11 I wonder why the lefty academics hate Trump so much. Oh wait, I know! It's not Trump at all, instead it's because ideologues with guaranteed lifetime employment look for opportunities to flip off us worker bees, and remind us of our place.

They're also very often unreconstructed adolescents who sympathize with the agendas of youth--free stuff, consequence-free living, acting out, tantrums, etc.

17 I'm told almost continually, to be ashamed of my white privilege. My question is this:

If I'm supposed to be ashamed of my white privilege, why are lefties supposed to be ashamed of their lefty privilege that keeps the Clinton's out of jail, for example, or illegals being regarded as criminals for... hello!... breaking the law?

Just musing really, at this point.

27 Another apparent inconsistency in the application of laws in, what our erstwhile politicians refer to as, "a country of laws":

The sailor who took pictures of a submarine and sent them to no one, was sentenced to a year in jail. They tried to invoke the "Clinton" defense, but unfortunately the sailor's name wasn't Clinton so it didn't stick.

38 So high speed rail is going the way of Boston's Big Dig, cost overrun-wise.

Feature, not a bug. One of the pleasant surprises from television lately was season two of True Detective last year on HBO. It contained a very sharp and realistic indictment of the high speed rail stupidity in Cali. Predictably, crickets from the media about that portion of the plot line.

Technically, that's why it's called the Clinton Defense, the established rules still apply to peons as high up in the elites as Petraeus, and this was effectively codified into "settled law" by that FBI traitor Comey. The sailor didn't have a chance.

It's going to be interesting to see if if is expanded to become the Clinton/Abedin-Weiner Defense.

78 My family and I ate at that HoJos in Bangor, Maine last summer. Fun fact for culinary nerds: HoJos became a ground breaking restaurant, introducing Americans to exotic foods like French onion soup. They hired a young, executive chef, originally from France to incorporate continental cuisine into the chain of restaurants: Jacques Pepin. Sub note: Pepin turned down a job offer from JFK to be his personal chef to work for Howard Johnson's. Sad to see them go.

81 I'm amused by the #nevertrump pundits who are poking fun at Trump supporters over this potential shift in deportation language.

These people have not been paying attention. It has long been speculated and I think expected by most people that the he was going to take a softer tone on this. Remember back like a year ago, when we were talking about negotiation tactics and The Art of the Deal? I think we're prepared for this. That being said, it is a risk, as I'm sure there are some out there where this is a potential deal breaker.

For me I've never thought this to be a viable policy. Border security first, and then we can figure out to do with the ones here. Deport some, let some others stay, we can figure that out once we are able to seriously halt the flow in.

Lots of great restaurants, but one of my all time favorites in Kyoto is-

Yoshikawa.

It's the tempura restaurant in Kyoto. Very small place.

It's better to go at lunch as the lunch time menu is cheaper than the dinner menu. And try to arrive when it opens. I fills up fast. (It's very small!)

They're also a ryokan (Japanese-style inn) so if you wish to indulge you and the missus might want to stay there one night (cuz it's fairly expensive).

Your stay includes meals, which for dinner means a fabulous full course tempura/kaiseki meal.

Anyway check it out.

Or something.

And the abuse of the English language continues.

"Colored person" is not as offensive as "person of color" because of simple grammar and context. To say "colored person" is to simply say that the subject is a person in his own right, who happens to be colored. "Person of color," on the other hand, says that the subject's identity is in fact defined by his color.

Consider the difference between a "Godly person" and a "person of God." in comparison.

"Person of color" is a racist turn of phrase.

I've had this argument with my friends and family over the years, who are adamant about mass deportation. I'm leery of setting up some type of second class citizenship, I certainly don't think that designation would last more than a decade before there were attempts to normalize them.

Might be some way to combine the two strategies, register everyone and given them the option, stay and never vote, ever... or leave and get in line, and work towards full citizenship. Either way you have everyone at some baseline of legal status. If you get caught and never registered for the amnesty you are immediately deported, and permanently banned from re-entry no appeals.

The best part was explaining to my wife why I wanted to pay a premium to ride the ferry from Elsinore to Helsingborg rather than take the bridge to Malmo. I finally said, "Malmo is like Damascus, but with more crime and violence. Want to check it out?"

Wouldn't last more than the time it took to file the court case.
Which is why mass deportation for those who entered illegally is the only way. Treat lawbreakers as lawbreakers.
Trying to treat an illegal as a 2nd class citizen would never pass court muster.

