Can you explain why employers must be forced by the state to raise wages if raising wages inspires workers to exert so much more, and so much better, effort that the value to employers of the resulting decrease in employee turnover and increase in output covers the cost of the higher wages? And was Paul Krugman wrong to reason that “there is a fundamental flaw in the [efficiency-wage] argument: Surely the benefits of low turnover and high morale in your work force come not from paying a high wage, but from paying a high wage ‘compared with other companies’ – and that is precisely what mandating an increase in the minimum wage for all companies cannot accomplish”? Harvard University's ill-conceived decision to blacklist students who join off-campus, single-sex social organizations continues to backfire, forcing administrators to make exceptions to the overbroad policyCan you guess where this is going? Care to take a stab at exactly who or what is going to get an exception? The latest one would permit an off-campus women's club to remain female-only without violating the policy that supposedly punishes "gender-based discrimination." This strongly suggests that the real motivation behind the policy is not sex or gender discrimination at all -- it's that the Harvard administration simply doesn't like certain groups and is willing to be as deceptive as is necessary to try to eliminate them.I know...I know...you had no idea there was gambling going on in this establishment. Okay...this is geeky but interesting... Uncertainty Intervals and the Olympics It is quite usual to see examples of the media getting notions of error and significance wrong. But yesterday I saw a story where someone actually dusted these tools off and explained why the Olympics don't time events to the millionths of a second, despite clocks that are supposedly that accurate:Don't like Twitter because censorship just cramps your style? Or maybe the aggressive leftist cant of your Facebook feed is getting more and more unpleasant? Well, here's a new social media company that claims its entrant in the crowded field of unbridled self expression and narcissism is free of political considerations. Gab may be that platform, except it's only in a closed beta right now, so you will have to wait patiently... EPA Watchdog Calls Out Biofuel Boondoggle Biofuels -- really just ethanol -- should be renamed Iowa votes first so let's buy their votes. Even granting expensive oil, it is a colossal waste of farmland and water for a return that is nothing short of a catastrophe. Now of course with cheap oil and American fracking it's even more ridiculous. It doesn't save fuel, it damages engines, it adds complexity to engine design, and it is so obviously a political payoff that I am shocked every day that America doesn't rise up and demand that we get to burn good old cheap gasoline instead of expensive vodka in our cars. And my personal pet peeve? Ethanol takes thousands of acres out of food production. People on the margin of the starvation graph will die. Not in this country, but somewhere, people are dying because of our ethanol policy. Our biofuels policy was meant to boost our energy security while saving the environment, but it fails on both counts. It's a remarkable example of a policy finding a sour spot, and the only stakeholder that benefits from this farce is the U.S. corn industry. So here is a question, how to people keep sane as things keep getting worse and worse around us?
I've tried stepping away from politics, but you can't. The left has intruded so, so deeply into what used to be outside of the realms of politics. I have to keep my mouth shut and pretend that a man in a dress is a woman, and that a couple of guys in an "open marriage" are...married. I have to pretend that espn isn't SJW crap and that all the value signalling of my peers and associates isn't preening shit. I have to pretend that Hillary Clinton isn't an abomination that will be the end of the country and that sexism and racism are the biggest challenges America face... The term "mondegreen" originated with some old Irish folk song, about a handsome young lord who rode off to his first battle and was killed. I forget the name of the song, but it ends something like this...
They carried him back to his castle, and laid him on the green. Due to it being an Irish song, the singer's Gaelic accent tends to make it sound like... They carried him back to his castle, and Lady Mondegreen. Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler... Ask not for whom The Donald Trumps. at August 23, 2016 10:12 PM (0OG8D) 35

