Livestock Auctioneer RappersNot only do intellectuals refuse to abandon politically correct beliefs in the face of contradictory evidence, but simply questioning them can ruin a person's career. Lawrence Summers' tenure as president of Harvard was cut short because he suggested that there are intellectual differences between men and women. As a result of such punitive pushback, some researchers are afraid to investigate differences between male and female brains, which certainly exist. Without a doubt, this reticence is holding back the field of neuroscience. A similar chilling effect can be seen in climatology. The only politically correct belief regarding the climate is that humans are 100% responsible for everything bad that happens and that the Four Horsemen are already marching toward Earth. Questioning that apocalyptic and unscientific belief has resulted in multiple researchers being labeled "climate deniers." Climatology would greatly benefit from the more skeptical approach of so-called "lukewarmers," but far too many are ostracized and demonized.Volleyball Scott Sterling is back and this time, he's playing volleyball. The Republicans knew about the arms for GoFo's program. There were at least 4 Repubs, Mitch, Boner, Mike Rogers, and Saxy Chambliss who had to know per the Intelligence Act rules (these and their 4 D'rat counterparts make up a "Gang of Eight" defined in the Intel Act).
Ol' Mike Rogers (he's retired from Congress, now) actively tried to suppress any Benghazi probe, and they wouldn't let Trey Gowdy actually tell the truth about it, I mean the real purpose. You can be sure McCain and the bunch, my own senator Grahamnesty and the other stooges were all for it. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at August 13, 2016 10:58 PM (DW+jj) 186

Best thing about my high school was there was a lot of mixing among social groups. Everyone did their own thing, but everyone also got together a lot. Stoners, eggheads, hippies, motor heads, jocks, dweebs...you never knew who was going to show up at the diner after the bars closed.

I couldn't hear any numbers.
Posted by: iforgot says God bless Fleegle at August 13, 2016 10:43 PM (5o5ek) I listened to the video. I heard numbers, most of the time. I haven't gone to stock auctions, but I have gone to enough car auctions and farm auctions (many of which are run by the same guys as do the livestock sales). So I guess I have a bit of an ear for it. That video is showing clips of the guys in peak spiel. And some were wearing badges that said "contestant". So I think we were watching excerpts from an auctioneering contest. Usually when selling an item, they will start out sort of slow, until they get the first bid, and then the spiel ramps up to entice other bidders into the fray. In some instances, say with a "mystery box" of tools at a farm sale, they will start the bidding too high, and have to come down: "Now here's a fine box of tools from Alec's shop here...lotta good stuff in it...do I hear ten dollars?. (silence from crowd)...alright, then, do I hear five dollars? (silence from crowd)...OK, let's start 'er at a dollar...do I hear ONE dollar?...right!...Mike from the Huxley colony raises his hand....there's a man who knows a bargain...Now I got one dollar, do I hear two dollars....?" And so on. Point is, if you are there, and interested in the item up for bid, and been following it from the git-go, it's easy to follow the spiel. Posted by: iforgot says God bless Fleegle at August 13, 2016 11:05 PM (5o5ek) Try going to an actual auction. Estate auction, or farm auction, going-out-of business auction. Most towns have one or more auction houses where furniture, antiques, and odd lots get sold one or two days or evenings a week. Auctions are fun to attend, sort of a carnival atmosphere. They can be quite the social event in a small town. Generally these days, in order to bid, you have to register as a bidder, and are given a card with a number on it, and to bid, you raise the card. The auctioneer will have several helpers working the crowd, and once you have been identified as an active bidder (by raising the card), the helper will keep an eye on you, and the other active bidders, and further increases in your bid can often be made by just a nod to the helper. If you want to drop out, an emphatic "no" gesture is a good idea. I'll repeat it: auctions can be a lot of fun, if the goods being sold are of some general interest to you, or its a local sale in your own community. Attend a few, and pay attention, and you will soon find the auctioneer's spiel begins to be comprehensible. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 13, 2016 11:19 PM (oqkO3) 270

Tonight's little wildlife show was a coyote pup, all alone, standing in the headlights, in the level stretch of the gravel road after we leave the upland meadows and track the brook more closely through a long wooded section.
Exact same coat and shape and gait of our Belgian sheepdog beauty when she was about sixteen weeks. Dye that little coyote black, and she'd be our Lulu. God, we miss her. The coyote chorus three nights ago, just before full dark, was a wild one. Three groups, maybe four, spread all along the brook valley, were competing to see who could do the wildest screams, yells, howls, and barks. Seeing this pup tonight made me think the chorus must have included a bunch of young ones. Posted by: the littl shyning man at August 13, 2016 11:32 PM (9v5zv) 314

The 2 people I was still in contact with after high school talked me into our tenth HS reunion. The only one I attended. Now, my thirty is next year too. I haven't heard anything about it. I still exchange xmas cards with one and talk to the other once or twice every year or two. I don't think my graduating class is really into reunions. There were 900+ in my class. I think the smaller classes are more into them since everyone basically knew everyone, for good or bad. I can't remember most of the people and really don't care.

