I was really late to the food thread earlier today, so I hope it's okay if I post these here: - I made myself some spicy garlic shrimp. De-lish, but gotta admit the sauces especially made the meal. - And re Oyster Beer: yup. I feel the same way about coconut shrimp. I love coconut and I love shrimp... but not together. I do like that Bourdain covers the venues down to the street food level, on up to the Michelin rated chefs.
It'd be crazy lotto money, but I'd like to keep a diary of where Bourdain and Fieri go to some of those eateries, and just do a food tour of my own. 'Cause some of that food just looks way too good to pass up. Anyway, ass or not, I give Bourdain some credit for being willing to do some shooting with Nugent as well as some ordinary New Mexico gunnies, who did a good-enough job in positively inculcating Bourdain as to some shooty goodness. While I doubt that Bourdain is as solid on the 2nd as we on this Schmaht Militaruh Blahg, well....I also sense that he's at least now ambivalent on the issue. It's likely that prior to those positive experiences, he was quite the anti-2A sort. Don't you wish all the rest of the libtard media would give us half the consideration that he did by being willing to learn 'bout something totally outside his scope knowledge and experience? So, asshole or not, I cut him some slack, here. Frankly, I think with the right encouragement, some intrepid 2A type could drag him fully away from the dark side. At least, on that topic. I have lived in Columbus, Georgia almost all of my life, and what the graphic calls the "Georgia" is well known here as a "scrambled dog." I've been eating them since before I was born! I've never really seen them outside of Columbus. The best scrambled dogs are at Dinglewood Pharmacy's lunch counter, across the street from the AFLAC world headquarters. Secret recipe chili, sliced cheese, onions, pickles, oyster crackers, and mustard, but no ketchup! Yum!

The Czech hot dog is actually a sausage kolache. The sausage is wrapped with dough and cooked. In the Czech areas of Texas, the sausage is spiced with jalapeno and a slice of jalapeno is placed on top of the dough to differentiate it from regular sausage kolaches.

The depression of 1920 or '21 or whenever it was was something. It was the worst deflation we've ever experienced, in terms of short range drop in price level (inflation caused by WWI spending was YUGE as well).
The deflation of the Great Depression wasn't this bad, at least for the year-over-year metric. I forget exactly, the cumulative drop of GD may have be greater, percentage wise, but the deflation of '20 was the worst spike you'll see on the graphs. And the federal govt's response was actually the opposite of the Keynesian prescription. They cut spending (and taxes), but cut spending more, resulting in a drop in govt. debt -- hell may have paid off existing debt almost. And the Fed, they *raised rates*. And the Roaring Twenties followed. This is the exact opposite of the Keynesian prescription, the thought of doing this would make Krugman's head explode raving about how stupid anyone would be to do this. There's a Chinese bakery I occasionally use that has mini-hot-dogs wrapped in the white, sweet dough that's usually used for barbecue pork buns in dim sum restaurants.

The China hot dog looks like a kolache than the Czech one does. BTW jalapeno kolaches are great, and everywhere in Texas. I miss them in Colorado. Nobody makes them here.

Also watched a handball match today that definitely wasn't the handball we used to play in college. It looked like a cross between soccer and basketball and was rougher than hell. If it had any rule(s) besides putting the ball in the net, nobody was interested in enforcing them. Cool. Don't they have short track bicycle races sometime this week? They're pretty intense too. dill pickle relish is good. There's a great place in OH that makes pickles called Frog Ranch. They make a dill pickle w/ hot peppers that blows away any other spicy dill I've ever had. They pack some heat. Not always easy to find, but worth seeking out.

The place you want to go to at Ohio for hotdogs is Dan's Dogs at Medina. They do hotdogs umpteen different ways, including bacon wrapped around the dog with melted cheddar cheese and anything else you want on the dog. It is a small out of the way place, but larger than Waldo home of the GR Tavern and its great fried bologna sandwich.

Those talking about Tony Packos in Toledo -- go to the original. Beautiful bar. L several nice beers and lots of things besides dogs. But the dogs are good. I see there's an argument over the effects of high end gymnastics. It does indeed delay puberty. There's some that claim it ought to be banned, to put young girls through this.

