People will be as thoughtless, lazy, and soft as they are allowed to be, and for a long time we have been able to afford to allow a great many people to be extremely thoughtless, lazy, and soft. It can be no surprise that such a population votes for candidates that promise things will be easy, and that they do not do the hard work of evaluating politicians' performance, and holding them to account for their failures.

172 We had a discussion about representative government a few weeks ago, and one fundamental point to remember is that representative government can't work if politicians across the board routinely lie.

The advantage to representative government is that a broad swathe of minds consider the positions on the issues of the day and then collectively they will make a better choice then any individual could at least in aggregate. This is rather like the market in economics.

If politicians and the media distort what the choices are, then this collective wisdom can't function - which we actually say in stark relief in the elections today.

The population has been voting against the status quo since at least 2000 and the only change we've seen is a more rapid advance of the status quo since then...

218 "My sense" - a possible hypothesis perhaps worthy of testing but nothing there to confirm or deny what he's saying

"we don't think ... " - in the progression of awareness, attitude, opinion and behavior, he's in the awareness phase; in other words, no call to action of any kind aside from collective thinking

" ... enough about ... " - maybe you do - he isn't pointedly blaming you - it's everybody else's fault - but not his, because his tweet proves that he is thinking about this stuff

"collectively" - each of us is innocent; it's only when all of our inadvertent, innocuous acts are lumped together that something bad happens

"unwittingly" - it's not our fault; we didn't mean to do it

"force" - it's not the politicians' fault, either

My sense is that Neil deGrasse Tyson, by absolving everybody of culpability and otherwise saying nothing, is making people feel good about following Neil deGrasse Tyson on Twitter.

The secular humanists? The 'Spiritual but not Religious" Folks" Or the Green Cresent, for that matter? Or Black Lives Matter? How come there's no help from all the folks who knock Christianity and religion in general? Do you think the Cajun Navy inquires about the religious beliefs or sexual habits, or race or creed or color when they fish someone out of a flooded house?

If non-religious folks stepped up, CNN would be all in Catholic Charities, asking why they aren't helping. But asking folks who knock religion why they don't step up? Crickets PFUI. MSM delenda est.

I know this isn't what Black Bill Nye was going for, but if politicians
told the truth, they wouldn't get elected. No one wants to hear the
uncomfortable truths of the real world, so politicians keep peddling
fantasies.
==========
But, at the end of the day, the politicians would not be able to peddle fantasies, e.g. "$15/hr minimum wage will not hurt anyone" if there were an independent, honest media.

Instead, we have a media dominated top to bottom by people who have an interest and a desire to see one side "win" regardless of the truth.

So, "tax cuts stimulate the economy" is deemed a lie--despite the empirical evidence it does.
While, "increased government spending stimulates the economy" is deemed a truth--despite the empirical evidence it does not.

Nevertheless, this figure amounts to over 50% of "discretionary" spending for 2015.
Are entitlements a bigger problem? Sure. Is the military a specifically-enumerated Constitutional responsibility? Sure. (Of course, the courts have ruled that entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare are constitutional also, so this is de facto a distinction without a difference).

307 Think Moo has been banned for a while.

And I meant to soften my comment there, by noting that the idiotic equal budget cuts thing was not typical of all his ideas, which were not uniformly bad.

Even worse, that very idea was enshrined in public policy by the "sequester". Take recently, wildly, inflated spending on many things that aren't even a proper federal responsibility, and cut it just as much as you cut the primary, logical, constitutionally expressly defined federal responsibility - common defense. This was the "logic" of the sequester.

But back to the general topic here, the electorate doesn't "force" anything, it "allows" it. It tolerates it.

The novel, devastating new twist is that at least since 2010, the electorate has spoken comparatively boldly (by historical standards), and yet its clearest messages have been ignored, or thrown back in its face. The linkage that makes govt. "representative" seems broken.

A completely dysfunctional and distorted information environment, and the death-spiral of society being factionalized and looking to govt. to enrich itself regardless of longer term results cloud the picture a bit.

Posted by: VA GOP Sucks
________

At my last job, I told this kid (I think he was 19) to make sure all the staplers were filled. I'd given my notice and I wanted to prepare this kid for my absence two weeks hence. I harped on staplers - said it was his job to make sure that no stapler in the building runs out of staples - told him the added responsibility was important.

My last day, I was talking with the general manager. He says he's leaning toward firing the kid. I said I could go either way - slow to learn but eventually gets it, and he's nice - give him another shot.

Boss was still on the fence, so I told him about his stapler duty. My final suggestion: "If the staplers stay filled, keep him. But if you ever run out of staples, fire him." I don't know the kid's fate at the company, but that was the plan when I left.

I think there is a HUGE difference between something being constitutional and something that is a Constitutional responsibility.

Posted by: Brunnhilde at August 24, 2016 12:38 PM (aW5/6)
--
In practical terms, there really isn't a difference. If Congress has a constitutional "responsibility" to maintain a military -- well, Congress can decide whether, in its judgment, that military will consist of the USA armed forces, as we know of them today, or the employ of an aged coot wielding a rusty blunderbuss. The only political body that can make any difference is the voting populace, who would presumably vote out members of Congress who opted for the latter.
This is exactly the same mechanism that allows Congress to decide it can spend the patrimony of the country on entitlement-welfare systems. The only way to hold them to account is to vote them out of office if they don't cut entitlement programs. Now, back to the original topic -- if honesty resonated with the people, having political candidates trumpet from the rooftops that the country is going bankrupt because of reckless spending -- and that spending must be cut immediately -- would be rewarded. It is not. People would much rather believe that their spending must not be touched. And they will punish politicians who deign to say otherwise, the truth be damned.

--Ok. If your position is that Congress cannot spend any money on anything that is not specifically enumerated in the Constitution, then, taken to its logical conclusion, all federal entitlement programs are unconstitutional, as are most federal agencies. This would run afoul of two centuries of Constitutional Law. See McCulloch v. Maryland, 17 U.S. 316 (1819).Otherwise, it seems to me that the "yawning gulf of distinction and difference" you reference is really a moral distinction which would justify ending, or reducing one category of spending before reducing or eliminating another, because the link between spending in one category is more directly-tied to an enumerated power of Congress than another. If that's true, then OK. But its a moral position, not a legal one. Its a distinction without a difference to anyone who does not subscribe to the same moral guidance as you.

339 I do think there's something to his thought. If he's trying to excuse Hillary, well then, he is indeed an idiot.

But there are other sorts of lies politicians tell us that are, unfortunately, far more consequential than Hillary's kinds of lies. The biggest example of which is our entitlement state. No politician wants to tell us that we can't have broad-based entitlements for the middle class if the middle class barely pays any income taxes. And this is a lie--maybe it's better called an omission--that people want to here because we all like free lunches.

343 Kipling already covered it 114 years ago:

"NO DOUBT but ye are the People-your throne is above the King's.
Whoso speaks in your presence must say acceptable things:
Bowing the head in worship, bending the knee in fear-
Bringing the word well smoothen-such as a King should hear."

"No doubt but ye are the People-absolute, strong, and wise;
Whatever your heart has desired ye have not withheld from your eyes.
On your own heads, in your own hands, the sin and the saving lies!"

The problem with Tyson's version is that he lacks the self-reflection to realize that he lies just as much, if not more, than politicians.