I fought the lawn and the lawn won.
Heh. That's been the case with me lately. July wasn't a bad month at all, but August has been brutal. I skipped mowing the lawn for three weeks in a row because I didn't want to set foot outdoors at all, much less do any work out there. When the weeds start growing taller than the grass, you know things are getting out of hand. On Sunday evening a storm came through and cooled things down somewhat. On Monday I looked at the five-day forecast and saw that I would have two or three days of decent weather, then it would be back up to 90 by Friday. I don't like to do yard work after working all day, but it was now or never. So I finally mowed the lawn last night. It was getting dark by the time I finished. He'll be doing the custodial work there, but it's twice as many hours and a $2/hour raise which is a big deal for a 16 year-old. All this talk of "I fought the lawn and the lawn won" reminds me of that time last summer, when my best friends received a notice from their HOA about the weeds in their front yard, with the threat of a $100 fine.
I remembered all the time I'd spent pulling weeds in my parents' yard as a teenager, as punishment for my various youthful indiscretions, and I told my friends, "I'll take care of this." I grabbed their shiny new weed-puller and got to work. I pulled up hundreds of weeds over the course of several hours. By the time I was done, my right hand had swollen to look like one of those surgical gloves Howie Mandel used to pull down over his face and inflate by exhaling through his nose. And their lawn ended up looking like Christian Bale's hair in the movie American Hustle. But the HOA rescinded its warning about the weeds. This time, the lawn did not win. I'll stir the pot with the following proposition: Gibsons are better looking guitars, but don't play as well as Stratocasters. Posted by: Insomniac - Pale Horse/Death 2016 at August 23, 2016 10:28 PM (0mRoj) Gibson necks are typically wider and flatter, while Fender necks tend to be narrower and more arched. This makes them best at different things -- on a Gibson, the strings are farther apart, so it's easier to precisely hit the string you're looking for; on a Fender, it's easier to reach all the strings without having six-inch fingers. Guitars? I prefer to play a Fender Telecaster or Stratocaster simply because of the large radius of the fretboard. Trump came to Roanoke a month ago to do a townhall, about 5K showed up to try to go to it, convention center's main room help 1200, they put another 800 in an adjacent room. Did the local media publicize the Trump event? No. They did publicize that there would be a protest at a certain location and gave the contact info of the organizers. About 30 protesters were out there, but they got more media coverage than Trump/Pence. Back in March, went to a Rubio rally. No media announcement of the event, about 5K came to it on a Sunday night. Again, 30 protesters outside the event. Guess who got the vast majority of coverage on the news that night? Posted by: Tonestaple at August 23, 2016 11:10 PM (VsZJP) I sing all the time, badly. Posted by: CaliGirl at August 23, 2016 11:13 PM (fsFHj) So, little family history here....I have an uncle (by marriage) who can sing nonexistent songs in real time. They have rhymes, verses, bridges, and choruses -- nice little melodies -- and actually make more sense than about 35% of pop tunes on the radio. He doesn't have the greatest voice, but has an ok tenor. But if you try to figure out where that song came from, you can't....he generated it himself in real-time (he actually might have thought of the pieces separately, but the first time the song was ever heard in meatspace was when he sang it [which was usually the last time it was heard, as well]). My dad, by contrast, could not carry a tune in a bucket. Gregorian chants typically have more sense of rhythm or melody. He would oddly recite some things, however, at odd times -- but with the same cadence, each time. Being that my uncle could just invent stuff on the fly, it was assumed that my dad just had this set of weird chant-y things he had dreamed-up that he liked. Then my mom found a copy of this in a remainder bin -- https://www.amazon.com/Gunfighter-Ballads-Trail-Songs-Starburst/dp/B01BLSI420/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8qid=1472009945sr=8-3keywords=marty+robbins+gunfighter+ballads (sorry about chopping w/CRs, but didn't want to risk blog embiggening). With a mixture of amazement, horror, and pity, we soon realized that 80% of the weird chanting stuff he did was trying to sing the songs of this album. Of course, this only made it worse to listen to my dad -- because we then knew how it should sound. Posted by: cthulhu at August 23, 2016 11:44 PM (EzgxV) 326

You know, sometimes that "wacky Japanese" thing can produce interesting results.
From the Wikipedia page for the manga series Upotte!! - "Unlike an average school, all the students are actually anthropomorphized guns, training to one day become a useful weapon, and is divided up into elementary school (sub-machine guns), middle school (assault rifles), and high school (battle rifles/ sniper rifles). They are capable of drawing the weapons they represent out of thin air..." Yes, it's a series about cute girls who also happen to be guns. The main character's name is "Funco", and she's an FN FNC. Aside from that little bit, I know absolutely nothing about the series. But the apoplexy that the series would no doubt induce in any SJWs that stumbled across it (both for the usual fan service, and because GUNS!!!) has got to count for something. Crossing the Japanese stream with the Pop Culture stream, here.
Watched bits of the new "Better Late Than Never" show, with Shatner, Bradshaw, Winkler and Foreman, along with their keeper/minder/facilitator, whose name escapes me at the moment. They goofball around good bits of Japanese culture, food, entertainment and scenery. Interesting mix amongst 'em. Winkler is the wimp in the mix. Shatner and Bradshaw play offa each other, big time. The show goes on next to other Oriental countries. But I think Anna Puma and our other experts on all things in the world of things Japan, would have the more informed opinion than mine. While out walking ran across a biker (peddle class) who locked a front brake on a 35 degree downhill and ended in a ditch full of sharp rocks. Busted helmet, head gashed, mild concussion and broken arm. His big concern beyond crash truck was me getting lots of pictures for insurance. Bike was still in first class condition.
Kudos to the citizens who got there before me and did the first responder aid. Fun part was neighborhood gadfly railing about another dude on a bike who ran into his car and used his body to punch in his rear window. We haven't tried eggs. I've heard they're hard to trap. We put the tuna outside the cage, it didn't eat it. I put a trail cam near the cage. The fox is checking it out. The other thing is I may need to camo the cage better. There is plenty of food also. Rats, bunnies, squirrels, possum, birds. Posted by: CaliGirl at August 24, 2016 12:51 AM (fsFHj) 465
Best way to trap a fox, is to dress well, spend money like water, know what food and wine to order, and be strong, polite, confident, worldly.
Suave and debonair. How you stuff all that into a Hav-a-Hart trap though, I haven't a clue. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 24, 2016 12:52 AM (v5iqM) Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at August 24, 2016 12:53 AM (J3phO) 467
I would think the fox would recognise the trap as, well, a trap... One could wrap a wounded rabbit in bacon and sashimi-grade tuna and the fox still wouldn't go for it!

