Thread below the Gardening Thread: Oppression Chic [KT]

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

Huxley.jpg

Man, it is hard to get most people involved in academia to discuss this. I have had a few brief, civilized exchanges with "friends of friends" on Facebook about this subject. Lucky that they were civilized, I know. They seemed ready to bowl me over with the amazing new concept of "white privilege", which totally dominated their thinking. With the zeal of ardent advocates, they seemed interested in my views at first. Then they seemed to go silent in face of examples like some Malkin gave. Wish it were easier to keep them engaged and inspire a little curiosity about their dogma.

Got any ideas for me?

Re: Ginny Thrasher, the Olympian who just won the Air Rifle competition.

She was born in Rome, NY. Her father was career Air Force, and she began shooting in high school, after a hunting trip with her father and brothers.
She graduated from high school in Virginia and after being recruited by numerous NCAA colleges with shooting teams, chose WVU because it is a perennial powerhouse in the shooting sports.

She is not a native WV.

19 Pavlov is not just for dogs. With people it applies also.

There is an old science fiction short story, stumbled across in a second hand story, called "But I Don't Think!" where slavery is practiced in space. The slave crew member is maliciously dumped on a world. So he schemes to travel across space to rejoin his ship even pretending to be a free person. He gets back to the ship where he is welcomed back before being tortured. And he is happy about the punishment because he is home.

I am apparently the only bad parent who got the notarized signature approving her application (under 21). My only warning was that she should try different types and brands to find out what she was most comfortable and accurate using. Baby is counting the days until she gets to Peoria and can attend 'Ladies Nights' at local ranges. So, big thank you to Jen.

Have you ever, after laying out facts and figures and examples on some socio-political issue, gotten someone to say "I was wrong. I've changed my opinion."?

I don't mind the term, adore. I think it can be apt. There is a certain blind worship that seems to attach to the latest things to come along. Latest things of all sorts, both good and bad.

Like reeds bending and bowing in the breezes, neither committing this way or that, just being pushed and pulled in whatever direct the latest to come along is going.

Adoration is not the same as love. It may very well be shallow, meaningless, ultimately nothing.

For some reason, The 100th Monkey popped into my mind this a.m. in the context of SJW's.

For those who may not be familiar with it The 100th Monkey posits that certain behaviors (or beliefs) will spread widely throughout a society if only a certain critical number of individuals adapt that behavior.

Was a popular meme in the '80s among hippies and self-help guru types. The irony of the fact that they self-identified with monkeys was lost on them. The other irony is that the value of the particular behavior shared by monkeys was not rigorously questioned (sweet potato washing = good, poo flinging = bad).

Maybe there's some of that mindset at play with the current social media fads in regard to white privilege, etc.

50 I've told this story before, but it seems appropriate once again:

A friend of mine houses exchange students from Europe. Friend is a strong Christian and a firearms enthusiast, so the ignorant students who live with him get a strong dose of evangelism and also, he takes him out to a local gun range for a day of shooting. Don't know about the evangelism, but the trips out to the range are generally well-received; everybody has a good time.

One time after a day on the range, where a couple of Spanish students got to see American "gun culture" up close and personal, met a number of shooters, saw a variety of weapons being fired, and saw the obvious camaraderie of the range, one of them remarked to my friend: "now I see why Americans don't lose wars."

It's something of an old answer to a problem with two very different goals. Namely, how we get guys who are going to be pro athletes the skills they'll need at the next level, while at the same time giving guys who will never be pro athletes the education they desire.

The schools aren't going to stop pretending there are two different tracts at work here, because their bottom line depends on it, but the right answer of course is to stop pretending the guys who aren't scholars, are.

Huxley was pretty much a genius in foreseeing "soft oppression".

That seems to be the phase we're in right now-

"soft oppression" where you're rewarded for falling in line no matter how stupid the order/idea is

as in "White Privilege".

But, as we've seen (ala BLM), the Left can never wait to get to the Orwellian part of oppression-

the "boot stamping on a human face forever" part,

cause that's the fun part.

I honestly do believe that there is.

A culture in motion tends to remain in motion in the original direction of travel.

A deviation in direction indicates a force is acting upon it.
It may be economic, religious, culture, or whatever.
But a change is only caused by a force.

How much tinfoil you can afford determines what you identify as the force or entity.

82 I hope you've figured out by now, that, as hard as it may be for someone older to believe, Academia has as a whole become totally corrupt, to the point where everyone of any consequence who is involved in it understands the corruption and realizes that their only chance of continuing to ride their own personal gravy train is for them to support the corruption as wholeheartedly as they can, and to also diligently work to silence anyone who threatens the corruption.

University professors and administrators are the most corrupt and immoral persons in the world today. They are worse than criminals, they are worse than drug addicts, because those persons probably don't know better. The university professionals know better, but they support the destruction of society because they personally profit from it.

