That the river is everywhere at the same time, at the source and at the mouth, at the waterfall, at the ferry, at the current, in the ocean and in the mountains, everywhere and that the present only exists for it, not the shadow of the past nor the shadow of the future.” Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man. To ancient Chinese fancy, the Milky Way was a luminous river, - the River of Heaven, - the Silver Stream. Lafcadio Hearn “Life is like the river, sometimes it sweeps you gently along and sometimes the rapids come out of nowhere.” Emma Smith “…how it would be nice if, for every sea waiting for us, there would be a river, for us. And someone -a father, a lover, someone- able to take us by the hand and find that river -imagine it, invent it- and put us on its stream, with the lightness of one only word, goodbye. This, really, would be wonderful. It would be sweet, life, every life. And things wouldn’t hurt, but they would get near taken by stream, one could first shave and then touch them and only finally be touched. Be wounded, also. Die because of them. Doesn’t matter. But everything would be, finally, human. It would be enough someone’s fancy -a father, a lover, someone- could invent a way, here in the middle of the silence, in this land which don’t wanna talk. Clement way, and beautiful. A way from here to the sea.” Alessandro Baricco, Ocean Sea “A river seems a magic thing. A magic, moving, living part of the very earth itself.” Laura Gilpin “A good river is nature's life work in song.” Mark Helprin Water slides are suppose to be cooling and fun. Child dies riding tallest water slide in the world. Speaking of water. The ONT STRONGLY RECOMMENDS that you do not try this with your significant other. If Warners/DC really is serious about making good movies in the DC Extended Universe, there's one person they need to put in charge of their comic book movies.
Bruce Timm. Seriously, the animated series he's been part of are all excellent, textbook examples of how to do super-heroes right. They won't, though. "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" which is the GREATEST BATMAN movie of ALL TIME, didn't make money. So they will continue jerking off into the paper hats they made. Now we know what happened to Andrea Tantaros. Randy Roger was hittin' on her, too. According to the Daily Mail, he wanted her to "do the twirl" for him, give him hugs and all that. She refused, then filed a complaint.
That's when she got taken off The Five and put on Outnumbered. It escalated further when she wouldn't back down and drop the complaints. There's enough women telling these tales that I do indeed believe Roger is Randy Roger. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at August 08, 2016 10:36 PM (DW+jj) 25

Fuck me dead. What is this shit? Bring back Maet's ONT. This place is falling apart. Posted by: Bring back Maet at August 08, 2016 10:36 PM (J+ajx) "This shit" is peeps stepping forward to try to fill the shoes of a Giant. Perhaps they eventually will, perhaps they won't -- but they're stepping up and swinging for it...and, for that, they deserve respect. Maet has left the building, and whinging about it isn't helpful. Applauding when things are done well is appropriate; specific targeted guidance is appropriate; generalized bitching -- not so much. Posted by: cthulhu at August 08, 2016 10:53 PM (EzgxV) 121

Do I duracoat it? Before you do, at least get a quote for what it'd cost to restore it to, quite frankly, better than new condition. http://www.turnbullmfg.com/ Just absolutely the best there is, but certainly not cheap. Still, it can't hurt to get the quote and compare it to coating job. Oh, and on that subject, don't go DuraCoat. Nothing really wrong with it, but the Cera Kote process is far more durable and attractive. Good luck, whichever route you choose! Posted by: OneEyedJack at August 09, 2016 01:04 AM (kKHcp) Well, if Turnbull were to case-harden the receiver, polish and blue the barrel and other bits, fit some pretty wood onto it, then she'd not be so Plain Jane anymore, right? Don't tell your wife what it'd cost, though. Seriously though. Try the Cera-Kote "Gun-Blue" coating. It comes pretty close to looking like a first class polish and blue. Very deep blue/black finish. Pay your dues with the polishing job first, of course. Then, seeing it's just a training gun, install a Williams peep sight onto the receiver, and find a reputable gunsmith, one known to the SASS types in your area, to polish and slick-up the action and to give the rifle a truly good, crisp trigger. Take the wood down to bare, and build up a good oil finish on the stock and fore end. Everyone thinks you have to use Linseed oil on a gunstock, but frankly, Tung oil works fine too. You'll end up with a hunting-fighting worthy, slick and fast Marlin, with a tough, durable finish on the metal, and a tough, repairable finish on the wood. Be sure to install a Q.D. type sling stud into the stock, and fix it's counterpart onto the barrel band on the fore end. You'll end up making it an heirloom in it's own right, just because of the love and labor you've put into it. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 09, 2016 01:24 AM (v5iqM) 506

