cover incidents of 'the knockout game' (black-on-white racial violence). Asswipe Hartmann proclaimed 'coverage only encourages this behavior', but I think the real reason is that it busts up completely the lefty racial narrative (blacks are always victims) and that these incidents occur as a result of failed lefty social policy. So, yes, I can understand why progressives don't want to talk about it.

Posted by: ScoggDog at August 30, 2016 12:16 PM (4avHv)

47 Well...I think he's kind of got a point.
The whole idea of terrorism - as opposed to a military strike - is to create a maximum amount of terror with minimal resources and effort; every time some lone guy goes nuts with a machete on a train, we make it a big story in the media. This is exactly what the terrorists want; that's what "terrorism" is.
I don't know what the better alternative would involve, exactly; obviously, we need to be informed about the violent activities of enemies among us. But big, hysterical headlines and exciting special broadcast reports are the exact payoff our enemies are looking for, it seems to me.

Not to say ISIS isn't a bunch of thugs who need judicious application of Marines, Rangers, lead and steel to wipe them off of the Earth, but publicizing and reacting to every random attack is kind of the point of what they are doing- Make us believe they are a force that is everywhere and can strike anyone at anytime. He's trying to keep us from the pain and disappointment of trying to figure things out.

Much like the democrats have shielded inner city black children from the complexities of reading and writing, they will tell us what we need to know.

103 >>Well...I think he's kind of got a point.

The whole idea of terrorism - as opposed to a military strike - is
to create a maximum amount of terror with minimal resources and effort;
every time some lone guy goes nuts with a machete on a train, we make it
a big story in the media. This is exactly what the terrorists want;
that's what "terrorism" is

Kerry wants people ignorant so that he doesn't have to do something about it.He's doing this to save his on butt, it has nothing to do with stopping what the terrorists want.

In fact, I am so sick and tired of being told how to react by our admin and the MSM so as best not to play into the terrorists hands.

Being aware of terrorism makes one pissed off and itching to have his country freakin' DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

104 It is one thing to deny these murderous scum the media coverage they desire to push their agenda.

It is quite another thing to actively hide these acts in an attempt to cover one's own failings. In war time such gundecking of reports would get you front and center to a firing squad.

They've actually studied this and concluded that about the most effective measure in preventing future mass murders would be to stop covering them in the media like it's an epic event.

Of course, you'd never get any liberal on earth to say what Kerry said about terrorism about mass shootings.

And that's our current political / military class. They figure that if they ignore muslim terrorism long enough, eventually someone else will do the heavy, politically-incorrect job of exterminating the threat.

Of course, they'll cluck their tongues and complain to the feckless "international community" that such desperate action should not have been taken, in order to keep their precious principles burnished.

We make fun of SWJ's who are fat and have pink hair and 50 cats, but it's good that most look like that.

An attractive female SWJ can do a lot of damage - not the CK wasn't damaged goods to begin with.

266 And that's our current political / military class. They figure that if they ignore muslim terrorism long enough, eventually someone else will do the heavy, politically-incorrect job of exterminating the threat.

Not quite. Obama believes that the radical-vs-moderate fight in Islam is being worked out by the principals involved and that the West needs to "absorb" the resulting acts of terror as something that goes with the territory. Guard against them, yes, but when they occur, hey, sorry about that, shit happens, you know?

"B-b-b-but -- it's just not fair! Why was I selected as the strawman negative example?"

"Because you are personally responsible for Bush's second term! Now -- you want another Dem in the White for eight years, don't you?"

"Well, yes..."

"Then make a fool of yourself in public! Git!"

This is an intentional distraction - would not be surprised if Hillary is responsible for the story hitting now - right when the MSM was finally getting around to covering Huma's role at State and her MB ties.

Would everyone (who prays) please offer up a prayer that John McCain gets defeated today? He turned 80 yesterday and according to WaPo, he won't say if this is his last term.

It would be awesome if, in honor of Trump's immigration speech tomorrow in Az., Kelli Ward is the new GOP senate candidate.

Thanks!

Anyway, there was no way that f*cker was going to win in 2004.

With military/vet/leo/intel not all that enthused (read: pissed the f*ck off) that the FAB is thisclose to becoming President, I just don't see her winning.

Posted by: Vashta Nerada at August 30, 2016 01:24 PM (7ZVPa)

295 He's not wrong. The press really shouldn't cover it so sensationally. And the authorities should handle terrorists swiftly, silently and permanently.

What he is is insincere: He would never pass up an opportunity to profit from a terrorist attack if it could be blamed on a political opponent.

Posted by: moviegique at August 30, 2016 01:29 PM (7zeA4)

296 And, yes, he's also insincere in other senses as well: He'd never apply the logic to a rogue cop, but be all for it in cases of black-on-white crime.

The uzh.

298 "Government and law enforcement have to be correct 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year."

I'm sick of this excuse. If they had paid attention to the known terrorists in their midst (Hassan, the Boston killers, the San Berdoo killers) many people would still be alive.

Posted by: PJ at August 30, 2016 02:01 PM (cHuNI)

299 It's the same as what the right says about the black lives matter movement. Occasionally a stupid cop unjustifiably kills an unarmed black man. It happens. When the media focuses on every one of them it seems like it happens all the time. If the media stopped exploiting it, it would be less of an issue. Right?

To some extent it's the same with terrorism. More Americans are killed by stupid cops than terrorists in a given year. Terrorism is incredibly rare. Yet we focus on it such that people are in a panic over it. 60 people will die of bee stings this year in the US. None of it makes the news. If it did, people would be panicking about bees. In 2014 about 30 Americans died from terrorism (domestic and foreign). Excluding 2001, that's about an average year.

You are more likely to die striking a deer on the highway (130 Americans per year on average) than getting killed by a terrorist.

Add to that, the whole point of terrorism is to make the public panic and you have an actual reason not to make a big deal about it. That's what they want. They want us to panic and get upset. If you think the media pays too much attention to black men being killed by white cops, than it also spends too much time covering terrorism which is far more rare.