We have reached the point that our very survival may depend on the closing and disbanding of every university in this country, at least for a few years, while some new system is allowed to evolve.

It is a very hard thing to do.

I was a liberal in my teens and early twenties and didn't become a full conservative until I was around 30. In the circles I ran in, there was tremendous pressure to be a liberal.

In fairness, I was born in 1960, so the liberal positions that I held in, say, 1980 are considered conservative today. It's not so much that I left liberalism, but that liberalism left me.

Most of my formerly liberal friends are now conservatives. I'm not the only one who liberalism left behind.

America doesn't win wars, either. Not these days.

We just get embroiled in them on poorly thought through strategic premises and then stay in them, spending and bleeding to ineffectual result. Because neither victory nor defeat are considered acceptable policy options, and no one is prepared to rethink the faulty premises.

If you want to re-engage them:

Ask them what they want you to do. (Voting doesn't count.) Do they want you to quit your job and insist that you be replaced by a member of the oppressed classes (if so, which one?), turn over the deed to your house to a random Black person, the same for your car, fire a white male in your employment and replace him with a Black female employee? What do they want you to do?

Right. If you're in a position where you can be persuaded by actual evidence submitted by the other guy, you already agree with him on most things, anyway.

The book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas Kuhn goes into great detail about this sort of thing. Basically, the way that a new paradigm gets established is not by persuasion, but by adherents of the old paradigm dying off.

I love nature, I've camped/canoed/kayaked/backpacked all over the US and parts of Canada. Sound forest management isn't a liberal issue. Since we've been managing our resources, there are more forested acres in the US than there were in the mid-1800's. And that isn't The Gov managing them, it's paper and wood companies who are responsible. US Forest Service policy of fire prevention is precisely why the west is on fire every summer. Zero harvest causes an incendiary buildup of blow downs and dead standing trees. had the opportunity to drive through a Wyoming fire 3 weeks ago. Watched a Chinook drop it's bucket on a ranch that was about to go up in smoke. The entire valley was engulfed in flame and smoke.

Not only paper companies, but homeowners, too. The suburban development where I live was built in the mid-50s on what was once farmland. There probably weren't many trees there, and what few there were would have been cut down to build the houses. When the development was new, it must have looked sterile and barren. But now, 60 years later, it is filled with trees of all kinds, some of them huge.

Most of the liberal yuppies I know have very little on hand by way of provisions. They spend a ton of money on food, but it's on absurdly expensive foodie food. And they're obsessed with buying "fresh" food. So quantities are limited. You might find a can or two of imported foie gras and a bottle of absinthe.

Also, the whole idea about pirating supplies from the unarmed rests on the presupposition that one will not encounter anyone else who is an armed pirate looking to do the same thing in the same place at the same time. A risky bet.

155 The sophistry known as white privilege is designed to shut you up, after more than fifty years of calling you a racist, the left realizes your have grown tone deaf to the charge. The sophistry also empowers non-white people to behave in racist ways and/or is a crutch for whatever the grievance of the day is. I inform everyone who tries it on me that they have just closed off all discussion and excluded me from any possible further discussion. I will adamantly stand in opposition to such people and seek out people who want to solve the issues facing us, not further entrench them.

In essence, don't allow the left to define the problems and define the terms used to do so. This is how they constantly advance their agenda and acquire power.

The dirty little secret is no problem in this country can be solved without everyone working together for a common goal. It was primarily white people who started the abolitionist movement, although there were plenty of free non-white people in the movement. It was primarily Christians, both white and non-white, that founded and drove the abolitionist movement. Many of these people died during our greatest failure {the first time Americans could not resolve our differences short of all out war}. Many of their children are responsible for the civil rights movement and civil rights legislation.

The profiteers of the race industry and the leftist leadership have no interest in people coming together. They do everything they can to drive us apart and keep us from talking and listening to each other. The sophistry of white privilege is just one of many tools in their arsenal.

164 Yep - it's Marxism. That's their worldview and starting point, so let's start there.

Marxism stresses, if you'll permit the shorthand, the 99%. These include the army privates who get killed in war, the immigrants who built the railroads, the slaves on the plantations, etc., to cite some extreme examples of oppression of the little guy. All givens, for the sake of discussion.

My question, then, is So what? Let's extol Marxist theory (again, for the sake of argument) and accept the above premises and judge the goals of communism as desirable. How is society served by granting medical degrees to people, oppressed as they are, to students who can't pass the exams?

Isn't the whole point of the International Siblinghood of Workers supposed to be about the betterment of all of us? How does this misguided sense of equality - even if we justify the motives - bring about the paradise that Marx envisioned?

(Try that. No attribution sought.)