About Clock Boy.
I'd love to sit him at a workbench, and present him with: 1. A Heathkit project for a simple tabletop radio. 2. The full builder's instruction book for said Heathkit radio. 3. A selection of soldering irons, solders and fluxes. 4. A full bench of tools to include clamps, tweezers, spools of various sizes and types of wire, clamps, wire-cutters, articulated magnifying lamp, breadboard squares, etc. 5. A full three-day weekend's worth of time, and finally: 6. No outside help, advice, input or other coaching, whatsoever. And then, it's going to be all "Okay, Achmed. Build away. Let's see what'cha got." I'll bet that he doesn't know a resistor from a capacitor, a transformer from a transvestite. He'd be as likely to try to use solid copper wire, as he would to know to use stranded, and I'd bet he gets the gauge(s) entirely wrong, too. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 09, 2016 01:40 AM (f3Uae) True on all counts, but you'd not find instructions to use solid core wire in any Heathkit manual, since, I think, ever? Solid core isn't awful, when used to build a 1930s type, chassis & tube, furniture type radio, like the family gathered around to listen to FDR's Fireside Speeches. No movement, no vibration, no more relative stress on the system than the household wiring, itself. But a tabletop radio is meant to be moved, and movement calls for stranded. And of course, damn near 100% of all early mobile wireless was stranded, likely all the way back to the Titanic. Much less the early radios offered as option on some of the very cars you've bought and restored. And yes, the I/O leads from most of the components are solid, but of a short enough length to not become a part of a movement harmonic, and they're also meant to be securely affixed to their underlying circuit boards, withal. So, the history of antique radios aside, my point stands as to Achmed' likely proving to be a complete fvckup at the bench, in front of a jury, well prepared by competent council. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 09, 2016 01:49 AM (v5iqM) Oh, agreed upon that. But Heathkit made many, many kits that didn't use circuit boards, and solid-core wire is just fine for point-to-point wiring between the solder lugs on tube sockets under the chassis of a radio. And solid-core wire lends itself better to being laid out in neat rectilinear patterns(making certain, of course, not to make close and parallel wires that might couple in a feedback loop). Achmed, if he were very, very careful, and literate (and that we do not know) might be able to put a Heathkit together. They, were, after all, designed to be assembled by hobbyists, with no formal electronic training. But I will bet you, it's a lead-pipe cinch that if the project didn't work from the git-go, he wouldn't have a clue about how to trouble-shoot it. Still, it would be great fun to give him the challenge. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 09, 2016 01:58 AM (f3Uae) 528

.... ellipse .... Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 09, 2016 01:58 AM (f3Uae) We're arguing over knowledge that a competent builder should know, here. My assertion is that Achmed wouldn't even be in possession of enough know-how to properly twist and tin a stranded wire, in preparation for executing an acceptable solder joint, at all. And if he was faced with a solid wire anyway, I'd wager that he'd heat apply the tip of the iron to the wrong bit of the assembly, too. Oh, and "flux"? Whut'z flux?, he'd ask. etc. But you're right on the troubleshooting. Shall we give him a multimeter? How 'bout an oscilloscope? Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 09, 2016 02:07 AM (v5iqM) Heh. Actually, I think Heathkit supplied the wire. And, really, for most kits, excluding ones that run VHF, or very large currents, most any easily-soldered wire from about #12 to #22, would work fine, if the assembly technique were adapted to accommodate it. But, yeah, cold-soldered joints, cooked components, and parts installed without respect to polarity, for sure. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 09, 2016 02:14 AM (f3Uae) 533
FWIW, when I am rehabilitating an old radio, I change out all the paper capacitors as a matter of course. If they are not presently leaky, they will become so.
Instead of sucking the old solder off the lug on the tube socket (which is quite fragile), I clip the lead off the old cap about a quarter-inch from the lug. Then I form a tight spiral in the lead of the new cap (which is usually a lot thinner), by winding it around the lead of the old cap. Trim the free end, and it forms a sleeve which will slide over the stub of the old lead. A touch of solder, and I get a nice sweated joint that is very inconspicuous, and doesn't do violence to the delicate tube sockets or other parts. I'll get some good photos of it's innards for you, and we'll figure out how I can send 'em along your way, later. Point is, it's a work of art, inside. I'm working up the specs on replacing the old "grain of rice" indicator bulbs w/ LED's as well as the meter illumination. Not as easy as it looks at first glance, by the way. And, I'm taking the semi-rusted cabinet shell halves down to bare metal, for a good repaint. Might not duplicate the original, given the wide array of available paints on today's market. Oh, and I'll ditch the age-hardened plastic handle straps, and make up their twins in actual, hand stitched leather. You'll enjoy seeing this one, as it is now, to when it is finished. And yes, there is more to the story, but that's for another time. Hasta la nite nite, Horde! Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 09, 2016 02:22 AM (v5iqM) 535