I went to my 10 yr. reunion in '86.
Rode an '83 Aspencade virtually nonstop, San Antonio, to San Diego for the event. A nap on a picnic bench in Deming, NM, and another under a shade tree in Yuma, AZ. It was 117 degrees when I stopped in Gila Bend, AZ. I quite literally took a gas-station water-hose at the pump island, and ran it over my head for a good five minutes, which I'm convinced, saved me from the oncoming heat stroke. While in San Diego for the reunion, I lodged aboard a friend's 27 ft. Reinell sloop for my "hotel"., only about 1/2 mi. from the reunion venue on Harbor Island. Rode the bike to the venue, and parked it out front under the porte-cochere at the hotel, (and it was fully, dazzlingly detailed, shined, armor-all'd), strolled in wearing fine attire, a zillion dollar tan (crossing a series of Western deserts on a bike will do that for ya), and had a good enough time, all in all. Got some quality offers to help rock the boat, but alas, was married at the time, and had to decline. Wife flew to my aunt's place a hundred miles North, a few days later. Her work precluded her being there for the reunion it'self. So, I rode up to Buena Park, collected her there, and made the ride back to San Antonio, via a day's scenic touring of San Diego County. Haven't been to a reunion, since. Even though they send me stuff, I've never worked up the interest nor afforded the expense. Of course, being a Navy brat, I went to nine different elementary schools.... so, I'm not hard-wired to have deeply socialized through my High School days. Happy Dayz, they wasn't. Didn't suck, but wasn't sweet. Just something to endure and from which to proceed. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 13, 2016 11:56 PM (v5iqM) 387

Insomniac, it's interesting. My own sense of humor has grown rather dark as I get older.
What's also weird: when I see/hear other people do dark comedy, sometimes I find it a bit disturbing. But when *I* come up with stuff even darker, I can almost always laugh it off. I once wrote a comedy sketch of me crashing a party held by a woman who didn't like me, and at the end of the sketch I end up being carted out the door by the police with a sheet over my body... and an, er, 'protrusion' sticking up and out that sure looks a lot like a huge knife. Well, I showed this sketch I had written to a counselor of mine... and she couldn't believe I thought it was funny. I tried to explain just the above to her, but it didn't quite take to her. Oh well. Well, my birthday party (shared with my brother and nephew) put me in a rather down mood.
According to my family, Hillary is sleazy and not a good candidate - but Trump is nuts and like Hitler. They believe every damn thing the msm tells them. I thought for a minute "I don't like these people very much. They are political idiots." Then I felt ashamed because they had thrown me a party and given me some nice presents. I love them. But I was happy when the subject moved away from politics. My ex-bil was there (big Dem) and his cousin showed up (was a NYC cop for 25 years and loves Trump). She shouted at us to stop talking politics and we did, because although she is originally from here, 25 years of working the Manhattan beat has given her a certain - assertiveness that shuts up midwesterners. I felt grateful to her. She pulled me aside later and said, "I doubt there's a cop in America who is going to vote for that stinking bitch." Posted by: Tilikum Killer Assault Whale-Skeet Surfer at August 13, 2016 11:30 PM (hVdx9) It started out as innocent experimentation about the capabilities of the blog. If you used [you], for instance, the reader would find his own nic in that part of the sentence -- so, if you said, "....the real source of the problem, of course, is [you], the asshole." -- you could personally insult everyone on the blog by nic. Then there was writing in colors -- you could quote someone in red and reply in green. You could do writing that was white-on-white and only showed up when highlighted (like the hints on the chess thread). Then, someone figured out how to make text [flashing][/flashing]. I went ahead and posted in his comment section: * * * LOL. Just wait 'til this trend of interrupting comes to... the medication commercials on TV we've all had to suffer through: "I had so many worries about my flop sweat dysfunction until my doctor recommended Supercalifragilistimab. Apathy; Mortimer
Several years ago I was extremely ill. After a number of days, the recovery began. As it proceeded, came the realization that I had lost the 'spark' of motivation. Totally gone. Not just the motivation to walk across the room, even to sit upright, nor to flex a finger. Moving my eyeballs was beyond me. Laying there, the thought came that, though I felt dead, I was still alive. Therefore, I must act as if alive, and 'acting' it would be. An attitudinal adjustment would not be sufficient, it would need to be pure will. Willed myself to move. Every move required tremendous will. Will turned out to work like a muscle--the more it is used, the larger and stronger it becomes. After weeks, months, and years the ability to accomplish things became greater. Now in my seventies, I own a business and work sixty plus hours a week. There is still no 'spark,' but I look at what needs to be done and do it. Like Rush Limbaugh says "It is what it is." Knowing where I came from to where I am now keeps me content. This may not apply to your case, but you asked for responses. Good Luck. Posted by: French Jeton at August 14, 2016 12:18 AM (WMvHw) 443