I've used all the Havahart traps - from the smallest to the Tardis sized. One thing I've learned: hang the bait on a wire. Helps spread the scent. Target vermin will have to step on trigger plate. Peanut butter works well & cats don't dig it. Melon rinds too.

The problem is that foxes are smrt right? So a smart fox isn't going to get any where near a trap when the hunting is good. Why not wait until the weather gets rough and they are a little bit more needy? And beyond that you are never going to catch the whole group in the same trap. It might make sense to just make noise, find their hole and scare them off. I do that with raccoons. Posted by: Bernette at August 24, 2016 12:46 AM (ru2SK) I can't really stomach my own party anymore. Really want to start a new one for the next election,. I'm going to grudgingly help put Trump over the top this time, then get to work building something different, because all of the PACmen, consultant-industrial complex, and party machinery people (such as Priebus) keep thinking that it's all about them and forcing the base to go along with their agenda. We've been trying to fix the Republican Party from within for 8 years, and it's not working. My goal is simple, it's a reform movement, it's the governmental version of a factory reset. We throw out everything but the Constitution and its amendments, and go back to basics. We apply the 10th Amendment harshly. Social issues aren't in the Constitution, thus should be handled by the states. There's no sense in trying to force Alabama to be San Francisco, or vice versa. Instead of one-size-fits-none, you'd have 50 different experiments in democracy. Success would be emulated, failures would be discarded, and we'd all improve for it. Corporate welfare is right out. No stimulus, no bailouts, no subsidies, nothing. Posted by: Cato the Rebel Without a Party at August 24, 2016 01:25 AM (J+mig) 500

He thought it was the feral cat I feed until he got close. It ran the other way into the underbrush. We couldn't find it. It wasn't startled by the tractor either so I'm thinking it lives nearby. Arbalest has a funny thing he does where he explicates something technical and says, "there -- I've helped". It may not be relevant or even accurate, and it's said in an ironic way that recognizes these limitations, but it's well-meant.
There is currently a new paragraph in the Ubuntu Security FAQ (as of this morning) because "I've helped". It's heading is, "There is a security update available that claims it is a "Fake sync from Debian" -- should I be concerned?" That's not the actual question I asked, but is close enough. This joins my "why not https with apt?" query to Clem at Mint as questions intended to improve the community that are granted answers that definitely improve the community. The name's got recognition, Reform is a good word to describe what we want, and the best part is that it's still on the ballot in most states, despite being an abandoned shell. So why not be the hermit crab and move in? Lord Huron -- Fool for Love
OK, that is a weird coincidence -- I just saw Lord Huron at a music festival (Outside Lands). They were -- how to put this gently? -- completely soporific. I couldn't tell if they were tuning up, or actually playing a song. Despite this, 50,000 people were screaming in ecstasy in the audience. I thought forgivingly to myself, "OK, maybe this is like the Beatles at Shea Stadium -- they're playing a great set, but it's impossible to tell because of all the noise the audience is making." So I went off to see another band (who were also mediocre, as every performer at the festival seemed to be). (Thank god I had gotten in for free, or I'd have been pissed.) So, the video embedded in this thread above has finally given me a chance to hear what the big deal is about Lord Huron, heard clearly this time without the screaming. And...they were just as boring and unremarkable on their studio recording as they were live. So -- what am I missing here? Why the hubbub over Lord Huron? It's not that I think they're bad -- it's just that can't discern anything remarkable or memorable about their music. A solid "meh." Good Morning Morons. Today is Wednesday, August 24, 2016. On this day in 1857 the Panic of 1857 began, setting off one of the most severe economic crises in United States history. Like all such economic crashes this one was caused by a stock market bubble. This one in railroads. However, they did not have an "Obama" and a communist congress to make matters worse. The economy was largely recovered within a few years. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at August 24, 2016 05:07 AM (mpXpK) 586