The Daily Mail has a photo montage (well, they all are, I guess) of the abandoned Olympic stadiums and construction from all over the world over the decades.
They build all this spectacular shit at great cost (but great profit for the IOC cronies and all that), then abandon them to rust and rot after the show is after. In Sarajevo, there is now a graveyard on the grounds of some of the facilities. Headstones standing with a stadium and housing complexes in the background. I've never been diagnosed, so I don't know if there is a medical issue. What I do know is that I have an internal conversation tape running that is always grinding me down. Berating myself is the thing I do best because I've had a lot of practice. As a result, despair was my constant companion. A book that really helped me is Crash the Chatterbox. Reading it, I became more aware of what I was doing to myself and I stop the negative thoughts when I realize they are starting again. Stopping the negative self-accusations is an attitude changer. Life immediately gets more pleasant. It is foolish to say One Size Fits All when humans are so complicated, but the book might be worthy of your consideration. Epobirs, this is my third attempt at a reply to you. Pixy keeps kicking me out because I'm trying to copy part of that article by Stockman.
Interesting link but as he so often does, Stockman throws out a lot of numbers without giving you any idea where he got them. Sound familiar? He claims "Upwards of 95% of what passes for infrastructure is is privately owned." Says who? Dot that even seem logical to you? Strictly anecdotally and in total opposition to Stockman's contentions, from what I've seen our interestates are the worse roads in the country but it's really difficult to tell for sure, since half of them are under construction. I would guess Stockman is drawing upon the claims of those seeking infrastructure investment, as mentioned elsewhere in the article. Those covered bridges, for example, are frequently not the responsibility of any government entity.
There were a lot of these shenanigans during the big stimulus push in 2008. Most of the claimed successes were already scheduled and funded projects while many of the claimed new projects somehow never got to fruition as it turned out they were many years away from completing red tape aspects like the EIR. Yet somehow the money got spent anyway, largely lining the pockets of unions. Posted by: Epobirs at August 09, 2016 05:30 AM (IdCqF) 574

Most all of the maintenance of federal highways is born by the States through which they run. And how are they financed? A combination of gas tax, general funds, and tolls. Interstate highways originally built using federal money could not be toll roads initially. But congress changed that law a few years ago and States have rapidly tacked tolls on. I-95 is now a toll road almost completely all the way from ME to FL. ONly SC and NC is now toll free and both States have received "permission" from the feds to make them their section toll to.

Some bridges do need repair. the I-80 bridge in Davenport had to have some expansion joints replaced in the last year.
But there is no arguing that appropriated money is just an opportunity for graft and misuse. It is crazy that road funds can be used to build a community center near an interstate as a Study. As though any changes in policy are going to be made as a result of that Study. It is no wonder the government keeps expanding, and the perpetrators keep getting re-elected. Posted by: Acme at August 09, 2016 05:43 AM (Efb+O) 579
I wouldn't mind paying tolls if they'd cancel the gas tax. As it is, this is just double taxation. The gas tax was supposed to pay for the roads. But as with all things, government can't seem to live within its budget so it keeps dipping into the taxpayers' pockets.

Community Centers are not the only scam that gas tax money is being used for. 20% is removed directly from federal gas tax money as a direct subsidy to mass transit in Democrat controlled urban hells. And since all money is fungible it takes funding for mass transit from the city budget and replaces it with gas tax money so you can get more socialist spending.
And most States don't even make any pretense that tolls go to funding for road maintenance. Tolls go directly to the coffers for "general funding". And when highway maintenance gets behind they always scream for increased gas taxes and tolls. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at August 09, 2016 05:50 AM (mpXpK) 582

On this day one year ago the big story was that another "misunderstood black yoot" was shot and killed by an out of control white cop in Arlington, TX and Obama sent the corrupt DOJ there to stir up shit. What you haven't heard is what happened with all that. The perp who was shot had rammed his car through the window of a car dealership and was behaving erratically. The cop was fired to appease the mob and charged in the shooting. However, when the case went to the grand jury they returned a no bill verdict. It seems the poor yoot was high on drugs including a powerful hallucinogen. But the cop remains fired.

Normal 0 Continuing the superhighway discussion; my other major bitch about our superhighway system is how the route is chosen for new highways. Good old Senator Lindsay Graham signed onto the Interstate 73 scam for SC. This highway runs from Detroit down to Charlotte and had intended on running to the connect to I-95 near Wilmington, NC. But somehow the route got changed to follow the NC-SC border just on the SC side so SC could pay for most of the NC route. It bypasses all cities of any size in SC and only benefits residents of Charlotte who want to go to the beach. But we get to pay for it.