I ought to have better sense than to tell this, but I'm getting old and like all of 'em, I love to talk about all my ailments. My testosterone was low enough that clinical intervention was medically warranted -- meaning the insurance has to pay for it. (300 ng/dl or whatever the units are is the threshold). My doctor decided to test it, saying he could tell -- how, I asked. Well, you're looking a little sissy, he said (he didn't that word, but we don't want to be homophobic and all that). Actually, it's some of the drugs I take with this stupid arthritis can do that, and they had. I really hadn't noticed anything. Things still worked. But after the shots, things improved. Didn't know how much I'd lost. But there are some strange little side effects in that function, the details of which I won't go into. 108 ... I was in high school when Woodstock happened. Unless you were trying to be a hippie (I wasn't) it was no big deal. Just another rock concert. The hype and BS glorification came afterwards. By that time I had already seen about every giant of jazz from Duke Ellington to Dave Brubeck to Herbie Mann. I had been to concerts by The Beatles, the Stones, Blood, Sweat and Tears and others.
I do watch the Woodstock movie every few years. It reinforces my sense of moral and intellectual superiority over the Leftards who thought it was wonderful. Unfortunately, too many of them are now in office. Posted by: JTB at August 14, 2016 12:31 AM (V+03K) 467

Samsung is running one, with a middle aged, Eurotrash, arrogant, elitist snob, wearing a tweed (of course) jacket, and musing aloud, how we Americans tend to use such a device to work, work, work. Even when on vacation, etc. He then asks, rhetorically, "and where as that gotten you", and the scene shows him in Revolutionary War uniform saying "You built your own country, from scratch", then on driving a Lunar Rover, looking up at Earth from within his spacesuit, saying something like, "Making it the most prosperous and influential country in the world"..... and then segues into him stepping out of an all-American 2 story home, planting an American flag in the garden, exchanging greetings with his (black, upper middle class) neighbor, then gathering his NOW AMERICAN family to him, and proclaiming his pride in being an American! That ad, first time I saw it, blew me away. So much frikkin AMERICA, Fk YEAH! in one single ad. Bet it made some libtards haids all 'splodey. So apparently there were reports of a live shooter at a local mall today. Ten people were wounded, trampled as they evacuated the mall. At this time it cannot be confirmed that there actually was a shooter, and there have been no injuries reported due to gunshots.
The mall, FWIW, is a gun-free zone. {smfh} Posted by: GGE Hades of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at August 14, 2016 12:49 AM (vbvxt) 499