Fox News; no bias here:
Hillary Clinton is riding a summer wave in the polls yet the Democratic nominee has left the campaign trail in recent days to fundraise in America's wealthiest enclaves, potentially giving rival Donald Trump the opening he needs as he works to regain his political footing. The latest poll nationwide is an unreliable NBC poll with Clinton at +5 which is actually down from their previous poll which had her at +6. The last Rass poll had Clinton at 41 and Trump at 39. A statistical dead heat. Fox has never been "conservative" but now it is rapidly becoming just another left wing Democrat PR group. http://tinyurl.com/hwgz2f7 Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at August 24, 2016 05:09 AM (mpXpK) 592

Well, the AF has told them they are full of shit and the Major has every right to keep a bible on his desk. The so-called Military Religious Freedom Foundation cares not a whit about "religious freedom". Their aim is to abolish all freedom of religion and promote atheism and trouble, but mostly trouble. Kansas requires voters to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote. But when registering at the DMVC under the BS Motor Voter Law they are not asked to show this. Kansas had gone in to force they do show it and then the ACLU went judge shopping and got that blocked. They are now asking the appeals court to overrule that other federal judge. There is some serious polling shenanigans going on this cycle. Last month Survey USA did a poll for the Salt Lake Tribune that showed Trump tied with clinton in Utah. There was talk even here about Trump losing the State.
PP just released a poll that shows Trump up by 15 in Utah over clinton. Remember the PP poll was conducted after the worst weeks his campaign ever had and with the media in full blown attack mode on him to boot. Plus this poll was done after McMuffin joined the race, who is polling at 9%. Something is not adding up here. Posted by: The Great White Scotsman at August 24, 2016 06:57 AM (iONHu) 627

Two of the links are depressing reading over the first cup. On the minimum wage story, many of the comments blame everything but the cost increases the owners cited - it must be true that Chicago is hopelessly lost to liberal dementia. And the funds for ransom story, well, the headline should be Congress to try Obama and Kerry for treason. It may be the whole country is lost.

Hi, Bluebell; He likes his new job transporting the Seniors. Son does not go back to school until after Labor Day, but he's up comparatively early every morning during the week to practice with the Cross Country team. Thanks for asking. Are you children back to school yet, or you homeschool? Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 24, 2016 07:23 AM (6HqlZ) 651

Princeton, NJ charges $40 for overtime violations at parking meters. After getting a ticket I went into the Town Hall to explain I lacked evil intent and therefore I should get off, citing James Comey. The fuckers weren't up on current law and swiped my $40 anyway. Where do I go for justice?

I disagree with Mis. Hum. on the sidebar that the Canadians should be charging for their rescue efforts. It sounds like this is an annual event and I haven't read where there have been problems before. If this was a recurring problem, I would agree.

But, now you come to me, and you say: Don Nevergiveup, give me justice. But you dont ask with respect. You dont offer friendship. You dont even think to call me Godfather. Instead, you come into my State on the day I'm in Wasington DC, and you ask me to do Influence peddling ( who do you think I am The FAB?) for nothing. Glad your husband likes that job, Fenelon, and good for your son for getting up early every day for cross-country. That takes real dedication.
I do homeschool, and we haven't started yet. He has 3 outside classes that will start the day after Labor Day. I have the rest of his stuff here, and I've told him that I will be giving him little things to do soon so that he can get a little bit out of the way before everything starts proper. He is doing American History (with me) and American Government (with a wonderful teacher) this year and I am planning lots of field trips. We did a ton when his siblings were younger but he was in a stroller for most of them! Posted by: bluebell at August 24, 2016 07:31 AM (805dc) 660

Had to jump in. As a retired home-school mom of four, it was not hard to separate mom stuff from school stuff, at least for me. Very enjoyable years on the homestead, although I am liking my retirement as well.

I would like to ask prayers for my friend "G" who is the new pastor at the place i had been serving as an interim. His wife is ill with cancer; He just quit in May a better paying job to become a pastor. I think right now he's feeling weak and spiritually low and seems to have the understanding that if his faith was stronger his wife would be getting better. I suggested to him that he not set himself up for a spiritual test in that way. and to be gentle with himself We often feel spiritually weak and low when things are not going the way we'd like, but it's not helpful to have faith in God working in a certain way rather than faith in God for God's self because then we may be set up for disappointment. Anyway, he's a good guy. and a good husband He doesn't need to feel like he's letting his wife down. So hard.
Thx. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 24, 2016 07:47 AM (6HqlZ) 672