The really iffy, unknown case is indeed if the winner of the electoral college dies after the electors have voted, but before Congress officially counts and certifies them.
The winner of the presidential contest would then be dead. Congress could declare votes for the dead guy are invalid and not counted. There is precedent for this, but not for the winner, with back in the past, COngress rejecting a number of votes for a candidate who had died. He wasn't the winner, so it didn't matter. Does majority of the EC college mean majority of *valid votes*. If that's the case, then the loser would win. Or do they throw it to the House....and all that. They documented the enumerated powers of the Federal Government in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution. Enumerated means "on a list" -- the Founders explicitly said that the Government could do this list of things AND NOTHING ELSE. There are about 68 of them. When it came to adopting the Bill of Rights (first 10 Amendments), the big debate was whether spelling out bright lines about what the Feds CANNOT do would be read as infinitely expanding the 68-or-so things that the Feds explicitly CAN do. The compromise reached was that there would be a Bill of Rights, but among them would be "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." and "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." Both should have been prefaced with, "In case you retards can't read...." Fast forward 200+ years, and the out-of-control Feral Government of the US thinks that the only boundaries to their ever increasing fiefdoms are in the first 8 Amendments to the Constitution, and they're perpetually trying to weasel-word them down to minimal hindrances. There is nothing in the Constitution that would allow the Federal government to regulate agriculture, labor, wage-and-hour laws, healthcare, the environment, great swathes of land in western states, education, air travel, space travel, diseases, or communications. The Founding Fathers thought about several of these things and said that great masses of politicians would only fuck them up.....and so they have. Thursday, my Mom was diagnosed with cancer. I am terrified and heartbroken and need to cry, though I haven't yet. It's supposedly very treatable, and I know a lot of people beat it. But, the odds haven't been with us so far, so I hate to look at the odds. She has an MRI tomorrow to see if/how much it has spread. I am so scared, I can't even speak. Mom had an annual mammogram last Monday, and they found a suspicious spot. She had the same suspicious spot last year, but after the follow up ultrasound, they determined it was nothing. Well, this year, there was the same suspicious spot, only bigger. So, they called her back for a followup. So, our first thought was "We've been through this before it's probably nothing, just playing it safe." Then, she gets the call that they need to biopsy it. Still, we figure the odds are in our favor, because most biopsies come back benign. Not this. They told her it's treatable and slow-growing. But, they also said she will probably have to have chemo, which sounds like maybe a little more serious than treatable and slow-growing. They took other ultrasounds and didn't see anything, but who knows. Anyway, she has her MRI, then Friday she is meeting with surgeons/oncologists about the plans. I mean...I know a lot of people beat this cancer. But, everytime I've thought positive so far, I've been let down. I hate to do it again. God, I hate cancer. It's an open question. One view is that, yes, the President-elect is the winner of the EC vote even before they are officially counted and certified. And Congress has no discretion. If the winner is dead, then the dead winner must be officially certified. Then the 20th kicks in. The other view is no, this doesn't count. The committee reporting on the 20th Amendment did endorse the former view, apparently, saying the president-elect is the one with the majority of electoral votes or the winner if it's thrown to the House. Back from a week in Florida in a RV. Saint George Island state park was ok. The mosquitos were dense. You couldn't step outside without being swarmed. We were covered in bites the first day plus it was about a 1/2 mile walk to the beach from our campsite. We don't tow a vehicle with our Motorhome so we have to walk everywhere once we get where we're going. We spent 5 nights there then went to Pensacola for 2. We like Pensacola better. Never got a mosquito bite and the beach was a much closer walk. Sand was whiter, finer, and wasn't hot to walk on. The water was cleaner, bluer, and clearer. Plus it's over 4 hours closer to drive to. We did see dolphins at both places everyday.

I was looking at some of the history of this EC vote disputes. There were some lulus of elections after the Civil War. One was 1872.
Grant was running for re-election, and there was a lot of corruption. A #NeverGrant movement in the Repubs sprang up and split off, calling themselves the "Liberal Republicans" (as opposed to Radial Republicans) and nominated Horace Greeley. The Democrats endorsed Greeley, hoping to defeat Grant. Now, Greeley died after the election but before the EC met. Grant won big, and was the clear winner of the electoral votes based on the popular election. The Greeley electors split their votes, voting for either other Democrats or for the Liberal Republican VP nominee. Three Greeley electors cast their votes for the dead Greeley. Now, Congress *rejected* these three Greeley votes as invalid, but included the votes in the total number of votes. They also threw out the entire votes of Louisiana and Arkansas because of "irregularities", and did not include them in the total. They had voted for Grant, who had won anyway and this made no difference to the outcome. So, there is precendent, but pre-20th Amendment precedent for Congress throwing out votes for dead candidates, but those votes were cast after the electors knew he was dead. Hee-Haw ran for 23 seasons, preceding and outlasting all of those sitcoms.
I doubt culture had much to do with it so much as the core cast getting old and not rotating in younger talent. Red Skelton was on from 1951 to 1971. He was 58 and likely ready to cut back his schedule a bit. Beverly Hillbillies ran 9 seasons. I think they'd done all they could with it. Plus Irene Ryan was feeling her age and died just two years after the last season. The Andy Griffith Show ran 8 seasons, with Don Knotts leaving for one while seeking lead roles. The show ended because all of the leads were ready to move on, not because the network didn't want it anymore. Remember 'Mayberry R.F.D' the spin-off show they tried to keep things going without the core cast? The other earlier spin-off, 'Gomer Pyle' jsut got too weird in its persistent refusal to make any reference at all to the Vietnam war and any suggestion that Gomer and the rest might be deployed at some point. In 1964, when the show started, that could be accepted but by the fifth season it was a bit absurd. CBS did the rural purge but mainly because it was getting stale and losing ground to ABC and NBC. All of the newer shows you mentioned were on CBS. There was room on the dial for other stuff and as I recall, Hee-Haw never ran on the Big Three networks. I think what I am going to start doing is leave a bottle with only about 2 or 3 inches left in it on the counter and keep a stash hidden away in the upper cabinets. When they mooch away the 2 or 3 inches I'll tell them that's all.

The video of her freezing is interesting in the way her SS agent jumps in - even if she just had a moment where she blanked out (like when you walk into the kitchen and forget what you went in to get/do), the way the SS agent immediately jumps in and reassures/prompts her seems to indicate he does this often. There's no pause to let her collect her thoughts, give her a chance to right herself. That "New York" hot dog contradicts my on-site experiences. Basically. like Gaul, New York hot dogs come three ways: Mustard & Saurkraut; Mustard & Onions (sauce); and Mustard an dSweet Pickle Relish. My personal favorite tought was the Jewish deli dogs with the crunchy grilled all day skin and with mustard and potato salad. Graphic Designers tend to be idiots.
