The advantage to representative government is that a broad swathe of minds consider the positions on the issues of the day and then collectively they will make a better choice then any individual could at least in aggregate. This is rather like the market in economics.

If politicians and the media distort what the choices are, then this collective wisdom can't function - which we actually say in stark relief in the elections today.

The population has been voting against the status quo since at least 2000 and the only change we've seen is a more rapid advance of the status quo since then...

At my last job, I told this kid (I think he was 19) to make sure all the staplers were filled. I'd given my notice and I wanted to prepare this kid for my absence two weeks hence. I harped on staplers - said it was his job to make sure that no stapler in the building runs out of staples - told him the added responsibility was important.

My last day, I was talking with the general manager. He says he's leaning toward firing the kid. I said I could go either way - slow to learn but eventually gets it, and he's nice - give him another shot.

Boss was still on the fence, so I told him about his stapler duty. My final suggestion: "If the staplers stay filled, keep him. But if you ever run out of staples, fire him." I don't know the kid's fate at the company, but that was the plan when I left.

If Congress has a constitutional "responsibility" to maintain a military -- well, Congress can decide whether, in its judgment, that military will consist of the USA armed forces, as we know of them today, or the employ of an aged coot wielding a rusty blunderbuss. The only political body that can make any difference is the voting populace, who would presumably vote out members of Congress who opted for the latter.
This is exactly the same mechanism that allows Congress to decide it can spend the patrimony of the country on entitlement-welfare systems. The only way to hold them to account is to vote them out of office if they don't cut entitlement programs.Now, back to the original topic -- if honesty resonated with the people, having political candidates trumpet from the rooftops that the country is going bankrupt because of reckless spending -- and that spending must be cut immediately -- would be rewarded.It is not. People would much rather believe that their spending must not be touched. And they will punish politicians who deign to say otherwise, the truth be damned.