Drive up in some rancid old beater, but one that you have equipped with a prominent "Engine Start" button. Arrange to have the engine stall as a group is standing there. Then loudly say, "Start the car, Jeeves!" and right on cue, a skeletal hand and arm reaches out from the center console, and pushes the "Engine Start" button, and slowly withdraws back into the console. One time, back in the '80's, I drove from Calgary to Vancouver in an extremely rusty '76 Datsun 710 fastback. It was simply festering all over, and had a stack of 2X6's in the trunk to keep the back ends of the rear spring from popping through the trunk lid. I had bought it for its engine, which was really good, to replace a blown engine in a Datsun pickup I owned. But I had to get to Vancouver, and the engine swap had to wait, so I drove the 710, which ran great, incidentally. But I had to meet my sister and her family at a snooty restaurant on Granville Island, so I drove down there. They had valet parking, and the valet refused to park it, saying, "I can't drive standard shift." I just laughed, and said, "It's OK, I know how to park it myself." Here's another group of people that need to be bitch slapped into reality.
People who are buying a 200 sq ft tiny house when they have one two year old kid, and another baby on the way. What the fuck is wrong with them? There's barely space for two people, let alone four (including two potentially wild kids). What happens when baby is crying and there's no place to escape the noise. And how do you go about engaging in that activity that made those two kids? There's really no possibility for privacy. This shit is creepy. Tiny house. Yeah.
I lived for seven years aboard a 30 ft. sloop, center cockpit, aft cabin. Maximum beam was 8ft, 6in. Master berth aft, was between full and Queen sized. Four ft. of hanging rod in the the clothing locker. Good amount of drawer and cabinet space, aft. Two burner stove in the galley, with a chicken-sized oven. Augmented with a hot plate. Forward, a vee berth, approximating full sized berth. The head was okay, but you had to back your way in to "sit down", and the head-enclosure was also the shower. Only used offshore, at anchor, but still. The New Dawn was a great home for me and two cats. Even then, it was some tight squeezing to live, day to day. Especially with a heavy armory on board, even then. Now, I've been ashore a decade. And I'm more sure now than ever, that I'll go back to a boat to retire upon the waves. Next one though, will be closer to fifty ft., than to forty. Fvck that "tiny" shit. I want some elbow room and amenities, this time around. Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at August 14, 2016 01:19 AM (GQEs<<< Yeah, I've been watching one of the (now many) tiny house related tv series because the guy who works the construction side of things does come up with some pretty cool, space saving creations. For a lot of the people on the show, these houses can be pretty nice, inexpensive living solutions. A single or couple in 200-300 sq ft isn't too bad. It's tight, but a lot of them have other priorities and just need a place to rest their head when they get home at night. But to bring in kids is asinine. Having so many people on top of each other in such a confined space is going to lead to conflicts and privacy problems you just won't be able to escape. Hipsters always ruin everything. I'm planning to sell off the business and live in a 30 footer. Not retiring - still gotta work - but I'm tired of owning property, and the upkeep on a house is absurd. As is rent of an apartment or a house. Had it to do over again, I'd have started and stayed in one of those. Comfy, cheap, and more than enough for one guy with occasional guests.

Posted by: rickl at August 14, 2016 02:06 AM (sdi6R) Kenny Baker was the guy inside R2D2. You might think of him as a puppeteer, or as a guy in EXTREME makeup (since you never saw his flesh) -- but he was responsible for giving R2D2 a personality and succeeded in doing so. If you were doing it again today, you'd never involve a person inside the robot -- actual robot mechanisms have improved to the point where it'd be stupid. But, just like how the doors to the bridge on the original Enterprise in ST:TOS were moved by staffers, it all looks different since the technology has caught up. You get the lens, and I'll help as I can with the tilts, swings and bellows. I figure the skills I picked up learning the 4"x5" Toyo, oughta translate, just a bit. A great deal will depend on what lens(es) you find, and what emulsion you select. But, I can put a good, well adjusted, sharply focused and properly oriented, image on the groundglass. Might take some teamwork to decide the exposure(s), but I think we can get it done. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 14, 2016 02:13 AM (v5iqM) 613

8x10 may be enlarged. Is the print to be larger or smaller than 8x10? Is your enlarger big enough? If you are a commercial shop (or a real serious photographer), you likely have such an enlarger Larger formats (16x20, 20x24) are usually made by contact print, although if you have (built) such a camera, you likely also have (built) an enlarger. Clairemont. Separately, as I've explained before, if an operation was underway in Benghazi, it was likely done under a "finding" approved by the congressional Intel committees. However idiotic or defensible such an op might have been, it is unlikely to be a question of "legality" under the US system. The loss of a chief of mission under the given circumstances, and the outrageous histrionic mendacity of the entire US leadership about the nature of the attack, and the still unbelievable perp walking of an irrelevant US citizen and even official broadcasts to Islamic target audiences playing to the worst anti-US bigotries and delusions of the mob, stand as disastrous and despicable malfeasance without parallel in our history. For your camera amusement. Years ago I was using a 4x5 press camera borrowed from an acquaintance. Had it on a tripod at a nearby Civil War battlefield, figuring the statue and cannons weren't going to move and I could take my time focusing and establishing the shots. There were a lot of families touring the grounds. I quickly became part of the tour.
Turns out the little kids were fascinated with the camera, never having seen anything like it. I guess all the metal and glass and knobs looked pretty fancy compared to their parents' credit card size digital stuff. The kids weren't shy and started asking several hundred questions. I finally lowered the tripod almost to ground level and let them see what things looked liked under the cloth. The upside down and reversed image had some of them giggling and others trying to figure it out. I had more fun with those kids than I did exposing film that day. I still smile thinking about it. I get a similar reaction from youngsters at the range when I'm using a flintlock. I love it when young people show curiosity and really want to learn. My sister was the opposite of me. Her reaction to hating school was to push really hard to get the credits needed to graduate a year early. But she didn't have my fucked up brain. I'm probably smarter than her in terms of IQ but functionally she is far more capable. They didn't have the term attention deficit disorder yet when I was in grade school but it really applies, even though some now argue it doesn't exist. My mother would probably have been given the label too if she were growing up today. That, combined with the tendency for depression, really messed up my life. Today was one of the bad days. I mostly slept except for occasional trips to the toilet. I simply couldn't think of any reason to be awake. Posted by: Epobirs at August 14, 2016 02:50 AM (IdCqF) 640