It gets in the way of their perceived concepts of equality. It interferes with their goals. You can't both have liberty and everyone compelled to be nice to each other. 203 "I wrote it confident that I was correct, and I left the post having been convinced by force of argument and evidence that my original thoughts were intemperate."

But you (and hopefully, most of us here) are a rational person who has taken the time to think out your positions and personal code. But emotional appeals are so much more gratifying.

When you are young you're bombarded with liberal platitudes by pop culture, which are reinforced in school. Liberalism is so much more appealing on the surface than being locked into boring responsibility for yourself and your own family.

It feels great to virtue signal - you feel good about yourself and part of a cause bigger than yourself - without personally giving up a damn thing. Most of your peers will applaud you, as opposed to being considered one of "them". You're an insider, and there are enemy outsiders, adding to the appeal.

It's like being part of a gang that validates you and makes you comfortable with your weaknesses. And you don't even have to go through the painful process of being "jumped in".

Bottom line, I have found that you will never convince them that they might want to rethink things a bit. My efforts over the years have led to uncomfortable situations. I knew they were liberals and accepted it, I wasn't emotionally vested and didn't look at them as bad or evil people. Not so much the other way around.

224 With all due respect to Bernette, I think she's an outlier. Remember back in 2012, when all of the angry PUMAs were going to sit out the election because Hillary! had been cheated of her lawful birthright, and this would be the reason Romney would win? Good times, good times.

Yeah, I'm not buying it. One possibility for the R Party, is if black people decide to sit home, but really, I'm not counting on that either. They do love their shackles, as administered by the Democrat Party. Some of them might not vote with the Scoamf off the ballot, but not enough of them to make a difference.

In the end, either Trump brings in large swaths of white working class types, or this election goes the way these things go.

As an added bonus, they don't ever have to take responsibility for their actions, since they're living under soft tyranny. It's a win-win-win for them.

Have you ever, after laying out facts and figures and examples on some socio-political issue, gotten someone to say "I was wrong. I've changed my opinion."?

---------------------------

I've done it twice on socio-political issues and I know someone else who did it once. I also did it about OJ and about the Menendez brothers.

I think you have to be dealing with people who trust you to begin with, though.

Socio-political issue #1 was something about family or marriage as an institution, I can't remember what, it was so long ago. I was arguing with a guy who had simply formed his opinion on his own and had never listened to anyone who was interested in discussing it intelligently. I gave him a bunch of counter-examples from nature and he said he was going to have to rethink his ideas.

Socio-political issue #2 was the whole damn liberal argument, back in 2008 when Hillary was running. This girl was a mad Hillary supporter, and I kept feeding her ammo for her online rants against Obama. At some point she realized all my sources, hence all her material, was from Fox news and conservative media. I kept asking her why the NY Times wasn't telling her this stuff, why liberal media never touched this stuff. She was enraged by people calling her racist because she preferred Hillary to Obama, and when I introduced her to the term "identity politics" she came around to the whole phony liberal victimology game. She also vomited when Hillary went to work for Obama. Now she hates liberals and conservatives alike.

The friend of mine who changed someone's mind was about Obamacare. My friend said "Well, just go online and read up on it. You'll see, it's full of problems." The dingbat got back to her and said "Yeah, you're right, it is! I'm going to keep voting Democrat anyway."

For the murder things, I related the issue of guilt to the situations of the people I was arguing with. They changed their minds.

Posted by: iforgot says God bless Snorky at August 06, 2016 01:14 PM (5o5ek)

283 I tried to introduce my cousin to role playing games (Fantasy Hero in this case). She was very interested, being a fan of fantasy fiction and movies. So we sat down with a few other people and started up with a new character for her and... she was helpless. She was unable to make even the smallest decision. Where do you go? I dunno. What do you do here? I dunno. What do you say? I dunno.

It was like when faced with a challenge she was utterly incapable of speculating and imagining what to do, or how to act. Like she was scared she'd get it all wrong.

This woman is very intelligent and capable, but when faced with the ability to decide and do literally anything she wanted, she was paralyzed. It was too much for her to handle.

I think a lot of people are like that. 50% seems high, but at least some.

We once had to do a real emergency main ballast blow to get to the surface. Because nothing else was going to get us there. It was...exciting, and very loud.

On the surface heading into Kings Bay, GA we were shadowed by a Soviet AGI a few hundred yards to starboard. They called them fishing or research ships, but they were actually spy ships. I was a phone talker sitting in an after hatch watching a crewmember on deck when I stood up and gave them the finger. Stood there like that for a few minutes. So, somewhere in the Soviet navy archives is a photo, and maybe video of me.

From the WSJ:

SOWETO, South Africa - In a far corner of the high school that was once an incubator for black South African luminaries and their children, dozens of students killed time smoking marijuana and nyaope, a crude concoction of heroin and household chemicals.