Answer me this ... since we're all such little r republicans, staunch conservatives, and so severely conservative ...

Why in the hell is a school conducting overnite field trips ? I don't trust school with my kids overnite.

Seems to me we've somewhat fvcked ourselves ... by cheering right along with the rest of the mouth-breathing idiots as schools got bigger and bigger with more and more programs "we" liked. Shit like athletic fields that compared favorably to NAIA and Division II colleges. Elaborate band programs so Little Johnny could feel important too. And so
on and so on.

Well surprise, surprise. Now another big power structure doing shit we liked has started doing shit we don't. Have we learned yet to dustrust ALL big power structures ?

Probably not.

I went to a wedding last year where the father of the bride was a tranny. There is just something ridiculous about a man in his late-50's/60's who apart from the long gray thinning hair, make-up, and cocktail dress still otherwise presents as a man.

There was also a midget at the wedding, and I'm pretty sure the place that hosted it was an antebellum slave plantation. Good wine, though.

Elementary school, yeah, but high school? I dunno, but overnight trips aren't terribly uncommon. My high school had band trips that went to various parades and those were overnight. The other clubs had some similar things as well.

Let's see...

Possible extremist motivations for the attack are now being investigated
by Queensland Police and the Australian Federal Police, with the man
yet to be questioned by investigators.....

Promising!

"While this information will be factored into the investigation, we
are not ruling out any motivations at this stage, whether they be
political or criminal," he told reporters in Brisbane.

"Investigators will also consider whether mental health or drug misuse factors are involved in this incident."

And then they retreat.

Mr Gollschewski said the man yelled "Allahu Akbar" both during the attack and while being arrested by police.
And...?
The man didn't have any known links to the Islamic State group, he said. "This person appears to have acted alone," Mr Gollschewski said. "He is
a visitor to Australia and has no known local connections, however
investigations are ongoing." He said charges were yet to be laid but
police weren't looking for any other suspects and there was no known
ongoing threat to the community. "This is not about race or religion --- it is individual criminal behaviour," he said.

Never mind. Nothing to see here, move along.

No, I had to explain to my dear wife who doesn't follow such things why we were paying extra to ride the ferry from Helsingor to Helsingborg instead of taking the bridge from Copenhagen to Malmo. I was adamant we avoid Malmo.

Gothenburg was mandatory since the purpose of the trip was factory delivery of a new Volvo car (when you have a new baby, you start looking at things like safety ratings and crash test results.) The part we were in wasn't bad, but were in town the day the grenade exploded in the suburbs.

Was just passing through and saw this.

What isn't right is that no GOP president has the stones to hang - either figuratively or literally - the fifth columnists, MFM or Democrats (BIRM) who actively betray the military. If you want to win a war, then you have to hammer the domestic enemy into the ground. And if that means dragging pieces of filth like Harry "the war is lost!" Reid off of the Senate floor and throwing them into jail - Congressional immunity be damned - then that's what should be done.

Otherwise, keep counting those "grim milestones."

First of all, the military is probably the ONLY thing the Federal government is supposed to spend money on.

Second, the money spent on it is dwarfed by what is spent on so-called "entitlement" programs.

That said, like every other department of the government, the DoD is not immune to corruption, incompetence and graft - see: F-35 program as one example.

BUT, everything the left says about military spending is total and complete crap - as it is about what they say about everything in general.

Third world country - you don't really need to pass the exam to get a license - you just need to start the car, move forward and backward a few feet, and hand the examiner a bit of cash. Nobody actually gets a real exam - the examiners just want the cash, don't waste their time.

You write down the volunteers' names, their addresses, telephone numbers, and the make, color, and registration of the boat and ask them to check in every hour or so. That's to know who is out there (to discourage looters).

All of which local law enforcement is likely doing because that would fall under ICS practices.

286 Sad to hear about Ho Jo's. Lots of memories from archetype road trips by car through roadside America in the 60's

-Fried clam rolls and a side of fries

-Fried scallop platters

- Knowing if we stopped at a HoJo's Motor Lodge there would be a nice pool and a great meal for dinner

-Wednesday night "All You Can Eat Fish Frys"

-Black raspberry sherbert for dessert (I forget how many flavors they had, but a lot in an age when it was usually vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry, period).