I do it alla time, adding essentially nothing to the conversation. Like, for example, this very comment. Chi #534: Worst that can happen is you get ignored. You may surprised, though... I can testify especially to the getting ignored part! Although, it's not necessarily the worst. Make a typo, leave an unclosed tag, or (shudder) be careless about your phrasing, inadvertently saying something suggestive, and you'll feel like you've been thrown to the lions. I used to chuckle at chemtrail conspiracies... and then I started working in aviation. The next time I saw "waffle patterns" over my home town, I knew they weren't following any regular commercial or military flight paths. This was blatantly back-and-forth spraying over the city.
I saw the same thing in Bath, England: a tight waffle pattern that covered the city, and nothing at all outside of the city limits. Does anyone really believe that if our "betters" wanted to spray "helpful" chemicals on us they would check with us first and ask our permission? There's a wikipedia page on Unethical Science Experiments that is excellent. Feeding radioactive food to handicapped kids, unleashing radioactive material over cities, etc. Government spraying chemicals on us is not absurd. TINS: Resident Evil and i were wine tasting around SLO on the Central Coast a few years back, and we pulled into a winery where a station wagon was parked in the lot with a sticker from where i went to college for a few years...
they were the only other people in the room... i remarked on the sticker, and they gushed about meeting a fellow alum (bear in mind, we pulled up in a MB-SLK, i was still in the Army, and looked it and HRH is a *very* nice looking high end blonde (don't ask me how i managed that) they were ho-hum 'bubia, with a Audi wagon. (kids, apparently) all was old home week, until, after they mentioned their class year, i told them that was mine too, and mentioned my name... all the air went out of the room, and the temp dropped about 20*s... yeah, i wasn't in the k3wl kliqu3, but i won at life, and they were pissed off something fierce. Soon we'll be like the Scots, laying outlawed juices on outlawed epipes.
The following will happen: 1. Prices will go up, probably a lot. 2. New taxes will be tacked on. 3. Consolidation, mergers, buyouts etc. will result in only a few big players in the ecig market, the natural result of onerous regulation. 4. A black market will develop, and a new class of 'criminals' to supply it and buy it. 5. Many suppliers will move operations overseas, taking their jobs with them. We've only seen this movie a hundred, nay a thousand times. Let's run it again! Posted by: GnuBreed at August 14, 2016 04:06 AM (gyKtp) Posted by: chemjeff at August 14, 2016 04:06 AM (uAvJJ) 661

OK, let's suppose that airtight proof comes up that Hillary was
directly involved and had direct knowledge and/or directed said arms transactions. Does anything think that the Republicans have the balls to do anything about it that is meaningful? As I recall ojn TV during the hearings one of the Republicans held up a letter/document that was sent o Scankles telling her about it. They had proof then and did nothing. They never intend to do anything. Onbe Republican wanted to charge her with criminal contempt and lying to congress and was blocked by the House leadership. That was fun. Shortly after my last post I had an attack of vertigo and nausea. I barely made it onto the bed, which is the only place in my room where I could lay flat. It would be preferable to grab a pillow and go lay on the floor downstairs as you become acutely aware of any elevation in this state.
Still on the bed but I was able to get to the toilet and back. I'm typing this on a tablet, which is painfully slow compared to the desktop keyboard. Posted by: Epobirs at August 14, 2016 05:44 AM (IdCqF) 687
