Portrait Of Miss Dora Wheeler
William Merritt Chase

Courtesy of MP4!

This is in the Cleveland Museum of Art, although unfortunately not on display. It is also surprisingly large....about six feet by six feet with the frame.

Dora Wheeler became Chase's first student when he returned from overseas study in Munich and set up a teaching studio in New York. At the time, few American artists accepted women as private pupils.

After her course of study, Wheeler joined her mother in launching a successful decorating firm, one of the first businesses in the country to be operated entirely by women. For the firm, she designed luxurious textiles, and the embroidered silk tapestry that fills the background in her portrait references her occupational interest.

100 An interesting and appealing painting. The brightness of the tapestry or wall covering, which first grabs your attention, quickly gives way to the cool blues and earth tones of the lady. The contrast isn't shocking but it is definite. Another contrast is between the partial, sometimes obscure, figures in the yellow background versus the very definite, solid depiction of the woman. It is very effective.

The pose of Miss Wheeler is also interesting. She gazes out at the viewer in a direct, almost challenging, manner. Her posture is relaxed (confident?) and comfortable. There is a sense that she's thinking "If you can impress me, you will find it worthwhile."

I've seen other portraits by Chase and this is probably my favorite. It is evocative on many levels and very effective.

I look forward to the day of high resolution 3D printers for under $1000. Then I can print a near perfect reproduction, brush marks and all, for a few bucks? And holograms of sculptures? Or will old art be phased out, and only pictures of Dear Leader allowed in homes, along with BigBro surveillance?

New Jersey is among a small handful of states that forbid food and beverage in funeral homes. The prohibition, on the books for 50 plus years, was rooted in the public health belief that food and human remains dont belong under the same roof.

I really miss the old wakes and funerals in my family where someone would be the designated 'caterer' and fill the trunk of the car with beer and harder stuff. Last few wakes had big signs that no liquor was allowed and it really put a damper on the gathering. It was always so much more fun to raise a glass.

Typical thug and Libtards response. Thugs say there's no place to ride their (stolen) bikes, so they want Urban Dirt Tracks. And of course the city of --(I forget) wants to use 3 million to build one.

Oh yeah, the grandson of the mayor was arrested for the same crime so ....gotta have it. No laws anymore, thugs are rewarded for crimes. We are lost. But Hillary!!

302 Yeah, the Cleveland Moto-Cross Park. Kind of got derailed when a councilman noted that little kids can't go to the regular parks because, no funds for maintenance, but suddenly "we" have millions for a new facility.

Funny thing, if an entrepreneur managed to navigate the maze of approvals, regulations, permits, impact statements and insurance to start such a thing, the first thing the City Fathers would do is have the police checking the place for stolen bikes. And then would be the noise complaints, and the inevitable injury lawsuit. But with Government, you see, it's all different. Midnight Basketball, 250cc class.

It was exactly what I needed. A leisurely boat ride, on a perfect evening, to a nice place on the water for dinner.

I felt my high BP lowering.

Finally got thru to a "nurse" at doctor's office this morning (after three days trying to return their calls). Shaniqua (that's her actual name) mumbled that my blood glucose is a little elevated, and I'll need to come back in two or three weeks for more labs.

I told her my BP is still very elevated on the med doctor prescribed. She told me to keep my appt. next week and he'll "check on BP then."

I'm so fed up and stressed out. Still trying to get in to see female doc everyone raves about. My BFF who was going to put in a word for me (doc isn't taking new patients), is now dealing with a seriously ill mother.

Gah. Life.

As the snow flies

At a used car lot on the edge of town
A liberal guy and a liberal gal
Buy a Yugo

And they drive with pride

Cause if there's one thing that this world needs
It's environmental friends who'll take the lead
In a Yugo

They say, "people don't you understand
Those suburbans are ruining the land"
But they'll wish they had a full size van one day
They point fingers at you and me
They say we're too blind to see
But do we simply use our heads
And choose another way?

As those small wheels turn
Fifty miles to the gallon
And their knees on their chest
They're gonna save enough gas
For all of the rest
In a Yugo

Then one day on the interstate
They suddenly lose control
They swerve to miss a baby duck
They're squashed beneath a produce truck

But they drove with pride...

And as the crowds drive past a little flat car
You know they saved a lot of gas
But they didnt get far
In a Yugo

And as they're trapped inside
At a used car lot on the other side of town
A liberal guy and a liberal gal
Buy a Yugo....

And they drive with pride...

369 And Insty has a link from NRO--no less--that says the best thing the
#NeverTrump turds could do would be to offer Trump advice--not the
futile, destructive temper tantrum they are throwing right now.

Posted by: RoyalOil at August 15, 2016 10:28 AM (77emZ)

I've noticed that NRO has become terribly schizophrenic about Trump. For every article on that site that roundly condemns Donald Trump and all his works and how he is evil kicks puppies and is destroying the Republican Party (left unexplained is why that is a bad thing), there's another one that touts the Trump policy proposals that *are* conservative and either ignores or pooh-poohs the stuff he says and the politicians he donates to that are, in fact, quite liberal.

This schizophrenia has become so acute that I wouldn't be surprised at some point to read of a massive shootout erupting in the NRO offices between the #NeverTrumpers and the Trump-curious, that leaves many dead and wounded.

Since the President has to personally authorize any nuclear strike, it looks as if the current CIC can pretty much follow any policy he wants to. The whole west coast would be gone before anybody interrupted his golf game. And at that point, what difference would it make?

Now, announcing, that's a whole different story.

No. We were talking long term refilling.
Having to do more than clicking "refil - call Dr" is a hassle.
Generally requires taking off work, scheduling a Dr visit, paying for an office visit, going to pharmacy.
So yeah, on continuing meds, anything more than clicking "refil - call Dr" IS a hassle.

401 Funny thing, if an entrepreneur managed to navigate the maze of approvals, regulations, permits, impact statements and insurance to start such a thing, the first thing the City Fathers would do is have the police checking the place for stolen bikes. And then would be the noise complaints, and the inevitable injury lawsuit. But with Government, you see, it's all different. Midnight Basketball, 250cc class.

407 Willow, you need to take care of yourself as best you can. I'm hoping it's just temporary, maybe your body's way of releasing some of your stress.

I remember in college, a friend's mom was diagnosed with cancer in July and died one month later, right before our senior year. My friend was devastated, naturally, but held it together pretty well.

Months later, in the spring, she was walking across campus on a beautiful day and she just started sobbing uncontrollably. She stumbled back to our house and just cried and cried. It finally caught up to her.

Not the same thing, I know, but I think you know what I mean.

Maybe you should ask your doctor?

--------------------

Almost a year after my father died, I was sitting on a bench in a quadrangle at college. My dad attended the same school. There was some detail about a building that caught my eye, and I thought to myself, "Hmm, I'll have to ask my dad if it was the same when he was here". In the next moment I was reduced to a sobbing mess. Not a pretty picture for a young man.

It was only then that I realized that A. I had not cried since he died. B. I had not yet dealt with his passing.

Years ago, I tried to check my business partner in to Betty Ford Clinic. They refused to take him until he dried out. When I put him in Cedar Sinai for a week, the doctor said "why bother. he's going to be dead in a year anyway".

Sure as hell, even though he hadn't touched a drop for a year, he died 15 months later.