In those days, a night out at HoJo's with my parents was a real treat for me. On birthdays I got to take a friend with me. If I was really lucky, my parents would let me also take home a bag of their popcorn for a TV snack.

Life was simple, and very good.

They were busy working, paying the bills, and raising you. Grandparents have less to worry about. They're towards the end of the journey. And they get to send the grandkids home with you where you get to panic over them.

This is where people may need to be educated.

Do they go in at 4AM only when it is a dangerous criminal likely to be armed with other gang members and this is the best time to make it happen without casualties on either side? Are 4AM warrants executed on "armed and extremely dangerous" felons, or do they sometimes happen to low risk targets that could easily be scooped up when they come out of their house?

Do they only shoot dogs that attack them or act aggressively? I am a total dog lover with a pit bull who would certainly run downstairs and bark at someone trying to enter the house. But I wonder, when cops move in on a target that may well be armed and use deadly force, can they afford to take the time to fend off a charging dog?

These aren't rhetorical. I can guess at the answers, but I don't really know and would like to. The public may need to be educated.

318 Re: that Anne Rice story in the sidebar.

This is the same Anne Rice who returned to Catholicism in the early 2000's after many years as an atheist (and who then wrote a rather weird novel about Jesus, which drew on the Gnostic gospels and had the child Jesus killing another children in anger - oops!). Then she suddenly realized a few years later that the Catholic church doesn't approve of gay marriage and wrote this butt hurt article about how she could no longer be a Catholic because her wonderful son is gay.

Basically, she's a flake.

Maybe. My brother lives in a very upscale neighborhood in Houston. One day the police went to the wrong house across the street having received some complaint about a domestic disturbance. When the golden retriever came bounding out into the front yard, tongue hanging out like an idiot probably, he was killed. UPS and Fedex deliverymen go entire careers dealing with all sorts of dogs and manage not to shoot a single one. Must be some superpower. Or maybe some fucked up policy/attitude the police have.

A friend was a Marine in Somalia. He bristles at stories of police shooting people who they think may be armed. In Somalia, he tells me, they couldn't shoot at someone who was armed, and couldn't even shoot at someone who was actively shooting at their base if that person was in a crowd. They had to positively identify an armed person who was actively shooting at them AND determine that they had a good chance of returning fire without hurting any civilians around the shooter or they'd have been court-martialed.

I would like the US police to have at least as much concern for killing US citizens as our Marines have for killing random assholes on the other side of the planet, and I'll be goddammed if Marine lives don't matter. It's just way too easy for police to kill people these days. "Department policy" > you.

And I think no-knock warrants should be reserved for very rare cases in which they truly expect an active armed response. We all know about the popo's ability to see into a house via thermals - SCOTUS knocked that down a few years ago when they were doing it without warrants. So when they're serving a warrant, of course they can peek in and see if there's an infant sleeping in the room where they're about to toss a flashbang, if they bother. And yet infants get burned by police flashbangs. They can see if they're about to serve a warrant on 5 alert adults or 1 sleeping person.

Take the recent example of Charles Kinsey in Florida. This is the story of the autistic man with a toy truck and Mr. Kinsey, his caregiver who ran out to tell the police "nobody's armed! He's autistic." and was shot while lying on the ground, hands up. This is no hands-up, don't shoot situation, this is all on video - dude was lying on his stomach, hands above his head, and got shot. The police officer who shot him said he was trying to shoot the autistic man because the cops thought he might have a weapon.

So let's wind that back. You have multiple officers on the scene, each of whom has taken up a firing position with a rifle and a HIGHLY COMPLIANT man is yelling don't shoot there's no weapon he's autistic it's a toy. What would a squad leader in the military do? He'd say "Hey private numbnuts, go over there and check that out. We'll cover you." and if anyone twitched, the squad would open up on those two. And if Private Numbnuts walked up and yelled back "it's a toy truck!" nobody would get shot.

I'm no fan of BLM whatever the B stands for because it's a cheap out that allows the B to avoid introspection and personal positive change, IMO. The police want to make this about anything other than their own behavior, just like the BLM folks do.

320 "Portuguese property tax"

I was in Denmark about a decade ago, on a little scenic boat trip along a canal. Noticed that NONE of the townhouses along the canal that had a splendid view of it had windows facing it.

I asked why that was, and the response was that it wouldn't be fair to all the people that lived in townhouses where it wasn't possible to have a window with such a great view.

I started singing Rush's "The Trees", only my companion got the joke.