Yet, 22 years after Mr. Mandela was elected president on a promise to lead all South Africans to prosperity, Orlando West is failing and so are its students: Roughly half drop out before graduation. Classes are routinely canceled because teachers stay home - so often some students say they have finished a semester without completing a page of their workbooks.

Despite the many gains since the end of white-minority rule in 1994, "the education system in South Africa has changed from bad to worse," said Benjamin Chiloane, an Orlando West English teacher, whose two-decade teaching career spans South Africa's democratic transition.

Student achievement is falling even as education spending has climbed to a fifth of South Africa's budget, a larger share than defense or health care expenditures. The country spends a greater percentage of its gross domestic product on education than either Switzerland or Japan.

So how would they say it in Greek?

"Misanthrope" is someone who hates humanity, you can see the Greek roots misein + anthropos, so perhaps something like "misoiko" or "misoikos"? Aargh, that sounds bad, not sure what it would be.

325 #155 Very good. When they bring up white privilege/slavery, give a quiet sympathetic nod and say, Yes, one of the saddest facts about slavery in America was the fact that the first slave owner was a Black man named Anthony Johnson, who, in 1654, sued to convert his Black indentured servant, John Casor into a slave.

Anthony Johnson sued Robert Parker in the Northampton Court in 1654. In 1655, the court ruled that Anthony Johnson could hold John Casor indefinitely. The court gave judicial sanction for blacks to own slave of their own race. Thus Casor became the first permanent slave and Johnson the first slave owner.

Whites still could not legally hold a black servant as an indefinite slave until 1670. In that year, the colonial assembly passed legislation permitting free whites, blacks, and Indians the right to own blacks as slaves.

By 1699, the number of free blacks prompted fears of a Negro insurrection. Virginia Colonial ordered the repatriation of freed blacks back to Africa. Many blacks sold themselves to white masters so they would not have to go to Africa. This was the first effort to gently repatriate free blacks back to Africa. The modern nations of Sierra Leone and Liberia both originated as colonies of repatriated former black slaves.

However, black slave owners continued to thrive in the United States.

By 1830 there were 3,775 black families living in the South who owned black slaves. By 1860 there were about 3,000 slaves owned by black households in the city of New Orleans alone.

Absolutely and I would add this;

4) You must prove that you can read, write, and do simple arithmetic before being allowed to go to college on student loans and Pell grants.
5) Put a limit in place on how much a student can borrow for his/her education based on a formula using expected future earnings. If you want a bachelor's degree in English or Psychology , which lots of folks do, then you can borrow X dollars based on the fact that you will be working at McDonald's or Kohl's. I, personally, know 2 young women working on Doctorates in English--because it's "their bliss", and both are racking up enormous debts. The late fiance's daughter has student loan debt from a BS in Psychology that she can never repay--she is working as a receptionist at a Laser Hair removal/Botox business.

I know other cities have similar experiences, but here in St. Louis we do sorta expect some amount of loyalty from the players who come here. If you earn it from the fans, it WILL stay with you the rest of your career.

David Freese is with the Pirates now, and every time he came to the plate in St. Louis this year, he got a standing ovation.

Jason Heyward, on the other hand, was roundly booed.

There are still Rams players, including Kurt Warner, and several members of the team that won the Super Bowl here who are still loyal to the city, and it causes some amount of frustration/sadness for them that their team, and the league, are the ones who are heartless bastards, who care about nothing but money.

Then in two weeks you will notice your unique vocabulary repeated, recognized because you struggled somewhat to contrive it, such as "hot as hippo balls in high summer" as if that idea is their own. As if it were not you who expressed that. As if you won't recognize your own unique phrasing.

So does that thing on the corner of the borg cube that muslims worship, if you play nice and give the 'correct' answers on your rorschach ink blot test.
I thought it was modeled on your average car tire (last pic on the linked article). Turning on the red food lights doesn't change the wide angle view much.

350 I linked this last night in the ONT but it seems like this is another appropriate thread for it.

Because apparently billions of taxpayer dollars since the 1960s hasn't been enough.

Interesting list of names, including a 22 year old named Xaviera cited for prostitution. Have to wonder about the parents who chose to give her that notorious name. Were they surprised by her career choice?

352 The whole racket is un-Constitutional under the Equal Protection clause. You can't fix history on the backs of the living--all you can do inflict more discrimination.

In California, Hispanics outnumber whites, yet have preferences, affirmative action and set-asides. There's a name for that when the largest racial group has preferences written into law;

"Jim Crow".

That's what it's been about all along. Read the demands from BLM. It's basically a new set of Jim Crow laws, but this time the whites will be playing the oppressed. Color blind is just yet another failed conservative principle, since nobody wanted to play except stupid white people.
